Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This is a group mission that begins with Calvin Tresc in Chelsith Reborn (findable with CTRL+F). He is at the base of the giant tower (northwest side), at 1340, 885, 321 (map).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completion of "Prove Your Worth, Slave"
- Completion of "How Puzzling All These Changes Are"
- Completion of "Hold Nothing Back"
- Completion of "Ready the Killing Blow"

You say, 'Hail, Calvin Tresc'

Calvin Tresc says 'Ah _____, you've arrived, and not a moment too soon. Your name is on the forked tongue of every serpent in the city. Quite a grand place to be famous, or at least infamous, eh?' He surveys your expression and takes a more serious tone, 'Very well, I see you're as stoic as they say. The only way we're going to obtain victory here is to tear down the [veil] that blinds us from the truth.'

You say, 'What veil?'

Calvin Tresc says 'As you've seen in your struggles here, the city is not what it seems. Manifestations of mad dreams take form and live among us. It is time we [reveal] the city for what it truly is: the machinations of a backstabbing beast.'

You say, 'Let's reveal it'

Calvin Tresc says 'When you are [ready] I will open your eyes to the truth.'

You have been assigned the task 'Unveiling the Mystery'.

All of your heroic triumphs throughout the city have lead to this moment. Speak with Calvin Tresc and have him lead your charge into Vyzh`dra's seat of power.

Speak with Calvin Tresc in the unveiled city 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Speak with him and follow him.

You say, 'Hail, Calvin Tresc'

Calvin Tresc says 'Look now at the unveiled city and see it for the sick stage that it is. The self titled 'Godslayer' is losing control of the strings he pulls to make these puppets dance. It is 'this' moment that we [strike] at the heart of his empire and free ourselves of this nightmare. Of course if this is all too much for you to handle you can [escape] reality and return to the charade.'

You say, 'Let's strike'

Calvin Tresc says 'Vyzh`dra sits at the top of his [tower] waiting for our arrival. From what I can tell he's turned all of his attention to stopping our rebellion as he has forgone maintaining the charade of reality within the city. His puppets lie frozen and shattered in the streets. The only living creatures that seem to remain are his allies and ours.'

You say, 'What about his tower?'

Calvin Tresc says 'The entrance to the top of his tower is guarded by four empowered servants. You will have to defeat them so that I can break the seal on the portal. The information I've gathered suggests that each guardian is shielded against both a school of magic and melee combat. Should one of them fall in battle the shielding is imparted on each of the other guardians. Your best bet is to kill them all concurrently. Give the word when you are [ready] to fight.'

You say, 'Ready!'

Calvin Tresc charges as he shouts, 'Get rid of these guardians so that I may break the seal!'

Storm the Tower 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

When ready, just enter the tower.

The statuesque serpents spring to life and turn their attention toward you!

Eliminate the Portal Guards 0/4 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Four loyal guardians are sustaining a shield around the portal to the top of Vyzh`dra's tower. Eliminate them. Beware that each portal guardian has a resistance against a school of magic and type of melee weapon. When a guardian dies, its immunities are shared among its remaining allies.

Each of the guards has a strength against a weapon type and spell type. When a guard is killed, they pass their strengths to the remaining guards:

- Portal Tender Kozath: slashing damage + disease/poison spells
- Portal Tender Srezek: blunt damage + cold spells
- Portal Tender Vozesh: piercing damage + fire spells
- Portal Tender Zureshek: hand-to-hand damage + magic spells

The guards are permanently rooted and do not summon; however, if a guard is 10% health (or lower) than any other guard, they gain the ability to summon and begin casting a pull spell on their target.

As you kill them, you will see an emote:

As the portal tender falls its strengths are shared with the remaining guardians.

Upon the death of the last Portal Tender, you see:

Calvin Tresc shouts excitedly, 'Yes, that's it! Your sick game is over 'Godslayer'!' He looks over and beckons you toward the portal, 'Speak to me when you are ready and we shall confront the snake directly.'

Speak with Calvin Tresc again 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

You say, 'Hail, Calvin Tresc'

Calvin Tresc steps into the portal with a smug look on his face.

