Marton Sayer may be found in a cottage in Qeynos Hills at around /loc 1400, 300, 9.

You say, 'Hail, Marton Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'Welcome. Please stock up on provisions, especially if you are headed toward the lair of the vile gnolls. If so, I wish you much luck and many gnoll pelts! I also have knowledge of a [powerful dog]. I pray you do not encounter him.'

You say, 'What powerful dog?'

Marton Sayer says, 'I have encountered a gnoll who spoke the common tongue. He dared to call himself Lord Elgnub. He swore that some day we would cross paths and he would snatch my infant son Joseph from our home. He would stand no chance against me and the mighty [Gnoll Slayer].'

You say, 'What is Gnoll Slayer?'

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, Joseph Sayer. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

Marton's initial dialogue is slightly different if you speak to him while carrying the baby, after asking about the gnoll slayer you get:

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, [Joseph Sayer]. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

You say, 'Joseph Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'You speak of my son, Joseph Sayer. He is but an infant and is safe here with Mira and me... At least, I believe he is.'

Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around Blackburrow. Kill him and loot Baby Joseph Sayer, which you should bring back to Joseph.

Marton Sayer says, 'Baby Joseph! Look, Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub made good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this you shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of its [true potential].'

You say, 'What true potential?'

Marton Sayer says, 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Along with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this gnoll might be. If you can find the journal and the eye, return them with the Gnoll Slayer to me, for I have been searching for decades.'

Head to South Karana. Kill a one eyed gnoll (located in the northern part of the zone (/loc?) to loot a Gnoll's Eye. Kill a Lteth Val Scribe to loot a Journal of Greater Enchantment. Give the eye, journal, and intermediate Gnoll Slayer to Marton.

Marton Sayer says, 'The eye and the journal! What a great day! The Gnoll Slayer shall be returned to full strength because of you. Your service to Qeynos will not soon be forgotten.'

/sigh

I finally cancel my account, and this quest is FINALLY (after years) fixed. I know Lord Elgnub used to spawn and you could get the first sword, but then he stopped spawning like 2 years ago. Now they finally fix it and add the second part =P

I wonder if anyone still had an original Gnoll Slayer from before the lord stopped spawning? just wondering if the bane damage was retrofitted to the old ones.

I got my GS yesterday from the elusively RARE spawn of Lord Elgnub (First time I saw him) luckily, a necro was there to help out our group, since our warrior attacked the Lord (and died) so the necro killed him and I asked if I could loot, I did, went to QH and got it. This sword is alright, but I would imagine that unless you are lucky like me to have permission to loot the baby at a lower lvl, killing this around lvl 20 gnoll for a 6 28 sword is pretty crappy considering at lvl 20 you can have a better weapon. Hell, my alt wep is a blackened alloy LS (10 29) and its 1 pt. less dmg than the gs (gs only better against gnolls and is slightly faster), but better since its gives off light like a gls. I only did the quest because I could, not to mention getting 1pp for it =) Anyway, unless you kill gnolls your whole life or just want to say you did this quest, I wouldnt do this quest.

"unless you kill gnolls your whole life"...

Well... one can do that for quite some time, actually. There's a few gaps, but there's a lot of gnolls to be hunted.

Blackburrow, HighHold Pass, Lake Rathe, East Karana, South Karana, HighHold Pass, Split Paw (13% xp bonus and mobs to hunt till 40? Sweet), Iceclad Ocean. Of course, by 40, one would hope you've attained something better than this. Personally, I stopped hunting gnolls for xp at 30, though I could've stuck around the spires in South K till 31.

It can be done... but might be rather boring. Offhand, I don't know of any gnolls of greater strength than those found in Paw (or named ones that'll rip you a new one).

As a Ranger of Surefall Glade, I grew up fighting the Sabretooth Gnolls in Blackburrow and later the Torn Ear and Splitpaw Gnolls in South Karana and Paw. I've wanted this sword since I heard of it, since fighting Gnolls carried me through nearly 25 of my 52 levels. Now I finally have it, and here's the info.

The following is the completed quest:
Marton Sayer in the cottage in Qeynos Hills mentions a named gnoll named Lord Elgnub who speaks common tongue, and has threatened his family. He also mentions the Gnoll Slayer, a sword passed down by his family. Go to Blackburrow and kill the following:

LORD ELGNUB - Blackburrow
He spawns in the snake pit directly in front of the fake door (/loc is approx 215, 140). Spawn time is atleast 2 hours, doesn't appear to have a place holder, and is perhaps triggered by speaking to Marton Sayer in Qeynos Hills but definately can't trigger more often than once per 2 hours. He is a ShadowKnight (had a pet and Harm Touched) and was way green to a level 52. Drops BABY JOSEPH SAYER - LORE NODROP

Take the baby back to his father and the grateful man will give you:

GNOLL SLAYER
LORE MAGIC
Damage: 6 Delay: 28
Bane Dmg: Gnoll +5

He then mentions something about the true potential of the sword. If you inquire further, he mentions there was once an enchantment placed upon a gnolls eye which was embedded in the sword that gave the sword powers to protect against disease and call forth a wolf to fight for you. He then says this eye has been stolen, along with the only book that can restore the enchantment and eye to the sword. Go to Splitpaw and kill the following:

A ONE EYED GNOLL - Splitpaw
He spawns in Paw right at the small campfire (/loc 600, -10). His placeholder is a Tesch or Nisch Mal Gnoll (brown gnoll) and his spawn time is 7 minutes. The one eyed gnoll is strictly melee and light blue to 52. Drops GNOLL EYE - LORE NODROP

A LTETH VAL SCRIBE - Splitpaw
He spawns in the corner of the little room (/loc 370, -30). His place holder is a Lteth Val Gnoll (white gnoll) and his spawn time is 7 minutes. There is another white gnoll in the room, closer to the center that is not the PH and is on a regular spawn time. The Lteth Val Scribe is a caster and was green to level 52. Drops JOURNAL OF ENCHANTMENTS - LORE NODROP

Return the Gnoll Slayer, Journal of Enchantments, and Gnoll Eye to Marton Sayer and he will give you:
GNOLL SLAYER
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM
Slot: PRIMARY SECONDARY
Charges: 2
Skill: 1H Slashing Atk Delay: 40

Bane DMG: Gnoll 10

Confirmation: Elgnub is on a 2 hour spawn time and has no place holder. He appears in the spike pit. I killed him at 2pm and some friends joined me shortly after, we waited around and at 4pm on the dot, there was Elgnub again. Some people have told me that you need to clear the commander room to get him to appear - does not seem to be the case. We certainly didn't either time and I don't think there was any other group hunting there.

He is about lvl 24. He is a Shadow Knight and he will Harm Touch for 200ish points of damage. He may or may not have a pet - did the first time, didn't the second time I met him.

Tip for those who can summon pets: if you have your pet with you when you are harm touched, the pet should absorb some of the HT damage, so you're hit for less.

I have heard the one-eyed gnoll is lvl 34 but I'm not old enough to complete the quest yet. =)

Someone over on Safehouse posted this info:

The sword is 6/28 +5 Bane to gnolls. Sayer says if you give him the slayer, Eye and Book (Guessing the book and eye drop in paw) he will bring out the true power of the sword. Says it will fight Disease and "Call forth a wolf to fight beside you"

Just finished it. Was excited as hell. The eye drops off the One eyed gnoll in paw, and the book of A gnoll Scribe. The result is a 15/40 10Gnoll Bane +25 Vs Poison sword with 2 Charges of Companion Spirit. Its lore but Tradeable. Not all that bad, and awesome to finally solve it.

#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 02 2002 at 3:00 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Y'know, I was often wondering the value of the GnollSlayer. Then I noticed that when you right-click lil' Joey, it says "This is a meal". We all know what bizarre cooks the Troll kind are, so you go to Grobb and find one of those books with the recipe. You make "Baby Back Rips". Mmm..mmm good eatin. But, alternatively, you can give the Baby Back Rips over to what's his face in the baking supply shop in Grob. The one you hail and talks about eating high elves. In exchange for the Ribs he gives you a lore item. The Edisun Ez Bake Oven. All you have to do is have a Druid cast invoke lightning on the oven and it functions just like you are a master baker! Very cool quest

here is what Marton Sayer says about the swords next step:
-----------------------------------------
You say, 'what true potential'

Marton Sayer says 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Along with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this hnoll might be. I have been searching for decades.
--------------------------------------------

Hmmm, a great, one-eyed, white gnoll is probably in the Splitpaw Lair...thou where /shrug. The Book is the chalenging part. From what Marton says, it could be anywhere in the original Norrath (Pre-Kunark). Im tapping different sources to try and (hopefully) solve this bloody quest.

You can't take your gnoll slayer to the next stage. At least not yet. Maybe now that they are introducing new weapons that do higher damage to specific types of mobs, then maybe you will be able to get the enchanted gnoll slayer. But right now that part of the quest is broken.
hmm....

it figures that vernat would make a nearly impossable quest and give you a wepon that a lvl 10 wouldn't use so i say ***** it dont do this quest.

