This group task (3-6 players) begins with Scholar Kintorom at the zone-in of The Library.

You must have completed the Feerrott and House of Thule group progression missions ("Fall of the Tae Ew" and "Welcome to My Nightmare"), his two solo tasks, and his shared task before being able to request this one.

    You say, 'Hail, Scholar Kintorom'

Scholar Kintorom says 'Now that we know the answers are in the Encyclopedia Norrathica, we must travel to the top of the library to [confront] the Head Librarian on its whereabouts. Otherwise you could [interview] scholars about my research, [locate] more books, or help me fulfill my [dream].'

    You say, 'Confront?'

Scholar Kintorom says 'I have no doubt they will try to stop us but I'm no good in a fight. I'll need you and your friends to clear the way to the head librarian. Be prepared for anything. Shall we [proceed]?

You have been assigned the task 'The Stuff of Dreams'.

Scholar Kintorom has discovered the existence of the Encyclopedia Norrathica, a book which contains all the information regarding the creation of Norrath and the Gods. He wants to confront the head librarian and claim the book for himself, so he can fulfill his dreams, but needs your help to clear the way to the top of the library.

    Say "proceed" to zone in.

    General Information

In this instance, you can expect trash mob types to hit for a max ~6,200. Nameds hit for a little more (but no flurry, no rampage, and no enrage). They may not even summon (this is not confirmed). Some nameds have an AE associated with them (if so, they are listed below).

Trash mobs are rootable/snareable, stunnable, and mezzable (even with 81-85 Enchanter mezzes).

The "Make your way..." steps (which are update locations found gradually further into the library) open up one at a time as you kill the mobs associated with them.

After triggering one of these steps, the trash mobs begin spawning one at a time. The named is permanently rooted, so its attacks are avoidable until you want to engage it. (There is an achievement for killing the named before the trash.)

NOTE: Make sure to engage the named within a minute of killing the last add spawn. If you let too much time pass without doing so, another wave of adds spawns.

Make your way toward the top of the library 0/1 (The Library)

You'll see an erudite named Curator Majda. As you approach her, this step updates and the first trash mob spawns. (The rest of the task plays out the same way.)

Kill 3 a furious sweeper 0/3 (The Library)

Kill 1 Curator Majda 0/1 (The Library)

These mobs appear to be pure melee.

Curator Majda says 'Sweeper, get them!'

She also spawns time-based adds one at a time. They're called "a dutiful librarian" and will keep spawning until six of them are up. If you kill one, another will take its place. You'll want to kill the Head Librarian while offtanking or mezzing or rooting the adds.

Head Librarian Matilda has been slain by _____!
Head Librarian Matilda falls over in defeat.

Allow Scholar Kintorom to claim the Encyclopedia Norrathica 0/1 (The Library)

Who's the Boss - Go slow!

    Key points:
    -Go slow
-Kill named first, dont insta kill
    -Duck to prevent ripose
    -take off any Damage shield
-Merc on passive when in battle
-If you ***** up, or dont get the achievement after you kill archivist Herrdar, start over.

I tried to do this many times, and i would not get the achievement, read everything here and couldnt figure it out. My kills matched below, killing only the named first, then the adds, taking off DS to prevent deaths, merc on passive when in battle, etc. I still couldnt get it, until today.

Go slower. I waited for the Head librarian to catch up to me, after i killed Ardull the Watcher, where he spawns.

Im a 120 rog, so i took off my weps, ran in and attacked the first named, waiting a little bit, then killed it, waited again an extra few seconds, and noticed the script was being slow, that may have been the problem.

Ducking helped me win this. Even with no weps, i guess you can riposte mobs to insta death, ducking prevents this.

I got the achievement after killing Archivist Herrdar, confirmed 3/21/22. Before i killed any of his musty tomes. So if Archivist Herrdar dies and you dont get the Who's The boss achievement, Drop the task, and restart.

I'm sure it's been posted, but the named mobs are NOT inactive prior to trash spawn's death. In fact, there's an achievement (Who's The boss) obtained by killing every named prior to killing their corresponding trash mobs (With the exception of the final boss, Matilda). They will not, however, assist the trash mobs, or kos you.

[There are some elitist out there who can't wait to poke fun at our difficulties. Save it. Strip your gear off and try this then come back and tell how easy it is. We have one toon over 30K HP (barely) unbuffed. Most of our gear was from three years ago. We are a group that works well together, this same gang used to do Dain #1 in (our record) 12:20 and routinely in 15-16 minutes.]

If you wipe (like we did twice) on the 1st attempt at Herrdar don't despair. Herrdar and the 15 books can be split. There are several class specific ways you might do this (trival for a bard). One way ANY class can do it would be to pull the boss away from his spawn point and die. [Preferrably away from your path back to him like up the spiral staircase or the opposite side of his spawn platform.]