Calvin Tresc turns back, a look of dire concern on his face, 'Impossible, the tower portal is inactive! That must mean...' His words trail off as his voice is but a whisper to the bellow that interrupts him.

The serpentine voice of the dominion's master hisses loudly throughout every corner of the city, 'Do you really expect to essscape this place, Tresc?'

Calvin Tresc shouts, 'Go now and gather our allies together! No doubt the Godslayer's minions have set out to squash the rebellion.'

Gather allies out where the World Ends 0/3 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Reconvene with Belissa the Barker to the north out where the world ends. The shissar have moved to suppress any resistance members in that area.

You say, 'Hail, Belissa the Barker'

Belissa the Barker says 'Just in time savior! These conjurors have been sent by Vyzh`dra to squash our little going away party. If you would be so kind as to kill them and their little crystal projections off I'm sure we'll all be one step closer to getting what we want.'

In the very far northern part of the zone are three groups of slaves. Kill all the KOS NPCs around them. Note that the shissar sustainers summon time-based adds (two at a time), so you will want to focus on killing them first. You'll see this emote as they summon adds:

The shissar sustainer raises its arms into the air and conjures two more allies to aid in the fight!

Upon the death of the last mob:

Belissa the Barker calls out to you gratefully, 'That's the last of 'em. I'll wait for you at the center square.'

Belissa the Barker roars at the remaining resistance members, 'Pack it up you lazy lot and get to the center. We've got a war to win!'

Gather allies from the Aqueducts 0/6 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Find Kilithyr in the aqueducts below the city and rescue any remaining resistance members that may still be alive.

You say, 'Hail, Kilithyr'

Kilithyr says 'You're just in time, savior. A gang of Vyzh`dra's brutes have started exterminating the survivors here. Flush them out so the resistance can put an end to this nightmare. Go now, quickly!'

In the aqueducts, do the same thing for the six groups of slaves there. To get to the aqueducts, you can jump down the well in the far northeastern part of the zone (note that the well area is full of mobs, so you will probably get this task step update last).

Mobs in the aqueducts tend to hit for a max ~17,500. Upon the death of the last mob:

Kilithyr calls out to you, 'That's the last of the brutes down here. I pray that the gods look favorably upon you as you enter the tower.' His voice grows quieter, '...I have a bad feeling about this.'

Gather allies from the Pit 0/4 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Meet up with Grulid near the great spires in the northeast. Several shissar reanimators are using the spires to amplify Vyzh`dra's powers over the city.

You say, 'Hail, Grulid'

Grulid speaks in a whisper, 'Good, you've arrived. These necrotic enchanters have trapped my battalion in some sort of stasis using the power of these pillars. I believe slaying them will lift the veil on the monuments and free our allies from their grasp.'

Around the well in the far northeastern part of the zone are four groups of Shissar. Note that these appear to be aggro-linked in groups of three. Kill all of them to free the slaves in this area.

As you kill mobs, you'll see emotes:

The western spire shakes violently and breaks into pieces, revealing its true nature.

The great crystal shatters into pieces, weakening Vyzh`dra's illusion.

The southern spire shakes violently and breaks into pieces, revealing its true nature.

The mighty shard loses its power and falls to the ground, lifeless.

The eastern spire trembles and cracks slightly.

The eastern spire shakes violently and breaks into pieces, revealing its true nature.

The giant crystal explodes in a shower of deadly pieces.

The northern spire trembles and cracks slightly.

The northern spire shakes violently and breaks into pieces, revealing its true nature.

The enormous shard fractures into tiny pieces, loosening the shissar's hold on your allies.

As the final crystal spire shatters into pieces the frozen resistance members regain control of their bodies.

Grulid joyfully exclaims, 'I knew from the day we first met that you would be our savior. I shall rally these troops in the center of town and await your arrival there!'

Meet your allies at the center of the city 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

This updates in the city center (north of the arena, where the giant statue is).

Vyzh`dra's voice fills every corner of the city, 'How is it you expect to defeat me in my own domain!? Does your power blind you from even the sssimplest truths in front of your eyes?'

