This was a group mission in the pre-House of Thule task line called "In The Absence of Fear". This was an Achievement granted upon completing the following tasks:

[_] Mission: Invasion of the Fearless
[_] Quest: Missing Persons
[_] Quest: Lone Wolf Hero
[_] Quest: I Want to Conquer the World
[_] Quest: Not Afraid of Ghosts
[_] Quest: Long Live the King
[_] One of the following:
___ [_] Quest: Wall Under Attack
___ [_] Quest: Destroy Nevafeer Staging
___ [_] Quest: Waylay Reinforcements
___ [_] Quest: Nevafeer Leader Attack

This group task begins with Higbin the Traveler in North Qeynos. He is found at location 350, 180, 5.

You say, 'Hail, Higbin the Traveler'

Higbin the Traveler says 'Traveler, one moment. Stop! I must speak with you! Qeynos is in grave [danger]!'

You say, 'Danger?'

Higbin the Traveler says 'I was passing through the hills on the way to Qeynos, and I made camp two nights ago in a rocky enclave near the road. In the early morning, my fire turned to ash. Cold, I awoke to the light of Luclin's gray gaze and the sound of [footfalls] on the road.'

You say, 'Footfalls?'

Higbin the Traveler says 'Chain mail clacking, metal sliding, blades glinting blue -- a line of shimmering armor floated past me. Their faces blended with the night. These were not [human] troops.'

You say, 'What were they, if not human?'

Higbin the Traveler says 'Dark elves! The Teir'Dal were on the march! I lay in silence while they passed. When I no longer could hear their boots on the road, I leaped up and ran straight for Qeynos, ignoring the road. Everyone in the city had to be [warned]!'

You say, 'Warned!'

Higbin the Traveler says 'I have convinced Corporal Lancot of the threat, and he is soon to evacuate citizens. I am sure he can use all the [help] he can get.'

You say, 'I'll help'

Higbin the Traveler says 'Thank you! [Go] to Corporal Lancot and see if you can be of assistance.'

You say, 'Ready to go!'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered North Qeynos - Invasion of the Fearless.

The following mobs can be mezzed, snared, and rooted:

a TeirDal cleric
a TeirDal warrior
a TeirDal magician
a TeirDal enchanter
a TeirDal pillager
a TeirDal raider
a TeirDal marauder
a TeirDal arsonist
a TeirDal torch wielder
a TeirDal firestarter

Speak with Corporal Lancot 0/1 (North Qeynos)

You say, 'Hail, Corporal Lancot'

Corporal Lancot says 'Thank you for your assistance! We will need as much help as we can get. We did not receive the warning of the Teir'Dal threat until too late; now the invaders are already within our walls. Many of the guards are locked in combat. Hasten to their aid! Or, if you are too much of a coward to help us, you can [leave] this city...'

TeirDal are about to attack Qeynos. Defend the city.

Save the Qeynos guards that are pinned down by the enemy attack. 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Approximately 14 warriors, clerics, enchanters, magicians to kill for update.

Speak with Guard Erabb 0/1 (North Qeynos)

You say, 'Hail, Guard Erabb'

Guard Erabb says 'You have saved my life, and the lives of my fellow guards, but the threat is not over. When we heard of the coming of the Teir'Dal, we began evacuating citizens, but we could not finish the process in time. Several of them are trapped here, and the enemy is closing in. Do not let the citizens be killed!'
Your task 'Invasion of the Fearless' has been updated.

Defend the trapped citizens 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Approximately 14 raiders, pillagers, marauders attack mobs called "a citizen." To get the update, some citizens must survive.

Speak with Guard Aerryn 0/1 (North Qeynos)

You say, 'Hail, Guard Aerryn'

Guard Aerryn says 'Thanks to you, we were able to finish evacuating the citizens. But the threat is not over. I have seen torches flashing between buildings; it appears the Teir'Dal intend to burn Qeynos to the ground. Go, kill the fire starters and put out any fires they set. If we let the fires rage for more than 10 minutes, Qeynos is surely lost. Here, take these buckets. You can fill them in any pool of water. Pour out the water on any fires you see.'

Kill the firestarters and put out the fires that have been set 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Each party member receives an Empty Bucket which must be filled before attempting to put out any fire. (Do so by going into the water and right-clicking the Empty Bucket.)

Every two minutes, a zonewide emote goes off indicating how many fires are left to be put out. There's no message for when they're all out, however you'll know you have them all once those zonewide emotes stop.

If all fires are not out within 30 minutes, you fail. In that case, you can repeat this portion of the task as it resets after 10 minutes.

In addition to the fires around the city, you also have to contend with numerous TeirDal firestarters and arsonists. All are mezzable.

