You say, 'Hail, Runethar Hamest'

Runethar Hamest says 'Welcome to the Temple of Thunder. We are home to paladins and clerics who follow the ways of Karana. Do you [need guidance] or are you [already a follower of Karana]?'

You say, 'I am a follower of Karana.'

Runethar Hamest says 'So you are one with our cause? This is good. Be aware that there are forces at work which not even the Qeynos Guard can keep at bay. We are here to spread the words of Karana and smite those who should try to end His children. We and Antonius Bayle shall work together in our destruction of evil. He requests our aid. Do you also [wish to assist Lord Bayle]?'

You say, 'I wish to assist Lord Bayle.'

Runethar Hamest says 'Then we command you to assist the Qeynos Guard with the destruction of Blackburrow. Report to Captain Tillin of the Qeynos Guard and speak with him of the [gnolls of Blackburrow]. I believe he is at the arena. My loyal friend, if you have earned your Thunder Staff, I urge you to [retrieve the Bayle list].'

You say, 'How do I retrieve the Bayle list?'

Runethar Hamest says 'Well, friend, the Temple of Thunder has recognized and appreciates your past deeds for us. But this matter is of vital importance to us and we need more proof of your devotion to our cause.'

You need high warmly with Knights of Thunder to progress past this point.

Runethar Hamest says 'The Temple of Thunder was asked by Antonius Bayle to retrieve a list. He does not trust his own militia of late. He asked me to send a knight to the Jaggedpine to find a man named Frenway Marthank. When you find him, you are to tell him that [Toe needs the Bayle List]. Return the Bayle List and your Thunder Staff to me and I shall provide a fine reward. Be aware that the shadowknights of Bertoxxulous are also after the list. Be careful!'

Head to Surefall Glade and find Frenway Marthank in the Druids' Guildtree.

You say, 'Toe needs the bayle list'

Frenway Marthank says 'The Bayle List is gone. It lies inside the belly of that beast, Mammoth.'

You say, 'Who is Mammoth?'

Frenway Marthank says 'Mammoth is the great bear which inhabits the caves. It was he that swallowed my son whole. My son was using the scroll case as a play sword when Mammoth approached. I know you need the list but my vows as a Protector of the Pine forbid me to harm the bear. Help me ease my pain. Kill Mammoth and bring me his hide. You will find the list inside the beast.'

If you can find and slay Mammoth, you will get the list. There are more than a few people in Surefall Glade who will strike you down for attacking the bears, so be very careful. Alternately, give Mammoth the Regurgitonic and he will cough it up for you. Return the list and Mammoth's Hide to Frenway and he will in turn give you the Bayle List II.

Frenway Marthank says 'It is not right to feel satisfied at the sight of Mammoth's hide, but I do. Thank you, ______.'
Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos could not possibly get any better.
You gain experience!!

Once you have the Bayle list II, you need to get the Thunder Staff. You can get this by doing the good version of the Drosco the Zombie quest. He will give you the Thunder Staff. Take that and the Bayle list II back to Runethar, and he will reward you with your very own Bonethunder Staff.

Runethar Hamest says 'I thank you, but before I reward you I must have both the Bayle List II and your Thunder Staff.'

Runethar Hamest says 'Antonius Bayle will be pleased. The Temple is also pleased. Here is the enchanted staff we call Bonethunder. Should you find the enchantment gone, just ask Kasine to [enchant Bonethunder]. We need more disciples like you! Go forth to tell the world of the Rainkeeper.'

Your faction standing with Knights of Thunder has been adjusted by -50.
Your faction standing with Bloodsabers has been adjusted by 50.
Your faction standing with Priests of Life has been adjusted by -37.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by -37.
You gain experience!!

If you go to Kasine Paedra and say "enchant Bonethunder" to her, you see this:

Kasine Paegra says, 'If you wish the power of the Rainkeeper to once again whine upon your weapon, you must hand me Bonethunder and 500 Gold Coins.'

Note that there doesn't seem to be much point in this as the weapon has unlimited charges; however, if you give her the weapon and 500 gold coins, you see this:

Kasine Paedra says, 'I am ordered to only enchant the spell when I have both Bonethunder and 500 gold coins.'
Kasine Paedra says, 'The Rainkeeper has bestowed this weapon with power once more. Take it and defend our temple.'

