This quest begins with an Erudite named Magus Burlshin. He is found at the crystal druid ring a short distance from the zone-in in the southeastern valley.

Prior to the release of Rain of Fear, he was located in Erillion, City of Bronze, and had this to say (no further responses):

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

Magus Burlshin says 'Hail, stranger. You look like an adventurer, and I have use for adventurers. I imagine that you noticed all of the [crystals] falling from the sky, how could you not. Well, we Magus... Magi, are certain that they will be of some use. They hold a bit of power, even the smallest of them. Not enough to do anything on their own. We're hoping to gather enough of them to do... something with them. I'll take any you can gather up. Though I'm not sure we can offer any sort of reward for you now, we'll certainly remember your kindness.'

He is now found in Shard's Landing and says:

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

Magus Burlshin says 'Hail, Stranger. You look like an adventurer, and I have use for adventures. I imagine that you noticed all of the [crystals] falling from the sky a while back, how could you not. Well, we Magus... Magi, have come up with a use for them. They hold a bit of power, even the smallest of them. We used them to build the mystic circle you see here. Those with the proper magical skills can use it to travel between the other magical teleportation anchors around Norrath.'

    You say, 'What crystals?'

Magus Burlshin says 'We've taken to calling them Fear Shards. We've learned that they have some relationship with the death of Cazic-Thule and whatever that strange god-being tried to do with his power. There's a lot of panic about trying to recover all of these shards in some attempt to restore the god of Fear, which has been a bit of a challenge for us here. Despite that, we could certainly use more of these Fear Shards. Would you gather them for me? Just bring me any you find, but make sure they are appropriate for you to handle.'

He accepts turn-ins of the following items:

Small Fear Shard (Rec. 100; Req. 91)
Petite Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 95; Req. 81)
Petite Fear Shard (Rec. 85; Req. 71)
Petite Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 75; Req. 61)
Meager Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 65; Req. 51)
Meager Fear Shard (Rec. 55; Req. 41)
Meager Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 45; Req. 31)
Tiny Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 35; Req. 21)
Tiny Fear Shard (Rec. 25; Req. 11)
Tiny Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 15)

These are reported as rare drops from any mob within the level range of the item.

You can only hand in a shard if you are within the shard's specified recommended/required level range. If you try handing in a lower level shard, it will be returned to you with a suggestion that you trade it for one of your own level (with a player).

Upon turning in a shard, you receive a positive faction boost with "Crystal Circle Builders".

    0 turn-ins: Indifferent
    2 turn-ins: Amiable
    10 turn-ins: Kindly
    15 turn-ins: Warmly
    22 turn-ins: Ally
    41 turn-ins: Maximum Ally

Upon a single turn-in, you see:

Magus Burlshin says 'Thank you very much! This will be very handy.'

    Rewards & Achievement

Once you reach "kindly" faction, you can request the task "Shard Experiences".

There is an aug reward for the completion of the achievement "Crystal Circle Builder" (see this quest entry for the achievement). As part of this achievement, you need to reach maximum ally.

    November Announcement

On November 21, 2012, this announcement was made on EQLive, indicating that the quest will still be available after Rain of Fear's launch and that the shards in question would drop more commonly (particularly in new zones). We also got a preview of the rewards.

Crystalline Shards of Fear having been raining down on Norrath for some time now, and people and creatures the world over have begun to gather them. Items of exceeding rarity, these shards are highly valued by the Adventurers of Norrath as a way to earn a better reputation with Magus Burlshin.

Magus Burlshin is seeking to complete a grand building project, for the betterment of all Norrathians, and Shards of Fear are critical to his plans. Those who have achieved sufficient faction with him will garner a much more concrete reward, however! A large amount of faction will earn a charm of fearsome power, and those whose reputations have reached the pinnacle of possibility will receive their choice of items: one of three augments of exceeding rarity or a ring that provides travel to Shard's Landing every two hours. Only one reward may be earned, though, so choose wisely!

Magus Burlshin expects these shards to appear more frequently once Rain of Fear begins and, not only that, but he notes adventurers will most likely see them more in the areas most affected or corrupted by the shards, areas within Rain of Fear itself.

    Good luck in your hunting!

Got 4 of these off one griffon in Blightfire Moors. I pulled a train with my 95 warrior then with a level 10 bard dmg'd each one then popped druid DSs on the warrior.

After that I shrouded to level 30 and got teleported to him with my druids being bound there. Handed in the 4 shards and went from indifferent to amiable.
why did they make it so hard for low level toons to reach?

