Marton Sayer may be found in a cottage in Qeynos Hills at around /loc 1400, 300, 9.

You say, 'Hail, Marton Sayer'

Marton Sayer says 'Welcome. Please stock up on provisions, especially if you are headed toward the lair of the vile gnolls. If so, I wish you much luck and many gnoll pelts!! I also have knowledge of a [powerful dog]. I pray you do not encounter him.'

You say, 'What powerful dog?'

Marton Sayer says, 'I have encountered a gnoll who spoke the common tongue. He dared to call himself Lord Elgnub. He swore that some day we would cross paths and he would snatch my infant son Joseph from our home. He would stand no chance against me and the mighty [Gnoll Slayer].'

You say, 'What is Gnoll Slayer?'

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, Joseph Sayer. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

Marton's initial dialogue is slightly different if you speak to him while carrying the baby, after asking about the gnoll slayer you get:

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, [Joseph Sayer]. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

You say, 'Joseph Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'You speak of my son, Joseph Sayer. He is but an infant and is safe here with Mira and me... At least, I believe he is.'

Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around BlackBurrow. Kill him and loot Baby Joseph Sayer, which you should bring back to Joseph.

Marton Sayer says 'Baby Joseph!! Look, Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub made good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of its [true potential].'

You say, 'What true potential?'

Marton Sayer says 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Alone with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this gnoll might be. If you can find the journal and the eye, return them with the Gnoll Slayer to me for I have been searching for decades.'

Head to South Karana. Kill a one eyed gnoll (located in the northern part of the zone (/loc?) to loot a Gnoll's Eye. Kill a Lteth Val Scribe (/loc?) to loot a Journal of Greater Enchantment. Give the eye, journal, and intermediate Gnoll Slayer to Marton.

Marton Sayer says 'The eye and the journal! What a great day! The Gnoll Slayer shall be returned to full strength because of you. Your service to Qeynos will not soon be forgotten.'

RE: ??

I found the one eyed gnoll in about 2 minutes he is beyond the double doors and through the 3rd door once you reach the bridge type thing after the 3rd door look off to your left and you will see a magician gnoll with a mag pet on the lower lvl below you drop off there and you will come to a hallway with a door to your left go beyond that door and there is the one eyed gnoll or his phr by the fire , one eyed gnoll conned even to my lvl 35 Rogue, as for the Scribe I can not find him the loc given is pos 370 neg 30 and at this spot was a (brown) not (white) tecsh gnoll I killed it for hours its not a 7 min spawn nor did it even spawn anything other than another tecsh gnoll so my question is : is this the right /loc or what ? if anyone can answer thnx , I am wanting to know about where does he spawn , in the double door room ? in the room beyond that ? deeper in Paw ? or where ? cuz on Prexus server he did not spawn nor did a Lteth Val Gnoll (told phr) spawn at pos 370 neg 30 for me ,,

Finally Completed the quest...
# Jun 02 2002 at 11:04 AM Rating: Decent

First I will confirm that you do have to speak to Marton Sayer and ask him about [powerful dog] to get Lord Elgnub *Bungle* to appear in Black Barrow. The first time I did this, he appeared almost immediately and I ran into BB to see him die by another group there. The next time it took maybe 5-10 minutes. Both times he was in the snake pit room appearing next to one of the side doors.
At lvl 33 (myself) he conned lt. blue to me and actually trashed me a bit with two HT of over 200 ea.

The one eyed gnoll (no caps) was actually a Lteth Gnoll placeholder each time not a Nisch. Otherwise everything else in Paw is very accurate in terms of placement and spawn times.

The MOST difficult thing about completing the quest was finding a good group of people to go into Paw because both gnolls are pretty far inside. Most people of course won't pass the dbl doors. Fortunately I was with a great group of mid 30s people and none of us died.

Good weapon against gnolls. My max so far is dbl attack of 73 dmg ea. against a Tesch. (at lvl 34) I don't mind the no drop tag. It makes it a little more rare. What I can't stand and think is a total waste are the only two charges of Companion Spirit. I've already wasted one being half asleep and double clicking on the sword when I was checking out its stats. I can see it being a curb for newbies but if its no drop, how easy is a newbie going to get the weapon anyway. There definately needs a recharge quest to go along with this.

