Marton Sayer may be found in a cottage in Qeynos Hills at around /loc 1400, 300, 9.

You say, 'Hail, Marton Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'Welcome. Please stock up on provisions, especially if you are headed toward the lair of the vile gnolls. If so, I wish you much luck and many gnoll pelts! I also have knowledge of a [powerful dog]. I pray you do not encounter him.'

You say, 'What powerful dog?'

Marton Sayer says, 'I have encountered a gnoll who spoke the common tongue. He dared to call himself Lord Elgnub. He swore that some day we would cross paths and he would snatch my infant son Joseph from our home. He would stand no chance against me and the mighty [Gnoll Slayer].'

You say, 'What is Gnoll Slayer?'

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, Joseph Sayer. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

Marton's initial dialogue is slightly different if you speak to him while carrying the baby, after asking about the gnoll slayer you get:

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, [Joseph Sayer]. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

You say, 'Joseph Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'You speak of my son, Joseph Sayer. He is but an infant and is safe here with Mira and me... At least, I believe he is.'

Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around Blackburrow. Kill him and loot Baby Joseph Sayer, which you should bring back to Joseph.

Marton Sayer says, 'Baby Joseph! Look, Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub made good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this you shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of its [true potential].'

You say, 'What true potential?'

Marton Sayer says, 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Along with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this gnoll might be. If you can find the journal and the eye, return them with the Gnoll Slayer to me, for I have been searching for decades.'

Head to South Karana. Kill a one eyed gnoll (located in the northern part of the zone (/loc?) to loot a Gnoll's Eye. Kill a Lteth Val Scribe to loot a Journal of Greater Enchantment. Give the eye, journal, and intermediate Gnoll Slayer to Marton.

Marton Sayer says, 'The eye and the journal! What a great day! The Gnoll Slayer shall be returned to full strength because of you. Your service to Qeynos will not soon be forgotten.'

Now you have to run around doing the SK cycle to get these two gnolls to spawn.
Mob availability

I attempted to find the scribe and the one eyed gnoll a couple weeks back with no luck. I came back today with a ranger alt and they were easily trackable. The scribe was up, after taking him down another scribe popped, followed by the one eyed gnoll. The location given (1700, -180) is essentialy accurate, each time a new one popped it was in that approximate area.

Don't lose faith, they should still be around. At least they were today on Cazic.

Have been looking for the One Eyed Gnoll and the Lteth Val Scribe in vain for a couple days (Real time days). I have been using my 40 ranger, who is the toon that wants the final Gnoll Slayer, but have not seen either of them pop one time. I have marked both of the spawn points noted above and ranged back and forth between the, have logged on another toon at same time to monitor both locations at same time, and have even taken major sweeps south to cover the entire zone. Not once have I seen a sign of either on. All the toons I used have tracking maxed, so we should have seen something if one had spawned. Is this broken on the Prexus server???

I just finished this quest and thought I'd add a little to the posts here. I agree with Lord Agnahim that A Lteth Val Scribe and A One Eyed Gnoll are placeholders for each other but I think that one is as likely as the other to spawn. I killed the scribe 4 times before I got the One Eyed.

I also followed the scribe around for 3 hrs. last night to see if there was any specific path. If there is, it has more than 30 points to it. I did get a general idea of where to find them though. Draw an imaginary line through the well at -30, -104 through the center of the centaur camp and extend it the the East and West borders. The gnolls will not be found south of this line. They will go as far north as the bank of the river and all the way east and west to the borders.

My suggestion to you is to stay near the skeleton camp and keep a look out for the splitpaw (grayish/whitish) gnoll, unlike the Tesch type (yellowish orange). Beware of Zrithsadioun who looks like one from a distance. He has a large aggro radius I've found out, though he doesn't chase you if you get outside of it quick before he kills you. He has a skelly pet.

One last note: The One Eyed is pretty even to a lvl 36 Warrior. I killed him with 2% of my health left and I have pretty good armor and weapons for my level.

