In Summer 2012, a few new NPCs and objects appeared in the northeast part of the Jaggedpine Forest (around location 1500, -1700).

Early Stages

If you hail Arben Leafsway while he's at the stone pillar:

Arben Leafsway wipes the sweat from his brow and looks up at you and smiles, 'Good day, _____. While it's not much to look at yet, you are standing on the site that will someday be Norrath's latest druidic monument. It will take a lot of material to construct this sacred relic, but I have full faith in the help of passing adventurers. If you happen to come across any rare stones, dolerite or the like, feel free to set them on the pillars and I'll get around to shaping them into form.'

If you hail him while he's at the campfire:

Arben Leafsway warms his hands by the fire and looks toward you, 'Greetings _____. I hope all is well with you. Me? I'm setting out to build a perfect replica of the great monuments that our people use for transport. If you happen to come across any rare stones, dolerite or the like, feel free to leave them by the pillars over there.'

Upon clicking the stone pillar next to Arben:

A lone pillar standing in this sacred grove. The design is familiar but it is not often that you see an unfinished monument such as this.

As you survey the unfinished monument you get the feeling that there will be a reason to return here when it is complete.

Sara Treewind is nearby:

You say, 'Hail, Sara Treewind'

Sara Treewind bows politely, 'A fine day to you, friend.'

Pemwenia Dagor is also nearby:

You say, 'Hail, Pemwenia Dagor'

Pemwenia Dagor raises her tearstained face from her hands and looks at you for a moment. She speaks in a soft whisper, 'It was... horrible... [horrible]...'

You say, 'Horrible?'

Pemwenia Dagor is visibly upset by your questioning. She begins shaking her head violently in a fit of emotion. Her words are louder, almost angry, '[They] have made their presence known again!'

You say, 'Who is they?'

Pemwenia Dagor looks to you then looks to the east. She says nothing then returns to her silent prayers.

Across the river is a sealed entrance to another area. Upon clicking the barricade in the blocked off area across the river, you see:

A barrier of living bark denies your entry.

Upon clicking the corpses scattered about:

Part of you wonders where the rest of the body ended up.

The mutilated torso drips blood onto the skeleton below it.

These bones appear to have been ripped out of the body that rests on the spikes above it.

The impaled body serves as a warning to anyone considering entry into the Unkempt Woods.

A discarded skeleton.

The lifeless hunk of flesh does not have any bite marks. Whatever killed this person was not interested in turning them into a meal.

Someone appears to be missing their legs.

Progress: Construction Started

Dolerite has finally been found through the "An Epic Request" tasks, and as turn-ins are made, the druid ring progresses in its build...

You say, 'Hail, Arben Leafsway'

Arben Leafsway says "A fine day indeed _____." He looks at the stone pillars and then turns back towards you. "Coming along nicely, wouldn't you agree? Anyway, if you happen to come across any pieces of dolerite, it would certainly help this project along. Just leave any pieces you come across by any of the pillars here and I'll get around to shaping them."

With the Small Dolerite Shard in your inventory, you can click on one of the pillars making up the would-be druid ring (this removes the Dolerite from your inventory):

You set the small shard of stone down next to the pillar. A small contribution to the ambitious project.

As you survey the unfinished monument you get the feeling that there will be a reason to return here when it is complete.

If you click the pillars without the Dolerite in your inventory, you see (depending on how far along the monument's construction has come):

The monument radiates with a faint semblance of power. Adventurers have been hard at work collecting the small bits of stone that make up this great site.

Or:

The familiar design of the ancient druidic monuments is recognizable just by the three pillars standing in this sacred grove.

Or:

Four stone pillars stand proudly in this sacred grove. It won't be long before the central pillar is raised and the monument takes a more recognizable form.

Progress: All Six Pillars Up

With all six pillars standing, if you hail him at the ring:

Arben Leafsway looks up with dark circles under his eyes. From the looks of it this halfling has not splept in weeks, 'Greetings, greetings to you, _____, I trust you are well? Can you believe it, the monument is nearly complete! This sacred ring, so close to the Shrine of Karana, it is a union of our people's most holy rites. Although I hate to beg, I must ask that if you come across any dolerite in your travels that you place it here by one of the pillars.'

