Call of the Forsaken Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This group mission begins with Templar Gemma (click for map) in the Dead Hills. She is a gnome found in a tent in the dock camp, just west of the West Karana portal stone.

Pre-Requisites for requesting:
- Level 95
- Completed "For the Sake of the Forsaken" (Dead Hills partisan)

You say, 'Hail, Templar Gemma'

Templar Gemma peers up at you with weary eyes and sighs, 'It's good to finally see someone who's not injured or otherwise maimed. I could use a break.' The exhausted healer wipes blood from her hands while nodding towards the unconscious gnome to her right, 'Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth trying to save them. I mean, what kind of life could he possibly lead after what the [xulous] have done to him?'

You say, 'What did the Xulous do?'

Templar Gemma says 'I take it you haven't spent much time in the northwest? It's probably best. The xulous are the horrific offspring of Bertoxxulous and butchers, at best. They're determined to bring their behemoths back to life at any cost. Although they're often at war with the ogres to the east, they've taken to kidnapping smaller races and using them for experiments. Maybe they think because we're small we're easy targets? Truth is, we're a resourceful bunch, which is why so many of us have escaped, but not without [injury].'

You say, 'Injury?'

Templar Gemma says 'Even if you manage to escape physically unscathed like myself, the nightmares will surely haunt you for a lifetime.' The gnomish healer pauses with noticeable regret, 'Sometimes I feel guilty for escaping. It doesn't feel right being free when so many [others] are still being tortured. I guess that's why I remain here, hoping that healing the injured will somehow nullify my guilt. It hasn't worked yet.''

You say, 'What others?'

Templar Gemma pauses while she tries to recall the details of her captivity, 'I wasn't in any shape to count my fellow prisoners. If I were to judge by the number of screams I heard, I'd say nearly a dozen were in need of [rescue].'

You say, 'We'll rescue them'

Templar Gemma blinks with disbelief, 'Would you really put your life on the line for a bunch of strangers? The xulous are not to be underestimated. They fight hard and they fight dirty. You won't be able to break their camp alone. Perhaps if you had a [raid] force or maybe a well-trained [group], you'd be able to reach the encampment where they keep the prisoners.

You say, 'I have a group'

Templar Gemma looks up at you in awe, 'Wow. You're really going to do it, aren't you? The least I can do is [lead] you safely to the outskirts of their camp when you're ready. Once you're there though, you're on your own. I'll remain close by to heal the injured, but I'll never step foot in the xulous camp again.'

You have been assigned the task 'Xulous Prime'.

Templar Gemma has led you to the Xulous camp so you can free the gnomes from captivity.

You say, 'Lead me there'

Templar Gemma urges you to follow.

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered The Dead Hills.

Locate where the gnomes are being held captive 0/1 (Dead Hills)

This is a location update just ahead of the zone-in. Note that the task locks once this step updates.

Free the gnomes that are still alive from their captors 0/4 (Dead Hills)

Kill the xulous mobs around the injured gnomes in order to free them. Once all four are freed, Xulous Prime spawns. He spawns in the northeastern part of the camp, so you'll want to be clear of that area upon the last mob's death unless you're ready to engage at that moment.

Xulous Prime appears within the camp to defend his territory.

Defeat Xulous Prime 0/1 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: Kill the xulous leader before he kills you!

Xulous Prime hits for a max ~16,250 and has approximately 20 million hitpoints. He has an AE DD+knockback ("Toxic Blast") and a single-target random DOT ("Festering Pustules"). If this DOT isn't cured, an add ("A Rotting Corpse") spawns.