Good luck!

Yeah, Zrithsadioun is a level 50 Necro with a level 40 skeleton pet, who drops "Voice of Karana". He will snare you, and casts Direct Damage spells, but doesn't chase you... at least if you dont **** him off.

Both the scribe and the one eyed gnoll now spawn in the northern part of South Karana, near 762, -1349. They appear to be eachothers' placeholders, and the scribe is the rarer of the two (in 30 mins, popped 3 one eyed gnolls and 1 scribe). They spawn within 5 mins of the kill. They are also wandering NPCs so use a tracker!

I have seen the Lteth Val Scribe four times today he was running around near the Undead ruins where Lord Grimrot spawns. I tracked him to that area every time.
All you need to know to finish your Gnoll Slayer Quest

I just completed the final part to the gnoll slayer and did it solo, this is what I learned...hope it makes things easier for you:

First, go kill the one eyed gnoll. When you enter Splitpaw Lair (SL), turn on your superior camo, if you have it, or any invis. I am a level 51 Ranger and have Sup Camo but I bought a Tolan's Darkwood Helm for my indoor camo before 51.

Now, with your invis, run straight into SL until you come to a set of large wooden doors, double doors. When you go through, there will be a bridge on other side. Fall off the bridge to your right. There are a couple of gnolls at bottom but np with camo. Only one way out of the "gorge" so take it. There will be a hallway to your right and a door to your left. Go through door to your left. There will be a campfire straight ahead and that is where the one eyed gnoll spawns (/Loc 600, -10). The PH was a Nisch Mal Gnoll and spawn time is 7 minutes.

On the second spawn the one eyed popped. Easy kill, gone in 60 seconds, give or take : ) Make sure you root and no nuke, he could run and start a train : ( I rooted, snared, and dot'd and sat there to watch him drop.
The only loot from the One Eye was the Gnoll Eye.

Next, go back through the door (towards the "gorge") and take the other hallway. Don't forget your invis. Follow the corridor and will open into a room with stairs going up. As you face up the stairs, there is a door to your left and hallway to your right. Take the hallway to your right. Will go into a small room with a campfire. There are two Lteth Val Gnolls here, one near the campfire and one in the corner of the room. The one in the corner (NOT nearest the campfire) is the PH.

I rooted both of them then hacked out my frustrations. The LV gnoll nearest the fire was tougher than the PH, hit for up to 48 damage, but only took me down to 97 % health, with buffs. I rerooted the PH and then dotted him with Swarm and Imm and he died without melee. Then the final mob spawned.

Once the PH was down, the Lteth Val Scribe spawned 6 minutes later and, fortunately, the other LV gnoll did not spawn. I could see how this LV Scribe could give peeps problems, but I got lucky, here is what happened...

Wasn't paying attention, thought it was PH so from opposite corner I rooted and started casting my DOT. Saw him casting and thought, "nuts!" He immediately cast Tashan which stuck..Uh oh...rushed in to start hacking and kicking to try stun and interrupt spells. Didn't work well but only thing I could do. He then cast Instill twice but I resisted both times. Then he went to Suffocate which I resisted as well. He then went back and casted Instill three more times and I resisted again (thank goodness). Last he started hitting but for only 6 damage each time. In total, he hit me for a total of 12 points of damage! It could have been much worse but was lucky, I think 'cause my vs. magic is not too high.

Now, for the hard part...getting out. There is a barred door at end near secret tunnel that you could get out of if it would open. I tried everything but could not get out. I spent two hours looking for an exit to no avail. Luckily I have a gate potion I keep on me for just this occassion:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/recipe.html?recipe=3168

This is from the Velious Shawl Quest from Thurgadin (shawl #4) and you are suppose to give to the coldain so he can get home. Well, make another and you can use it! Very cheap to make, everything is foraged so you dont have to spend 500 plat for a gate potion.