Vyzh`dra continues, 'Look around you. You would lay down your lives for these soulless vessels? There is no victory for you here.'

The fear tainted sky parts, revealing Norrath in the distance.

Vyzh`dra speaks, 'A final obstacle for you to overcome if you truly wish to join me in my tower.' Your attention shifts toward the stone statue in the center of the pool.

Defeat Vhezush, the Stone Sentinel 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Vyzh`dra's power over the city has not yet been severed. He has animated the statue in the center of town to protect the portal to his seat of power. Destroy the final portal guardian!

Note that Vhezush gains strength as he lowers in health:

The stone sentinel crumbles, becoming more susceptible to damage but more dangerous in combat.

At its worst (under 10% health), it hits for a max ~30,000 (possibly even higher). Kill it to update this step:

Vhezush, the Stone Sentinel has been slain by _____!

The ground shakes as the stone sentinel falls dead. A portal has opened at the base of its pedestal.

Vyzh`dra's speaks slowly, you are unsure if he is furious or simply toying with you, 'Clearly I should have known I was not safe even in my own domain from such mighty conquerors. Please, join me at the top of my tower and I shall lay down my arms and shower you in the treasure you so clearly deserve.'

Step through the newly opened portal 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: With the stone sentinel defeated, the portal to Vyzh`dra's seat of power is open. Step through the portal north of the statue's pedestal.

NOTE: Once the portal is activated, your group is ported into the tower. Once in the tower, you will not be able to return, so if you're going to engage either of the two optional nameds in the zone, don't port in yet.

Enter the portal to Vyzh`dra's tower.

A flash of light blinds you as _____ activates the tower portal. You open your eyes to see the dominion's master standing over you.

Vyzh`dra looks down at your party with aloof contempt. He speaks with a mocking tone, 'Thisss is the army you've gathered to dethrone me?'

Grulid grips his weapon tightly as he glares at the empowered shissar.

Confront Vyzh`dra at the top of his tower 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Vyzh`dra the Godslayer grips his blade tightly and swings it high over your head. You are confused by Vyzh`dra's hysterical laughter until you look around the room. A quick survey reveals that most of your party is either dead or lumps of lifeless crystal!

Vyzh`dra the Godslayer shouts 'As I said, there is no victory for you here. You fight for soulless projections of my imagination. Even when you hurt me most, you did it for me. There is no hope for you. No reward, no fanfare, no accolades to be won or noble creatures to save. You have willingly marched into the depths of misery and death to share in just a fraction of my personal torment. How does it feel to have those you care for, those you fought so hard to defend, suddenly fall dead with barely a whimper? It hurt me a hundred times more.'

Vyzh`dra the Godslayer looks you over carefully, 'You have changed greatly since our first meeting. Then again, so have I. That brittle broken body you put to rest time and time again is a distant memory of my power now. I bet you don't even know how I came to be the subject of your torture.'

Vyzh`dra the Godslayer continues, 'I aimed to usurp that false emperor, but was stopped by turncoats and backstabbers who had lost sight of our peoples' purpose. Those miserable snakes sit in solitude waiting for your kind to march in and pillage all they own. Not I, though. I am above such complacency. Look around you and see the fruits of my labor. Ssraeshza thought binding my body to the depths of the temple so that it could be slain by your kind time and time again was a fitting punishment. Yet now, now that my soul has escaped and claimed the power of that bastard that drove us from Norrath, I am stronger than he could ever dream to be!'

The portal in the center of the room begins radiating with power. Vyzh`dra has allowed you to exit.

Vyzh`dra the Godslayer looks to the fear shard suspended at the center of the temple, 'So cliche, to expound at length before doing away with you.' He pauses then smiles, 'Let us play a more fitting game. I shall let you live, to fester in your revelations, and I shall wait at the coliseum. When you are ready to end your lives, speak with Kilithyr. I will allow him to wake from this dream, conscious of the truth. But I'll send the rest of this lot back to their supposed lives with no memory of what happened here. Just so I can watch the baffled look on their faces when you try to explain all of this to them...'

With that, the mighty serpent vanishes and a chest of treasures is revealed as a mocking reward.

