Veil of Alaris Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

NOTE: This is the quest entry for the group version of "The Herald of Oratory". See this quest entry for the raid version.

This group mission begins with Zarbak in the Valley of Lunanyn, located in the vicinty of 1725, -1150, -45 (in the Rallosian camp in the northeastern part of the larger section of the zone).

Pre-requisites for requesting the task:
- Completion of "Raid and Recover"
- Completion of "The Assassination Game"
- Completion of "Uncharted Territory"
- Completion of "The Enemy of My Enemy"
- Completion of "The Memory Remains"
- Completion of "Into the Abyss"
- Minimum Skill Level in Alaran Language: 10

You say, 'Hail, Zarbak'

Zarbak says 'You, _____! Let Zarbak feels the meats of your head! Yes, yes, good and thick! Perfect for knowings of the bashings and smashings! In the [army] of Zek you want to fight? Are you ready to [go]?'

You say, 'The army?'

Zarbak says 'Army of Zek is strong! With goblins and ogres, Zarbak says no need for weakling races. But Vallon says great [battle] is coming, need to fill valley with walls of sword and shield. So, you now in army of Zek!'

You say, 'What battle?'

Zarbak says 'Rumblings low shiver air on southern horizon. Mirage of sound lingers over enemy camp and hides goings and doings. Powerful voice bellows in strange tongue. Even Rallos concerned. Zarbak sees Rallos talking with Sol Ro, alliances forming, armies meeting as one. Zarbak thinks Rallos finds what he [seeks].'

You say, 'He seeks what?'

Zarbak says 'You have not much knowings as I thought! All gods have had much talking. Cazic is dead, his plane empty! Where fled his essence? An [island] appears, and Rallos says Zarbak and army must go.'

You say, 'An island?'

Zarbak says 'Now search we do, resting not until Rallos satisfied. No army thwarts us, not with big thick heads like you to think for our front lines! Do you bring with you [many] companions, or but a [few]?'

You say, 'A few'

Zarbak says 'Much can be accomplished with little. [Go] and achieve victory!'

You have been assigned the task 'The Herald of Oratory'.

You say, 'We're ready to go'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Valley of War.

The forces of Erillion march across Arelis Valley to defeat the armies of Rallos Zek and Solusek Ro. Command the soldiers of the Norrathian gods to stop Erillion's advance.

Prevent the army of Erillion from reaching Solusek Ro and Rallos Zek. Defeat the Herald of Oratory.

Defend Rallos Zek and Solusek Ro from the forces of Erillion and kill the Herald of Oratory 0/1 (Valley of Lunanyn)

Claim your reward from the chest the gods have given you 0/1 (Valley of Lunanyn)

Buy soldiers from the Quartermaster, position both offensive and defensive soldiers around the gods and use offensive soldiers in the valley below in preparation for the named.

NOTE: The invaders and the named (to begin with) aren't killable by players. You have to use the soldiers, which will kill mobs as they wander through.

All mobs have a damage aura up which will do about 15k damage per tick as long as you're in range.

The Herald of Oratory has the same damage aura as well as a shield that prevents damage from being done to her.

In order to destroy the shield and make her killable, you have to position numerous soldiers around her. Once you get the emote saying her shield has been destroyed, you can attack and kill her by normal means. Note that even once she's live, the invading forces continue to attack the gods, so you'll have to keep them defended as well.

Zarbak gives you details about how the task works:

You say, 'Hail, Zarbak'

Zarbak says 'These streaks of light do you see? Rallos Zek and Solusek Ro light the paths of the enemy as they march from the south! If the gods stay concentrated, Zarbak thinks we can know where to place [defenses]!'

You say, 'Defenses?'

Zarbak says 'A thick, strong head have you, not like Zarbak! You must tell army where to defend. Keep enemy from reaching gods and distracting them. I will tell you [how].'

You say, 'How?'