If you do not have a gate potion, you will need to take along someone who can gate you home. If you know of another way out, please post. I am sure I will be doing this again when my charges run out.

Sorry for length but wanted to be thorough. Hope this helps!

The mobs in Splitpaw are so much lower level than a 51, it's no wonder nothing stuck. And even if it did, those are minor spells to deal with. Both mobs in there are dead quick. As a matter of fact, you can clean the whole area between the two spawns to get some fine steel weapons and a little change.

TO GET OUT: Go up from where the One-Eyed gnoll spawns and all the way back in that hallway. Stand at the barred door and wait for the wanderer on the other side. I pull him and he opens the door, then I run past him and kill him from inside. Then I reinvis and run the rest of the way out.

The pet is only a level 34 Shaman's pet, but for long farming sessions where even the pet is red to the mobs, it's a nice little help to make the farming go faster. On most stuff I fight now, he only hits about once every 30 seconds because he's so green to the mobs.

A very good walkthrough. As a 54 ranger I walked in, did this, and walked out without ever falling below 99% health.

Two helpful hints:
-MR is good, it makes the scribe a pushover.
-You can chain levitate your way back out of the gorge without using a gate potion. I have a pegasus cloak so it was doubly easy, but just casting will work as well. Only should need about three casts. Just glance around and you'll see where the walls are sloped to allow climbing by levitated beings.

This help but...if you pull the mob isn't more easy ? At lvl 51 you don't care about add ten gnoll ...

The only question i want to ask is: at this lvl the summon is really interesting or its just for fun ?

Quest rundown

Sitting in Split atm waiting for One-eye to pop, thought I'd give a brief rundown to those confused with quest here.

Firstly, remember that this quest is actually 2 quests, one for the first gnoll slayer and the other for the final version. These quests involve Blackburrow (first) and Splitpaw (second) so don't get the two confused and go looking for Elgnub in Splitpaw or something.

First Slayer:

Simply kill Elgnub and turn in baby to Sayer. Faction does not seem to matter with Sayer (as long as you aren't totally KOS). Elgnub spawn has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with any other spawn in Blackburrow. I can say this with confidence having spent many, many hours there. Have observed, however, that once you kill Elgnub, he is then likely to pop again within 20mins-1hr. He will despawn after about 5-10 minutes of popping, and if he does his next pop time will be very random, and most likely long.

Final Slayer:

Kill the two gnolls at the locs listed above in the quest description, they are accurate. The best way to do this is to invis your whole party, work your way into Paw until you get to the first brige, then drop off the right side of that. The campfire with the One-Eyed Gnoll is beyond a door directly to your left, and as long as you keep that door shut there are no adds there. The Scribe is very close to there, simply go back through that door, turn left, and then take 2 right turns until you hit a dead end room with the Scribe in. BE CAREFUL in a group as he charms, and you will die quickly when killing each other. The simple way to avoid this is to disband the group before engaging him, and communicate through a chat channel or /ooc; he will then not charm group members to attack each other.

The Scribe is a fairly common spawn but does occasionally have a PH, the One Eyed Gnoll is a less common spawn, but will turn up every 4 PH's or so.

BE SURE to memorise the way out of Splitpaw on the EQAtlas (eqatlas.com) map before you go in, as if you have to run out looking at the map you will die, pure and simple. It is not particularly far, but it can be confusing if you haven't done the route before. Better still, get a druid along who can port the lot of you out.

Go back to Qeynos and turn in your bits, baddabing baddaboom, you're done.

His PH is a Nisch Mas Gnoll. takes a couple of kills to get quest mob to spawn. Make sure you have a full group if you plan to kill this guys cause you will have to fight your way to him, unless you have invisibilty spells for you and another same goes with the Lleth Val Scribe.

