/loc of Joyce?

You say, 'Hail, Joyce'

Joyce says 'I am Joyce of the Temple of Solusek Ro. I am the guardian of four of the items of the elementalist. If you are a magician, ask me about the [Robe of the Elements], the [clay bracelet], the [earthen boots] or the [Circlet of Mist].'

You say, 'What are earthen boots?'

Joyce says 'Earthen boots are a fine adornment for the feet of any magician. They have a wonderful brown color, and are known to enhance the stamina of any magician who wears them. As an added bonus, animals tend not to notice those who wear earthen boots. Are you [interested] in the [boots]?'

You say, 'I am interested in the boots.'

Joyce says 'I will cobble you a pair of earthen boots, but you will need to bring me the proper components. I need a stone marker from a glyphed guard in Castle Mistmoore, a heart of stone from the stone skeleton near Lake Rathe, soiled boots from a froglok tonta knight in the caverns of Guk and a cat's eye agate. Bring me these four items, and I will cobble you a pair of earthen boots.'

Hand in the items.

Joyce says 'Solusek Ro does not believe in half measures.'
Joyce says 'Solusek Ro does not believe in half measures.'
Joyce says 'Solusek Ro does not believe in half measures.'
Joyce says 'Marker, heart, boots and gem. All four items that I need to cobble earthen boots for you. Well done! Take these boots, and may they serve you well!'
Your faction standing with Temple Of Sol Ro got better.
Your faction standing with Shadowed Men got worse.
You gain party experience!!

Just completed this since I'd looted a couple of the items on another character. My magician bought the cat's eye from the PoK small bank jeweller and my higher level druid who had the 3 non-trade items ported both toons to Lavastorm. The magician was already Amiable to the Temple faction from earlier questing, asked Joyce about the boots. Note: she won't respond to just the [interested] or [boots] keywords, but it didn't affect the MQ turn ins (you need to say 'I am interested in the boots' to get the response as listed).

Turned in Stone Marker first (since it was easiest to get so thought I'd risk that), then Heart of Stone but she handed it back, tried the Soiled Boots which worked, followed by the HoS again, finally my magician handed in the Cat's Eye and voila, a nice pair of charm breaking boots she's almost ready to use :).

Nice little diversion to old zones, took about 2 hours all told, mostly waiting on the boots as per Docalla's excellent write-up, although in fairness I was on a killing spree in Mistmoore trying to repair my RoS faction so not sure how long that took to get the marker to drop.
Guide

So I decided to do this quest for my 67 mage today. Why? Not sure; I like clicky toys, and it was fun to see old content again for a night. I thought I'd post a mini quest guide instead of more pointless discussion about whether they suck or not.

Stone Marker: Went to graveyard in Mistmoore (check EQAtlas map), they dropped off the second glyphed guard I killed. Looks like a wiz rune.

Heart of Stone: There's a tower with two stone skeletons located at about 0, neg 1250 in Lake Rathe. That's the little niche on the southeast part of the zone. They're mages with earth pets, and on about a 6 minute respawn. The 7th one I killed had the Heart; it looks like a Ruby. Three rods for the Wiz Staff quest dropped in those 7.

Soiled Boots: Longest part; if you go to www.eqatlas.com and look at the Upper Guk map, the tonta knight is in room 12 with the Idealist. You can't tell from the map, but you run up a winding staircase and end up in a room with 3 spawns. One of the spawns is the tonta knight's with the PH being a ton knight. He's on about a 20 minute spawn it seems, and I had 4 PHs before the tonta knight spawned. When it did, he had the boots and nothing else.

Bought a Cat's Eye Agate from Dashelo Dalroshan in Bazaar, he's in the main circular room when you come in the zone.

Turn all four in to Joyce in Temple of Sol Ro (she's on the balcony next to Lord Lyfyx) and presto. Whole quest took about two and a half hours, the great majority of it waiting for the tonta knight, though I had a druid bot port me around so may take slightly longer if you're using PoK stones. No mobs that I killed either for the quest or in getting to them took longer than 5 seconds for my CoW to kill, so I can't really tell you how hard they are if you're lower level. I do know that the tonta knight hits for 50 max; I sat on his spawn point and that's what he hit me for while sitting (mobs always hit you for max dmg if they hit you while you're sitting).
This is not a worthless quest

I'd just like to point out that these are even better now then they were before. As a high end Mage both the Clay bracelet (insta cast Eye of Zomm) and the Earthen boots are great for many reason.

These boots are incredibly great when you are using the lv65 Call of the Archmage (charm vs summoned). The insta cast invis will break charm for you so if you need to get a snare on the mob or other debuffs. It's also good for killing your pet if he's out of range of commands, but I have rarely had to usem for this reason.