Trouble in Paw
# May 28 2002 at 1:00 AM Rating: Default
My hardest time is trying to find the One Eyed Gnoll and Scribe. Ive been down there for hours now and have yet to see either even on track.
RE: Trouble in Paw
# May 28 2002 at 5:40 PM Rating: Default
As it says above both have placeholders. You don't get them on track because the placeholders are spawned instead. Splitpaw is one of those dungeons no one really hunts. The loot isn't attractive enough to bring in too many farmers. And the difficulty of the dungeon keeps the xp campers huddled close to the dungeon's entrance in fear. So chances are no one has killed the placeholders in there for quite some time.

What is the pop time of Lord Elgnub plz
# May 30 2002 at 4:42 PM Rating: Decent
Lord Elgnub spawns in the pit every two hours or so. You have to be on the lookout though because he doesn't stick around long. He is a level 23 Necro that has a hard nuke so watch it.
# May 25 2002 at 7:26 PM Rating: Default
I don't know how common he is, but he doesn't seem to be rare. Me and a friend were in the snake pit (with the spikes) and he came in. Day before that, I saw him in the QH zone, somebody had brought him up. So he seems to be somewhat common.
# May 30 2002 at 9:23 AM Rating: Default
ummm....excuse me. But how the hell could a mob that pops inside BB end up in QH?? I have never seen any gnoll that could pass through a zone boundary. You're FoS.

# Aug 17 2002 at 3:43 PM Rating: Decent
Another Tactic that could be tried is to have a high lvl druid change you into wolf form. Not sure this is necessary but ive heard people say that NPC's dont aggro on you when your in wolf form. My Troll buddy tried this and turned in baby sayer even though he was Dubious to Marton, and still got the sword. (side note) He became indiff to Marton after doing this.

Did the quest with my Ogre Warrior. Sayor conned dubious to me (can't remember ever doing anything to get my faction up in that part of the world). Didn't want to sell to me, but did talk to me. Could do the quest without any problems.
Still didn't want to sell to me after i did the quest, so much for being thankful :-).

15/40 10 gnoll bane damage 2 charges of summon companion Magic, lore, no drop. I wanted to add to all this that the slayer is multi-questable

Just completed the quest tonight. The final Gnoll Slayer is NO DROP. I thought that it could be sold... oh well, looks like I am stuck with a great special purpose weapon.
# Apr 20 2002 at 3:19 AM Rating: Default
I had a initial (crappy) version of the Gnoll Slayer on my alt. Logged on today and it was suddenly No Drop. I know it wasn't to start with as I killed Lord Englnub with my 39 warrior, definitely not the lvl 10 paly it is on. My guess is it was made no drop within the last two weeks at least on the Rathe server anyway.
# Dec 29 2002 at 3:30 AM Rating: Decent
LOL, deja vu. The same thing happened to my level 10 paladin after I logged on not long after a patch. I also play on the Rathe server, but I have a good feeling that this was done on all servers. They did it to stop the final version's pet spell from being abused. I'm guessing they made the first version of the weapon no drop, because the item is supposedly MQable, which means that if the first sword was able to be attained by a lower level player he/she could then just get the final part MQed. BUT, that doesn't mean that you couldn't just loot the baby at level one and then MQ it. IF ANYONE CAN PROVE IT IS MQABLE I'D LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT.

You guys keep saying things like yeah I soloed him at 34 and such and frankly i dont believe you.
Me and my friends have been trying to camp the two named spawns for the second part of the gnoll slayer and every time we have been chased out by a train. The only thing i can think to do is get a high level to run in smack the mob and drag him back to the stage! Ive all but given up on trying to get this weapon...and then i remember that against gnolls(one of my favorite things to hunt) this thing is a wurmslayer! hehe

Importance of the Gnoll Slayer
# Apr 07 2002 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
Apparently no one gets it... this is not just a hack and slash wep... imagine yerself as a level 1 human caster who takes his/her time and is careful enough not to run smack dab into a derv camp on the way to Oasis. You zone into Oasis with yer Gnoll Slayer in a main slot, right click and instant pet. Have a seat friend, yer pet will level you just fine. Practice yer measely spells on yerself for skill, med and make pet command hotkeys... within an hour you're in danger of dying with xp loss, even with the new level minimum of doing that. Bring yer spells with you, along the way you may just find that some of them are useful now. After a bit of time, visit Ill Omen and do it all again.