I have killed Elgnub numerous times and can't begin to think about what may or may not trigger him. Since 30 (Rgr), I have camped the courier and kept an eye on track to see if Elgnub pops. If he does, I simply jump off onto the bridge below and take the falling dmg, then through the door, around a couple corners and there he is. I kill him and take the baby back to Marton right away for 2pp and good XP (@ 34 was still getting 1/5 bub XP).

The courier is much tougher and drops all 4 items req'd for the Club of Gnoll Bashing, which can be MQ to the point of having a club and all 4 items. The Encryption key (ring) appears maddeningly often (especially when you already have 1) so if nobody else wants it, destroy the one you have and loot the corpse. This appears to reduce the consecutive repeats of the items which will help you complete the quest, sell your current CoGB for 190pp and get another one from Rilca.

If you want the Gnollslayer (Final), which is what I am working on right now, I agree that 2-3 in group with Invis + SoW is likely your best bet. As a Ranger I always cast Snare which reduces the likelyhood of your engaged MOB making it far enough to get adds. Have yet to see either MOB with the journal and the eye so don't know how easy it might be to pull each out individually.

Linked to the Courier?

While trying to get my third cask on Erollisi Marr I observed that Lord E appeared twice right after the courier went down. I know that Gnoll Slayer is a much older quest then the gnoll basher, but I saw this happen twice in a row so it might be worth noting.

I'm not sure about linked to the Courier but is definitely linked to the Gnoll Tactician. Spawns twice in succesion after the taction goes down. I'm not certain where the first spawn is or if it is in the same place. I would kill the tactition.( thought he was part of the Courier Quest, Til I figured out better) I noticed him on track about 7 mins after. Then, he dropped off track. Then again about 5 mins after that he was always in the Snake pit. Did this a few times for a few different characters.
RE: Linked to the Courier?
# Feb 23 2003 at 12:13 AM Rating: Default
Sorry to disappoint you, Lord E is linked with talking to Sayer in QH and hustling to BB and the snake pit. Clear it and he spawns almost immediately. If he popped after you took out the courier it was a coincidence. Someone else must have talked to Sayer in QH while the snake pit was in the process of being cleared. Just an FYI to anyone who is having trouble getting him to spawn. I've done this sucessfully twice with 2 different characters.

You're wrong. Talking to Sayer to get Elgnub to spawn is an unfounded rumor. I have sat in the snake pit and watched Elgnub pop and despawn on his own then repop again within seconds of despawning and nobody ever came looking for him. I killed him myself only to have him repop again less than a minute later. There is no way in hell that many people were asking about the gnoll slayer quest in such a short span of time.

Noticed the EXACT same thing. There are those 3 main areas around the snake pit. I was power leveling a lvl9 monkey. he was a bit scared to fight them and I sent him in "/petmonk attack damnit" and he went in. We killed the currior and those other two different named. and the Lord E spawned - he actually spawned like in/on the snake pit door... the one that will not open but looks like a door.

You have to be sneaky to get into the areas where the needed spawns to finish the gnoll slayer quest are. Simply forming a group and forcing your way in WILL NOT WORK. The gnolls in Splitpaw are too strong, repop too frequently and stand too close together, generating LOTS of adds. Nothing short of an all out guild raid will keep Paw clean long enough to do this quest that way, and the compensation for the guild is not nearly worth the effort. Slipping in with a small group while invised and SoWed and rooting the mobs you have to fight so they can't run away and pull adds and then sneaking back out while invised and SoWed is probably the best way to do it.

Spawn Rate
# Jan 02 2003 at 10:18 AM Rating: Decent
During a BB clear out last night, the Lord spawned 4 times in 40 minutes. While killing just about everything in the dungeon might have triggered the first spawn, the others just appeared. Spawns 1, 2 and 4 were duly killed but the 3rd spawn was not as the Lord just vanished while a root was being cast.

