Anniversary events tend to run from mid-March to mid-April (sometimes to mid-May) each year. They are not available during the "off season".

For an overview and list of EverQuest Anniversary events, see this quest entry.

This is one of two anniversary tasks related to killing the Mechamatic Guardian. For an outline of the Mechamatic Guardian encounter and its mechanics, see this quest entry.

This is a solo task (for which you'll need many, many friends to complete) that made its debut with EverQuest's 12th anniversary. It is expected to only remain available during the anniversary/fabled period.

It's given by Gearbie Gogglenoggin at location 1825, 2290, 122 in the Dragonscale Hills (northwest of the Citadel).

You say, 'Hail, Gearbie Gogglenoggin'

Gearbie Gogglenoggin says 'Well hello there! Isn't this a fine time to be alive! I stand here looking over this pleasant field to look at the greatest achievement of all Gnomekind. Look at it. It is beautiful! And with all the, um, work I've had done on it, some of its [lost functionality] has been restored. What a wonderful day!'

You say, 'Lost functionality?'

Gearbie Gogglenoggin says 'The Mechamatic Guardian is a machine of war, a tool of destruction! But when it fell from the fortress above it lost its direction. It has been wandering around these hills with no focus. Now I have taught it how to kill again? Sure, it's not fully functional. It can't strike with its arms, but it has most of its offensive magical abilities back! It has also lost its mystical shielding. So go [attack it]!'

You say, 'Attack it?'

Gearbie Gogglenoggin says 'Sure! Isn't that what you adventurers do? Besides, when you do the mechanics and troopers and such will come out here where you can get at them. Then you can attack them too! Won't it be fun! Then you can gather up some [things] I need and we'll all be happy!'

You say, 'What things?'

Gearbie Gogglenoggin says 'Oh, you know, things. I'll tell you what they are if you agree to [get them] for me. Will you? I have interesting plans for those things, after all.'

You say, 'I will get them.'

Gearbie Gogglenoggin says 'Well that's just great! Here's the list. I have a few things I need, just a few. Only two lists, not that big of a deal.'
You have been assigned the task 'Parts Is Parts'.
You have been assigned the task 'Maximum Capacity'.

Gearbie has asked you to collect some things. He hasn't told you what he plans to do with them, but he did specify that he needed a hard to find part, something about collecting steam energy. He hinted that this was the real reason that he wanted to stir up the defenders of the Mechamatic Guardian. He has promised some sort of reward. You'll need to hurry, though, since the adjustments he made to the Mechamatic Guardian will not last long.

This task is progressed by killing the Mechamatic Guardian in the Dragonscale Hills. Updates occur as the Guardian passes 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, and 10% health (these are the five "Recover..." steps listed below).

NOTE: You can get these "Recover..." updates in any order.

Recover a silver spring from the Mechamatic Guardian 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

As it reaches 80%, you see:

The Mechamatic Guardian smokes and groans. You smell burning oil and hot iron. An explosion sends parts flying in all directions. One of those parts lodges itself in your hair after pinging off your head. It is a delicate spring made of an alloy of silver. Despite the impact it made on your skull, it remains undamaged. You put it in your pocket, thinking that it might have value to someone.

Recover a gold an silver metallic stip from the Mechamatic Guardian 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

As it reaches 60%, you see:

You hear a great explosion and feel a wave of heat, followed closely by a cloud of dark, awful-smelling grease. You look down to discover that the passing cloud has deposited a strip of metal on your armor. It looks like it is made of alternating bands of gold and silver. You wipe it off and drop it into a pocket, suspecting that someone might find it valuable.

Recover some flexible metal hose from the Mechamatic Guardian 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

As it reaches 40%, you see:

The Mechamatic Guardian erupts in flames, parts are fired out of all of its joints as if they were deadly missiles. Luckily for you, they are not. One of those parts slaps wetly against your arm, then slides off to the ground. As you lean over to pick it up, you see that it is a length of narrow, flexible metal hose. It is covered in oil. Its design is unusual, so you keep it. Someone might find it valuable.

Recover a platinum screw from the Mechamatic Guardian 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

As it reaches 20%, you see:

You feel the explosion before you realize where it came from. The Mechamatic Guardian is enveloped in flames and smoke curls around it. Something stabs you in the shin. It burns a little too, with both heat and a sensation like really spicy food injected into your blood stream. You pull the offending item from your skin to discover a long screw covered in red oil. Or maybe it is regular oil mixed with some of your blood. You note that the screw is made entirely of platinum, so you pocket it. Someone will find it valuable.

Recover a small gold-alloyed gear fro the Mechamatic Guardian 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

As it reaches 10%, you see:

The Mechamatic Guardian siezes up with a massive groan. Its defensive shield returns, but flickers in an unstable fashion.

You see the great Guardian shudder and seize up. Parts fly everywhere, one of them landing only inches from your foot. It burns itself a few inches into the ground before cooling enough to pick up. It looks like a very small gear made of some type of gold alloy. You pick it up, guessing that Gearbie will be interested in it.