Zarbak says 'Zek army don't trust outsider like you. They won't take orders unless you pay them. I put moneys in this chest. Take it and talk to quartermaster. He assigns you [troops] for moneys.'

You say, 'What about the troops?'

Zarbak says 'Stand where you want troops to stand, and call the ones you hired. They will hold strong at that spot. If they die, [pay] for more. [Fend off] the enemies, and kill the Herald of Oratory!'

You say, 'Pay for more?'

Zarbak says 'Rotten thieving enemies sneaked in camp at night and stole our moneys! Kill them and retrieve it! Pleased would be the quartermaster!'

You say, 'We'll fend off the enemies'

Zarbak says 'Speak with the quartermaster, and place your defenses. Once you do this, tell me you are ready to [begin]. If you believe you failed your task, you should [try again]. Don't even think to [leave] like a coward!'

Quartermaster Gelblat stands nearby:

You say, 'Hail, Quartermaster Gelblat'

Quartermaster Gelblat says 'How can I aid you in your defense?'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[1] Zek soldier ..... 2 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[2] Zek archer ..... 4 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[3] Sol Ro fire lord ..... 6 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[4] Sol Ro dark smoker ..... 8 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[5] Zek bruiser ..... 7 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[6] Sol Ro soother ..... 1 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[7] Sol Ro ash breather ..... 9 Marks of the Gods'

Quartermaster Gelblat says 'Would you like [details]?'

You say, 'I'd like details'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[1] a Zek soldier: HP - Medium. Damage - Low. Attack Speed - Medium. Range - Medium.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[2] a Zek archer: HP - Low. Damage - Very Low. Attack Speed - High. Range - Very High.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[3] a Sol Ro fire lord: HP - Medium. Damage - High. Attack Speed - Low. Range - High.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[4] a Sol Ro dark smoker: HP - Medium. Damage - Medium. Attack Speed - High. Range - Medium.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[5] a Zek bruiser: HP - High. Damage - Very High. Attack Speed - Low. Range - Medium.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[6] a Sol Ro soother: HP - Very Low. Healing - Medium. Healing Speed - High. Range - Very Low.'

Quartermaster Gelblat says '[7] a Sol Ro ash breather: HP - Low. Slowing - Low. Slowing Speed - Very Low. Range - Very Low.'

A chest called "chest of the gods" is found by the zone-in and contains numerous "Marks of the Gods". You can use the marks to purchase soldiers from the Quartermaster. Simply say the number of the soldier type you'd like to use:

You say, '7'

Quartermaster Gelblat says 'You have chosen well!'

You receive an item which you can right-click to summon that soldier type. The soldier will be permanently rooted in place and will defend its position according to the type as listed above.

You'll want to have several soldiers positioned around the two gods, as well as several attack soldiers positioned in the valley below, as this is where the Herald will position herself.

Place the soldiers as you wish and then say "begin" to Zarbak to initiate the event:

You say, 'We're ready to begin'

Zarbak shouts 'Everyone to their positions! The enemy will be upon us quickly!'

Lower your weapons and surrender! You will be taken under control of Erillion, unharmed!

Rallos Zek says 'Mortals, you must destroy the Herald! It commands these hordes. If you kill it, its army will retreat.'

Solusek Ro says 'Position our troops around the Herald. With concentrated effort, the troops can destroy the Herald's shield and render it vulnerable.'

The full power of Erillion will bear down upon those who threaten to sunder our unification!

As Erillion forces reach the gods, you'll see emotes like this:

an Erillian footsoldier reaches the gods and drops their concentration to 190 of 200.

If it reaches zero from 200, the task resets:

You have failed to defend Rallos Zek and Solusek Ro.

As the army forces kill off Erillion invaders, you'll see emotes like this:

You have defeated 10 enemy units.

Any time a soldier kills a member of the Erillion invaders, a chest spawns in its place. Loot the chest for more Marks and use those to buy and place additional soldiers.

Soon after the event has been started, the Herald of Oratory makes her way into the valley and positions herself in about the center area. Once she's positioned, you'll see this emote:

You interfere with an internal matter. What happens in our land concerns you not.

