Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This is a group mission that begins with Ain Kavus (map) at location 1185, 265, 0 (the zone-in area).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed "Rise of the Swinetor"
- Completed "Dirty Tactics"
- Completed "Double Trouble
- Completed "Halt of Decay"
- Completed "Raw Aggression"
- Completed "The Art of War"

You say, 'Hail, Ain Kavus'

Ain Kavus says '_____, Reena has told me all that you have done to prepare our forces for the attack on the Chateau of Filth. Now I must call upon you again, gather together a small [strike force] and we shall begin our assault!'

You say, 'I have a strike force'

Ain Kavus says 'Let me know when you are [ready] to depart.'

You have been assigned the task 'The Machinations of Kotul'.

Ain has asked you to help defeat the forces of Queen Grelleth. Their defense within the palace have prevented us from mounting a full-scale offensive, and your task is to infiltrate with a smaller force to disrupt them.

You say, 'Ready!'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Grelleth's Palace, the Machinations of Kotul.

Consult with Ain Kavus before entering the palace 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

NOTE: The task locks upon this hail.

You say, 'Hail, Ain Kavus'

Ain Kavus says 'This will not be an easy task. I have sent troops to find alternate ways into this palace. I cannot guess how long it will take, but I'm certain that they will arrive. Work in concert with them or it is unlikely that you will survive. Now move forward quickly, I have unlocked the door before us, but I cannot promise that it will remain unlocked for long.'

Defeat the Swinetor defenses 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Defeat Turo 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Task Window Says: The main difficulty your smaller force will probably encounter will be the main force guarding the foyer. Ain will be sending you help, so make the best use of it.

Enter the foyer and aggro the two scouts there:

a scout says 'Intruder! Intruder! Intruder!'

a scout says 'Intruder! Intruder! Intruder!'

a scout shouts 'Oink!'

a scout shouts 'By the smell in my snout! Run!'

a bandit shouts 'You idiot! Your butt won't fit behind that! Hide someplace better.'

a bandit shouts 'You're the idiot! Stop shouting when we're trying to ambush the bad guys!'

Soon after this, several Alarans join you to help:

a soldier shouts 'Finally we have won through! Now to destroy the enemy!'

a wind warrior shouts 'I have never before smelled such a stench! Dying for a cause is better than being forced to crawl through those rotted crevasses again!'

The Alarans will attack the Swinetor around the room, including the flingers on the balcony, who will hitting random players with the spell "Rotten Fleshbomb" until they are killed:

Rotten Fleshbomb: Targeted AE 30', Prismatic (-700)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 5500

The Alarans will kill the flingers while you focus on the bandits and brutes down below. Once the flingers are dead, Turo appears on the balcony and blinds everyone in the zone:

a soldier shouts 'We have defeated these scum up here! We shall forge ahead and begin dealing with the rest!'

Turo shouts 'Aha! Time to clean up a bit of this mess!'

a soldier shouts 'What is this? Darkness? Darkness is the tool of cowards!'

Turo shouts 'Now for you, whatever you are! My magic isn't going to be able to kill you like it does those skinny rats, but it should be good enough!'

You are completely disoriented!

Billowing Smog: Targeted AE 300', Unresistable (0)
1: Blindness (1)
2: Shadowstep

This causes all remaining Swinetor mobs to aggro you (plus 3-4 additional Swinetor that spawn in the adjacent hallway and charge you). These mobs are all mezzable.

For a short time, Turo does "Knife Toss" at random:

Knife Toss: Directional 0', Chromatic (-500)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 13000
2: Stun (2.00 sec)

Not long after, you will see this emote and Turo will leave the scene (you don't actually kill him), updating the "Defeat Turo" step:

Turo shouts 'Hrm... I've run out of knives. I'm certainly not coming down there to dirty my hands with your blood. Besides, I have siblings and servants to do that for me. Get 'em boys! Goodbye, fools!'

Kill all remaining Swinetor to update the "defenses" step.

Pick up the scroll that Turo dropped when he left 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Pick up "A Tear-Stained Note", left on the ground in Turo's place. It reads:

You rely too much on others to do your dirty work for you. You need to understand that their failure is your failure. I left our front line defenses to you, and you have proven weak and cowardly. I know how much you are frightened by almost anything, and it is embarrassing to me. Your example to your siblings and my people is intolerable. You have much to prove, child. Don't return to me until you have made up for your failures.

Defeat the twins Lelro and Lelri 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Task Window Says: Ain warned you that the twins Lelri and Lelro are masters with beasts. Their interference with supply lines and reinforcements needs to be reduced.

Head upstairs into the dining room where you'll find several rats. Kill the rats to spawn Lelri and Lelro in the south end of the room (they are not auto-aggro).

Lelri and Lelro each hit for a max ~9,000. They must be kept balanced within 20% health of each other, and separated 50'+ range from each other. If they fall out of balance, the lower one will heal. If they get too close in range, they set off a large AE (double cast):

Twinstrike: PB AE 800', (-10000)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 22154 to 27692 (random)

In addition to the balance and distance, they spawn two oashim adds at 75% and 50% health (adds are mezzable; hit for a max ~7,500).