Deliver 2 Dented Whirligig to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 2 Counterlocking Nut to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 2 Super-dense Coal to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 2 Steam Coalescer to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 2 Steam-infuzed Goo to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 2 Acidized Oil to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 3 Advanced Steam Injector to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 3 Flame Igniter to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

Deliver 1 Steam Capacitor to Gearbie Gogglenoggin 0/1 (Dragonscale Hills)

These "Deliver..." items come from the adds' corpses and are pre-lootable.

- a steamwork mender primarily drops Dented Whirligig
- a steamwork reclaimer primarily drops Counterlocking Nut
- a steamwork trooper primarily drops Super-Dense Coal
- a steamwork striker primarily drops Steam Coalescer
- a steam cleaner primarily drops Steam-Infuzed Goo
- an acidic ooze primarily drops Acidized Oil
- an enhanced steamsuit primarily drops Advanced Steam Injector
- a flamesuit primarily drops Flame Igniter
- all adds can drop the Steam Capacitor, but the item is exceptionally rare

After completing all turn-ins:

Your task 'Maximum Capacity' has been updated.
Amazing! I wasn't even certain that a Steam Capacitor even existed! This will work perfectly! I have a very special reward for you, you've earned it!

Some notes from my getting this for 18 toons

So I have 18 toons. yeah yeah lol i'm old, started in beta and retired...

Anyway, :-), you can do this in Raid, which helped me.

1. you do not have to beat down the guy to get adds. They are like every 25minutes
2. There are adds in different ways, but always 1 of them is the same as such:
---Group 1 Mobs: if you stand in front of the mob, just to the left of the gap between his feed (facing his face), you will always get like.. 10-14mobs.. maybe its 15 i dunno but its a lot. They will sometimes have fire mobs, sometimes not, but its always the same spawn spot for Group 1.

Optional Additional Adds
---Option A mobs: if you are fighting Group 1, and you are facing to the right of the mob (so his feet are to you left shoulder), you will see floating mobs to your right. They will path from (what seems like) behind you to parallel with your right shoulder, and finally go active. they are always floating mobs (menders and... whatever they float, menders heal)

---Option B mobs: they will spawn in a sort of circlish around the main mob. so one will almost assured attack you if you are already fighting Group 1, or standing there waiting on respawn, so just run around and grab them

---Option C mobs: there is an NPC called Benson.. he is way way way far away from you. Again if you are facing sideways from the mob (feet on left) and you look far far away, you can see npcs moving around and some flying fairies. Sometimes you will see a group of fliers coming from there. Again like Option A mobs, they fly in a path, until they go active. until then you cannot attack them

---Option D mobs: there will be flyers and sometimes walkers that are all over the zone section you are in. They will be between you and Benson (npc mentioned above) and they fly / walk around. Make sure you look up.

My thoughts.
I swear, when I had all 18 of my toons in the zone killing i would get 1 caliper per hour. as they got them and I sent them back to the Guild Hall, it seemed to slow down.. almost as if it knew I had them on most of the raid. Up until I only needed 2 more and it took like 3-4 hours per piece, versus 1 hour. and this was with only my 18 in the zone and me killing them. I just solod them with my tank and used bard ds/ mage ds/ my ds, druid ds and they died fast.

Secondly, I actually got more from the Flying secondary mobs, versus the big clump near the boss, however the boss is where the Fire mobs spawn, so... you gotta kill that too

Anyway, took me 3 days, 7 hours for 3, 15 hours for 12, then about 7 more hours for 3.

Currently doing this on Ragefire as "in-era content". Takes a while for the participating people get get his HP down. We're noticing that the HP thresholds we're receiving updates at are actually one percent higher (81%, 61%, etc.) and it takes a bit longer to do enough to get it to the [x]0% mark.

I did this event last night.
Started with my 115 Ranger, and got it down to 93% before I decided to log in my 115 Shaman, and 111 Beastlord.
I was joined off and on by some innocent bystanders, they helped pump out some dps on Mechamatic Guardian, but I dont know their levels and they never said Hi.
I managed mobs mostly using the BST and SHM pets, while keeping DPS going with the Ranger. Sometimes the Extended Target Window would fill up and the RNG would have to clear that list.
I had 2 Healer, and 1 Caster Merc. Caster Merc was useless vs Mechamatic Guardian, but helpful on adds, your mileage may vary.
Mechamatic Guardian went into a static mode where it would not take any damge, and could not be attacked or casted upon at 85% and again at 45% for several minutes (Best guess would be 4-6 minutes). The fight to get him below 10% took me about 3 hours with zero deaths, including the bystanders.

Got 1 Steam Capacitor, 3 Flame Igniters and didnt start farming the adds until MG was at 60%, until that point it had been a range/pet tanking job, but I was getting bored and moved everyone up into melee range which attracted many more adds.

When you get this mission, you also get the add on task 'Parts Is Parts'. It is a collect/turn in task as well, but if you do not drop this task, your turn ins to Gearbie Gogglenoggin will update it before 'Maximum Capacity'.