Greetinga All Fellow Gnoll Slayers!,

I also found the quest easy as for the Lord in BB. On the Drinal server he spawns in the snake room...aka the Spike, approximately every 30-35 minutes. I buffed any and all newbies that were hunting as I waited. The quest was fun, and the weapon is neat with the pet and all.

Ok Lord Egnub took forever to spawn I had many n00bs run to the house and do the dialog many of times. (surprizing how many trips 2 pp will buy from a lvl 6) Finally he popped around 6 am game time I waitied a long time for him to spawn.(prolly 4 hours real time) After he spawned I took him down quick grabbed the baby (loks like a kerran doll) and finished the quest. NO this is not a triggered spawn!

I got the eye on my ranger, decided I'd go ahead and do the quest. Used my druid since he could use the faction from the bb gnolls, and got the baby.

np, turned that in, got the first gnollslayer.
Got the book with him, np.

Tried to turn in the sword.. "I have no need of this"
Tried to turn in the book.. "I have no need of this" (and ate the book)

So it's not MQable now? Or is the quest just plain broken?

Some Suggestions for Completing
# Sep 02 2002 at 11:55 AM Rating: Excellent
I finished this quest yesterday. Once I was lucky enough to see Elgnub, the rest came pretty easily (all in a day). A few suggestions to those who would follow:

1. Blackburrow & Elgnub
I've read the posts on this guy, and the one thing about which I can be absolutely certain is that I have no idea what makes this guy spawn. I talked to Marton several times, I killed every nasty rat walking the upper story, I sat and waited, I killed every elite and commander in the place. My suggestion -- read 'em all and make up your own mind ... but be prepared to wait.

2. Splitpaw & One Eye / Scribe
Splitpaw was an easy solo for a 52 Ranger, but not without its bit of excitement. Camo, Levitate and Enduring Breath are good for getting in and getting out. Snare is important to stop the runners, since there are many gnolls near the spawn points. As for directions, the locations are accurate, but the map in EQAtlas is a bit misleading on the locations. My suggestion -- use the map called Hashimasa's Map, for which their is a link under the Splitpaw zone entry here on Allakhzam's. It's a bit more accurate for loc's for the rooms that matter for this quest. Here's how I did it ...

Camo'd, Levi'd and SoW'd, I entered Paw. I passed through both sets of doors to where I was standing on the first bridge. Facing forward (North) you want to drop down on your right. There is a door down on that level in the NE corner. The door goes North, and there is a passage that goes East. Through the door is a single gnoll at a campfire. This is the PH for the One Eyed Gnoll. Get close so as not to aggro any others, then Snare and give him a beat down (OK, so this is written from the ranger point of view). Standard PH camp at that point -- people report 7 minute timer, so have your damage shield up or whatever your style requires, and kill until the one-eyed appears. Took me three or four placeholders.

The Scribe (or his PH) is in a nearby room, and he has a little buddy. From the campfire, go back through the door and take the eastbound passage to your left. It winds around a bit, going through a room with a stairway, but heading generally South. The southernmost room is your spot. Two guys in the room, the one in the northeast corner is the PH for the Scribe. Some of these folks are casters, so be warned. I broke the spawn by rooting the non-PH, killing the PH, and then giving myself some time with the other one so they would be somewhat apart. In my case, the non-PH was not a caster, so he just stood their glaring at me :). Scribe spawned on the second iteration. He does have some nasty spells, managing to fear me or something, but only after I was rooted -- not the most effective strategy! When I was free he was gone, but I went looking and he came running back. Made short work of him after that.

For the escape as a solo with no Gate it was a bit of an exciting run. I used Sup Camo and EB, heading up past the campfire and the first pool to the larger body of water (around p800 or p850 on the north/south loc). I swam the entire way up to the Judge/Executioner room, and ran back south praying to Tunare that Camo would hold. It did, and I made it back out to the gates.

Again, the combination of the EQAtlas map (with MOB info) and Hashimasa's map (which I found to be a little more clear) was important to me, given that I had little or no Paw experience. It's a pretty empty zone, so going in solo and making the run back out should get the adrenaline flowing again.

