Marton Sayer may be found in a cottage in Qeynos Hills at around /loc 1400, 300, 9.

You say, 'Hail, Marton Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'Welcome. Please stock up on provisions, especially if you are headed toward the lair of the vile gnolls. If so, I wish you much luck and many gnoll pelts! I also have knowledge of a [powerful dog]. I pray you do not encounter him.'

You say, 'What powerful dog?'

Marton Sayer says, 'I have encountered a gnoll who spoke the common tongue. He dared to call himself Lord Elgnub. He swore that some day we would cross paths and he would snatch my infant son Joseph from our home. He would stand no chance against me and the mighty [Gnoll Slayer].'

You say, 'What is Gnoll Slayer?'

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, Joseph Sayer. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

Marton's initial dialogue is slightly different if you speak to him while carrying the baby, after asking about the gnoll slayer you get:

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, [Joseph Sayer]. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

You say, 'Joseph Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'You speak of my son, Joseph Sayer. He is but an infant and is safe here with Mira and me... At least, I believe he is.'

Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around Blackburrow. Kill him and loot Baby Joseph Sayer, which you should bring back to Joseph.

Marton Sayer says, 'Baby Joseph! Look, Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub made good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this you shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of its [true potential].'

You say, 'What true potential?'

Marton Sayer says, 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Along with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this gnoll might be. If you can find the journal and the eye, return them with the Gnoll Slayer to me, for I have been searching for decades.'

Head to South Karana. Kill a one eyed gnoll (located in the northern part of the zone (/loc?) to loot a Gnoll's Eye. Kill a Lteth Val Scribe to loot a Journal of Greater Enchantment. Give the eye, journal, and intermediate Gnoll Slayer to Marton.

Marton Sayer says, 'The eye and the journal! What a great day! The Gnoll Slayer shall be returned to full strength because of you. Your service to Qeynos will not soon be forgotten.'

Best proof I can give

Here is the unedited picture that I submitted to Illia's Beastiary, showing Lord Elgnub in the spike pit in Blackburrow. You can see two spikes and the underside of the ledge above the locked door.
Compare it to the pic Illia's has of Elgnub.
Good luck all.

#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 13 2000 at 2:00 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The sword is lore but not no drop. Do some research BEFORE u post man. Click the link to the pic of the freakin sword, it takes all of 5 seconds and it cleary shows the inspection of the sword :)
#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 13 2000 at 1:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This sword is NOT no drop, check the link to the pic of the Gnollslayer up above the postings, it's lore, but NOT no drop. I have one myself and I have put it in the trade window for my friends to inspect. This is Frank here btw :)

#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 16 2001 at 2:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) my god, give up! do you have one? then don't post useless info! (and i know this is useless, but if I'm reading up on a quest I want to do, crap like "It is", "It isn't", Is too, is not... is really annoying.) thx
Elgnub's level
# Aug 16 2000 at 9:12 AM Rating: Decent
One other thing, Elgnub is around lvl 25. Illia's Bestiary has that as his level and he was high green to me at 31 when I battled him.
Elgnub or Tranixx
# Aug 16 2000 at 9:11 AM Rating: Decent
Sorry Klayn I don't think that was Elgnub. He gave me trouble at 31, he would've slaughtered a lvl 20. Sounds to me like you ran into Tranixx Darkpaw, he's a rare spawn that wanders the top of BB near the zones to Everfrost and Qey Hills. He's around 20. One answer will certainly settle it, did he look like all the other gnolls in BB only bigger? Or was he kinda white like a split-paw gnoll? Good hunting to all.
Lords spawn
# Aug 14 2000 at 10:34 PM Rating: Decent
Lord whathisface does spawn. I saw him awhile ago, crossing thru bb to get to everfrost. I was lvl 20, he was equal to me, but with assistance he began to run, fast, and he didnt come back. And ididnt get faction hits so i'm guessing he wasnt killed and just despawned or something.
gnollslayer, double damage?
# Aug 12 2000 at 9:07 AM Rating: Decent
One other thing, tried the gnollslayer out on the gnolls in Highpass (currently lvling in Highkeep) and it did NOT do double damage against the gnolls as it was rumored. Maybe the enhanced version does the double damage. Maybe it works on split-paws or BB gnolls. Wouldn't be surprised if it works on split-paws since LE is one and he's the quest gnoll. I'll try it again every now and again and maybe if I got to paw anytime soon I'll lug it along with me hehe. Good hunting.
Frompo's assumptions
# Aug 12 2000 at 8:48 AM Rating: Default
Lemme see if I get this straight, instead of checking this out for yourself by going to BB and killing every HS you can find, you instead come here and insult my intelligence? If you were anything more than a stupid twit yourself you would've read the rest of the posts on this page, seen the evidence that various others have posted supporting the HS death leads to LE spawning theory and then checked it out for yourself. What I am 100% sure about is this; an HS spawned, LE was not on track, I killed the HS, looted then immediately hit track. LE was up. Make your own conclusions but don't make yourself look like a fool by calling someone stupid for working hard on a quest then posting it to help out other people. Grow up and grow a brain Frompo. O and btw I can assume whatever I please. :) Read Balduran's post from July 22nd. His camping Elgnub went exactly the same as mine, kill a HS a dozen times and LE pops on one of em. Try it yourself stupid stupid Frompo.