I hope some of the info helps, the static mode took me by surprise and lasted long enough for me to wonder if the event was broken.

What I have noticed on this drop is it seems to only drop from 100 down to 60 health.

It was a much more common drop from 100 down to 80. Once I had damaged guardian down to under 80% the drop rate seemed to fall off to about 1/3 .

While not super common, I was seeing them drop once every 10-15 kills off random mobs 100-80, and every 35-30 kills from 79-60.

After guardian health was below 60% I never saw any drop although I continued to kill mobs at the same rate for a lot longer period.

This was not a once thru the cycle thing either, I cycled alts thru for augs and the mount so had to kill him down a few times, saw same sort of drop rate and had both igniters and capacitors rotting in camp. Sadly for all the people in zone afk nobody was watching OOC to come loot, and would be darned if I was going to call out in general if people not willing to invest the time to be in zone.

Sucker has a bunchaton of hps for sure, with a druid/shaman/chanter team took us FOREVER to kill it. Damage rate will massed DoTs and assorted nukes plus damage auras we were dropping him about 1% per 3-5 minutes if that was all we did.
A guildy wizard came in and helped, Dropped guardian from 60% to 10(reset) in a couple hours almost solo. He was doing as much damage per minute sustained as my box crew could accomplis in 5 minutes!

I looted one this year (2014) about a week after the event went live again. However, since then, I haven't seen one.
I suspect it's just luck of the draw (random number generator), however, I hope they didn't tweek the drop rate during one of the hot fixes.

The people complaining here are attempting to do a raid event without actually forming a proper raid. Relying on others in the zone to do all the hard work is leeching. If you can't get a raid force together to do this properly you can't complain. You should be thankful Sony allowed solo players to achieve it even if it is very difficult to do without a proper raid force. Other raid events would require you to take part in a proper raid. This one doesn't, so count your blessings.

If it was such a PITA why are there are so many people in the zone trying to complete it every year? Clearly some players are prepared to play the game and deal with the content the way it is, rather than look for quick wins and easy/leeching ways to tick off their achievements.

As for anybody complaining about the reward not being good enough, are you too lazy to read what the reward is before you commence the task or just plain stupid and ignorant? That's like buying an expensive cup of coffee and then posting the receipt for everybody to see. Why did you buy it if you knew it was so expensive? Oh, probably because you WANTED something to complain about. Seems like the same kind of people are here.

Don't like the reward, don't do the task.
Don't like how difficult it is, go back to newbie land and collect orc belts from Gfay.

It's not difficult at all honestly. Just very time-consuming. And that's fine. Again it's not how hard or long the event is. I just don't appreciate events that put players against each other, like we're all a bunch of animals that don't know how to be polite and considerate of each other. I've also done this event 2x this year from start to finish. This year it's been a little better with folks helping each other out with drops and whatnot and a band of rangers and casters tanking down the MG from afar. Sure there have been a few griefers but much better than the event was on its first year.

F.U .SOE..thanks for another annoying PITFA BS quest. This quest makes me want to slaughter every last stupid gnome in Norrath. Punting gnomes?..oh hell no they're gonna get beheaded..punting them is too nice.

Seems like to me that this task was put together at the last minute without thinking the details through. Also it seems that most only want lvl 90's in their grp for some strange reason.

Also ALOT of ninja looting goes on when the adds pop. This task is a disaster waiting to happen for most that attempt it.

Oh a side note... you get no skill-ups for anything doing this either. My warrior went through 2000 arrows and not one point in archery skill. Hummmm think that might be a slap in the face?!

Sony out did themselves on this one. Its a PITA or is it a Pooter? You decide...Smiley: disappointed

Agreed. It's like...HEY! We didn't REALLY want to code anything new into the game, cuz we are so busy with that once a year expansion release that will be riddled with bugs. So let's take an open zone that will get super laggy, add a limited amount of spawns and give everyone access to the MoB's. Instance??? To much effort! Let's have people train each other...ninja loot and start /ooc arguments!

Excellent way to encourage people to have yet another reason to leave EQ and play a better managed game...sigh. Hurray for Sony!

Honestly it's not about it being easy or hard... it's the fact that everyone was trying to do the event at the same time and we weren't working together like a normal raid event.. we were working AGAINST each other - KSing, trains, ninja looting, /ooc drama... the works. They could have made this event just as challenging but kept it instanced so it didn't bring out the worst in everyone. Honest opinion.

Not really worth arguing about now, though. The event has been around a few years now and I don't see them changing it. Just don't want to see this kind of thing repeated in later anniversary events.

I watched this from Hill on Luclin server.
Plenty of power to take Guardian down, but there wasnt a puller set for adds when they spawned.
Set pullers between the grps could split the adds between the grps easily and wouldnt have trains running over other grps.
Wizards and Necromancers could DPS the Guardian down to spawn adds while puller waits for target. Target can then be taken to grp which is out of range of AEs from Guardian, But this only would work if every1 was working together as a whole and yeah I knows thats a pipe dream.
