At the end of the "Ivan McMannus' Remains" quest, you see:

Renth McLanis says '...I believe ye can assist with a more [dangerous matter] as well.'

You say, 'What sort of dangerous matter?'

***Requires high aimable faction to do this quest. If your faction is not high enough, he tells you to go see Lysbith and inquire about the gnoll bounty.***

Renth McLanis says 'A murder was done in Halas recently. A couple were killed by a pair o' rogues fer a mere pouch o' copper. The shaman gave chase and the main rogue, Paglan, fell beneath an ice floe. One got away. We must [hunt the murderer]. Will ye help?'

You say, 'I will hunt the murderer.'

Renth McLanis says 'Twas good old Dok whose brother and wife were slain. Speak with him at his shop. Ask him if he has [any information about the crime]. Return the head of the murderer and I'll give ye a [Langseax].'

You say, 'What is a Langseax?'

Renth McLanis says 'The Langseax was crafted to be wielded by a warrior only. Tis a one-handed slashing weapon with great balance to assist the warrior who masters it.'

Dok may be found in Dok's Cigars (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Dok'

Dok says 'Fine day to ye, ______. Welcome to me shop. If ye're searchin' fer a [cigar], ye won't be findin' any, more's th' pity.'

You say, 'Do you have any information about the crime?'

Dok says 'Aye. I happened upon the crime scene, but too late, more's the pity. I grabbed fer one of the rogues and got only a handful of his shirt. Before I knew it, I was left holding his sweaty shirt and he was far from the scene. I called fer the guards and they summoned the shaman. Methinks one died and one got away in the chase. I've heard rumors that the leader of [Clan McMannus] has spotted the culprit. Ye should go to the leader of Clan McMannus and tell him ye're [searching for the fugitive].'

You say, 'Who is the leader of Clan McMannus?'

Dok says 'Methinks it is Einhorst McMannus.'

Head to the fishing village in West Karana to find Einhorst McMannus (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Einhorst McMannus'

Einhorst McMannus says 'Greetings, ______. Welcome to the fishing village of Clan McMannus. We sell what we can here. Have a look around but, please do not buy too much. We must save most of our stock for delivery to our home.'

You say, 'I am searching for the fugitive.'

Einhorst McMannus says 'I see they have sent someone to hunt the scoundrel down. I am afraid I haven't seen the barbarian thief in quite some time. You can search and search for him here in the western plains, but I doubt you shall find him. Good luck.'

Ulrich McMannus may also be found in the fishing village (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Ulrich McMannus'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Welcome to the village of McMannus. We sell many goods. Feel free to look around - just keep your hands to yourself. Good day.'

You say, 'I am searching for the fugitive.'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Searching for someone, eh? You will most likely never find them on the plains. This is a vast area. I could have Frostbite help you search. He is quite good at [tracking prey].'

You say, 'What about tracking prey?'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Frostbite can track down anyone, be they man or beast. All one needs to do is obtain a SWEATY piece of clothing recently worn by the one you seek.'

Head back to Dok in Halas.

You say, 'Hail, Dok'

Dok says 'Fine day to ye, ______. Welcome to me shop. If ye're searchin' fer a [cigar], ye won't be findin' any, more's th' pity.'

You say, 'Where is the sweaty shirt?'

Dok says 'Now, why would ye be wantin' that smelly thing?!! I no longer have it. [Tundra Jack] came into me shop and bought it from me. He says he can wash it good and make a new collar for Iceberg out of it.'

You say, 'Where is Tundra Jack?'

Dok says 'Well, now, let's see... His name is Tundra Jack.. me first guess would be that ye might find him on the frozen tundra of Everfrost, eh?'

Tundra Jack wanders through Everfrost Peaks.

You say, 'Hail, Tundra Jack'

Tundra Jack says 'Good mining to you, kid! What are you doing way out here? You're gonna catch frostbite. The name's Tundra Jack, prospector supreme. Trained by the finest miners in Kaladim!! Me 'n [Iceberg] have been out here for three years now, searchin' fer fortune.'

You say, 'I need that sweaty shirt.'

