Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

Note: This is the group mission for "The Madness of King Tormax". For the raid, see this quest entry.

This is a group mission that begins with Noble Helssen (map) in Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness. He is located en route to the throne room of Kael Drakkel (southern part of the zone).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed "Deliver Us Unto Evil"
- Completed "Them Bones"
- Completed "A Cure for Madness"
- Completed "Traitors Among Us" (mission)
- Must have positive faction with Dragon Death Keep (kill frost giants and/or apparitions to increase it)

You say, 'Hail, Noble Helssen'

Noble Helssen says '_____, you have done well removing the tainted [weapons] from the city and defeating the Iceshards, but now the King's life is in danger. He is under the influence of the crystal, and if he cannot be saved, then Kael will be enveloped in his madness. If you can muster a [large] force, we can divest the King of the crystal's power. If you can only field a [small] group, still we must try!'

You say, 'I have a small group'

Noble Helssen says 'Good. Outside the temple the King still strides about, raving and waving his accursed axe, bellowing epithets at his visions of Dain Frostreaver IV and Lord Yelinak. We must [confront] him now.'

You have been assigned the task 'The Madness of King Tormax'.

The giants of Kael require your help to destroy the fear shard that is luring King Tormax into madness.

You say, 'Let's confront him'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Kael Drakkel Mission.

Speak with Noble Helssen 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

You say, 'Hail, Noble Helssen'

Noble Helssen says 'We have failed to wake King Tormax from his trance of rage. Every second he grows more agitated, such that we cannot approach him. He defends the crystal, brandishing his axe at anyone who dares glance at the malevolent thing. We have no choice: We must [destroy] the crystal! If you have not the heart to face such trials, [leave] now!'

You say, 'Destroy?'

Noble Helssen says 'Whatever the King may do, or whatever strange apparitions may confront us, we must destroy the crystal. We will fight the King if there is no other option, but we cannot let him fall in battle. Are you [ready]?'

You say, 'Ready!'

Noble Helssen says 'Go, adventurers, free the King from his madness!'

King Tormax attacks. He hits for a max ~11,000; does not summon; casts "Banishment of Fears" every 30 seconds; and casts "Axe Swipe" every 40 seconds:

Banishment of Fears: PB AE 100', Magic (-940)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 25000

Axe Swipe: Directional 100', Magic (-940)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 35000

Tormax can be rooted off to the side while you DPS the crystal and progress the task.

Damage the fear shard controlling King Tormax 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

DPS the fear shard to 75%. This triggers the spawn of three Coldain mobs that attack.

Defeat coldain figments 0/3 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

These hit for a max ~10,800 and are stunnable, rootable, and snareable. They do not cast any spells.

NOTE: While the figments are alive, the crystal has a very small aura around it that pushes you away if you get too close:

Crystal Gravitation: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Slow Push (400)

(This is also in effect while Dain and Yelinak are up later in the task.)

Damage the fear shard controlling King Tormax 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

DPS the fear shard to 50% to spawn Dain Frostreaver IV, who attacks.

Dain Frostreaver IV's form takes shape, wielding a heavy, armor-breaking axe.

Defeat Dain Frostreaver IV 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

He hits for a max ~14,800 and casts "Dain's Skull Cracker" every 30 seconds throughout the fight:

Dain's Skull Cracker: Single Target, Magic (-950)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 32000
2: Stun (1.00 sec)

A ways into the fight (50%?), he adds "Armored Roll" to his arsenal (cast every 25 seconds):

Armored Roll: PB AE 70', Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 40000

Damage the fear shard controlling King Tormax 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

DPS the fear shard to 25% to spawn Lord Yelinak, who attacks.

Lord Yelinak is manifested from King Tormax's fears!

Defeat Lord Yelinak 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

NOTE: The task locks upon Yelinak's death.

Lord Yelinak hits for a max ~16,000 and casts "Tail Thunder" (rear AE), "Chilling Breath" (frontal AE), and "Wing Gust" (PBAE). Each of these is preceded by an emote 10 seconds in advance of its cast:

Tail Thunder

Warning: Lord Yelinak's tail starts to twitch.
Seen as it's cast: Lord Yelinak thunders his tail against the ground.

Tail Thunder: Directional 70', Magic (-950)

Seen as it's cast: Lord Yelinak churns the air with his wings.

Wing Gust: PB AE 100', Cold (-950)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 20000

Destroy the fear shard controlling King Tormax 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

Destroy the fear shard.

a crystal of fear has been slain by _____!

Speak to King Tormax 0/1 (Kael Drakkel: The King's Madness)

You say, 'Hail, King Tormax'

King Tormax looks at the temple grounds. His retainers watch his face and keep their hands upon their weapons. Slowly the King's faculties return. 'Against whom have I fought? Blood seeps from wounds I knew not that I had, and my hand is numb as though I have wielded steel against steel.'

Noble Helssen shouts 'Forgive us your wounds, my King, for your mind was not your own. The brothers of Iceshard wielded a crystal of immense power against you -- against all the citizens of Kael. The brothers now lie in their own blood. May their memory be purged from our minds and records. But though we cut them down, we could not sever the crystal's hold upon you without force.'

