Waltor Felligan (Shaman Guildmaster) is located at +289, +373 outside the Shaman Guild in Halas. He's on Find (Ctrl+F). You must be Amiable or higher with Shamen of Justice to obtain this quest.

You say, 'Hail, Waltor Felligan'

Waltor Felligan says 'Hello, me friend! I'm the resident healer o' Halas. Please inform me when ye've a need fer me talents to [bind wounds], [cure disease] or [cure poison]. Might I add, if ye're a young shaman o' Halas, ye can also [assist in gatherin' fungus].'

You say, 'I will assist in gathering fungus'

If your faction is too low:

Waltor Felligan says 'The scales o' the Shamans o' Justice dinnae tip in yer favor. Ye'd best flee while ye still have the chance.'

If high enough:

Waltor Felligan says 'As the wooly spiderlings get ready to molt, they'll carry wooly fungus. Oftentimes, one can find wooly fungus growing on their bellies. I use this in me healing practices. I'll reward ye if ye can fill this jar full o' the valuable fungus. Don't forget to combine them before ye return it to me. And have yerself some rations handy, or ye may find yerself snacking on this tasteless food source.'

You receive Empty Jar, an 8-slot container (identifies as "Jar for Wooly Fungus"). Combine 8x Wooly Fungus (dropped from wooly spiderlings in Everfrost Peaks) in the Empty Jar to produce a Jar of Fungus. Hand this in to Waltor Felligan:

Waltor Felligan says 'Aye! Ye've filled the jar. I'll see to it that Holana locks this away. Tis difficult to obtain and we can only spare the talents of our young shamans. Allow me to give ye a reward. Thank ye kindly fer yer service.'

For the Bonus Faction week, this quest was adjusted as follows

+15 Shamen of Justice
+2 Merchants of Halas
-2 Circle of Unseen Hands
-2 Coalition of Tradefolk Underground
-3 Ebon Mask

So it looks like the formula is a 50% bonus/penalty except in the case where that would be less than 1 point, in which case it is rounded up.

It worked for my human warrior, you just need to raise your Shamen of Justice faction.

Try Cindl's Polar Bear Skins and Elixir for the Warriors, both easy and quick to finish, and
with no faction worsened.

buy more food and that should stop it... or just put the wooly fungus in the bank

Have you noticed how the computer places items in you're inventory in a certian order? In the new UI it's hard to read the numbers in your inventory slots but from top to bottom they are 1-4 on he left column and 5-8 on the right. You will automatically comsume food in the inventory starting in 1 and work to 8. So keep you're bag of food in the first slot to keep you from eating items you need for quests.

Beastlords can use some of these spells at level 15 and 22. So just keep them in the bank until then. An easy way to get spells, and other things, for such a neglected item.

I have done this quest with two shamans and it takes a long time to collect the fungus because the spiderlings are slow to drop this. You do collect a lot of spiderling silk in the process and my advice is to save these in the bank for selling to tailors later. I saw someone offering 30pp for stacks(this mean 20) of spiderling silk.
The spells are nice but the quest is to slow by the time I collected my 2nd jar full I was no longer getting exp from these spiderlings.

LOL I have seen spiderling silks selling for as much as 10pp EACH in the Bazaar. Spiderling silk is a great way for newbies to start building a bankroll.
RE: Too Long too Boring
# May 25 2002 at 7:43 PM Rating: Decent
30p per stack for SpiderLING silk is extremely high. I have seen this much offered for the stacks of silk threads though (which are 2 spiderling silks combined in a tailoring kit).

As for the this being too boring, and too long, I disagree. If you are lower level, you are going to be running into these anyways while fighting so you might as well save the fungus. When you get 8 of them go see Waltor, get the container, combine and viola. Experience, faction and a spell.

This seems to also be a good one for beastlords, primarily because it gives you a chance to get some of your spells before you can actually use them. IIRC, you get them at level 9, well in the first 9 levels you can get many of the spells that both Shaman and Beastlords can use. The main ones I see that he gives are Drowsy, Inner Fire, Endure Cold and Gate (which BL's dont get) but he does give others as well.

Personally I have been doing it with an alt for faction and as said, the silks are always wanted. Combine them into threads to take up less space (you never fail), toss them in the bank and wait for those who are offering good money for them.

I did this with my lvl 4 shammy. When I turned it in I got 1 plat, fleeting fury (a lvl 5 shammy spell) and a half a yellow bubble of exp., which was enough to ding me into 5 so I could use my new spell. For the ease of doing the quest (I'm killing spiderlings at that lvl anyways) and the reward, it was worth it.

I was using my level 6 Barbarian Beastlord (done the same Quest with my Shaman), I got a level 15 spell scroll for Sicken. I've never gotten anything of high value with my Bard Shammy. Who knows, maybe it depends on the type of character.

# Jan 27 2002 at 5:54 PM Rating: Default
My fungus (of the wooly variety anyways) keeps disappearing while I am hunting; is my BabaShaman just so hungry she is indiscriminating? Her metabolism is so high maybe she has been sneaking steroids on the side - has enyone else encountered this situation? Or, in typical fashion, is it just me?

You eat whatever item is first in your inventory, or what is first in the first bag in your inventory. Put the fungus in a lower slot than you regular rations and you should be fine.
Bandages
# Jan 13 2002 at 5:56 PM Rating: Default
Yes, a shaman does have healing spells, but they cost mana. If you are under half, then you can save mana with bind wound and bandages.
RE: Bandages
# Mar 04 2002 at 11:41 AM Rating: Default
yes healing does cost mana, but bandages cost money. the time spent bandaging is better spent meditating and casting heal.
RE: Bandages
# Sep 20 2002 at 12:23 PM Rating: Good

Always use bind wound whenever you are below half hp. You will be gratefull at mid-range levels, when you are oom, and you find that practicing BW from lv.1, at lv.15 or so will save your butts when with meditate, you still regen mana while Binding wounds, and you will be rdy for that pesky wandering mob somewhere that decides to take a bite from you while sitting down to med the rest of the way.