Tundra Jack says 'Looking fer that blasted shirt, huh? Well, as you can smell, I didn't get to washing it, but I wrapped it onto Iceberg's collar. I'd say you can have it, but Iceberg kind of likes it now. The only way you're gonna be able to grab it from him is to feed him his [favorite meal].'

You say, 'What is his favorite meal?'

Tundra Jack says 'Iceberg has some picky eating habits. If he can't catch any goblins, he prefers [Lion Delight]. Lion Delight is his favorite.'

You say, 'Where can I get Lion Delight?'

Tundra Jack says 'I usually get Lion Delight from Teria O'Danos in Halas.'

Head back to Halas to find Teria O'Danos at -6, 34.

You say, 'Hail, Teria O`Danos'

Teria O`Danos says 'Good day to ye! Ye look a wee bit hungrry. I sell many fine foods. Please have a look. Might I suggest the [lion roast]? It is a wee bit expensive, but well worth it.'

You say, 'What lion roast?'

Teria O`Danos says 'The lion roast is quite good. Tis me specialty. Ah marinate the lion meat in mammoth fat fer two days before roasting it. Lion meat isn't common around here. I'll purchase what I can from strangers but I rely mostly on shipments from the Plains o' Karana. I'm presently searching fer someone to [pick up me lion meat shipment].'

You say, 'I will pick up the lion meat shipment.'

Teria O`Danos says 'It'd be grand o' ye to pick up me lion meat shipment. Ye must travel to the Plains o' Karana. Search fer a Northman fishing village. It should be Clan McMannus. Speak with the chieftain, Einhorst. Tell him ye're there to [pick up the lion meat shipment for Halas]. When ye return, I'll pay ye at least three gold. I look forward to yer return.

Complete the "Lion Meat Shipment" sub-quest to receive Lion Delight. Return to Tundra Jack and Iceberg and give the Lion Delight to Iceberg.

Iceberg growls with happiness and licks your face. Just enough time to swipe the sweaty shirt from his collar!! Iceberg then runs off to enjoy his lion delight!!

Your faction standing with Wolves of the North has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Shamen of Justice has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Halas has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors has been adjusted by 1.
You gain experience!!

Tundra Jack says 'Ha!! Looks like old Iceberg likes you. Either that or he's tasting you.'

Head back to West Karana and find Frostbite in a pen at -3533, -2236.

You say, 'Hail, Frostbite'

Frostbite RUFF RUFF

Give Frostbite the Sweaty Shirt.

Frostbite takes a whiff of the sweaty shirt and barks.
You gain experience!!

Frostbite runs off to the Northeast, tracking the murderer. He runs quickly so have Spirit of Wolf or the equivalent active. The murderer will either be Paglan or Basil. Once you find one of them (you may find Basil at -1436, -4816 while he is running):

You say, 'Hail, Basil'

Basil says 'To the death!!'

He attacks. Once he's dead:

You have slain Basil!
Your faction standing with Rogues of the White Rose has been adjusted by -5.

--You have looted a Barbarian Head.--

This identifies as "Basil's Head." Paglan drops another Barbarian Head which identifies as "Paglan's Head." Head back to Renth in Halas and give him the head.

Renth McLanis says 'Fine work! We've avenged our fellow Northmen and ye've earned yer Langseax. Wield it in the name o' Halas!'

The faction hits are negative, which is probably broken.

Your faction standing with Wolves of the North has been adjusted by -10.
Your faction standing with Shamen of Justice has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Halas has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!
You receive 8 gold from Renth McLanis.

You receive the Langseax.

Just finished this quest. Notes: Frostbite is in the Barbarian village, where Einhorst McMannus is. Gave him the shirt but did not take off. I can see why since Basil is so far into the zone.
Head NE and Basil hangs between the bandit camp and unkept messenger. Up by where Choon & Froon is on map. (-203.93, -8484.27). I did cheat and skip a lot of the runarounds. For the fun of it, I did the Lion Delight quest so I could give it to Iceberg and received the sweaty shirt. I turned in the shirt and as noted, Frostbite stayed in his pen; such a good boy. Basi was level 20 and found him with a high level ranger. Faction hit when killing Basil was -5 Rogue of the White Rose. The other faction hit as mentions comes from when turning in the head. Reward 2 gold, 1 plat, 4% xp and Lanseax: Damage 6 delay 23; no bonus damage.
Frostbite is currently broken.