Once the soldiers have done enough collective damage to her, her shield will be destroyed:

Herald of Oratory's shield has been destroyed.

At this point, you can move in and kill her. She has about 5 million hitpoints, so if you don't have the DPS to kill it fast enough, you'll need to make sure the gods remain defended as invaders continue to attack them.

Herald of Oratory has been slain by _____!
Herald of Oratory shouts 'My body's demise is not the end. The Orator shall decimate every one of you!'

Open the chest to complete the task:

You have driven back Erillion's forces and defeated the Herald of Oratory.

You say, 'Hail, Zarbak'

Zarbak says 'Powerful was that [Herald]! What great strength must lie on this continent! Fear swells in Zarbak! We should [leave] from here and return to safer lands!'

You say, 'What about that herald?'

Zarbak says 'Zarbak hears the name of the Orator whispered on lips. He must be powerful that an entire valley trembles at his name!'

Went in for the first time, completely clueless, did it using the setup and coordinates given below, 3 boxing a lv90 bard, warrior, and cleric, ~3k AAs each, T3-4 HoT geared, 1 cleric and 2 rogue j5 mercs. Won with no problems. DPS was pretty low at level 90 so the herald took a while, but only one enemy got through to the gods (concentration reduced from 200 to 195). I did loot the footsoldier chests and laid down 3 extra archers and healers before the oracle appeared, dunno if that helped. One wandering mob hit my cleric for 16k standing near zorbak before the oracle arrived and a couple wandered near the oracle during the fight but didn't hit anything. Scagged a Sharris' Weapon Belt and a 92 or 93 cantrip.

No credit to us, this all belongs to Dredz. As far as "spoiler" goes, I think we all get those, "we spent 20 hours trying to do this" types of things to be happy to get one to go down easy and Dredz had it going on. We did exactly as he said.

I'm posting my map co-ordinates. The letter B stands for Brute, A for Archer and H for Soother (Soothers are healers).

A caveat here, we didn't know what "behind" meant. After we saw it run, not all the healers are "behind" per se but it worked as is so I'm posting as we used it. If I had my directions correct, the mobs walked in from the East, if you stand at Zarbak (in the zone) and face the pit, the mobs walk in from the left. We ran full group (2 peeps 3-boxing) with no probs (3-96s + 3-94s). We ran mage 96 air pet for tank.

This goes in your EQ install directory in the maps folder. Open the file aerlis-1.txt and paste this at the bottom and save it. You will probably have to re-run the EQ launcher to get them to show properly. Once we placed these and told Zarbak /say ready, we stood at the zone-in for about 5ish minutes. When we got the shields drop message, we ran to the pit and dropped him. Fight took us about 3 minutes with 3 mages and pets. Boxed healer had to work a bit at first but it seemed easier as it went, toward the end I seldom even bothered to go to his instance. Rough guess at 3 Meg HPs.

Zone in -- loot coins from chest -- Buy 2 Bruisers, 7 Archers, and 9 Soothers from the Quartermaster (Hail him for instructions). Set them as follows:

Bruiser1: -389, 539
Bruiser2: -402, 559
Archer1: -356, 583
Archer2: -333, 413
Archer3: -360, 326
Archer4: -202, 391
Archer5: -211, 271
Archer6: -290, 356
Archer7: -360, 503

Set a Soother slightly behind each one of those. Your may get the message that your units are too close together so if you do then just move slightly away from the closest unit until you can place the unit. Don't drag people with you when setting up units because your teammates will cause too close messages.

Once units are set go /say Begin to Zarbak. Keep everybody at your zone in point until you see the message that the Oratory's shields are down. Pay attention because you can miss it. It does take him a few minutes to path to the pit in front of the Gods. Once he's there his shield will drop almost instantly so be ready to run down in the pit where you put the bruisers. Run down, kick his butt, loot the chest up in front of the Gods. Done. Takes about 20 minutes. I have never failed with this setup yet. Good luck.