Claim your treasure 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: Claim the treasures that Vyzh`dra has left for you.

All of your endeavors to rescue the people of this city have proved to be a sick joke. Vyzh`dra has allowed you to live and return to the oblivious population of his illusionary city. He departed offering you a final challenge, seek Kilithyr if you wish to do battle with the Godslayer in his arena.

Optional Encounters

(Optional) Defeat Szalvinzir, the Arena Champion 0/1 (Chelsith Reborn)

Task Window Says: One of Vyzh`dra's champions awaits anyone who would challenge him in the great coliseum.

This is an optional fight in the arena. Killing it will gain you an extra item in the reward chest. The fight occurs in five phases:

Phase 4: Crystal form. Nothing special.

Phase 5: During the fight, spawns "a shissarian nightmare" (Lvl: 98) one at a time. 4 total. They hit for up to 10000.

I box this with 5 active toons and a merc (3xMage, Cleric, Chanter, Healer Merc).

Optional boss #1: Khozul.

Burn these numbers into your head: 80%, 60%, 35%, 25%, 15%, and 5%.

Cease attacking during that phase. Very easy fight if you remember that one thing. Stop all attacks while those buffs are up. Stop early because Clients and Servers aren't always in synch. Better to be early than late on this bad boy. Early takes a few seconds longer to win. Late can take hours longer to win. That's the fight. Stop attacks before he buffs, resume after they drop.
------------------

[NOTE*** This is a bit goofy on being able to get out. I've had one box see the doors unopened and cannot be opened and another see them closed. I've had them all see them closed. Make provisions to get back to the top of the mission. You may find yourself with no option but to leave and come back, campfire, or use a safe mage to CoH.]

Optional boss #2: Szalvinzir (Arena Champion)

If you win this, this is one of those fights you'll say "Hey that was a blast", otherwise you'll practice your Turrets Syndrome.

Phase 1: Easy phase. At 75, 50 and 25% he summons lots of wimpy snakes, low hps, almost no damage to my clothies. We beamed them down in 1 pass with the mages (3x beams on 3x mages), 1st beam usually killed most of them.

Phase 2: May want to burn the boss. We got more than 2 adds. It's at least 4, but I halted all attack on the boss until we got the adds down. Makes me think burning him thru this phase is the better choice. But I'm not sure everybody has the count right (there are 4 adds on phase 5, not 1).

Phase 3: Drag over the traps. Traps appear and disappear. PITA for a pet class but everybody knows how to do this stuff.

Phase 4: Tank and spank, basically a rest phase.

Phase 5: Red con. He summons FOUR adds, one at a time. We CC'd them once and just burned him down and de-agroed them, went to the top of the arena and the four adds retreat to the four "corners" of the arena. THAT's important! ONE of them is going to agro into the soft part of the group rather than heading to the fight because it's a sure fact one of them will hit your from behind. Lots of options here. You could even drag the fight to the tunnel and work it from there, the adds would have to walk through your tank. [I took to planting my group there while I tried to clumsily drag the trap guy around chasing my pet.]

If phase 5 were time based rather than hit point based I wouldn't expect each mob to his its own corner.
=================================

Anyway, we got all the strange black rocks we wanted and FINALLY got the Limestone Oddity for my warrior :)

Has anyone noticed that bow and arrows don't work on the portal tenders? I tried it the other day and found I was rather useless except for melee
Some tips
# Aug 14 2013 at 7:53 AM Rating: Good
I 3 box this with bard, shaman, necro (group gear, about 2k aa) and 3 mercs: tank, wiz, cleric.