Fun fact: Creating a character name of Basil or Paglan, will cause Frostbite to hunt the player.

While playing on Aradune (may he rest in peace), I happened to come across a player named Basil exp'ing in WK.
Funny enough, Frostbite came trotting along, approached the player-character, then returned home just as we would expect he should do to hunt the NPC Basil.

Some time after this I decided to run the quest, and as others had mentioned, Frostbite will accept the shirt as normal but not move.
My expectation is that the process of "loot-locking" and adding a * in front of the name, breaks the-now-21-yr-old script of searching for "Basil" (and logical assumption, Paglan as well).

It may also be logical that, if Frostbite were KOS to a low-enough level character named Basil or Paglan ("evil" race or deity for example), we could assume Frostbite may hunt them down and attack.
Enjoy!
Frostbite is currently broken.

Just did the quest and Frostbite never moved from his pen after giving him the sweaty shirt. Luckily I had a couple trackers in the zone and was able to track to Basil, even though his name was *Basil. I saw him using normal track, wouldn't have noticed if track was set to ralpha. I guess it was changed to hider trackers, but seems a waste, especially since Frostbite didn't track to him. I waited for about 10 minutes to see if he would eventually move, but never did.

Also he didn't spawn or even run near the loc noted (you may find Basil at -1436, -4816 while he is running), I found him much further northeast, past the ogres deep in bandit territory. I had a second tracker hanging out at the noted loc hoping to find him quickly.

Wolves of the North: -10 (15)
Shamen of Justice: -2 (3)
Merchants of Halas: -2 (3)
Steel Warriors: -1 (1)

These are the negative faction hits you get for turning in Basil's head. The numbers in red are what you get for turning in gnoll teeth. So not a huge deal unless for some odd reason you fall on a borderline. I can't confirm if Paglan has the same faction hits.

Paglan does yield the same faction hits, but the message from Renth is different. When you turn in Paglan’s head he says: “Incredible! We’d heard Paglan was killed attempting to cross an ice floe! It appears his escape was for naught, Ye’ve earned something greater than a mere Langseax. Ye’ve earned the Langseax o’ the Wolves. Tis an enchanted weapon meant for a warrior’s skill only. The Tribunal will watch over ye.”

I just ran this quest for fun and picked up a little info. Not sure if we really need it in 2014, but here it is.

Teria O'Danos is at -6, 34. Frostbite is in a little pen at loc -3533, -2236. He didn't start running right away (finding the scent, perhaps), so I headed northeast watching my track window for either Basil or Paglan. I caught up to Basil at -1436, -4816 while he was running east by northeast, but I'm not sure he was running straight.

And yep, the faction hits at the final turn-in are still negative. I guess that mistake was never fixed.

I had to do this quest 11 times to get Paglan to spawn. It was probably just a coincidence but I turned in a shirt while Basil was still alive and fleeing for his life. Frostbite returned to his kennel and upon attempting to hand in my 12th shirt he ran off and led me to Paglan. Basil is definitely a lot more common than Paglan but you can do repeat the quest with out ever doing the hand-ins.

I tried to find Tundra Jack with out track, and outside of waiting at the tower with Sara there's really good way to do it.

I know I'm 14 years late on this one lol.

I bought a Langseax (the one hander) from another player who had upgraded a long time ago and it was a decent weapon at the time for a lowbie. It's probably one of the first MAGIC weapons that was obtainable back then. The Morins short sword that the rangers quested for was 6/22 so this is about comparable to that one and fortunately it's not BARB only so any warrior with enough faction to do the quest can get it.