Toxic Blast: PB AE 60', Disease (-1000)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 46845
2: Knockback (8) and Toss Up (2)

Festering Pustules: Single Target, Unresistable (-1000)
1: Decrease HP when cast by 14400
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 23940 per tick
3: Trigger Effect: Living Dead on Fade
4: Increase Disease Counter by 90

Rotting Corpses cast "Decaying Flesh" as well as the same "Festering Pustules" as above:

Decaying Flesh: Single Target, Unresistable (-1000)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 14850 per tick
2: Decrease Mana by 4050 per tick
3: Decrease Endurance by 2400 per tick

At 80% and 40% health, a disease cloud aura spawns and follows around a random target (the aura moves very slowly). If caught in the aura, you are inflicted with "Breath of Xulous Prime":

Breath of Xulous Prime: Single Target, Unresistable (-1000)
1: Decrease Spell Haste by 30%
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 26040 per tick (1 tick)
3: Decrease Movement by 50%

Note: These auras do NOT respawn upon repeat attempts (if you wipe out and let the event reset).

Xulous Prime has been slain by _____!
A cloud of dust and filth fills the air as Xulous Prime's lifeless body crashes to the ground.

Claim your reward from the filthy chest 0/1 (Dead Hills)

Dodging Disease broken

It seems that as of Oct 2021 if mercs and / or pets are hit with Breath of Xulous Prime you will not get the Dodging Disease achievement.

This seems quite unreasonable if it's pets as that rules out pet classes unless you can find a group who're willing to get you the achievement for free.

Is anyone able to confirm if pets or mercs (or both) are the issue here please?

I CAN confirm...I went in at level 115 solo. Got him down to 20% health. Both Disease Aura's had spawned. I let myself die. I ran back and he was up, fully healed. I took him down again. Disease Clouds never respawned. I was able to get the achievement that way. It cost me a death.

Should that be BREATH of Xulous Prime?

I was able to camp out after the two disease auras spawned to clear them. Logged back in, finished the fight and got the Dodging Disease achieve.

Interesting. 6-boxing this, I decided for first try to engage Xulous and just burn him down---the power-over-tactics approach. Popped Silent Casting and set the wiz, mage and enchanter on BURN. Cleric and druid kept the group healed and cured the disease dots. He dropped pretty quick and I guess his dots never landed since I never saw any rotting corpse adds. If the auras showed up, again didn't notice and two healers chain-casting aoe heals/cures was more than enough to keep every group toon healthy.

Xulous dies. So I move the group to the zone-in area and send one toon to go loot the chest. Even if you don't care about the chest contents this is the final step to get credit for the mission. Four rotting corpses are standing stacked together within agro range of the chest. Like a moron I decide to open it, quick-rush to loot and then evac out. The rotting corpses don't see thru IVU but, of course, it drops when you /open and sure enough they aggro'd onto me instantly. Ran around a bit (they summon) and then evac'd. But they followed to the zone-in. I guess once aggro'd they maintain zone-wide agro. Got three toons out by /saying "leave" to the Templar.

Try try again. Zoned back in, dragged and rezzed corpse. Rotting corpses back waiting near the chest. This time I sent two toons to open the chest, both with IVU. Druid tagged the mobs, popped invulnerability (Totem of the Wurines) and the warrior looted the chest. I guess once the puller went invul, the rotting corpses went back to protecting the chest and aggro'd onto the warrior. He died but after looting and all the toons got credit for the mission. Exit zone with relief!

I think we lucked out to some extent. The rotting corpses are immune to mez and they hit fast, not to mention casting their own nasty spells. Any of them spawning and adding to the Xulous fight would have been bad news. The key was to BURN him down fast AND keep chain-casting group cures/heals. I guess if the rotting corpses don't spawn during the Xulous fight they spawn afterwards to guard the chest.

"Power over Tactics" works.... sometimes! Smiley: sly

1st invite all before you move as mission locks before u kill anything

2nd there are 2 groups of adds 1) spawns for failing to cure a disease based dot 2) the second (a cloud) spawns always but if u fail and retry or just gate out and come back does not re-spawn. Both adds have awful dots that will make healing very very hard the adds cast it the cloud hits by proximity.

Ensure entire group is in range and Chain Cast Group cure decease, Move entire group when clouds come or gate out and return. Since posting this i tried gating out (and not wiping ) and the clouds re-spawned so may be u need a wipe to get them not to re-spawn ?