On the 4 portal tenders, it's not necessary to balance the HP (and it's a PITA), instead:
  • dps them down one at a time like a normal mob
  • 1 toon will get the pull debuff - just hold that toon's back key down and you will be out of melee and can still cast
  • merc tank will pong between them, set passive between mobs if you need break
  • don't know if it's a bug, but I get the pull once on the first tender, after it wears I never get it again from any of the others

Regarding all packs of mobs in next 3 stages:
  • each one has npcs that attack the pack when you aggro, unless you have a hate spell they will keep the npc's in place
  • in takes about 1 min for the npc's to die, so I aggro each pack with bard then fade, so by the time I need to pull all the npc's are dead
  • all the mobs in packs are mezzable

Gather your allies where the world ends

  • Set up a little ways from the mobs, I use the area where one would camp silvi the mistress in normal zone
  • sustainer adds spawn at the location where the sustainer was pulled
  • if you are far enough away, adds will show on hate list but not auto pull
  • you have to kill all the adds to get the task update
  • if they do auto pull there will be plenty of room to CC them if needed

Gather your allies from the pit

  • packs are linked, so while they are mezzable they cannot be split
  • when done here do NOT go down this teleporter for next part - it drops you into a pack of mobs

Gather your allies from the aqueduct

  • I use teleporter D to go down to one tunnel end and work towards middle
  • mobs in center and in each wing
  • mobs are linked, best way I've found is to aggro them, while npc's are attacking them I mez them all, then engage one at a time

Final boss hits harder as HP goes lower. At 10% or lower merc tank dies easily. I pop all discs, including defense / heals around 20%.

Good post poepoepoe. Several good ones on this. Poe's is such a complete guide I'm not reposting a compiled edition of a guide but merely adding a few points to his. Bro and I 2x3 box'd this (all toons). 2K-5K AA's 3-mages, wizzie, enchanter, cleric, all 100's except the 98 wizz.

First fight: Not sure if they changed it. None of our gang got the pull debuff. We just worked our way around dropping them one at a time. Easy fights. Buffs of each dead one landed on the next, by the time we got to #4, It appeared like they didn't have any more stinking buffs, #3 and #4's buffs appeared to be about the same.

Gather where the world ends fights: We found the easiest thing to do was mezz the summoners, save him for last. It's not timed spawns it's health % spawns (50% and 20%). We fought the other KoS mobs, then fought the summoner last. We mezzed his summoned adds and picked them off, went well that way.

Guys at the well surface are listed third but you'll probably fight them second. DO NOT DROP IN THE WELL, mobs await. Somebody said D was clear. Not all the teleporters are clear.

Last guy: Don't nuke right after the emotes. Wait two tics then nuke. After the 10% emote, the heals were landing for 10-30% of normal.

Every 20% or so this mob will get a new ability. At 80% he got a reflection buff that lasted about 2 ticks. At 60% he got a large damage shield. I'm not sure what he gets after that because tank and I died instantly once the damage shield came. Also he has high hp but it doesn't seem like he hits very hard.

Edit: Went back and tried him again after this post. His reflection buff is called Shadowy Reflection and his damage shield is called Shadowy Spikes. These both last about 2 ticks. At 80% he uses reflection and at 60% he uses damage shield. Starting at 35% and every 10% after that he will use both the damage shield and reflection at the same time. Also along with this he will cast a dd+knockback+stun on random targets during the fight. I parsed him at about 10 million hps which is about the same as named in the normal t3 zones. The highest hit i saw out of him was 18990. Also he does have rampage. Boxed him with a 100 monk and 98 shammy with tank / cleric merc.

The adds the sustainers spawn are not time based they are health based. They spawn 2 adds at 50% and 30%. Also these adds will spawn and run from where the sustainer was standing so i would recommend you clear the area before you pull the sustainers.

For the aqueduct area they are agro linked and will hit very hard if you have 2 or 3 so you will want to have someone cc with root or mez for this part.

The final named is a really easy fight until you get to the last 10%. Starting at 10% he will hit extremely hard. I would recommend you save all of your main burns and defensives for this part.

This guy has 5 phases (you have to kill him 5 times)
Phase 1 - he summons a bunch of grey con snake adds
Phase 2 - he summons 2 blue con adds, unsure if it is timed or HP%-based
Phase 3 - shields himself (essentially DA's himself) and there will be a trap that spawns in the arena, you will have to drag him to the trap (oh by the way, he summons) SK yank works really well here
Phase 4 - turns into a hydra and just beat him down
Phase 5 - turns red-con and summons an add, we died here.

The event does reset if you wipe and don't re-engage within about a minute or 2.