Hopefully everyone has a better way to drop agro than dying but Herrdar will walk back or re-pop at his spawn point and for a short time the books (the 15) will stay up. Time is critical here, not sure of the time you have but something on the order of 60 seconds or so. Kill Herrdar then you can burn the 15 however suites you.

Beats the heck out of re-starting this thing over and over. We were ready to give up until we read Kshipper's post (thanks K!). What happened to him didn't happen to us but it was those experiments which got us headed in a direction that worked for us.

Old post, i know, but you DO have to kill Herrdar before his minions to get the achievement. Not sure any tricks to be able to do this. We had two healer mercs and the books got mad at them, so they off tanked them and healed eachother while we killed the named.

I run this mission almost daily with 2 real people - monk/bard box and SK/shaman box. We always fight all mobs with no crowd control tactics. Visage of Death/SK epic through the final named and her adds.
I've parsed the entire mission several times, so these numbers are fairly accurate.

    Breakdown:
All average hits are based on hits done to a 7000 buffed AC SK with max defensive aa's.
All max hits are based on the highest single melee hit done to any character.

Just burned through this thing with a wizard and a mage and an SK then two wizard mercs and cleric merc. T2 HoT Group gear.

For the encounters before the spiral staircase... just burn hard and fast. They only come in threes but spawn one at a time...

At the spiral staircase... this is the fun part... just AE them down... fast. Not alot of hitpoints, they don't hit hard but they will come in waves of five.

Matilda up top... save all your damage discs or AAs. As mentioned in other posts... burn then evac to zone and come back to top to loot the chest.

Mission was completed in less than 25 minutes... no deaths.

    Adds on Head Librarian Matilda
    # Jun 30 2011 at 9:25 PM Rating: Decent
The adds on Head Librarian Matilda are not time based. On each of our attempts, adds spawned in waves of 2 at 70%, 50%, and 25%.

Our group consisted of a 90 Druid, 89 Shadow Knight, 89 Beastlord, Warrior Mercenary, Cleric Mercenary, and Rogue Mercenary. We tried just burning her a few times while off-tanking the adds, but we didn't have enough DPS to finish her before we all died. We also tried off-tanking and killing the adds when they spawned, but the Cleric mercenary couldn't avoid the AE. So, our healers ran out of mana too fast.

We eventually defeated the Head Librarian by off-tanking and killing the first set of adds and then burning the rest of the way. Then, as mentioned before, we used Exodus to get out before the adds could kill us.

I recently revisited HoT progression (for a toon I just transferred). This time, I was by myself 3-boxing so really had to pay attention to shortcuts, trouble spots and such. Here are some things I observed which may be helpful.

This mission is tons of fun but has one buggy point, I will address.

This mission shouldn't be attempted without CC. With good CC its a super easy mission. I had to 3 box it with a chanter and it was really hectic at two points, so a dedicated CC-er (chanter/bard) are best.

The first four fights are very straightforward: approach a namer and they send in their helper to attack you, then a second helper, then a third. The helpers are all mezzable and they come about 45 seconds apart (I think) so you can deal with them very comfortably as they come. I ran into a buggy situation twice and had to repeat this mission three times. On all these namer+helpers encounters I saw the same thing:

For me, I would get the first helper down to about 50% when the second helper appeared so I would mezz it. When the first one got down to about 20%, the third helper appeared so I mezzed it. It appears to be timed, so your %'s may vary. Whatever it is for you, its very consistent.

After killing the three helpers, kill the namer. All four (helpers and the namer) are slowable and very easy mobs.

After each namer is dead you CAN rest and med safely. Just do so right there and don't move ahead or you will trigger the next encounter.

The first namer is down the first staircase. She is an Erudite and her helpers are animated brooms. As soon as you see the update, get ready because she is going to send the first helper after you. The helpers will come from behind her. If you stay back as soon as you see her, you will have no problem seeing them coming.

The second namer is on that same floor of the library just around a corner so don't get surprised like I did. If possible scout a head with an eyeball so you see the mob. If you are careful you can see the mob from a distance so you always have time to see the helpers coming. This one got me turned around a little because of the layout of the room but if you are careful its easy.

The next mob is a suit of armor up a level in the maze area. Because of the maze, you can't get a good line of sight on the namer and his helpers. Once you go up the stairs and touch the floor level with the maze it will trigger. Step into the room and make ONLY one turn in the maze to get into the corner. As soon as you step from staircase into the book-maze you can only go to the right. Do that. Go right and stop at the first corner. This is the best spot - you have a nice long hallway to see the helpers coming. After these three helpers are down, move through the maze and the namer is at the end of the maze. You can go up this next stair case safely without triggering the fourth encounter, but stop in the hall at the top of the staircase.

