Vira may be found at +410, +85.

You say, 'Hail, Vira'

Vira says 'I am Vira, elementalist of Solusek Ro. I guard the secrets of the tools of [elemental summoning]. If you are a magician, you might be interested.'

You say, 'What is elemental summoning?'

Vira says 'I hold the secrets to the construction of four tools which assist magicians with the summoning of elementals. I know about the [broom of Trilon], the [shovel of Ponz], the [torch of Alna] and the [stein of Ulissa].'

You say, 'What of the stein of Ulissa?'

Vira says 'The stein of Ulissa was found and used by the mistress of water of the same name. Are you [interested] in the [stein]?'

You say, 'I am interested in the stein.'

Vira says 'I will devise a replica of the stein of Ulissa for you, but I will need the following items to make it: a sapphire, a scale from a mermaid, a stein from a magician in Najena and the toes of an ice giant. Bring me these four components, and I will make for you an object of elemental power.'

A Sapphire may be purchased from a jewelry merchant. A Mermaid Scale drops from various mermaids around the world. A Stein (identifies as "Stein of Water") drops from various mobs in Najena. Ice Giant Toes drop from various ice giants around the world. Hand in the four items.

Vira says 'The four components required for the stein of Ulissa?! I am impressed! As you have displayed valor, I grant you this stein.'

What went wrong ?

Ok hopped on my mage today after buying the itmes need for the stein. AFter giving the stein, scale, sapphire and toes. She gave me the sapphire and toes back saying we dont do thigs half measure. What happened ?
RE: What went wrong ?
# Dec 13 2003 at 3:28 AM Rating: Decent
Same thing happened to me twice, and both times she gave me back the sapphire. I figured out what went wrong.

There are two types of sapphires in the game, the icons even look different. On inspection one is a lore item, the other is used in tradeskills. For this quest you need the plain sapphire that is used in tradeskills.

Also she will only accept Ice Giant Toes. Frost Giant Toes are not the same.
Toes for everyone!!

If you are after Ice, Fire, Hill, and Cyclops toes...Go to Ocean of Tears and kill the named giant Gronit. He drops all of them. Says he is lvl 33-37 but a definite under con (was LB to a lvl 53 druid). I have read that he is camped alot but has a spawn rate of just under a minute. His location is on the same island as the Seafury Cyclops' near the pirate camps. Hope this helps!!

I know the items add a level or so do the pets, but as a Solo'ing mage, I want to know plain and simple, how much do these improve your pets? My level 29 Necromancer can EAT things that my 32 Mage cannot even engage, or at least has to chain cast pets all day or run and nuke to finish off. I know the game has some balance issues, but really.

What to do:
Talk to Vira (Gnome p415,p90) in Temple of Solusek Ro. She will give info on 4 items she needs for the each quest you are doing for each of the 4 Mage pet focus items.

Hints:
None of the items are no-drop, so the best thing to do is hit the vendors in the surrounding areas first or auction in the zone. Go to OOT and check vendors for toes, if none there try Everfrost, and then try Nejena (go to the floor where you get the 3rd key and kill those mages) then buy needed gem and go to back to Vira.

The main items broom, torch, stien & shovel drop from mobs called 'An Alligator' the Swamp Alligators do not drop them to my knowledge.
------------------------------------------------
Shovel of Ponz (increases size and power of Earth Elementals above level 34) requires:

A Shovel-from a Magician (9-24) in Najena or "An Alligator" (18-34) in Cazic Thule or Feerrott.
Eye of Gargoyle-Mistmoore (level 22-36) or Gargoyles in OOT (level 18-20).
Toes of a Hill Giant--from EK, NK, or WK, Rathe Mountains, WC (level 33-37), or Gornit in OOT.
A Ruby-from vendors.
------------------------------------------------
Torch of Alna (increases size and power of Fire Elementals above level 34) requires:

Fire Drake Scale-Fire drake (level 9-11) in Lavastorm Mountains.
Fire Giant Toes-Fire Giants are in SolB (level 47-51) or Gornit in OOT.
Torch-Magicians (level 9-24) in Najena and Alligators (level 18-34) in Feerrott.
Fire Emerald-from vendor.
------------------------------------------------
Broom of Trilon (increases size and power of a summoned Air Elementals above level 34) requires:

Griffen Feather-most any griffens near Karanas or vendors in Rathe, NK, and probably Jaggedpine.
Cyclops Toes-SeaFuries in OOT (level 39-42) and Cyclops in SK, RM, WK (level 28 - 42) or Gornit in OOT.
Broom-Magicians (level 9-24) in Najena and Alligators (level 18-34) in Feerrott.
Star Ruby-from vendor.
------------------------------------------------
Stien of Ulissa (increases size and power of a summoned Water Elementals above level 34) requires:

Mermaid scale-Sirens on the spires in OOT (Sirens at the spires the Boat passes when you go from FP to BB are excelent solo exp for level 16 - 20).
Ice Giant Toes-Ice Giants in Everfrost Peaks or from Gornit.
Stien-Magicians in Najena and Alligators in Feerrott, Magicians (level 9 -24) and Alligators (level 18-34).
Sapphire-from vendor.

Has anyone tried the scales off the mermaids from Kedge Keep? Just curious if those would also work.

Yes, the mermaid scales from Kedge Keep work just fine. Got the stein for my level 12 mage on Cazic Thule tonight from a scale that dropped in Kedge on a raid the night before. Sometimes you will find mermaid scales on the merchants near the Freeport docks, they work too. If you need Ice Giant toes, go to Everfrost, invis yourself if under 28th level, head to the IG camp at the entrance of Permafrost, and just politely ask one of the people there if you can have an Ice Giant toe for your focus item quest. The IG's are almost always camped, and a lot of times the people camping them just leave the toes or burn them to save room. If you're polite, and say "please" like an adult, instead of "pls" or "plz" like a little brat, most people are happy to help. Oh, and as long as I'm off-topic on manners, it is also polite to say "Thank you" when somebody does you a favor. (Never group with anyone who says "plz.") :oP

I don't know where you got your information about Gornit...but I'm afraid you're very mistaken. Killing Gornit could not possibly lower your Fironia Vie fac, because it is an opposing faction. So, by killing Gornit, you're actually raising faction with FV. If you go to Illia's Bestiary, and look Gornit up, you'll see this...and when you grow up enough to actually try to kill him, if you succeed, you'll see I'm right. The only fac that is lowered is the Gunthak Pirates fac.

#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 06 2002 at 6:19 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The mob that drops them is An Alligator. They are outside now and THEY DO drop the stuff for the focus items and also the no drop ring. They are pretty rare though, as I have killed 15 crocs and only got 1 torch and 3 useless rings. Useles because the Elemental Binder is a better headpiece than the one you need the ring for. The Swamp Alligators do not drop them. Those are lowbie gators. So I don't want to see any crying newbs here saying that you have to go inside the new level 60 CT dungeon for ANY quest items. All have been moved outside. Capiche?

Quest mobs were moved outside. Why would they make it so a 34 mage has to go in that death trap? Please don't spread rumors unless you go there and look and see no gators outside.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 17 2002 at 9:56 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well, the sad news, is that you used be able to get the items for the quest at either CT or Najena. Now CT has become a high level dungeon (50 plus). So, the only place to still farm them is Najena and you are now forced to sit there and camp and camp till you get it. This is unless you have a clan of level 50 plus friends that wont mind getting it for you. Anyhow, you can still get them from Najena.

All you need to do is go into OOT get off at the first place (on the way to fayder) then buy some toes if none there swim to the closest east island and buy one in that tower and if there is none there try Everfrost then kill The other things on the way back from fayder (last thing you see when your about to zone to Efp (2 big rocks surrounding you) then go to Nej and go to the floor where you get the 3rd key (bloodstained) and kill those mages i got 2 in 30 min then buy stone and go to the person that gives out quest

anyone have an estimate on how much the ice giant toes cost at vender with average cha (60-80), probably end up trading for em, but it'd be good info for the forum.
RE: giant toes?