And there are still long time players out there that do not twink at all... I ran accross this quest a couple of years ago and thought it was fun. The sword is very good in my opinion, If you get a group to help on the quest and beheading, you can get this sword at around level 15 (I did). And my barbarian warrior still used it at level 35. It is a very nice weapon. You will have to have good faction with the Wolves of the North if you are not a barbarian, though. T'Finn, of course has helped many a warrior on Saryn get the blade.
what are stats?

magic weapons just laying about. Most people don't and can't even kill wisp or scarecrows. This is not a bad weapon for most players who only have what they can get. You tweakers should just leave the rest of be and have our quest. I sure wish I could carry my epic weapon around as a lvl 3 but, alas, I can't. I guess I'll just wait until lvl 49 or so.

name a better 1hs that can be got so easily around that level for free, then... if you're an ub3rl33t tw1nk3r then yeah, its not a great sword, but first time players did, and still do exist - for them its very good, decent damage, nice delay, good weapon till the low 30s..
Bah!

Most of the time you finish this quest you get the Langseax not the Langseax of the Wolves. I can't tell you how many people I see selling the Langseax cheap just to get rid of it. I bought one for 15PP myself. Not worth questing for an item that cheap on the slim chance that you might get the better one. Besides, nearly anyone can scrape together 15PP to buy it at a low level, so why wait until 20+ and form a group to do this silly quest. Besides, do you know how many people jump on Paglan or Basil when they pop? Unless you have someone staking out the spawn point and engaging him as soon as he pops, of course. By the time you follow Frostbite there, someone else might already have him, and if you interfere then YOU are the one who will be KS'ing.
Faction correction (FV server at least)

The quest description claimes that you lose faction with Rogues of the White Rose for both the completion of the Lion Meat quest (which is where you get the Lion Meat to give to Iceberg) and for giving the meat to Icerberg to get the Sweaty Shirt, however, Meynardjames, a 13th Level Bard on the FV server, just completed both those steps of the Langseax quest and recieved no negative faction hits whatsoever. Faction with Shamans of Justice, Wolves of the North, Merchants of Halas and Steel Warriors all went up, but no negative faction was generated with Rogues of the White Rose.
I have no idea if this would be the case on any other server, but I have no reason to believe that it would not.
Just wanted to let you all know. Happy questing :)
RE: Faction correction (FV server at least)
# Jan 30 2002 at 5:01 AM Rating: Decent
I believe the desciption we have up here is simply old. This isn't the only quest in Halas that used to drop White Rose faction. What got a lot of people KoS to the banker was the Gnoll Teeth. The negative faction hits have been removed, thankfully. Barbarian rogues have to be one of the toughest groups to raise one's faction with (from my experience, anyway. The nearby Bloodsabres are also quite picky).

Always remember folks... it's good to have nice fac with barbarian merchants... those fishing villages are all over the place!

I am helping some guild members complete this quest hopefully for a LOW, and 2 of the members in our group are mages. Will Paglan or Basil resist their spells? If so, it is going to be much more difficult for us to get them! If anyone knows and can post an answer I would appreciate it! Thanks!

The murderer is only spawned when the shirt is handed to Frostbite to track - but yes, if you want to be an ***, you can certainly steal someone else's triggered Basil or Paglan.
RE: short cut??
# Oct 12 2001 at 11:35 PM Rating: Default
Agreed, Basil is often up while no one is doing the quest, and I've even seen Paglan once. My guess is you need fairly high amiable faction to turn in the heads -- that's where my faction is now.
RE: short cut??
# Sep 17 2001 at 7:22 AM Rating: Decent
Not everyone who turn in the shirt can and will kill the outlaws. The quest up to turning in the shirt can easily be done at level 5, it is just running back and forth, and if you combine a few quest, it makes ok money and some exp. I know I did the first part of the quest way before I could finish it.

So if you see Basil or Paglan up, just shout if anyone is doing the quest, and if not, you can kill the mob and take the shortcut.

I've done this quest several times now, and got both swords two. Has anyone noticed that the faction hits here are wrong? When handing in the heads I lose faction with the merchants of Halas, and with the Shamansofjustice. You can get them back up by doing other quests, but I'd hate to be KOS to a vendor :)