Once all fires are out and all adds are dead, you can move on.

Speak with Corporal Gehnus 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Hail Guard Gehnus who is now found by the front gate.

You say, 'Hail, Guard Gehnus'

Guard Gehnus says 'The invaders have been driven from within the city, but I can see the glint of swords in the fields. Any moment now, the Teir'Dal will make their assault on the city gates. Do what you can to stop them. We will try to deal with anyone that makes it to us. If one of the Teir'Dal manages this feat, distract them, and we will finish them off.'

Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Stop mobs from entering city (20-25 mobs spawn randomly 2-3 at a time and walk towards city. You can kite them all and kill them one by one, or you can train them to the guards as they'll kill them pretty fast (although the guards can also be killed, so you'll want to keep the mobs' attention).

Speak with Corporal Lancot 0/1 (North Qeynos)

NOTE: The task locks once you hail Lancot.

You say, 'Hail, Corporal Lancot'

Corporal Lancot says 'Surely the commander of these forces is camped in the fields. We will hold the gate. Go to him and discover why the Teir'Dal have been so brash as to attack Qeynos.'

This spawns a group of Dark Elves in the field outside the gate: Commander Dendrix, Captain Tek`al, Captain Mordek, Captain Boltayar, and two trash mobs. All are mezzable and pacifiable except for Dendrix.

Speak with Commander Dendrix 0/1 (North Qeynos)

You say, 'Hail, Commander Dendrix'

Commander Dendrix says 'Do you aim to stop us? Days ago I dreamed of Antonius Bayle weeping over a heap of corpses and ash. I crept behind him and took his head. As his lifeless body fell, the pile of corpses disappeared, and in its place was Qeynos and Freeport, devoid of humans, teeming with my own kind. I knew I would bring this dream to reality. I have no fear of death or pain. And my dreams have foretold my victory!'

Hailing him opens up the following steps:

Kill 1 Captain Tek'al 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Kill 1 Captain Mordek 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Kill 1 Captain Boltayar 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Kill 1 Commander Dendrix 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Dendrix hits for a max ~5,500.

Speak with Corporal Lancot 0/1 (North Qeynos)

You say, 'Hail, Corporal Lancot'

Corporal Lancot says 'Our foes are destroyed! Please, take this small reward as my thanks. Qeynos is saved! But why would the Teir'Dal choose to attack us now, and in such small numbers? Surely something strange is happening in Norrath. I know you've felt it and seen it: the newfound confidence as you hold high your weapon, the vermin that invade our homes in broad daylight. Fear is disappearing from the land. What is the cause of all this? If you must [leave] this place, do what you can to discover the nature of our troubles.'

See what reward Corporal Lancot has given you 0/1 (North Qeynos)

An ornate chest spawns with loot. Opening the chest completes the task.

Rewards

Everyone receives experience. In the chest are two items. Known loot:

Cape of the Wailing Winds
Crystallized Ooze Ring
Drape of the Ape
Fanciful Mask of Joyful Slaying
Girdle of the Feartouched Arachnid
Golden Band of the Traveler

The entire "Absence of Fear" quest arc was the pre-release for House of Thule and, as we're now 3 expacs later, is no longer in-game. :) All the associated quests can safely be tagged as "Removed"

Note on the Fire part.

If you click a full bucket it'll tell you that you are xxx units away from the closest fire. Shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes to put out all the fires using this to triangulate fire locations.

The first time I did this mission I 3-boxed a with T6 bard, T6 wizard, T6 shaman & T5 war merc, T5 cleric merc, T5 rogue merc. Took two hours and thirty minutes. (Second time I did this with same boxes took one hour and forty minutes.) High DPS for this task is not important. A strong tank is not important. A slower is not important. Even a puller or mezzer is not important. Almost any random group of level 80s can do this mission. If a group can not tank it then kite it.

You have a total of six hours to complete the entire mission. Between steps you can rezz, buff, afk (I went to grab dinner.) There is no rush between steps. Two steps requires some urgency. Friendly mobs can not be attacked so AE spells of all kinds are fine. All mobs will only melee and not cast any spells including the "enchanter" and "cleric" mobs. Nothing summons. Almost nothing summons. Nothing sees invis. This is a walk in the park.

On the first part (Save the Qeynos guards) the mobs and guards don't damage each other. The guards will not die so take your time. A T5 tank merc can handle two of these mobs unslowed at the same time with only one T5 cleric merc healing. Three unslowed mobs on a T5 tank merc will kill it. Failure on this part is almost impossible.