I have put the bruisers and healers around the spot several times when she ultimately stops and she just kills them in quick order, I can have my pets pound on her for 20 minutes and the barrier never drops. Seems impossible to me

Hey Suuan....couple of tips for you....

Use 2 bruisers and 1 archer at the rock....make sure you place the soother very close....
If you are looking in the direction of where the enemy spawns, place the 2 bruisers at 10 and 2 o'clock around the rock, with the archer a little further back at 6 o'clock.
Place the healers like 1 meter back and behind each of these....

This set up takes the shield down in like 10 seconds....so be ready to instantly engage so the things don't get splatted

In terms of the rest of the setup....I set up 6 archers and healers....3 close to the gods - the triangle format mentioned below works - but keep an eye on the pathing and you can work out optimal positioning. I also place 1 archer overlooking the valley where we fight the oratory, another a little further back from the valley (again check pathing) and one on the other side of the Gods where the mobs path. 1 Healer about 1 meter behind each of the archers.

With the initial set of marks you can create this setup from the start and no need to loot or place anythng

On the oratory fight - ensure you have a bit of dps - tank + 2x Dps is fine

This is an easy task once you mastered how to set your army in right position.
It takes about 15-20mins for 94 monk and 95 wizard and mercs to beat it, no sweat.
Use the following strategy posted, bruisers for breaking barrier of herald, archer for main defense power.
Put all of your soldiers as close as you can, make the density firepower.
Once the barrier of herald breaks, make sure you have around 10 or more archers stand still.
Move to herald and defeat it as soon as possible, since the enemy will get stronger and stronger as time goes by.

The drawback of this task is no xp gained except from chest.
But its glad to see the devs digged out some other play mode else than seek and destroy.
Along with the airship task in Argath, some ppl like it and others dislike it.
Its really hard to do something new with EQ outdated engine, but they tried and I am looking forward for more.

Credit to Saeel and Unholyczars, bruisers and soothers in the pit where Rallos and Solusek are facing.

Turn up the graphics, you will need to see the blue and orange rings the NPCs indicating their range.

Best Feature of this mission: If you fail, you can tell Zarbak to "try again", resetting the mission.

Place 3 archers around RZ and SR in a triangle with 3 healers, one near each.

Herald paths near the small rock in the pit closest to RZ and SR, so place the bruisers near there. The Herald will path from left to right as you face the pit. I used 4 bruisers, 2 healers, and 1 archer. This was more than enough to break down the barrier each time.

You can damage the trash mobs as they path to help out your defenses, I was able to dot the first few to 60% or so before they reached the gods.

Be careful of the Herald in the pit. As soon as I got near the Herald, I got aggro, which included the entire party, we could no longer loot chests to bolster defenses. However, I only needed to loot enough chests to place 3 or 4 additional mobs each time I have succeeded. You can easily loot chests near the gods to gain enough Marks to keep them safe while you kill the Herald. I added archers around the gods.

I would wait to go near the pit until you are ready to engage Herald, which was not difficult, just alot of hps and took awhile.

Also, I suggest using an /open hotbutton for the chests, much easier.

Update: Some "caster" mobs were pathing by us when killing Herald and punted some of us across the pit and did about 20k or so damage each time, very annoying. Hadn't seen them the other 3 times we did this mission.

I'm not sure I'd want to grind this mission, but I don't mind having tinkered around with it once, and will happily help guildies learn it. The observations in this post were spot on; just a few things to add:

Be careful you ask for what you intended. The jumble of prices makes it easy to speak the wrong number. If you get it wrong, just reset. On our first attempt, the person running it (none of us had done it before) found some strat posted (maybe even this one) but fumbled and bought three [7]s instead of some number of soother [6]s, and then ran out of initial Marks. If we'd known how easy it is to reset we probably would've, but we assumed we'd need to cancel the mission and zone out and retake it; once we learned we could reset from within the mission we were much more willing to experiment. But it still gave us a chance to see how the event works.

