This task is part of the "Crystal Circle Builders" achievement.
You must have at least kindly faction with "Crystal Circle Builders" in order to request the task (see this quest entry for details about raising faction).
Magus Burlshin say 'Ah it's you _____. You've done more than enough for us. We couldn't possibly ask you to gather any more crystals or do any other [tasks]. Besides, we've become a bit worried about the [effect] they have on people. And not just people, but all living things.'
You say, 'What tasks?'
Magus Burlshin says 'We understand that these shards are related in some way to the power of Fear, and it's clear that long contact with something like that will have an effect on people. But there is something more going on here. Shards found in the, well, older portions of Norrath have reacted differently than those found in the new locations we've recently discovered, like this one we call Shard's Landing. We'd be grateful if you could [help us] understand what this difference is.'
You say, 'Help us?'
Magus Burlshin says 'Of course I've used up every scrap of crystal I've been given. Besides, we'll need crystal from specific places to test what we're looking at. Here is a simple testing kit... well, simple for you, extremely challenging for me to make for you. I'll need you to head into the heart of the strange places discovered since the Fear Fall. Use the testing kit to ensure that you have a shard with enough of the oddity we seek, then bundle them in the kit and bring them back. We'll talk when you return.'
You have been assigned the task 'Shard Experiences'.
Magus Burlshin would like you to explore the magical essences of the crystals that have fallen from the sky. To do that, he has built a device that analyzes the magical power of objects. All you need to do is get these objects in close proximity of the analyzer. It will do the rest.
Explore the crevasse where the enormous crystal is lodged 0/1 (Shards Landing)
Task Window Says: First, Burlshin would like you to explore the crevasse that seems to be where the power of Fear left the Sepulcher of Order. This may require a leap of faith.
Allow yourself to fall into the crevasse in the middle of the Shard's Landing crater.

Test the air in the area where the Alaran Triumvirate died 0/1 (Sepulcher of Order)
Task Window Says: Burlshin suggested that the best place to start would be where the crystals may have been created. Seek out the place where the Triumvirate died and test the air to see if measurable traces of magic remain.
The analyzer hums and you feel air moving around the box. After a moment the box starts to get very warm. A moment later the humming stops and the temperature of the box drops to normal.
Test a fear shard from near the hole in Shard's Landing 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Find a crystal that remains near the potential creation point. Burlshin knows there are some lying about near the large crystal in Shard's Landing.
Fear shards are ground spawns around the hole in the middle of the Shard's Landing crater.
The crystal radiates with life but nothing happens when you draw near it.
The box does nothing at all.
The device lets out a terrible, screeching howl. The tiny crystal shard in your hand shivers and shatters in to pieces too numerous to count. The tiny cloud of fear dust is sucked into the analyzer. The screeching continues for several more seconds before finally, mercifully, going silent.
Use the analyzer on the huge crystal in Shard's Landing 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Certainly the large crystal itself will tell us something about the magics we are encountering. Test it.
Head to the crystal in the middle of the crater and right-click the analyzer.
Magical energy spikes out of the analyzer, striking the huge crystal. The energy disipates the moment it strikes, leaving the distinct flavor of carrots in the air.
Analyze one of the crystal shards found in the newly revealed locations 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Now you need to test shards that have fallen into the newly discovered areas. There is a tendency for the locals to pick them up, so you may have to liberate one.
Get hold of another "Small Glowing Fear Shard" and right-click the analyzer.
The tiny crystal is pulled from your hand, slamming against the box of the analyzer. As you watch, the crystal appears to dissolve into the material of the box. After just a moment, it is gone. The box vibrates slightly and makes a sound much like a large cat purring.
Speak with Magus Burlshin about other crystals to analyze 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Return the the Magus to see where he wishes you to go next.
You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'
Magus Burlshin says 'A, yes. Welcome back.' The magus reaches out and lightly touches the analyzer. It seems to shiver a little. 'You are doing very well. I am now convinced that the Alarans or one of their gods are having some sort of influence on the crystals you have examined. I think we could benefit from a careful analysis of a crystal that has not been anywhere near an Alaran. I have a few of them left from other experiments. Take this one for the analyzer.'
Magus Burlshin hands you a "Tiny Pale Fear Shard".
Analyze one of the crystal shards found in older locations 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: The shards that have fallen into locations far from Shard's Landing may prove to be different in nature. Test one of those.
For a brief moment both the analyzer and the crystal you are holding fade out of existence. Only the box returns.
Analyze objects until you can find something that matches the magic the analyzer is now tuned to 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Now that the analyzer has mapped out the essences, you need to find a magical power that matches ones that it cannot categorize. Burlshin expects that you may find it in the bodies of Alarans.
Go to the Underground City in Shard's Landing and kill Alarans until you loot a Chunk of Alaran Flesh. With this item on your cursor, right-click the analyzer.
The bloody hunk of flesh dries up as the analyzer intakes all of its moisture. The flesh turns to dust.
Deliver 1 Magical Analyzer to Magus Burlshin 0/1 (Shard's Landing)
Task Window Says: Return the device to its creator so he can examine what you have learned.

Your faction standing with Crystal Circle Builders got better.
Well, you've certainly been busy. The device has absorbed the magical signatures of the things you have found for it. It seems that there is a slight difference in the sort of magic in those crystals found closer to the Alaran areas than those found further away. It is clear from the results that those found far from Alaris are much more pure, as if they no longer held any essence of any Alaran power that might have remained from the Triumvirate.
The Alaran gods are very different from ours, as is their magic. The device separated at least four types of magic from various samples. Of course in all of them there is a great amount of the power of Fear. And in the crystals found near the Sepulcher and in the air sample you took there, there is a trace of the Triumvirate. These are both powers that I can identify from other items. But there are two sources of magic that I don't recognize.
One is strongest in the areas that we have recently discovered, in both crystals and the Alarans here. It defies identification in a way that I can't understand. It's as if the magic itself is hard to pin down. I know it's there, but I can't identify its nature. The final type of magic we found is in all the crystals. It's completely foreign. The only way I can describe it is as some sort of ethereal magical presence. These are mysteries that we hope to one day understand.