The second part (Defend the trapped citizens) the citizens can die so there is some urgency to this part. If you can not DPS the mobs fast enough, agro the mobs off the citizens and kite them around the pond. Run5 is more then enough to stay ahead of them unsnared. Failure durring a wipe (all players are dead when the last citizen falls) will result in this part of the task locking. You will have to restart the entire mission. Otherwise you may re-hail to retry this step.

During the third part (Kill the firestarters and put out the fires), put out the fires first and ignore the mobs. They do not start new fires. Fires spawn indoors and outdoors at random. You only need to put out the fires in 30 minutes. You do not have to kill the mobs in that 30 minutes. Stay invised for this part. Filling your bucket and putting out fires does not break invis. The mobs in this part are linked in threes and fours and can't be single pulled. It is easier for me to kite and kill with my wizard. Root for ghetto-mezz is viable. Failure durring a wipe (all players are dead when the fires are not extinguished at the experation of the thirty minute count) will result in this part of the task locking. You will have to restart the entire mission. Otherwise you may re-hail to retry this step.

The forth part (Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate) is not hard. To get the guards to help you the mobs must be agro on someone. If a mob is un-agro'd they will walk past the guards. It might be hard for a T6 group to kill all the mobs as they come along. It is much easier to kite and let the guards kill the mobs. You must agro the mobs before they pass the guards or you risk failure. Mobs in this part are immune to run speed changes. Failure durring a wipe (all players are dead when an invader enters Qeynos) will result in this part of the task locking. You will have to restart the entire mission. Otherwise you may re-hail to retry this step. *See my post below for a no-risk strat.

(Task locks here.)

On the final part (kill Captains and Commander) the captains will summon but can be lulled, root/snared and mezzed. They camp the spot they lose agro so splitting with mezz or snare/FD is trivial. The commander will summon and is immune to lull, snare/root, mezz and may rarely wild rampage and flurry. T5 merc tank handled this with ease. Failure on this part is almost impossible.

Lockout time is rather short (6 hours?). This mission and its droppable loot is farmville for any random pick-up group of level 80+ folks with two hours to spare.

You recieve two AA for completing this mission.

P.S. This mission was fun!

If you click on the bucket you'll get a message telling you how far you are from the closest fire, fairly easy to triangulate from there.

Loved the walk through!
It made doing the mission so easy.
It took me 4 hours to do it but I really took my time.
My toons were:85 SK(T7 geared visible slots),85 SHM(some T7 gear),85 mage(very little T7 gear)and 3 T5 CLR mercs.
I just want to add:
The forth part (Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate)was insane. The mobs come fast.I tried to sit off to one side of the guards and died many times.I finally moved into the middle of the guards and the mobs were easier to manage with the guards help.

There is a safe and easy way to do the forth part (Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate).

Above the guards is a catwalk (or bridge). The entrance to the catwalk is threw a door just inside the gate and up some stairs. The strategy I use is to agro the mobs, then run past the guards and into the gate. I go through the door and up the stairs then jump off the catwalk and back into the field. The mobs will follow me threw the guards and try to go up the stairs. When I jump off the catwalk the mobs will backtrack and make a second pass through the guards.

This no-risk method will keep the mobs from ever getting close to you.

Hope this helps!

(P.S. Thank you, Yourean, for pointing out that the captains and Commander do indeed summon.)

Great write up.

One thing, though - one of the mobs (it was one of the captains) at the end DOES SUMMON. Or at least, it did for us and caught our wizard by surprise.

I assume the other captains and commander summon, but didn't bother checking - just split them up and had tank take em one at a time.

Other than that, your write up was invaluable for our non-traditional group.

Rewards are great
# Oct 02 2010 at 8:29 AM Rating: Decent
Rewards for the mission are all in 900 stat range and very nice if you don't raid. Did this with War merc cleric , shaman, Chanter and Bard..... Chanter made it possible ... many times we had three to five mobs mezzed.

One person can go put fires out while others med up.

Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate 0/1 (North Qeynos) Two people just hit the mobs as soon as they pass the corporal..(you outside city, mobs headed into city). guards will kill the invaders for you. If you hit the mob you get xp for each kill. If you just provoke them to bring them back past the corporal towards the outside of the city, you may not get xp for each kill.

Merc cleric died a lot, mobs would go straight for the cleric every time... took 4 hours the first time... now we know where the mobs are we can do it faster. There is time between when you have to Hail for the next part to rez/med up .....Have it down to 2 hours now ...

We are doing every night to gear us up.... its a challenge. Its cool to overcome it. :)

The part where the mobs spawn outside of the city and start walking towards the city, 1 person can aggro all of them and train them to the guards and each time you pass by the guards WILL attack the mobs, makes it a whole lot easier since there are like 30 of them if you dont have a chanter......
If you train the mobs to the guards, the guards WILL kill them and you WILL get the experience and UPDATE for them.