If you hail him at the campfire:

Arben Leafsway looks up with wide-eyed excitement, his voice squeaks with intensity, 'I've hardly been able to sleep these last few days. The monument is nearly complete, oh to think of how I will be remembered in history as the architect of the new grand spires! You kind adventurers are wholly to thank for supplying the materials for this incredible work. Speaking of which, if you happen to come across any shards of dolerite, please leave them over by the pillars.'

Progress: Druid Ring Completed

With the druid ring completed, Arben Leafsway is known to say:

Arben Leafsway surveys the fine monument before looking up at you, 'I should have expected that this would not be a site people would use for transport, not that I am upset over the fact. There is little reason to travel here, it is dangerous, Surefall Glade is close by and has long been a site of transport attunement, still...' The halfling shakes his head quickly, 'No matter, I am no less proud of this amazing feat. You wouldn't believe the number of doubters I had, some going so far as claiming that there are spirits haunting these ruins!' The halfling cackles, 'Silly madmen and their rumors...'

Or:

Arben Leafsway warms his hands by the fireside. The halfling lets out a heavy sigh before speaking, 'It is quite a relief to have my great monument completed, but there is a strange emptiness in my life now, as if I have nothing to aspire to now...' The halfling stops and looks toward the sky, 'Perhaps I need a new project, something even more grand.' He smiles, 'Maybe exploring the Unkempt!' The halfling cackles gleefully and becomes lost in his own thoughts.

A barely visible NPC called "a familiar spirit" is next to the campfire:

You say, 'Hail, a familiar spirit'

a familiar spirit turns his head toward you but does not move. The figure seems confused that you can see him. He contemplates for a moment before speaking, 'So you see me, not many do.' He stops and looks around, 'Treasure your living moments and leave nothing undone in your life. You may not have tomorrow to share with the ones you love.'

a familiar spirit looks toward you and nods, 'Live your life with no regrets.'

Ring of Jaggedpine

Upon setting down a Small Dolerite Shard at a completed druid ring (if your server has it completed), you see:

You set the small shard of stone down next to the pillar. Reinforcement for the already finished project.

As you survey the impressive monument, a twinkling light catches your eye. You reach down to uncover a ring that has been carefully placed at the base of the pillar. Some long-lost heirloom to add to your collection.

You receive a "Ring of Jaggedpine" (1-hour reuse portal to Jaggedpine Forest -- note that this ring isn't always awarded and it isn't known under what conditions it would be):

A druid who hasn't begun "An Epic Request" gets this response when clicking on the completed monument:

Your understanding of this monument's importance is... lacking. Return when you have completed some impressive feat, like the telling of an epic journey to royalty elsewhere in the world.

Additionally, a char that has completed "An Epic Request" prior to completion of the monument, just needs to click on the completed monument to receive the Ring of Jaggedpine.

I had opportunity to visit Jaggedpine today, so I stopped to talk to my lil' buddy Arben. He had some new text to offer. Well, it was new to me anyway, I haven't been in Jaggedpine recently, so no clue when he started using this dialog.

You say, 'Hail, Arben Leafsway'

Arben Leafsway surveys the fine monument before looking up at you, 'I should have expected that this would not be a site people would use for transport, not that I am upset over the fact. There is little reason to travel here, it is dangerous, Surefall Glade is close by and has long been a site of transport attunement, still...' The halfling shakes his head quickly, 'No matter, I am no less proud of this amazing feat. You wouldn't believe the number of doubters I had, some going so far as claiming that there are spirits haunting these ruins!' The halfling cackles, 'Silly madmen and their rumors...'

I could not get him to respond further, despite feeding him a multitude of possible prompts. So, I just hung out and waited for nightfall, in hopes of finding some sign of spirits haunting the place. An NPC named a familiar spirit appeared near Arben's campfire, and then proceeded to roam around the druid ring area. NPC is the elven ghost model, same as what is commonly found in Hills of Shade or Bloodmoon Keep. Cons ally to me. Not attackable, not killable, so no way to determine to which faction it belongs.

You say, 'Hail, a familiar spirit'

a familiar spirit looks toward you and nods, 'Live your life with no regrets.'

I also could not get any further response from the spirit.

I and some people helped to do the final stretch of finishing the building of the druid ring on a server a few months ago.

Long story short of my observations while doing it:

Everyone on the server who does "An Epic Request" and clicks on the druid ring monument/replica with a dolerite shard in inventory, helps to build up the ring on that server. Once enough people on the server have contributed dolerite, the druid ring is completed on that server and stays permanently completed. From that point onwards on that server, people who complete (or have already completed) "An Epic Request" can click the druid ring and receive the clicky "Ring of Jaggedpine".