Yetarr shouts 'My King, you should retire to the Keep. Allow your wounds and your mind to mend.'

King Tormax raises his hand and silences his retainer. 'My mind has remained long enough in idleness. Searching my memory is like peering through a thick fog: I see only flashes of steel and the faces of Dain Frostreaver and Lord Yelinak peering at me, mocking me. What has become of the city in my absence?

Noble Helssen shouts 'There is much to recount. Many of our people are dead, and it shall be no easy task repairing the trust between the kromrif and kromzek. With your return, though, there is hope the city will not fall to fear and civil war. At your command, my King, we shall enter the Keep and begin immediately to repair the destruction wrought by the Iceshards.'

King Tormax looks to Noble Helssen and creases his brow. 'Your words sting more than your steel. My wounds do not compare to those inflicted upon Kael Drakkel. We shall return to the Keep, but I shall take no aid until I have given it to the city.'

Noble Helssen shouts 'As you command, so shall it be done!' Addressing the adventurers before him, Noble Helssen continues, 'Adventurers, you have proven your worth. You have saved King Tormax and the entire city. I hold you as warriors of great strength and honored friends of Kael Drakkel. When you [leave] here, do so knowing that we are indebted to you.'

If you zerg the crystal after Dain Frostreaver with full burn buffs then the script locks. It happened that the crystal was instantly pulverized and Yelinak didn't spawned on us. So be careful with your DPS at 105...

Can 2 Box this.
# Apr 01 2014 at 4:51 AM Rating: Decent
When I first read this mission I assumed that it would not be able to be 2-boxxed but after reading it again recently I decided to give this a try anyway.

Took me two tries but finally brought it down with a 100 mage and 100 druid and 2 cleric mercs (don't need a tank merc and don't trust a DPS merc). The reason why it took me TWO tries is because the misleading information on here about King Tormax. Tormax DOES in fact summon but does NOT summon from 100%. I believe it was 97% when he started summoning. Anyway I had gotten about 25-30 minutes in and was about to pop Yelinak when I noticed my healer merc creeping up on the threat meter on Tormax. So I decided to hit him with a quick nuke to keep aggro which brought him to 97% and he started summoning me. I tried running out of his summons for a good 2 minutes and he just would not seem to regen back up so I had to die and restart because Yelinak ended up coming while I was trying to get Tormax to regen.

Also did not see mentioned on here that the crystal is a BELLY caster but does not attack you back.

Figured I would post some tips for this since not many people have posted here.

Tormax

-If he goes too far away from the crystal he'll restart back on top of the crystal but keeps his HP the same and aggro does not reset (he always ran for my druid after being leashed so that's why I'm assuming his aggro list remains the same after being leashed). I used AA root to lock him down near the edge of this range and refreshed the root when it was about to fade.

-Only the person rooting him should ever touch Tormax. No one else should touch him so they don't have a chance of gaining threat on him AND you get the added bonus of being able to get out-of-combat regen during the crystal phases when no other mobs are up. Healer might have to suck it up and heal the designated rooter and thus would be on the aggro list but all others should stay clear, if you accidentally get on his aggro list then using some sort of fade would be the smart thing to do.

3 Coldain
- Seem to auto-aggro on whoever did the hail to start the event. Can easily be kited or CC'd in whatever fastion and are really just like standard trash and spawn behind the crystal.

Dain Frostreaver
- Spawns way behind the crystal (where Kallis stormcaller would be in regular kael), and did not seem to auto-aggro. Might aggro after a certain amount of time has elapsed but I didn't wait long enough to find out.

Yelinak
- He is HUGE and is the same size as the normal Yelinak dragon. Auto-aggros and spawns in the middle in front of the crystal (in between the 4 non-aggro giants basically).

Random tips
- It's a long event so try to conserve your mana by not unloading on the crystal in-between phases. You can take your time here and med up while dpsing the crystal down slowly if need be.
- Before popping yelinak, run your casters far away from the middle of the arena (on the opposite side of where tormax is rooted). I mean almost to the ramp because his melee range is gigantic and he can easily kill your caster before a tank can get him settled down on him.

That last one almost got me, thought I had my druid far enough away but couldn't get mage pet on the dragon before he shredded my druid. Ended up pulling yelinak towards the edge of tormax's leash range so could keep pet alive while Tormax kept resetting himself since both my mage and her merc were too far away from the crystal for him to get to them. All while this was happening I was running my druid back down to kael to get back into the instance.

Theoretically it might work to do this without a rooter class by having one person get aggro on tormax and then sit outside his leash range so he would continually keep running to them and then get leashed back. However would have to be really careful about everyone else not doing AoEs so they wouldn't accidentally get on tormax's aggro list.

All in all took me about 45 mins and if I decide to do this again next time would probably take 30 minutes or less now that I know what to do.

If you kill King Tormax instead of rooting him, you'll get the achievement "Winners Are Losers", but it also ends your mission and you have to get a new one.