Good luck, friends. May Tunare, Brell, Karana, or whatever deity you fancy guard you on your quest.

LOL! He feared you while rooted? That could be a strategy for future consideration. When fighting mobs that fear, root yourself, first, so you don't run around out of control drawing aggro from every mob in range. It could work. ;=)

Just did this quest

Just completed this quest, and I had a blast with my guildmates taking down the gnolls.

The Scribe was already up when we went in, and the One Eyed Gnoll popped after killing his PH. (Although, we had to kill the PH twice)

As a lvl34 ranger, who's constantly Plat poor, (spending too much on armor!) and a relative new player, (only about 4 months) this thing rocks! I have never hit with any weapon for 68dd, and this thing did it more than once, although the average high was 45-60. Made short work of gnolls though!

With Jagged Pine now open, I expect to get quite a bit of use from this thing....
Gnoll Slayer

I have the final Gnll Slayer sword. True, I have used up all my charges, but you should have seen their faces... "a ranger? with a pet?? No way!"

Anyway, this is also a great sword for roleplaying. I was in the new Jaggedpine Forest the other day and I heard news of a 'gnoll war'. Me, being the gnoll-hating half elf ranger that I am, jumped right in. It was crazy, high level gnolls left and right, trying to kill NPC's.... the Gnoll Slayer lived up to it's name.
Lord Elgnub spawn

The Lord will spawn without killing anything like Elites or High Shamans or triggering any quest. I was in BB, early morning east coast, only a bunch of low levels like 5-8, and only about 10 people in zone. I waited at the pit for an hour and a half and POP, the Lord spawned without me going around clearing anything.

However, I did kill anything that came into or spawned in the pit of spikes except the snakes. Just in case the Lord was on a spawn table, i would kill anything that spawned in his spot but wandered around thinking that it would path back to its original spot.

So leave all those Elites alone for the little guys and just sit your butt down in the spike pit and wait. The Lord will pop (and probably depop pretty quickly) so keep awake!

Took my level 40 ogre into Blackburrow tonight to kill the gnolls for faction. Ran around endlessly, killing gnoll after gnoll (except those on the top floors where most of the lower levels spawn, I left those to the groups/players up there at the time.) I occasionally ran by the spike pit near the false door where Elgnub spawns checking for him. Eventually, he spawned and I beat him to a pulp w/o any problems at all. Being an ogre it was a tough decision to keep the child versus eating it raw. I was able to do the turn in with dubious faction with the merchant in Qeynos Hills.

What I know:
1. Talking to Maytron Sayer has absolutely nothing to do with spawning Elgnub. I didn't do it and he popped just fine for me in under an hour.

2. For some odd reason, 5 minutes after I killed him I came back to find him respawned! I pulled him to a nearby group of 10-15's and helped them wax him for the exp. Since the Baby Sayer is Lore, i let them keep the second one.

3. Elgnub...hmm, sony seems to love anagrams (is this the right word?) Take Qeynos for instance, spell it backward: S-o-n-y-E-Q. Now, do the same with Elgnub. You spell out BUNGLE. As in to ***** up. Very ironic if you consider that the second part of the Gnoll Slayer Quest was apparently broken for ages! Perhaps, Sony is evil afterall and created the quest just to irritate people

4. They made it NO DROP! CURSES! They did have a good reason for doing so: The final version of this item gives you the ability to cast the level 34 (?) shaman pet spell three times. There was no level restriction on it, meaning that you could give the sword to a level one player and he/she could cast the pet and level themselves easily to 15-20 in no time at all. Still, making it NO DROP means that virtually no one is going to quest it anymore. You'd be just as well off getting a Wurmslayer which will have the same attack vs delay (25/40) all the time instead of just against gnolls.

I HOPE I HELPED SOMEONE LOL