The Clay bracelet on the other hand has so many uses to it I cannot list them all. If you don't believe me just go get the clicky and experiment, they quest isnt that hard at all, It can be used for scouting or Mage track(tm) as I call it =), and because the eye no longer counts as a pet you can use both the eye combo'd with Pet hold to have your pet PULL for you. Makes for some nice extra medding time while your pet pulls for you.
Earthen Boots and Pet Death

These boots are cool for two reasons...

1. If your pet wanders off you can insta-kill it.

2. Anything that your pet was fighting, does not come looking for you as it also wipes the aggro list for the mobs it was fighting.

These boots will be the only reason that you will be able to use a pet on any high level raid where pets are usually forbidden.
The GUK issue
# Feb 09 2003 at 8:01 AM Rating: Decent
With the zone shuffle and the fact that the Frogs are good guys etc, is the quest still able to be done? I really don't want to stuff up my faction with the froggies any more than I have. Is the guy still in the same place?

Frogloks in Gukta are on a different faction than the Guk frogs...as of now.

When Legoacy of Yourcasha finally comes out, I would imagine the factions will change and possibly link.

Best to do this quick before Feb 24.

Thankfully (well, kind of) it turns out that Gukta Froglok faction is unrelated to Guk faction. This is good in that all you good races/classes who have mercilessly slaughtered your way through Guk don't have to worry about lowering your Gukta faction.
On the negative side, the flip side means that all of you evil people who have not killed any Guk Frogloks will still be KoS. The reason for this is that SOE has gotten lazy and not bothered to give Gukta Frogloks a faction at all. I know this because my main is a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and I have been forced to kill one of the wandering guards in self-defense on my way to Guk. No faction hit at all. Start out KoS, stay KoS. Doesn't seem very fair to me that they have just assumed nobody wants to build factions, but hey - that's just me, right? I'm a customer, what do I know?

So there you go. Kill as many Frogloks as you like (Guk, Gukta, whatever your preference) because you can still wander into the town unchallenged. Never taken my SK into the town yet, so that may be another matter... ;)

Picked these up at 35. Now, they're not fantastic or anything, but it's a fairly easy quest for a pretty decent item.

If yer pet is in range you can reclaim energy it easy, scept the focus items need to be equipped to use the reclaim energy proc (not sure about other reclaim energy items, not in the habbit of collectin em. heh) so you have to switch out your inventory, target your pet with your character window still up, then right click and hope it's in range. OR ya can pick yerself up a pair of these babies, toss em in a bag (don't reccomend leavin em in yer inventory unless you know you're gonna be usin em soon) and pull em out when yer pet gets lost. They work from an inventory slot, don't require targeting, and have no casting time. That and they ARE an instant invis, even if it is just vs animal.

Just make darn sure you know which mobs are animals and which aren't. heh.

If you've lost a pet due to pathing or whatever and you don't feel like nuking it.. casters lvl 39 or higher can simply use the spell "Summon Companion" and it returns the pet to you.. of course if it's in a fight.. then the mob finds you as well.. =) The spell is found on an npc named Rushka (or something like that) on the commons side of the commons/nro tunnel.. the npc is in the same area as the shady swashbuckler..

Any spells bought from Rushka are EXPENSIVE. So bring lots of cash. I can't remember how much the 2 spells I bought from him were (Expedience and Summon Companion) was but they were way more than normal price for their level even with 150+ CHA (with my jewelry and opal steins equipped).

Anyway, back to the topic. Yes, this quest is pretty easy at the level you normally begin the Sol Ro quests.

These boots have +5 STA and +15hp. So all they give you is a few more hit points aside from the invisibility to animals. La de da. Granted the STA goes along with the "Earthen" theme along with the invisibility to animals. A few more hit points are useful but a mage needs to be more concerned about more INT ( = mana ) than hit points.

The invis is fairly useless IMO also. I remember going on this quest to get everything thinking that unlimited invis vs. animals would be so cool to have. Boy was I wrong. Unless you just don't want to be annoyed while medding in outdoor zones where the mobs are green, I haven't seen much use for the effect. I haven't used these boots in 11 levels. I may just be having a memory block, but with the exception of the cougar side of Iceclad, I can't think of a zone where you would be concerned about animals and not non-animals. If the zone is full of dangerous animals, you have your pet up right? And therefore can't have any sort of invis. A mage's life expectancy isn't very high without a pet even in a mildly dangerous zone. I never trust the duration of any invisibility spell too far, it always seems to leave at bad times. Besides, if you need to not be seen, normal invis is cheap on mana and covers animals too.

I still carry these boots around for some dumb reason though, just in case that effect ever comes in handy. I could care less about the minor hp adjust.

But in hindsight, I would have been better off just xp grinding and gathering money for real shoes that have a decent INT bonus like these Blood Weave Lined Shoes.