Edit to add note from Elegist, EQ Developer on 27Sep:
We've made changes, and we're preparing for a hotfix to increase the amount of time you have to find the fires to 30 minutes. Also, the fires will have actor tags on them, allowing people without particles turned on to see them. Every 2 minutes, guard Aerryn will tell you how many fires are still burning, and there won't be more than 12 up at a time. HP and attack power on all the mobs have also been lowered.

This is a group mission started by speaking with Higbin the Traveler in North Qeynos. Loc: 348.72, 180.82, 5.90

*** Hotfix ***

The following changes have been made to the Invasion of the Fearless mission to address its difficulty:

* You now have 30 minutes to put out all of the fires in Qeynos.
* Every two minutes, Guard Aerryn will let you know how much time you’ve taken as well as how many fires are still burning.
* Fires now have non-particle effects on them, so those without the ability to see particles should still see the fires.
* There will now only be a maximum of 12 fires burning at once.
* Your enemies have been weakened.
* Fire starters no longer have a chance to spawn directly on top of your group when you talk to Guard Aerryn. They also will not start fires near Guard Aerryn or in the basement of Crow's pub.

Hail Corporal Leo
Save the Guards in city (5 guards each tanking 2-4 mobs)
Hail a Guard (the final set of 4 mobs you kill it will be that guard)
Save the trapped Citizens (Mobs spawn and walk into the water near monk spot. Keep them off citizens you will have 3-8 mobs on you at a time with a decent dps group all of which hit for 3k-4k)
Hail a Guard at front gate
Kill Fire Starters and extinguish the fires in city (Pritty simple round up all the mobs in city and kite them... fill a bucket with water walk to a flame and put it out. Rinse/Repeat till all fires are put out then kill all mobs on you and you beat it)
Hail a Guard at front gate again
Stop mobs from entering city (20-25 mobs spawn randomly 2 - 3 at a time and walk twords city. Pick them up and kite them and kill them 1 by 1 till all down)
Hail Corporal again
Hail Captain something (This is the final boss. Hes lvl 85 and hits for 5500ish max (At least to my rogue whos 5700ac) he spawns with 3 other nameds and 2 adds. Once all of the bosses are dead you beat these 4 steps)

Speak with Corporal Gehnus 0/1 (North Qeynos)
Keep the invaders from reaching the city gate. 0/1 (North Qeynos)
The guards will help you on this, just agro the mobs and train them to the guards and they kill them pretty fast.
Speak with Corporal Lancot 0/1 (North Qeynos)
at This point a group of Dark Elves spawn in the field before the gate, Commander Dendrix, Captain Tek'al, Captain Mordek, Captain Boltayar, and 2 trash (think it was an enchanter and a cleric or mage) all are mezable and paciable except Dendrix.
Speak with Commander Dendrix 0/1 (North Qeynos)
did the hail from a distance and nothing agro'd but that opened up the next 4 task stages
Kill 1 Captain Tek'al 0/1 (North Qeynos)
Kill 1 Captain Mordek 0/1 (North Qeynos)
Kill 1 Captain Boltayar 0/1 (North Qeynos)
Kill 1 Commander Dendrix 0/1 (North Qeynos)
didn't bother killing the 2 trash mobs
Speak with Corporal Lancot 0/1 (North Qeynos)
See what reward Corporal Lancot has given you 0/1 (North Qeynos)

Task Beat
# Sep 27 2010 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
Pandemonium on Zek PVP just completed this task and got a Belt + Ring. Whats the email to send those to?

Task starts by killing ****** elfs attacking Qeynos guards... then Protecting citizens... then killing mobs that are starting fires in city and putting out said fires... Then holding mobs off from City Gates... last part = 4 bosses and 2 adds at once. I will look thru my log to get the exact quest parts for update. Task all together isnt hard with a good kiter and healers. Mobs hit for a max of 5500 (On a 5.7k ac rogue)

[_] Quest: Missing Persons
[_] Quest: Lone Wolf Hero
[_] Quest: I Want to Conquer the World
[_] Quest: Not Afraid of Ghosts
[_] Quest: Long Live the King

all of the above are solo quests... got to kill some small mobs in a couple but probably a low teens character could solo them.

[_] One of the following:
___ [_] Quest: Wall Under Attack
___ [_] Quest: Destroy Nevafeer Staging
___ [_] Quest: Waylay Reinforcements
___ [_] Quest: Nevafeer Leader Attack

these are group tasks and are based on the group level.. 40-50, 60-70, 70-80, 80+ it seems.