In addition, once the ring is complete, a ghost appears at night time only (EQ time) to whom you can speak. More work needed to see if the ghost leads to any more quests.

===============

Some observations I have from doing this over and over lots one evening, in order to help complete the ring on my server (it was pretty far into the building process at the time, but not quite there yet):

- This is similar in idea to the per-server, entire-server's-community-wide contribution quest to build up the druid/wizard portal ring+stone in Shard's Landing: "Shards of Fear (AKA ROF Pre-Launch: Fear Shard Collection)"

- Clicking the druid ring while you have a Dolerite Shard in inventory helps to build up the ring. Any character with a dolerite shard in their inventory can click the Jaggedpine druid ring and it increments some server-side counter that tracks how many dolerites have been added.

- You get a dolerite shard by being a non-druid doing the "An Epic Request" task and doing the Jaggedpine exploration step.

- Non-druids help build the ring by clicking it with a dolerite shard in inventory. A druid contributes one or more virtual dolerite shards automatically when completing the druid-specific portion of "An Epic Request" in Jaggedpine Forest.

- You don't have to actually finish "An Epic Request" to get a shard or contribute to build the ring.

- Each EQ server's ring has its own independent build-up counter. So some servers will be at different stages of the construction process depending on how many people have been working on "An Epic Request".

===============

If your server is lagging behind and still doesn't have a completed druid ring, some ideas that may help to speed up construction (some of which I have tested personally):

- Convince fellow server-mates to do An Epic Request a few times!

- To get a dolerite shard, you only need to be able to request "An Epic Request" and get to the Jaggedpine step. The build construction counter goes up when you click the ring with a shard in inventory, not when you finish "An Epic Request". So you can consider the following steps too.

- Get quest, get dolerite (visit Jaggedpine river area), click the druid ring to contribute to its construction, drop the quest, and re-get it to get a new shard and keep building it up.

- Easier to help contribute to build the ring over and over as a non-druid class, because druids need to go through the whole druid-specific step before they get the equivalent of a dolerite shard contribution.

- Note that wizards and druids can bind / secondary-bind / tertiary-bind in Felwithe near the quest giver to "An Epic Request" and in Jaggedpine near the druid ring. They can also group-port-to-bind to help ferry back and forth lots of people.

- Many wizards can help each other to port-to-bind back and forth between Felwithe / Jaggedpine while waiting for cooldown/refresh on Teleport-Bind AA.

You say, 'Hail, Arben Leafsway'
Arben Leafsway looks up with dark circles under his eyes. From the looks of it this halfling has not slept in weeks, 'Greetings, greetings to you, *charname*, I trust you are well? Clicking the pillars:
You begin to wonder how many adventurers have travelled to this site and placed the small stones needed for this monument's construction.

Same here; maybe it was a broken state between current intented state and upcoming state with CotF release.

Someone injected a bit of the CotF beta or Test server state in here - you will NOT getting a ring on Live servers yet.

I was doing the 'An Epic Request' task, and acquired the Small Dolerite Shard along the way. When I went to click on the pillars in NorthWestern Jaggedpine, I got a different message than those already posted, and the druid ring appears to be completed.

In yellow text: "You set the small shard of stone down next to the pillar. Reinforcement for the already finished project."
In white text: "As you survey the impressive monument, a twinkling light catches your eye. You reach down to uncover a ring that has been carefully placed at the base of the pillar. Some long-lost heirloom to add to your collection."

A red ring appears on your cursor:

The central pillar has been erected on Erollisi Marr, and now when clicking on the monument without a shard you get.

The central spire of the monument has taken shape. The design of this new monument is almost identical to the ancient ruins found throughout Norrath. Arben's ambitions are now closer to realization than ever.

Also when hailing Arben near the pillars you get the following:

Arben Leafsway looks up with dark circles under his eyes. From the looks of it this halfling has not splept in weeks, 'Greetings, greetings to you, Caell, I trust you are well? Can you believe it, the monument is nearly complete! This sacred ring, so close to the Shrine of Karana, it is a union of our people's most holy rites. Although I hate to beg, I must ask that if you come across any dolerite in your travels that you place it here by one of the pillars.'