Group make up 1) chain caster or group cure disease (clr word of reformation is ok - druids and shaman probably better)
2 clr mers 1 one tank (mage earth pet preferred but not necessary with 3 healers in group. with three heal types its slow but easy ubba dps not required (I boxed it with ranger mage and clr ) the clouds make 3 boxing it hard without them it is easy

Even with Cures this Mob is ridiculous if you are not raid geared. AT moment completely out of balance with normal group gear. We never saw a the dot which should spawn the adds. Only had one tank, all others out of reach spamming heals, nukes and dots. If we manage to get no add then the ridiculous amount of dps or the utopic hitpoints made the healers OOM. Have normally no problems with multiple trash mobs or with named in the Heroes Adventures but this mob is reason to give up the expansion at moment.

2nd note:
After many wipes we got a Mage into the group:

Setup:
100->80: Mage 100, Mage Pet tanking, Merc healer -> for Xulous Prime
80-40: Dru/War/Bst/Enc on hold (far enough to catch adds if Druid cannot heal/cure, Mage spammed heal/cures on pet too, Mage optionally banishes summoned creatures)
40/39: Exodus after the first Cloud Message starts
-> medding up and engaging again (Cloud is gone, no adds anymore, Xulous Prime was about at 72% again
39-0: all Pets in, all others Bow/Nuke him down

with this method cloud and adds are avoided and it goes very fast.

But as soon as a melee engages or has to offtank then the merc healer cannot keep up in healing both sufficiently.

So with Mage in group its a cake. Without it is crazy difficult.

I 3 box this all the time with a bst/druid/mage team (2 healers one nuker for merc)

I just set it up slow and steady when I get to 20% I pop my cool-downs and smoke his *** in 5 sec and done. I think key that makes this esy is I just group curing with the druid and it was basically tank and spank.

Just doing a rough estimate here, we qualified for this about 10 days into the expansion and have run it about twice a day since. We just got our third caster weapon for a drop rate of almost 10%. Obviously that is insufficient data to be sure and we got our first two in the first 20 runs. Took another 20 to get the last (doesn't it always seem that way?). Anybody want the 30 shoulderpads we let rot???

This is also the longest zone mission we've tried for the new expansion

Doomscale Horde (EWK mission), about 12 minutes*
Houses of Thex (Neriak Mission), about 10 minutes.
Saving Jacyll (Bixie Mission, haven't tried this one yet), unknown.
Xulous Prime (Dead Hills), about 25 minutes, probably closer to 20 if you can drop the boss in 1 pass.

*We sometimes have to re-run this as the Commander dies which extends the average time (accounted for above).

Boss spawned (for us) very near the deepest gnome and was perma-rooted. Suspect he always spawns there (but not sure). Might pull the last bunch away. May not help but we advanced steadily with the kills and he spawned smack dab on top of us.

1. Stay back a bit to avoid knockback.
2. Stay atop the cures, cleric group heals will work (max 3 casts) but may push you into mana problems.
3. If you can't avoid the cloud, drop the fight (we gated) and let it reset.

#1. Doesn't take much range, his AE knockback is only 60'
#2. My box cleric cast Word of Reformation and we ran 2 merc clerics. You have 20 secs to get the job done. Sometimes the mercs had it cleared before WoR landed.
#3. Clouds: Easy to avoid if you run one live box. Hard if you have multiples. We tried tricky stuff like dragging the cloud off, it pops back. Dropping agro by CoH'ing the cloud's target. Didn't matter, cloud picked somebody. Avoiding the cloud and keeping the DoT off was insurmountable for us. We ended up letting the cloud spawn and leaving the fight (keeping the instance live) then coming back after he reset and the cloud despawned.

Boss HPs: Did not parse it but, just guessing, around 20M, doesn't hit hard, but his DoT was cast about every 30 seconds.

Mana: It was a mana-pres fight for our cleric (using group heals). Voice macros to tell who got it would help make single point cures possible and save mana.