Haven't seen someone completely miss the point on an item like this for quite a while, lol. Ok these click an invis spell, which instantly kills your pet anywhere in zone. Uber... a couple years ago. Since the /pet get lost has been changed to work zone wide as well, so there really is no longer the need to invis to kill off a pet. I'd still pick up the item anyways, click toys are fun to have around anyways.
RE: don't always have to nuke lost pets
# Jan 09 2003 at 4:19 AM Rating: Decent
You are assuming, of course, that one has the Luclin expansion, and can simply find a pair of Blood Weave Lined Shoes, or buy them in the Bazaar.

Yes, I'm aware there are other boots with +INT, and that INT is more important than stamina for a mage. But on my server, at least, it's hard to buy nearly ANYTHING useful outside of the bazaar, as the North Freeport auctions pretty much dried up at once when Luclin was released, which makes these (a bit) useful to an untwinked mage who doesn't have access to the item-factory that is the Bazaar.

Just buying a pair of boots misses out on the fun of questing for these yourself, though. (Assumption: You enjoy an occasional break from pure XP grinding.) That said, even the newbie armor boots for High Elf mages are better than these solely in terms of their INT bonus. (The newbie boots also grant a plus to CHA, and are by no means as difficult to acquire!)

If your pet is aggroed on something you can't summon it to you.

To all, my suggestion, get the focus items. They all have a right click reclaim energy wich can be used anywhere. Press f1 to bring the pet target up and nuke em!

Because

if you just go invis to dismiss the pet and he has aggo'd mobs, they come looking for YOU after he dies. You wanna take the chance, go invis then.
a must
# Jun 27 2001 at 12:01 AM Rating: Decent
no mages should hunt without them, whenever your pet get lost on bad pathing or whatever, it s the only way to instant kill it, pet get lost will only work if he hears u, the boots is instant kill in whole zone..
no need to wear them just have them near for emergency use.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 17 2001 at 10:11 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I had a level 30 druid, i spent a week of my life getting these boots, then i found out that they were nodrop... Confused and in disbelief, i finished the quest anyways, and I DIDNT GET SQUAT! I gave all my items to him, and i didnt get anything!

Why would a Druid get these boots? They are mag only! Dont druids get enough enjoyment out of killing Quillmane and stealing the cloak we need for our epic?...What so now you want to be able to complete our quests and get rich off of it?
I love this game but I swear I will never play as the "super cool" dr00ds. Every time I see one even though all of them arent bad I wonder if the person picked it because he/she liked what the class represented or just heard that they were uBer and they would lvl quickly.

Or maybe it was less that druids are uber and more that said munchkin couldn't pass up a class with ports and sow...

Why 'suffer' without the ability to make 200pp a day zoning? :)

breaking charm. Often when a charmed pet is low on Hp, maybe evn so low they will walk away... you can break charm, sometimes causing it to simply walk away. I am not 100% sure, but I would also be surprised if the animal could see you? I used hide as a halfling, but this would be better. Not to mention, often you hunt in zones with a lot of animals. Stonebrunt comes to mind. I think i read once its instant click? If it was/is you can sometimes pull a single mob that way. Like the inate Camo. If all were animals.... again druids deal a lot with animals, they do get a pet eventually AND to break charm..... and you save a spell slot, and so on...

too bad a druid cant use them....

Drop off the froglok tonta knight in upper guk...realy easy to get if you've never killed a froglok before in your characters EQ life since the frogs wont aggro you then...the tonta knight is blue to me at lv 32 but an easy kill ...pretty easy to get to as well
lucky
# Feb 27 2001 at 4:08 PM Rating: Decent
It's not that easy since the Tonta Knight has a ph, a Ton Knight, and there is usually a shaman and one or two other frogs in the room. But they have a small aggro range so if you aren't kos then you can actually kill the tonta without problems.
Well one problem is to make him stand still but that's why we have Earth pets.
IMO the frog is the easiest though of the three mobs that you have to kill for these fine boots.
Instant Free Pet Killer
# Oct 09 2000 at 2:07 AM Rating: Default

While usually you don't want to kill off your pet, these boots are quite handy for doing just that. Sometimes in dungeons when your pet goes away it's a good idea to just kill it so it doesn't bring a train. These boots make that quick and easy because you just click on them and pet goes poof.

Because your pet has to be in range to respond to this (or other) command.
That goes for all pet commands but if you go invis vs animals then your pet will suicide whereever it is. And then anything it was fighting will come looking for you...

Earthen Boots
# Sep 18 2000 at 3:07 AM Rating: Good
Being on eof the few signature items for mages in the game that aren't essential to survival, the Earthen Boots quest is good and the item is acceptable. It's nice to see Verant giving items to mages that add some to stamina (something the Guide says you should focus on, but that's another story).

A few guildmates and I camped the Stone Skeletons in Rathe for about 30 minutes before getting the spawn. The stone marker I just stumbled upon while fighting familiars there (level 24 or so). The Tonta Knight was a tad harder, as I had to fight my way through those that spawn around him. Bring friends into guk; you won't be able to solo it at 25th (probably not easy at 30th, either).