My name is Ravenia on the Z-server. Here is the complete quest:

To all those interested in the quest for the Gnoll Slayer long sword, I have just finished the entire quest, and it
has been a while. I suppose that the gm's were wrong
before, and so I continued my quest to do it. As you
know already, you must speak with Marton Sayer in
Qeynos Hills to begin the quest. At the same time you
speak with him, you have around 10 minutes or so to get
to BlackBurrow and clear out the spawns around the
spike pit simultaneously, which is rather tough to do at
the same time, but its possible. As you do this, Lord
Elgnub, who's true name is Hantik Elgnub, spawns and
goes after you, saying something along the lines of "you
have attacked my brothers, now feel my power of death."
You fight him and then he has the baby, I suppose every
time, but I've only got him once. It seems to spawn him,
it doesnt always work. Anyway, you return the baby
Joseph Sayer to Marton Sayer, and he is pleased that
you found his son, that he "loves more than anything in
the world" and he gives you the:

Gnoll Slayer
Damage 6
Delay 28

Not much of a sword, pretty much the same as a
combine long sword without the magical aspect, but he
does tell you that the eye of the sword, a gnoll eye, had
been stolen from the sword, as well as the book, during a
time when he had travelled. He says it was at night, and
thought it was a gnoll, but says he had sent out his
daughter, Elizabeth Sayer, to try and find it, and that she
believed it was somewhere near the Splitpaw area. And
she would bring it back so he could enchant it, for only
he could. Well if you have a ranger, and wait a very long
time, she will spawn, but when she does, if you are
nearby, she will exclaim "So, my father has sent you after
me to get the missing pieces from the sword. You shall
die!" and she attacks. I believe she may be around lvl 35,
im not sure exactly. Green at 50. When you kill her, she
has a book, called Sayer's Book, which is a normal book,
but you cannot read it, and a note, in gnoll, saying that
Elizabeth would get the eye from this gnoll, whose name
is Arrarex Tesch, which I believe must be some high
member of the gnolls, who are called Tesch Mal gnolls. He
tells her to meet him in his new residence of Splitpaw to
recieve the eye, and also to find some support to kill her
father for the sword. He is a very rare spawn at where
Shaman Ren'rex used to spawn in Splitpaw. You kill him,
and get the eye. Then, you must return the book, the
sword, and the eye to Marton Sayer to get the finished
product.

Enchanted Gnoll Slayer
Magical, Lore, No Drop
Damage 6
Delay 28
Disease +10
Effect: Gnoll Slayer

The effect does double damage to gnolls if they are
attacked. The sword does not summon a wolf, as many
people thought it did. So here is the walkthrough. It took
me about a month to finish, and it was pretty tough near
the end, in paw. One week til Hantik Elgnub spawned,
two weeks til I found Elizabeth, and I have not seen her
since, and then around another week before Tesch
spawned in Splitpaw, and he had eye only, though he
may have other things, which has been the way of paw,
and I am 50, so be prepared for a long and drawn out
Ravenia...

I think I can confirm that this explanation of the quest is utter bollards. I did the first part of it myself, and both the name and the quest text given here are total fabrications. I don't know if a second part of the quest is in or not, but there's certainly no clues relating to any Elizabeths.

What pisses me off is that they had to go and make it no drop. If it took you that long to get the quest at 50, when there are MUCH better weapons out there (and quests for that matter). WHoopdie do, double dmaage on a species that we hope we're never gonna see again.

I also killed Elgnub, returned the baby to Sayer and got the GS (6 28 version).

Now he says i need the tome and eye to activate the true power of this weapon(or something along these lines.

1) is the tome the one known as Gnoll hide tome? or could it be something else?

2) is the eye the preserved splitpaw eye? or could this also be something else.

3)and last, when you get these items,do you turn all 3 items over to Sayer to recieve the true GS?, or could it also be someone else?

If you are possitive on these please post,if your guessing, recieving 2nd hand info(ie: rumors),or not sure, dont say anything.

Yes, ill agree, Everlore is full of misinformation. But the one touch of true info can be found. Since you have (or Found) the stats on the enchanted version, how about letting the rest of us know where or who you got it from. Perhaps what items are found where, or which creature from where to kill? Even if you just know where the mob is (ie the jail area of the paw..), let us know! It may be a cheap weapon but, its becomeing frustrating!
RE: The real stats.

2 Things...

1) "NOTE - It has been confirmed by Verant that the rest of the quest is broken"

2) What other weapon have you seen in your lifetime, Kunark and Velious included, that doubles damage vs a mob? I've seen weapons that proc spells vs mobs (I.E. GhoalBane)but never a weapon that doubles it's damage output vs a certain mob.

**You have been reading the BS on EverLore WAY to much. It's begining to infect this site as well.**
RE: The real stats.
# May 25 2001 at 11:35 PM Rating: Decent
Umm, silly question but... if you don'tt have the Enchanted sword, how can you confirm the stats? I've heard this before myself, but it's always been "Oh, my guildmate knows a guy who's brother had a screenshot but lost it when his PC crashed"... to know the stats, the quest would have to have been completed. Last I heard, Ester the Tester confirmed part 2 had *never* been implemented. <shrugs> Of course, that's second hand info, too, so...