I saw them for 11pp at the gnome outpost in IC with about 107 cha, I'd say probly 13-14pp with low cha.

I don't care what anyone says, if you are camping in Najena for the stein this thing is RARE. Just to give you an example these are all the things that fell for my mage before the stein finally dropping:

- 1 Traveler's Pouch (4 Slot 20% Reduction Weight)
- 1 Traveler's Pack (8 Slot 20% Reduction Weight)
- 6 Blackened Sapphires (oh well, at least I have one for my monk now)
- 4 Brooms
- 3 Shovels
- 3 Torches
- 4 Words of Elemental Mastery: Earth
- 2 Words of Elemental Mastery: Water
- 1 Words of Elemental Mastery: Fire
- 3 Bands of Flesh
- 2 Black Flowing Robes

And a whole bunch of other stuff I can't even remember! This stein is supposed to be common yet after a collective 8 hours in this dungeon I FINALLY got one (notice I got a couple rare drops before I got the stein). Not that I'm complaining though ... I mean the above loot that fell was pretty nice and the gold alone paid for the time I had to spend in this dungeon. I suppose I could have tried the gators in CT, but I didn't want to bother being CT was full and Najena was empty (I love this place btw).

So, just so you know, maybe it was my bad luck (I'm almost sure that's it) but don't expect the stein to fall as commonly as the other focus components.

Also I should tell you that there were only 6 mages that dropped components (yet all of them drop words of mastery): There is the one at the entrance to Najena, then down the hall in the elemental room, and finally downstairs in the jail area. There are 3 in the first room were the uncommon spawn, Ekeros, spawns (monk red sash), and then there is one more that will share the spawn with Rathyl in the next room.

Keep in mind that Rathyl's Reincarnate will also drop components and words so it's worth killing the Ogre Captain to get the key for the first room at least (then you can just cast pull Rathyl/Mage into Ekeros room). The spawn time on everything here is extremely slow (which is actually why hunting here for exp is great if you time the spawns correctly) so be ready to wait.

I actually had time to make quick dinner, come back and eat half of it before mob would pop (about 19-20 minutes apart). Hope this bit of info helps, as I don't wish anyone the level of frustration I experienced trying to get my stein. Though I have to say it was fun, and now I know Najena like the back of my hand.

/agree I camped Najena for the Stein with my lvl 53 wiz. I found a nice rotation, I'd kill half the dungeon and med, then kill the other half and med, rince wash repeat.

After keeping every mob in Najena dead for 8+ hours the Stein finally dropped off of a Goblin Magician.

I found the items for this quest most ofen dropped in the jail part. Guard Moosh (whatever his name), the high elf, and the halfling down there were dropping shovels and brooms an awefull lot. The Dark Elf Magicians dropped the various words of mastery more than anything else.

Think you had a run of bad luck...compared to me getting broom on 2 succsive pops, stein, torch, and shovel...in that order over the course of about 2 hrs max. Didnt get any other rare drops but Wind Mastery.
RE: Getting the Stein in Najena
# Apr 23 2002 at 2:46 PM Rating: Decent
It is random really I went in one day and a mage was looking for about 8 hours for the stein. Then next day I was saw 4 drop. Took me forever to get the shovel. Just a matter of luck I would say.
Are the Temple quests working post Luclin?
# Dec 13 2001 at 11:23 PM Rating: Decent
I stopped in to visit a bit with Vira and complete my last focus item quest and found none of the NPCs in the temple are responding to a Hail. If it was a faction problem they at least will respond and tell you to leave them alone. (Had faction problems once before). Question I have is if anyone has been up to the Temple for quests after installing Lulin?

I just completed the robe of the elements quest yesterday. So yes, Sol temple is still working... make sure you don't hail the genie or you ruin your faction.

I just purchased the toes, gems, and the other random things I hunted for. The tough part for me was getting the torch broom stien and shovel. I still have yet to get the stien. The mages or gators were not very giving in the WHOLE week I camped them. Anyway I also turned them into Vira in no particular order and I raised faction by Turning in derv rings to some orc in South RO

So if anyone out there has a spare stien on MT find me.