So the shards drop for all levels. However, you can't reach the quest guy if you are a low level without getting killed. hardly makes any sense. why put him in such a remote location if they shards drop for a level 20? sometimes i think soe doesn't think anything through.

There are no see-invis mobs on the route to Magus Burlshin. Any level toon can buy a couple invis potions in the bazaar and make the run (Argath -> Valley -> RT -> CoB) without any problems.

i hate seeing people post that they got something in a certain zone but being too dumb or selfish or whatever to post who dropped it. if you can't be more useful than that, why bother?

So far they are global outside of instances. If it isn't an instance, then EVERYTHING drops them lol. They will not drop in instances though according to reports I've gathered. They also seem to have the Trivial Loot Code on, meaning only dropping for you if the mob cons light blue or higher (to whatever level you happen to be), dunno if it affects the killer or looter though. Think it's the looter.

    Level Cap for Shards
    # Oct 20 2012 at 1:56 PM Rating: Decent
There seems to be a level cap for Shards.

    I am a level 95 Ranger.

I went to hand my collection in, but I found that I could only hand in the Petite Dark Fear Shards which are 81 - 95, but I could not hand in the Petite Fear Shards which are 81 to 85.

Or maybe this is just a bug... any one else have this problem?

Read my post below. It's intended. That's why they have a rec/req on the shards. Can only hand them in if you either

    A. Are between that gap
    B. Shroud down to between that gap (can only do this 1-70 as shrouds stop at 70)
    C. Delevel to between that gap.

Here's a copy of the info I collected when I did this on Test (first person to hit max Ally) and subsequently posted to the EQ forums. Nothing has changed since I did this according to both reports from Live players as well as me double checking. I tacked on a couple bold notes to the info.

    Quote:
Ok final pre-release update with compiled all current info. I hit max ally just now.

    1. Hand in guy is Magus Burlshin located here:
    http://i.imgur.com/ddqHt.jpg
    2. Shards appear to be global drops. They each have a level range. (81-95 for example) and will drop off mobs within that range.
    3. Shards are gut wrenchingly rare. Expect to swarm a place for hours with none.
    4. When they do drop you will usually see 2+ on corpse at once.
    5. The shards are stackable
    6. The shards are tradeable
    7. The shards are not lore
    8. Handing in the shards raises faction with a faction called "Crystal Circle Builders". The hits seem rather large.
    9. Everyone starts indifferent with this faction.
    10. Out of curiosity I checked, none of the new npcs in Jaggedpine share this faction.
    11. You can only hand in a shard if you are within that level range. Otherwise he hands it back to you and suggests you trade it for one of your level. Seemingly hinting at exchange between players as he does not appear to offer such a service himself. -He does not offer this service. This IS a hint at player trading of the shards.
    12. Shrouding permits you to hand in a shard so long as you shroud to within that level (remember shrouds stop at 70. If 95 you'll be SoL with any 71-85 level gap shards unless you delevel then rez...which I did. I went from 95 to 85 with ~100 deaths bind camping a selyrah near Magus, handed in 7 shards, then hit Expediant Recovery.)
    13. Magus is a merchant
    14. No matter your faction level his merchant window is empty.
    15. He is trackable.
    16. He is not invis, invis 2, or in anyway hidden
    17. He will not respond to the prompt [crystals] at any faction level with any phrase or variant. I even tried a few typos on the word to see if his response trigger was typoed. Nothing.
    18. There is no achievement.
    19. There is not physical task. It's a faction grind
    20. There is no reward upon hand-in minus faction and a thank you.
    21. Judging by his hail dialogue it would appear rewards are added in later, perhaps a different phase of the pre-release. Or the faction itself may be the reward, a head start on RoF progression. Who knows.
    22. It took approximately 18-19 shards to max faction. doesn't seem like much but when you factor in the rarity... -Correction. I recounted after a friend maxed. I missed a couple. He maxed Ally in 21 shards. So 21 shards = max Ally per person.

Basically given the lack of reward, don't rush or try drastic measures like I did, just kill and xp and let it come naturally, it seems you have plenty of time and getting there fast nets you nothing as of yet.

All of this was true at the time of this post, however as EQ is ever changing Sony may deem to change or bug fix any of this at any time so take it with a grain of salt. i'm putting it here both so that people interested know approximately how the pre-quest functions so far and also so if anything I listed here, that I came across during my run of the current phase (assuming it progresses) of the pre-quest, is not how Sony intended it to work then they will know it's bugged and can fix it (as is the role of people on Test server :P)

    Happy adventuring!