On the progression servers, at least, quests similar to this one that give you a low level magic weapon are good for one thing. Wisp hunting. Lightstones and greater lightstones are a good source of income for a newbie but to get them, you need a weapon with the 'magic' tag as wisps are invulnerable to non-magic weapons. Suddenly, the old world newbie zones are populated again with players seeking out these low level magic weapons.

this quest now seems to require Ally faction with the Knights of Thunder.

was doing Bone chips quest from Wolten Grafe watching my faction go higher and higher, at Warmly Runethar would not give quest, asked for me to prove myself to the Temple of Thunder first.

Soon as i hit Ally he offered the rest of the quest dialogue.

At the end you're told you can [enchant Bonethunder] to Kasine Paedra, so I started with the bracketed text. This point of the quest is useless and quite costly for such a bad weapon, since it's a combat proc and has no charges to speak of.

Kasine Paegra says, 'If you wish the power of the Rainkeeper to once again whine upon your weapon, you must hand me Bonethunder and 500 Gold Coins.'

Kasine Paedra says, 'I am ordered to only enchant the spell[sic] when I have both Bonethunder and 500 gold coins.'

Kasine Paedra says, 'The Rainkeeper has bestowed this weapon with power once more. Take it and defend our temple.'

By doing the Regurgitonic quest, she tells you to give her whatever Mammoth drops. Give her the Bayle List II and this is the text she gives.

TeAnara says, 'Oh my! This must belong to Antonius Bayle. I shall see that he receives it. You have done a great service to Qeynos and Surefall Glade. I reward you with this. May it be of great use in your future deeds.

(faction hits, random lowbie spell)

You say, 'Who is Antonius Bayle?'

TeAnara says, 'Antonius Bayle is a good man. His rule of Qeynos has been most kind to our land as well. We also provide the key elements to his long range patrol division. Our own [Ralem Christoff] serves as Field Marshall for that division.'

You say, 'Who is Ralem Christoff?'

TeAnara says, 'Ralem Christoff is one of the finest warriors to come out of the Jaggedpine. He was born and raised to be a ranger. He now serves Antonius Bayle as a Field Marshall of a roving patrol. His quiet, calm exterior hides a tactical genius and ferocious combatant.'

There is no "Ralem Christoff" that exists in the game that I know of.

# Oct 05 2004 at 8:24 AM Rating: Default
Why is everyone complaining about "Why would you want this . . . the stats for a Paladin is aweful or a cleric shouldn't be in melee (that is crap by the way)"

The whole purpose in my opinion, of doing quests is to DO THEM. One can go kill damn gobbys in Kaladim or kill giants in Rathe Mtns and collect plats or even better go to E-bay and sell some real money for plats, come to the damn Bazaar and buy your freakin HIGH STAT weapons if your so into UBBER items.

Better yet go join a server that is NOT A ROLEPLAYING PREFERED SERVER and join a raider-guild and get your stat-weapon given to you and head for the highend game . . . you will learn quickly that once there you missed all the fun inbetween.

Sorry - I get sick of folks rushing around ******** at everyone because of "bad-stats" and then telling them that they have **************** weapons compared to theirs.

How do I find Mammoth? I have been checking in SFG on and off for weeks and I have never ever seen him. Is there a way to get him to spawn? I've killed poachers left and right and I'm at a loss here. Any help would be appreciated.

I camped him for about 2-3 hours per day for two days. Whatever the "wanderer" spawn is in the waterfall area, that's the PH for Mammoth. Just let the current mob walk around until it despawns. Mammoth should EVENTUALLY pop...right about the point you're ready to rip your hair out (like I was). Then, it turns out, I didn't have sufficient faction and lost my Thunderstaff on the turn-in. That's OK - I'm much happer with my Jagged Blade of Mourning/Shield of the Stalwart Seas combo.