most of the game works like that! there are very few triggered spawns. most are random spawns with placeholders.
the pic i took
# Aug 10 2000 at 7:38 AM Rating: Excellent
Well I was just able to check the pic I took of him and it's a good one, it shows him in front of the door, a couple spikes and in the corner you can see part of a giant snake (the last 2 denoting the snake pit). It truly is a good pic and you can also see me conning him a high green, and just before that you can see the text "You have slain the gnoll high shaman," confirming how I triggered him. If you still doubt his existence post your email here, I dare you :). I'll send the shot to Allakhazam and to Illia's, don't know if they'll do anything with it, but it confirms a lot about him.
got him :)
# Aug 08 2000 at 11:16 AM Rating: Excellent
I killed Lord Elgnub Mon morning, 5am PST on the Bristlebane server. Took me a week of camping him of around 4 hours a day. Killed about 10 High Shamans and the last one was the one that triggered Elgnub. I decided to let him cast his spells instead of killing him right away, so he stood there happily buffing himself and his fellow gnolls. When he stopped casting I had at him and he dropped promptly. I left the 2 elite spots up and the other random spot had a commander in it. I looted then immediately hit track. Lo and behold Lord Elgnub was the second name on track. I was practically jumping in my seat as I ran to the snake pit. He was standing right in front of the locked door. I took a screenshot or 2 and moved in close for a better one. He attacked me!?!? I am a 31 ranger. He conned high green to me and I did get xp off the kill. Don't know whether he aggrod because of the lvls or because he was a split-paw gnoll. He almost immediately harm touched me for a bub of life. I killed him with around half my life left. I looted the baby and a practically worthless bloodstone ring off him. I turned in the baby and got the gnollslayer. I doubted the existance of this gnoll, but think about it, the hs room on my server isn't camped 24/7, the hs is a horribly rare spawn, and Elgnub doesn't trigger every time he dies. To say Elgnub spawns once a week or even a month when there's not a high level pounding the hs room would not be inaccurate. If anyone still doubts his existance post your email here. I'll be happy to send you a pic of Elgnub sitting in front of the locked door in the snake pit with at least one or 2 spikes showing and maybe (can't remember have to check the pic) a giant snake. Good hunting and good luck.

This quest needs to get fixed
# Aug 07 2000 at 9:26 AM Rating: Decent
I'm a 30 warrior and I hunted in BB for about 10 levels, I know the zone like i know my house, he does not spawn in BB. No one on Vallon that i know has seen him spawn in BB. I have seen a different named gnoll in qeynos hills but never seen Lord Elgnub.

Is a newbie blissfully slashing gnolls I saw the gnoll lord in BB as he railroaded a group before they dropped him with some help from a bunch of watchers in the main gallery who were attacking his train. I saw him, he is real....as witnessed by Frostpipes a bard of POVAR.