Better yet, try visitng KC with one sometime, for all you hack and slash types... or just for giggles go on a Kael raid and park yer pet with your raid group casters for a little added fun and damage while you smack him about and tell him to do the impossible. You may find this pet is fun and useful no matter what level or class, cept maybe those that can't use it and have their own pet.

and... yes, I have done this quest many times now, sold a few, used a few, and specifically tested a few. It IS clickable from a main slot... it IS usable even at level 1, which Verant will probably nerf when they figure out the potential of this item... well, am off to make sure all my characters have one with full charges on em so I can brag all about it after the nerf. Be safe folks.

Just thought I would post that this item was nerfed, good thing I got a few before that *althought the item was changed throughout* was made NO DROP amd MUST EQUIP to cast... leave it to me to be right about this. I just wanted a good item I could pass around, lol.

Nah, if I can put a Fungus Tunic, 30+ percent haste item and two SoS on a level one monk they wont nerf a 2 charge item.

this sword might be a must have with the plane of underfoot, just remember that the duke of below made the gnolls. so maybe there will be gnolls on the plane. we will just have to wait and see.
so they finally fixed this quest...

I find it rather amusing that this quest was broken for so long, and the first gnoll you have to kill, lord Elgnub... spell his name backward, maybe that's why they bungled it so badly. :)

I finished the first part of the quest last night, just wanted to share my experience.

Myself (25th Ranger) and my friend (34 Beastlord) went straight to BB after speaking with Marton. After camping for some time we decided to camp the Commander. Within five minutes of killing the Commander and Refugee Splitpaw, Lord Elgnub popped in the spike pit. He conned dark blue to me and between my partner and I the fight lasted about twenty seconds.

I cannot speak to suggestions that he is an SK or has a pet. I can only say that it was straight melee, he cast nothing and did not have a pet.

So wish me luck on the second half! And I'd like to extend thanks to Linuxgeek, my Beastlord friend, and Wumce, who gave many helpful suggestions.

Gnoll Slayer is an awsome weapon. I finished this quest in little under 2 hours with a lvl 36 druid. The most testing part is Lord Elgnub, not that he was hard but it takes time for him to spawn. He spawns in the snake pit with the spikes, I meleed him more or less and I jumped him befor he summoned a pet so I couldnt tell you what kind of lvl the pet is. And the locs given by the info above are close within a few numbers but they should give you a hint. At lvl 36 I soloed both the scribe and the One Eyed Gnoll. The One Eyed Gnoll does have 2 eyes when you look at him. When I killed the One Eyed Gnoll I rooted, drones of doom, ensnare, immolate, then backed off till root broke and replaced the DoTs when then wore off. In the end it died and I looted Gnolls eye. And the scribe is a chanter it spawned in front of me and charmed me befor I could casts a spell and then it gated when charm broke and another group killed it I felt lucky to loot the journal of greater enchantments.
I passed the Gnoll Slayer to my lvl 20 dwarf warrior and he does a lot of dmg to gnolls with it 62 max so far and 175 on a cripling blow, not bad for a 1 handed weapon.
If you have a high lvl main and plan on starting a tank do this quest it isnt hard. And go to black burrow then High Pass Hold and SK and paw because unless you are super twinked you wont find a weapon that passes Gnoll Slayer against gnolls.

Just out of curiousity .... why the hell would the mob gate after charm broke? Mobs don't gate just because they feel like it .... and I don't know of any mobs that gate to their spawn point FROM their spawn point. Sheesh ... either straighten out your facts or stop omitting details.

This is an awesome quest for guilds to do. My guild is talking about doing 3-4 of these at a time with one trip to Splitpaw. These (Final Version) are awesome weapons for lower level guild members, and Splitpaw is good fun for a raiding party.