This is a nice long hallway so the best encounter of the four. Stay back a ways. You can see the namer (a book) from here. When ready move into his room, to trigger the helpers but then move BACK into the hallway so you have some distance to see them coming. The namer room is cramped.

Contrary to what was previously posted, pulling the helpers out of their room does NOT make them respawn and re-occur. You can safely pull them from the room into the hallway.

Up to this point, you will have simply killed 16 easy mobs, one at a time. It should take about 30-40 minutes (with med time after each namer) to get to here.

** This is the buggy break-and-repeat-the-event part. **

In the next room is the base of a spiral ramp that leads upstairs. The next namer you will encounter is at the top of this ramp, but his helpers will come down the ramp and fight you at the base of the ramp.

His namers are different - instead of three singles, there will be three waves of 4 or 5. These mobs hit lightly and are easy to kill but there will be a lot of them. For, me, I could get 2 killed before the next wave came so had 8 at one point.

What I did was AE mezz what I could and, using /assist, burned one down at a time. It took my druid and mage 2 nukes each to kill one, so each mob lasted about 15-20 seconds.

It was pretty hectic and chaotic simply because there were so many. I considered AE-ing the mobs but didn't want to risk it in case I couldn't kill them all fast enough. If you have a tank that can hold aggro on all these it will be easy. The trick here is spamming AE mezzes and just burning them down quick.

Once the last one is dead, quickly have your tank run up the ramp and engage the namer. Apparently this is the problem part - if you don't engage the namer right away he will RE-summon his helpers once you do engage him. And he will do this upstairs where there is less room to fight. And, he will summon the three waves MUCH more quickly so you will have 10-15 on you at a time.

If this happens to you, its MUCH easier and faster to simply restart the mission. Its tempting to try and re-do this stage but it won't work out well.

This is the problem point of this mission where everyone gets in trouble. But, its the only real problem point. As soon as the last of his 15 helpers dies, run up and engage him.

The final boss mob is up one more floor of the ramp. The round room has some walls and objects in the way which made three boxing confusing but eventually I got all my guys into one spot.

This mob will summon six helpers at the same pace as before. These can all be single mezzed. I slowed them after mezzing each so if mezz broke they wouldn't be as much trouble. Mezz-slow-Mezz-slow-Mezz-slow-Mezz-slow-Mezz-slow-Mezz-slow is what I did. I just kept cycling around re-single-mezzing them, around and around, while my other two beat down the namer.

After the namer died, what I did was killed her six helpers one at a time. This took a little time and my mezzer-mana was running low by now. I am told you can evac, which will despawn them, and then run back up to finish the mission. I didn't want to risk another buggy occurrence so I didn't try that.

If you don't want to kill the 6 adds on that final fight you can use beguiler's banishment on them, instead. Aggro will clear, and then they'll just sit there a bit, but when your mez wears off they'll depop and the mission will complete. (Make sure to invis your group, so they don't reaggro.) You've also got beguiler's directed banishment and memblur to work any that resist or whatever. Just so you get them de-aggro'd, they'll depop.

Soporofic stare mezzes up to 6 mobs at a time, so it's pretty nice for that fight. (Ocasionally she'll bug and send 8 adds, though.)

I killed the 3 "•an armored watcher" in about 1.5 minutes each .. and when I engaged Ardull the Watcher. 3 more spawned. Which lead to a pretty fast death. Never seen that before.

I think it needs to be stressed that after you kill the Compendium of Nightmares you will get the 15 Musty Books in the hallway just before the spiral staircase leading up to Archivist Herrdar, and that you have to RUSH up the spiral staircase and engage Herrdar, right after you kill that first wve of 15 books or you will get the 15 musty books again while you are fighting Herrdar. If you didn't engage the name soon enough then what will happen is that the 15 books will spawn during the Herrdar fight and the added mobs can make things much tougher. If you wipe there seems to be no way out of this problem. Each time Herrdar is engaged the extra 15 books pile on. We played with this for hours and discovered that all 15 books are aggro-linked, so you can't single them, but you can root, snare and mez them. At one point we engaged Herrdar from his right side and the books spawned on the spiral staircase (going up) and they did not aggro (weird!). When Herrdar died the Scholar would not proceed, until all 15 books were cleared. We tried to pull the books down to the zone in, but Scholar refused to move until the books were all dead.

Completed this last week, but here's some info from what I recall. Group was SK(me), Mag, Wiz, Rng, Dru and a cleric merc. All 86-90.

The spawns of 3 (brooms, skeletons, warrior things, werewolves) were all rootable by the ranger, so we used that as crowd control.

The musty tomes hit really low, I used AE aggro and had them all on me at several points, and I as barely getting hurt at all, they went down very quickly (though it was a complete mess).

Others have covered all the relevant points below.