Confirmation-First Part
# Aug 05 2000 at 12:46 AM Rating: Decent
Just to confirm it - Lord Elgnub does spawn in the snake pit. I killed him last saturday and received the sword from Sayer. I was a level 27 Ranger and he was tough, but with a couple of friendly heals I killed him. It is a 6 dam, 28 del sword as stated before. As for the rest of it.......I wish I knew. BTW, this was on the Nameless Server.
broken quest
# Aug 02 2000 at 6:57 AM Rating: Decent
Did it/he happen to say which particular part is broken? Since so many are claiming to have done the first part I'm assuming only the second part is broken and the unenhanced version of the gnoll slayer is still attainable. What's wrong with completing the first (and possibly most time consuming) part and then letting it sit in the bank waiting for Verant getting around to fixing their game?
Ester the tester
# Aug 01 2000 at 8:57 AM Rating: Decent
Ester the tester is a spokesperson of Verant's QA staff, roaming on the QA/bugs forum. If their own QA staff says the quest is broken, trust me, it really IS broken!
ELGNUB'S PIC
# Jul 31 2000 at 6:59 AM Rating: Decent
A picture of Elgnub is posted in Illia's Bestiary, there's a link to it on the left scroll of this site (thx Allakhazam :) it's a great bestiary). It's a good pic too, you can clearly see the door by which he spawns and if that's not the locked door in the snake pit of BB I'm a gnoll's uncle.
RE: ELGNUB'S PIC
# Oct 06 2000 at 7:21 AM Rating: Default
That's the pic I submitted back in the day, when I got Gnoll Slayer, but I'm pretty sure the pic I submitted showed more of the spike pit (ie, two spikes, and the underside of the ledge that's right above the locked door). Guess they edited it. And gave me credit hehe.
Thanks for the compliment, I thought it came out pretty well too :)

Sorry guys but this quest is not in...

According to Ester the Tester, this quest is NOT able to be done....
he says..
# Jul 24 2000 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
that a great one eyed white gnoll took a magical gnoll eye that fits into the hilt, the gnoll also took a book that explained how to return the eye in place. you dont have to hand in the baby to find out about this, anyone can just ask him 'what true potential'.
None of this matters though, since the rest of the quest is broken (check the QA/bugs board at the station, its in a list of confirmed broken quests.)
What About Its [True Potential]?
# Jul 24 2000 at 2:47 AM Rating: Decent
Ok so you've explained why it seems that Marton's son can be in the possession of Bungle and Marton wouldn't know it, but what did he say when you questioned him about [true potential]? Did he mention needing a preserved gnoll eye and gnoll tome or would he not respond to the bracketed words at all?
Here it is
# Jul 21 2000 at 11:40 PM Rating: Decent
Well, I got the gnoll slayer the other night (wed?). The only thing I can tell you for certain is that his spawn is directly related to the gnoll high shaman (not everytime, I think I saw the high shaman maybe 10 times before Elgnub spawned). Elgnub spawns immediately after the high shaman dies, so try to keep him close to the spike pit (Elgnub spawns in spike pit, not related to either snake in there, don't bother killing them). The spawn for the gnoll high shaman seems to be totally random, sometimes I cleared the room, other times I left some elites up, he's spawned in both situations. I can't remember if the high shaman spawned twice before Elgnub, but always be ready for Elgnub if you get two high shaman back to back. Elgnub IS a SK and I would guess he's 20+ maybe as high as 25 or so; he took almost two bubbles from me at 37 (bard).
Here's the explanation for the "my son is safe at home" business.... When you hand in Baby Joseph Sayer to Marton, he says, and I quote, "Baby Joseph!! Look Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub kept good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this you shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of it's [true potential]."
So.. he THOUGHT his son was safe at home, but Elgnub payed him a visit and stole Joseph without Marton knowing.
Gnoll Slayer stats: Damage 6, Delay 28, Weight 5.0, LORE ITEM, War, Pal, Rng, Shd, Brd, Rog.
And there you have it. This was completed the week of July 17th, 2000. Wednesday I think.
hey rjfras
# Jul 21 2000 at 7:47 AM Rating: Decent
Hey rjfras, did you happen to kill the gnoll high shaman while clearing the elite room (I'm assuming you mean the room with the 4or5 spawns that spawns comms and shammies and even the hs sometimes)? So far these posts seem to learn towards that info on how to trigger this semi-mythical creature.