If your a cleric, you shouldn't be in melee situations, so, if the thunder staff has the same wis (+3) bonus, why even bother doing this part to get the bonethunder? Also, If you are a Paladin, why would you want a weapon with such crappy melee stats?
RE: why bother?
# Apr 04 2002 at 10:32 AM Rating: Default
I am a cleric who does not wish to simply allow his melee skills to atrophy. i try to spend half of every experience level soloing to maintain what combat skills I have. Anyone who has played a leric knows this is possible only against the undead due to the awesome ******* of cleric undead spells. A staff that procs one of these spells would be greatly appreciated by myself or any other cleric that gets asked to run solo into some undead infested zone to rez a big tough melee.
Be careful with your list!
# Jul 22 2001 at 3:09 PM Rating: Excellent
I just got a list out of Mammoth by giving him the regurgitonic, and after checking the quest description above, I gave it to Frenway Marthank expecting the Bayle List II in return. However all I got was the standard "Umm.. I don't know quite what to do with this, but thanks.." message.

Needless to say I was quite annoyed!

******* UPDATE *********

I have now completed the quest using another batch of regurgitonic and I can confirm that the quest description is currently wrong, and Mammoth in fact coughs up the *Bayle List II* which should go DIRECTLY to Runethar Hamest with your Thunderstaff. You don't need to give Frenway ANYTHING to gain your Bonethunder Staff, and the Bayle List (I) does not feature in this quest at all.

One last bit of info - giving Mammoth the Regurgitonic results in the following faction adjustments:

QRG Protected Animals gets BETTER
Protectors of Pine gets BETTER
JaggedPine Treefolk gets BETTER
Karana Bandits gets WORSE

Oh - and I can confirm Raimei's observation about the odd faction hits upon finally getting your Bonethunder Staff - GuardofQeynos and PriestsofLife go DOWN, KnightsofThunder and BloodSabers go UP! Very very odd..

Faction Hits
# Jun 16 2001 at 3:02 AM Rating: Default
Just hit 25 and wanted to tie up a few loose ends before I continue powerleveling, one of which was the bonethunder staff. I conned threatening to the QRG Animals (Surefall bears) and for the life of me could not get my faction up. Because of this regurgitonic didn't work and I had to just kill the big gift of Tunare, fortunately it had almost no impact on my faction.

The main problem I had with this quest though was at the very very end. I saunter up to Runthar with my thunder staff in hand and bayle list in pack and turn in my hard earned items. I get a pleasent commendation message, a tad bit of exp and a very odd faction message:
-faction with knights of thunder got better
-faction with bloodsabers got better
-faction with priests of life got worse
-faction with qeynos guards got worse

As you can see this was quite disheartening. Is my great and noble guild somehow corrupted by the Bloodsabers as well? Once again, the faction hits didn't seem to effect much if any, but it is still very puzzling to see my faction increase with the bloodsabers and decrease with the priests and guards.

RE: Faction Hits
# Oct 27 2001 at 6:32 PM Rating: Default
I am convinced the faction hits on this final part of the quest are coded incorrectly. I just finished this quest this week, and received the same faction message as the previous poster.

However, the faction hits they tell you are only partly correct. I had just hit low Allied with the Knights of Thunder by handing in bone chips to Wolten Grafe. When I completed the Bonethunder quest, it *said* my standing with KnightsofThunder went up, but in reality it went back down to Warmly. So you take a negative hit with Thunder as well.

The negative faction they tell you with the Guards of Qeynos is correct however. While turning in bone chips to Wolten, my faction standing with GuardsofQeynos had maxed out...I got the 'your faction standing with 'x' cannot possibly get better' message with them. But once I turned in the Bayle List II and my Thunderstaff, it went back down. I am still Allied with the Guards, but now there's room for improvement again :-)

Being as I am a Priest of Life, I'm not going to check with the local Bloodsabers to see if they actually think any better of me since the faction message. Somehow, I don't think one hit is going to make much difference on my standing with them... :-)

So to summarize, the Temple of Thunder hasn't been corrupted by the Bloodsabers...at least I don't think so. But this particular quest has it's faction hits/messages all messed up. It hasn't been fixed, I'm convinced, because so few people complete it...and once you do it, you're not likely to repeat it again. If the Bonethunder staff was a sellable/farmable item, then you'd hear people howl, and it would get more attention.

As it is, it's only a one-time faction hit, and not a fatal one at that, so we all live with it as a minor inconvenience. I wouldn't let it keep me from doing the quest.