The scale can be found quite easily in Ocean of Tears off of the Syrens(sp?) the stein u can get off of the Magician's in Najena (drops commonly) the gem I know for a fact sells in Qeynos in the gem shop in NQ and the Ice Giant Toes u can buy in Halas (usually).

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 16 2001 at 12:01 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The Stein of Maggok is the result of a quest that is VERY long. You have to travel all over the place from OOT to Qeynos. The final step for that quest is in Oggok tho, so unless you have great faction there or are an Enchanter, forget it. Go buy one. The Stein of Ulissa is for Magicians to make their pets bigger and stronger. Personally, I have both :)

How do I raise faction with Vira?
RE: Faction
# Jun 16 2001 at 12:06 AM Rating: Default
There are several quest, just look for the ones that raise your Solusek Ro faction. There is a merchant some where you can give 30gp to and he gives you back a random scroll and ToSR faction - and in MM there is a flower on top of the coffin in the Graveyard, take it and give it to the shadowman behind the crypt. He gives you a Necro only scepter and ToSR faction. There are other ways but that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

Last night camping traveller's pack in Rathyl's room and it's reincarnate dropped both Stein and Touch which is somewhat common, so i wonder if the quest detail's wrong, the shovel , stein , torch may be dropped by Rathyl's reincarnate, or, at least more commonly dropped than normal magicians do?

The Focus Items
# Apr 22 2001 at 10:40 PM Rating: Good
I have just finished doing all the focus Item quests. They are as follows:

Shovel of Ponz:

Gargoyle Eye - can be found in Mistmoore or in OOT. I bought mine from a vender on sister island.

Hill Giant Toes: Hill giants the world over drop these... Got mine from Gornit*

Shovel: Magicians in Najena and Alligators in Cazic drop these.

Ruby: Bought mine from the vender in High Keep - any ruby will do

Torch of Alna:

Fire Drake Scale - got mine off Fire drake in Lavastorm Mountains. Could probably buy them form the gypsies camped there.

Fire Giant Toes - Just get them from Gornit*

Torch - Magicians in Najena and Alligators in Cazic drop these.

Fire Emerald - bought mine a merchant in North Freeport. Any Fire Emerald will do.

Broom of Trilon:

Griffen Feather - most griffens drop them. Bought mine in the commonlands.

Cyclopse Toes - Got mine from Gornit*

Broom - Magicians in Najena and Alligators in Cazic drop them

Star Ruby - Bought mine in North Freeport. Any Star Ruby will do

Stien of Ulissa:

Mermaid scale - Killed sirens on the spires in OOT to get these. Can also buy them from Sister Island merchants.

Frost Giant Toes - Even though Vira says you need Frost giant toes you ACTUALLY need Ice Giant toes. Get them from Gornit*.

Stien - Megicians in Najena and Alligators in Cazic drop them.

Sapphire - Got mine in North Freeport in an auction... Any Sapphire will do.

When you goto the Temple of Solusek Ro you will need to talk to Vira, she is a short Gnome on the left side of the balcony in the main room. Hail her and follow the prompts till she tells you the four items she needs for the quest you are doing. Give her the four items all at once in the order she asks for them. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST INDIFFRENT TO HER. She will give you faction, Experience, and the item you were questing for. Good Luck !!!

* Gornit is a Giant on an island in OOT near Sister Island. Just go to sister island and do a shout asking if anyone is camping Gornit, if someone is, ask them if you can get one of each toe from them. Gornit is almost always camped and the people camping him will usually give you the toes for free.

# Jan 31 2001 at 5:59 AM Rating: Decent
getting most of the items but the broom is easy. getting the toes isn't. but i found where you might find all the toes needed for the focous item quest, its in the oot at the High elf that sells the lv 16-20 mage spells. Hope this helps.
RE: getting toes
# Feb 02 2001 at 8:29 PM Rating: Default
Just check vendors in Everfrost and Halas. Surely at least one, if not more, will have the toes in among their merchandise.

If you can't find them, then ask if any parties are hunting ice giants and bum/buy them off the party.