Hey im wondering if i should do this quest it will be easy though. But I thought that i can recieve things that are not for sale at the shamans guild. Which i was wrong and i ended up with a pile of old spells which i got at lvl 5. The spells are useless now and i wasted my time. I am lvl 21 and i say to other high lvl shamans dont do it its a load of crap.

Well this is another fine example of a quest doable by your brand spankin new lvl 1 shaman who happens to have no money to buy spells. After all, nobody likes beggers.

Fungus shortage
# Sep 10 2001 at 11:59 AM Rating: Default
Well first off, I also find that wooly fungus is hard to find on spiders. So it will take a while to collect the fungus you need. Meanwhile, you tend to get a lot more spider silk than fungus. So, what I have come up with as a good system for me is the following. Buy a sewing kit (small is sufficient), and sew together two spider silks at a time. Then, take what you get and combine them two at a time. Those (if you are successful) will become bandages. Just keep the bandages on you (they're less profitable to sell than the original spider silk), and if you ever get down to less than half your hit points after a battle, use your "bind wound" skill on yourself, which will use one of the silk bandages and hopefully partially heal you.

You may want to put one skill training point into tailoring and one skill training point into bind wound each before you start this. (Some skills require a one point activation before you can use them).

This way, you will build up your tailoring skill and bind wound skill. The tailoring skill will come in handy later when you try to sew together gnoll furs, 4 at a time, in a large sewing kit. (The idea would be to then take the product, sew 4 of those together, and then take the product from that and sew 4 of those together, which finally makes something you can use for armor or for the gnoll fur patchwork quest).

I'm just curious as to why a shaman would want bandages when they have healing spells. If you were to make the bandages, it would be much easier just to sell the stack of them to other players or shopkeepers. At least, that's my opinion.
RE: Fungus shortage
# Sep 28 2001 at 6:39 PM Rating: Default
Actually, you'd be better to sell stacks of spiderling silk or silk thread to other players than to make them into bandages.

This quest hasn't been too helpful to me. I keep receiving level 5 spells that I already own.
spiderling shortage

I started a shaman tonight and got to lvl 5 before camping. This was the one quest I could remember reading about. Tonight the spiderlings seemed to be hard to find and only 1 in 4 or maybe less had the fungus on. I know from a previouse character that they can be plentiful so maybe it was just the spiderlings were having a one off quiet night.
Very nice quest

Money maker?
# Jul 23 2001 at 11:45 AM Rating: Decent
I've done this quest about 3 or four times now. Each time I've gotten more and more money as a reward. Okay it's not a lot, first time it was like 8 cp, then 5 sp, then 1gp, and last time it was 4gp. But as a newbie each gp counts, and the exp and faction bonuses don't hurt at all. Raising your faction with the local merchants makes things cheaper and gets better prices when you sell items. Even now that I'm an 11th circle shaman, I still hold on to wooly fungus and turn it in when I collect 8. Extra money is still extra money, and it helps fund my smithing addiction. Besides most people regard the fungus as junk and leave it on the corpses, easiest way to get 8 pieces is to loot old spiderlng corpses everyone's ignored.

I am a 16th level High Elf Wiz. After I was told the scales did not tip in my favor, I started collecting these to sell. I had gathered 28 and could not find a buyer. I gave them instead to a first level shaman. She turned them in and was stuck on fungue the rest of the night. In less than 2 hours, she was level 5 and had almost all her spells. I suppose you could say that I now have a friend in Halas, lol.
Great quest!
# Nov 05 2000 at 12:00 AM Rating: Good
I have completed this quest 5 times. The only level 5 spells I actually had to buy were Summon Drink and Sicken. I got Cure Poison, Drowsy, Frost Rift (twice), and Gate.

You also get spiderling silks. Combine a pair in a sewing kit and you make a silk thread. Combine two threads and you get a bandage that weighs less than a normal bandage (0.2 vs. 0.5). Combine three threads and get a silk cord. One silk cord and one low quality bear skin combine to make a tailored large bag. Free spells, bandages and containers, Spiderlings are the way to go for newbie Shamen. Just be careful, they do assist and swarm.
Disappearing Fungus
# Sep 11 2000 at 9:28 PM Rating: Good
If you are lvl 3 and under you will lose the fungus if you die. I guess it has something to do with the fact that you are still getting newbie food and the fungus is considered a food source. I don't know. I do know I have had 6 or 7 fungi and died...then respawned and looted my corpse to find ZERO fungi there. Just a word of warning for any newbies wanting to do this quest.

Same deal with foraged items for Wood Elves, though I found putting stuff (veggies worth 1 gold + each) in bank seemed to save them from death problems. Like the old way to save no rent bandages etc by banking it before you camped.
So if you get a few and are concerned about losing them and happen t be in town, bank your container wil you have 8.

I put mine in the bank, and I still lost them after dying at lvl 3.

I also had it happen where I put the fungus in the bottle and just had it disappear when I put the next one in. The way I got it to work was to stack them in something else until I had 8 and then put them in the bottle.

If the fungus is stored in a slot higher than your food source, the fungus becomes your food. Little mushrooms with sweaters. :)
It's edible, too!

Note that the Wooly Fungus is Edible. If you have it above your food, you will automatically eat it. :-(