P.S. As a level 21 cleric, I love this weapon. Most of the time it has proc'd for me just when it seems I've needed it most :-)

# Jan 16 2001 at 12:52 AM Rating: Excellent
I just finished the quest. It is a straight forward quest, for a good weapon...I love it. And I recommend any paladins or clerics (lvl 10-30) to do this quest. Under level 25 will need help killing the Mammoth (or if you don't mind running to Ak anon to get the vomit potion.)

NOTE TO PALADINS: The Bonethunder Staff and Shining Star of Light quests also help your faction for Armor of Ro and Soulfire. If you can do the Bonethunder and SSoL quests, then your Qeynos faction is good for Soulfire/Ro...a nice side-effect :).

1. Drocso in the Qeynos catacombs for Order of Thunder

I first went to the catacombs to get the Order of Thunder badge (its really a +5 cha 2 ac necklace.) Drosco pops in the middle of a hexagon room, with 3 rats popping all all sides but the door side. The room is before the hallway with the 3 waterways.

NOTE: Do not wander past the hallway with the 3 waterways...there are 35+ zombies and necros waiting to kill you a few rooms down. Stay in the drosco room and kill the rats to get the AC2 +3cha neck from the Nesting rat if you get bored (they both pop in Drosco room.)

It took me 4 hours of camping, over 3 days to get the Order of Thunder neck. So have another character ready, or at least hunt nearby so you can check the Drosco spawn point every 30 minutes.

I went to the room, found a Gelationous Cube. Killed it and 30 minutes later, another cube, slayed it too. Camped and played another char. Logged on again and found 'A Zombie' in the middle of the room (it's Drosco.) Killed the zombie and it *did not* drop the order of thunder (only a sealed note.) Waited another 30 minutes and another gelatinous cube. Camped. A couple more rounds like this, camped again. Then logged on in the morning and Drosco was there with the order of thunder!

So Drosco poped 2 times, the placeholder (Gelatinous cube) poped 6 times. Drosco had the Order of Thunder 1 time out of 2 kills.

2. Grizzly Mammoth for the Bayle List II

I then headed to Surefall Glade. The Mammoth pops behind the waterfall, right behind the ranger guild. This spawn was easier to get than Drosco...I ran around killing poachers for 1 hour, then the mammoth poped. I slayed the innocent creature (blue at 27, it only took 200 hps off) because it KOSed me. So didnt get to try the potion.

It dropped a Bayles List II and a HQ bear pelt. Turn in the Poacher's heads to the rangers guild to get your faction back.

Grizzly Mammoth pops 1 time every 2-3 hours. It will walk around for a bit then despawn. No placeholder was killed to get him to pop. He is around level 22 (blue at 27) and was very easy for a 27 to slay (didn't even break a sweat.) Beware though, I have heard that he can tear you up if you are even.

3. Turn in the items to paladin guild in SQeynos.

I was concerned with faction, but I have been killing bandits in WK/EK/LR & turning in their sashes so I was warmly to Wolten and Runthar. I gave the the Order of Thunder to Wolten...he gave me the Thunder STaff. I turned the staff and the bayles list II to Runthar, and I got the Bonethunder staff. No problems for warmly con, but I did talk Runthar through the quest just in case...and he told me about it.

Even at 27, the bonethunder staff is a good paladin/cleric item to keep up 2hb. Especially with the 41pt proc against undead :)

I also recommend doing the Shining Star of Light quest. Paladin/Cleric only 6/26...procs Cleanse. Both are great weapons for teens to mid 20s, and both have tons of roleplaying value for clerics/paladins.

Be well!

Only one small problem with your first step, camping Drosco.. the A zomibie was obviously NOT Drosco, because Drosco is a named zombie. Ergo, the A zombie is just another placeholder (Yes, there can be more than one specific placeholder.)
So you got the Order of Thunder from Drosco 1 out of 1 times, or 100%

Actually, every time I killed "a zombie" in that chamber, it dropped the necklace. The zombie no longer has a character name, although it apparently had one in the past. You can always confirm it if you're doing the Thunderstaff quest and hand the zombie the note (which is nearly impossible if you're aggro to him) from Wolten. The zombie will actually SAY something before he tries to kill you. Pretty much, if there's a zombie in the room, it's Drosco.