It seems at night Arben will go sit at the fire off to west a bit, when hailed he says:

Arben Leafsway looks up with wide-eyed excitement, his voice squeaks with intensity, 'I've hardly been able to sleep these last few days. The monument is nearly complete, oh to think of how I will be remembered in history as the architect of the new grand spires! You kind adventurers are wholly to thank for supplying the materials for this incredible work. Speaking of which, if you happen to come across any shards of dolerite, please leave them over by the pillars.'

There are now 6 pillars: South and east side have 2 pillars each, north and west a single pillar each.
The paired sets of pillars face their symbols to their partner.

Click text (in white):
"The unpaired pillars are interesting when juxtaposed to the paired sets. Arben's monument is slowly taken shape".
(in light blue):
As you survey the unfinished monument you get the feeling that there will be a reason to return here when it's complete.

Central pillar seems to be complete now (not sure if its cross-server, but I'm on CT).

I contributed 2 shards, both yielded expected results:
Same text in yellow:
You set the small shard of stone down next to the pillar. A small contribution to the ambitious project.
Same text in blue:
As you survey the unfinished monument you get the feeling that there will be a reason to return here when it is complete.

Afterward, clicking the pillar resulted in new text in white:
A sense of peace fills your soul as you survey the ever-expanding monument. It will not be long before the site is complete.

While I did the EPIC augment task again, I noticed there are now four pillars in Jaggedpine on AB. The central one is still missing.

New text:
(Pillars, after clicking)
Four stone pillars stand proudly in this sacred grove. It won't be long before the central pillar is raised and the monument takes a more recognizable form.

(Arben, after hailing)
'A fine day indeed, _____.' He looks at the stone pillars and then turns back toward you, 'Coming along nicely, wouldn't you agree? Anyway, if you happen to come across any pieces of dolerite, it would certainly help this project along. Just leave any pieces you come across by any of the pillars here and I'll get around to shaping them.'

As I was doing my epic request (ranger) I got the "small dolerite shard" and looked it up. Reading here that Arben Leafsway wants them, I tried handing him one but he gave it back. Hailed him and he said:

"A fine day indeed Shadowsedge."
He looks at the stone pillars and then turns back towards you.
"Coming along nicely, wouldn't you agree? Anyway, if you happen to come across any pieces of dolerite, it would certainly help this project along. Just leave any pieces you come across by any of the pillars here and I'll get around to shaping them."

I could not drop it so put it back in my bag. I clicked the druid stone pillar and got a message:

"You set the small shard of stone down next to the pillar. A small contribution to the ambitious project."
"As you survey the unfinished monument you get the feeling that there will be a reason to return here when it is complete."

I looked in my bags and it was gone. So I clicked the druid stone pillar again and got the message:

The familiar design of the ancient druidic monuments is recognizable just by the three pillars standing in this sacred grove."

Nothing else after that. Must be part of a future expansion.

With the introduction of An Epic Request on March 15, 2013, an item called Small Dolerite Shard appeared.

This may be given to non-druids who complete the Jaggedpine exploration step of the quest, and may be use to contribute to build a druid ring monument on each individual server, as per the comments from Reebo Leefsway in the writeup above. However, druids do not get a small dolerite shard for completing the druid sub-quest, but I believe that druids contribute to the building of the ring simply by successfully completing the druid-specific instanced zone part of An Epic Request (Druid), as per the final line of text that shows up just before the instance completes that suggests the stones have been built up some more.

This is my observation so far, based on what I've observed and what I've heard from other people. Please contribute more info if anyone knows more details.

I think Rondor may have it right. I did the ornament quest on a 90 druid and he didn't get one, but a 70 bard did.

And I'm probably way off base here, but what are the chances it has something to do with the upcoming expansion? Maybe not a lead-in, but something to bring attention to the area. It could explain why you "get the feeling that there will be a reason to return".

(Kind of feel like I should've signed up for the beta after all.)

This may lead into the next expansion that centers around the origins of lycanthrophy:

http://loreofnorrath.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/lycanthropes-and-their-kin/

http://loreofnorrath.wordpress.com/2009/12/25/the-unkempt-warders-vol-i/

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?topic_id=412346

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=54286

So from what I can piece together is that the druids trying to build the teleportation device may end up peeving-off the denizens of the Unkempt Woods, who want nothing to do with outsiders, in their quest to quench their thirst for knowledge of the "unkempt" ways. Then I am guessing some big war will erupt and it'll be good ol' folks of Norrath to come to the rescue (translation - ***** things up even more).