Be aware that, like the first Argath mission, it may not matter what your character normally does for a living. Healers are still handy. Various other abilities may be useful but not essential. But for most part it doesn't matter who's directing the soldiers until it's time to kill the Herald. The problem is that the Marks are No Trade, so only the person who loots them can spend them. It seems it'd be more fun if the group could split up into looters and directors, but oh well. If you do the strat given here and get it right, I doubt you'll need many extras anyway, so just have someone handle it.

Another reason to run the thing a few times and "try again", is that they all add up toward the "Tower Offense" bonus achievement.

It can be tricky to judge what's inside the rings. Be sure the soothers are within range of their targets, and make sure the archers' circles overlap. If you leave gaps the enemy *will* find them!

Soothers can run out of power: "a Ro soother has exhausted its healing power." (Note the extra space after the mob name if you're building an audio trigger.) I'm not sure if it goes away so you can tell which one needs to be replaced.

If your /loot hotkey uses the trick of /target a_ and /target an_ to try to target generic corpses, note that that won't detect the "chest of the gods". I think those drop when an enemy reaches the gods. And the chest cannot be targeted via the "Target Nearest Corpse" key until you've at least /opened it. So a customized hotkey is definitely useful.

On our successful attempt, I used the strat here, except I wasn't happy with my triangle so turned it into a square (or diamond) of archers around the gods, just 3 bruisers in the pit along with another archer. I tried to position the pit healers further from the Herald's position in case I could get them out of his aura, and in doing so left some bruisers out of their range. The bruisers quickly died, but we replaced them with more archers and the Herald's shield went down just fine. I added another archer or two near the gods and we beat down the Herald with the gods still around 160. (Level 93ish group with Pally, Shaman, Warrior, Bard, Monk, healer merc.)

Part of why I didn't have healers in range of the initial bruisers was because there's some sort of limit on how crowded they can be. Once I'd placed 6 in the pit (3 bruisers and 3 poorly placed healers) it wouldn't let me place any more. I got the message "There are too many defensive units near your position. Try placing the defensive unit further away." On the other hand, it clearly wasn't critically important.

One last caution: Any person who dies loses all their Marks.

Hadn't seen them the other 3 times we did this mission.

how stupid do these tasks get? Why would i want to waste 2 hours of my life putting up fake soldiers and trying to target chests and having an even harder time looting them due to the massive npc's standing around. Epic fail of a task.

I agree that this isn't a mission I'll want to repeat except to help someone else check it off their list, but I don't mind doing it once. As a melee class I didn't think much of the first Argath mission either, but don't mind having seen it once.

This was an interesting puzzle to work out. We eventually found the strat elsewhere on this page and more or less followed it and it worked first time, and didn't take anywhere near 2 hours. More like 15-20 minutes if you count only the successful attempt. We tinkered with it for an hour or so before that, seeing how the attackers came and how effective the defenders were.

The main problem is that, even though it's fairly fast once you're used to it, there's almost no xp except for the mission itself. Some of us netted an xp loss because of some 90% battle rezzes.

I'm glad to have it off my list, and will be happy to show guildies how to do it, but I won't be grinding this one like we did Welcome to my Nightmare.

Had great success putting 5 bruisers and 2 healers around where Herald stops, then putting 3 archers in key spots near Rallos.
Apon deaths looting chests and putting more archers near Rallos. Only took a few for the shield to be broken then the half of the group went down to kill Herald while 2 stayed up top putting more archers up.

Did this the first time tonight, noticed a few things by the time the group managed to succeed.

Archers are very good for defense. It seemed to work best when they were placed on either side of the various paths the incoming mobs took, when funneled between them the enemies died very quickly with minimal losses to the defenders.

After a lot of trial and error with breaking the named's aura, we found success using some Bruisers and several healers. If your defenses are properly set you can spare having a couple of people swarm her with Bruisers and healers to support them.