Once they get lower in health, they go non-aggro and leave the room:

Lelri shouts 'Enough of this, brother. I don't want to play with these things anymore. I'm going to see how mother is doing.'

Lelro shouts 'Okay, brother. Let's get out of here.'

Pick up the scroll that fell from one of the twins when they turned into rats 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Pick up "An Unfinished Note", left on the ground in place of one of the twins. It reads:

It was all Turo's fault, mother! They poisoned our pets. They could never beat them without some sort of trickery! And you know that Turo is good with poison and stuff like that. Lelro says that our beasts are the best! As soon as the bad people are gone from our house we will have new and stronger beasts for you!

Defeat Wuran 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Task Window Says: Wuran, according to Ain, is either a complete idiot, or a powerful necromancer. Stories vary wildly. You need to find him and push him back into the palace.

This encounter takes place in the room opposite the dining room. Kill the five tortured skeletons in the room to make Wuran active. He casts "Wilting Touch":

Wilting Touch: Targeted AE 0', Poison (-750)
1: Decrease HP when cast by 15000
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 710 per tick
3: Decrease Movement by 50%
4: Decrease Attack Speed by 50%
5: Increase Poison Counter by 13

He spawns an add ("an enslaved ghost") at 50% health. Kill the add and take Wuran to 35% health for the update.

Zurel shouts 'Stop fooling around, brother. We have no more time for this. mother wishes us to complete Kotul's plan.'

Wuran shouts 'Really? But his plan is so... technical. I'd rather stay here and play more!'

Zurel shouts 'Mother said that she would like to see you, Wuran. She says she misses you very much. Let me clear out these pests and take you to her.'

At this time, everyone is hit with "Commanding Bellow" (nuke for 4,000 + feign death).

Zurel shouts 'Come, brother.'

Wuran shouts 'Goodie! Mom will be pleased to know that I made a ghost! A ghost!'

Pick up the scroll that Wuran was reading when you entered 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

"A Crisp Note" is a ground spawn. It reads:

Brother, we need you to rebuild your wards. There is no time to waste. Please stop playing with your foolish undead and get our defenses restored. I will be sending our sister to encourage you to do so if I do not see any progress very soon.

Locate Kotul and see if you can learn anything from him 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Task Window Says: Kotul may be the most dangerous of Grelleth's children, if only for his intellect. Ain warns you that an encounter with him may be more than you can handle, but that any efforts you make against him would be helpful.

Note: Hailing him triggers a named spawn.

You say, 'Hail, Kotul'

Kotul says 'Really? You have been annoying me for this long and you have the audacity to just walk up to me and hail me as if I was some peasant? Well, you would know from peasantry, wouldn't you. I will not deal with you pests myself, I have more to deal with. I do have an idea, though. I shall use you to test one of my newest experiments. Goodbye, fools.'

Defeat the Necromantic Experiment 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

This is an ooze that needs to be killed. Every 80 seconds, a random player gets an emote indicating that they are 10 seconds away from becoming very high on the ooze's hate list. If, after this happens, the ooze gets on top of the player, it leeches itself to the player with a DOT+snare+slow ("Necromantic Drain") and self-buffs with +AC/regen ("Necromantic Boost"):

Necromantic Drain: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Inhibit Melee Attacks by (75%)
2: Decrease ATK by 550
3: Decrease Movement by 80%
4: Unknown #343 (100/75/0)
5: Decrease Hitpoints by 4000 per tick

Necromantic Boost: Self 0', Unresistable (0)
1: Increase AC by 210
2: Increase Hitpoints by 1000 per tick
3: Mitigate Spell Damage by 40%, 1000000 total
4: Mitigate Melee Damage by 40%, 1000000 total

In the room are several pools. Each pool has an aura in it (damage debuff for players). However, if the ooze is pushed or positioned in one of these pools, that pool loses its aura and any players affected by the above emote will become unattached.

Kill the ooze to update this step.

The Necromantic Experiment has been slain by _____!

Pick up the scrap of paper that fell from Kotul's robe when he left 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

Pick up "A Single Diary Page", which reads:

If only my siblings were competent. Zurel, at least, is good at what she does, and what she does is extremely useful to me. The others... I can make use of them, but they are not what I really need. Their failure is making mother angry. She takes that anger out of me simply because I'm the only one smart enough to organize this mess. I can't tell her this, but our enemies are stronger than I had expected. I shall have to find a better way to defeat them. If I can only convince mother to lend a little of her newfound power to her children, we should have little problem with the intruders.

Return to Ain with what you have learned 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

You say, 'Hail, Ain Kavus'

Ain Kavus says 'Thank you for your assistance. While you did not destroy the children of filth, you drove them back. This should allow us to get a larger force inside for a deeper strike.'

Open the chest that Ain left for you 0/1 (Grelleth's Palace)

All the side achievements for The Machinations of Kotul mission are not granted until the very end after you open the chest.

Blow Your House Down - kill all the swines in the foyer with Turo, including a couple of side rooms to the west, and maybe the flingers up on the walkway too (t\he Alaran will help with those).

I'm a Pool For You - don't drag the Necromantic Experiment into any pools.

Toughness - don't die.
