This is a shared task that begins with Warden Jakar in Crescent Reach. He is found on the second floor at Loc -1260, -1110, 42. Head due west from the elevator and look to the right of Quartermaster Thatun.

You say, 'Hail, Warden Jakar'

Warden Jakar says 'Vasha, stranger. I am Warden Jakar. I hope you find our home to your liking. I must ask you to keep your weapons in their sheaths and your spells unspoken while in Crescent Reach. My people have too [many enemies] outside the city to wish for any inside it.'

You say, 'Many enemies?'

Warden Jakar says 'Well, I can not speak of this in great details, but a wise person will understand more than I can say. Most of our effort is spent keeping the wild animals and other dangerous locals. My duty extends beyond that simple, obvious problem. It is my task to foresee danger from a greater distance. I must deal with [matters] much more difficult.'

You say, 'What matters?'

Warden Jakar says 'I can not discuss the most intimate details with a stranger, but if you wish to help I can certainly use the assistance. Perhaps you have a preference about which enemy you face? [Goblins] perhaps? Or [gnolls]? Or if you are braver and more skilled, perhaps you will kill some [kobolds] or [orcs] for us. I can only ask the most powerful strangers to battle with the northern [giants], are you one of those? If not, that is fine. Please enjoy the safety of the city while you are here.'

You say, 'The gnolls?'

Warden Jakar says 'The Gnolls of the Steppes are cunning and dangerous. I believe that they are responsible for an [alliance] between their tribes and those of the goblins. In the last few years both the goblins and the gnolls have grown more numerous. If there is no alliance between the two, there at least has been a cessation of fighting between them. This has strengthened by both of those tribes and they might soon become a problem for Crescent Reach. You would be doing our small city a service if you could reduce the number of gnolls wondering the Steppes. If you have some friends to help however, there may be a greater task you could [help] us with.'

You say, 'What can I help with'

Warden Jakar says 'Amongst the gnolls the basic fighters are easy enough to deal with. It is their elite soldiers that support those fighters that make the battles difficult. We need someone to attack the gnolls and slay several of these elite soldiers. Without them the morale of the gnolls will falter and should make them easy prey for our soldiers.'

You say, 'An alliance?'

Warden Jakar says 'There have been reports of travelers being ambushed by groups containing both gnolls and goblins. With the two races working together it makes the Steppes a very dangerous place for anyone. Each race alone was enough to cause trouble, but they were manageable. The best [option] I see for us now is to create a rift between the two and set them against each other.'

You say, 'What option?'

Warden Jakar says 'My spies have reported a visit by a ranking gnoll shaman to the goblin camps. I suspect they are seeking to strengthen the alliance between their races. This gives us the perfect opportunity to shatter their cooperation. . .'

You have been assigned the task 'Sowing Dissent'.

Steal a runic trap from the gnolls and set it in the goblin camps 0/1 (The Steppes)

At location 1840, -1100, 188 is a groundspawn called Gnoll Rune Trap.

For those that dislike /loc: "The Gnoll Rune Trap ground spawn is in the gnoll area, inside the building closest to the far northeast corner of the zone. There are two ground spawns there, you just need one of them (lore)." -nytmare

Once in the goblin camp you have to be towards the campfire around -1460, 960. Right click the rune and back up a bit.:

Your Gnoll Rune Trap begins to glow.
Your task 'Sowing Dissent' has been updated.

Watch to make sure soblins are slain by the trap 0/1 (The Steppes)

Pull three goblins to the trap, they disappear once they reach it:

a gnollish rune trap glows softly as a bolt of light flashes into the chest of the goblin, reducing it to a blackened heap.

After the 3rd goblin dies:

a Stonemight goblin shouts 'Kills the gnolls! They trickses us!'
a Stonemight goblin shouts 'Gnolls not trap goblins again! Kills the gnolls!'
a Stonemight goblin shouts 'Death to the gnollses!'

Your task 'Sowing Dissent' has been updated.

Return to Warden Jakar with news of the chaos 0/1 (The Steppes)

You say, 'Hail, Warden Jakar'

Your task 'Sowing Dissent' has been updated.

With the goblins turning against the gnolls the situation looks hopeful. With any luck the two races will not be smart enough to work out what happened and will resume fighting each other.

You gain experience!!

Reward:
Darkfell Starstone

Note: The root effect on this item can only be used on gnolls (including those in Old Blackburrow).

Picked up the Gnoll Rune Trap and then went near fire pit and right clicked it. It acted like it was casting, but there was no graphic on the ground and I did not get a quest update. Thought it might be a problem wth the character so the other two people in group picked up the trap and tried to set it. Same results, animation of casting, but no trap set or quest update.

Is there a trick to make this happen?

Apparently the rune works in a large area. Try right clicking the rune in -1460, 960, back up a bit and pull goblins to trap, they disappear once they reach it.

one thing omitted is that you do have to be towards the campfire (not sure if the location has changed over the years but as of
just now)

plus you right click to set trap (something no one tells you)

and THEN it will update

I don't do well with locs. Can someone tell me where the trap is? I can get to what seems close but just can't find it. Please and thank you!

The Gnoll Rune Trap ground spawn is in the gnoll area, inside the building closest to the far northeast corner of the zone. There are two ground spawns there, you just need one of them (lore).

I invised and was able to pick up trap without dropping invis. You don't get credit for stealing it till you place it in the goblin camp. I dropped it behind one of the buildings up against the wall and saw the 3 goblins run in it.. Didn't have to kill anything.. easy quest.. I was grouped with 1 other person and my merc and got the quest. I did all of this while my grouped person was in POK.. They got the update as finished as well.. and wasn't even part of it lol.
NOT a solo task

This is a SHARED TASK, with a 6 hour time limit, with a 15 level max spread for party members.

Fix it, about tired of coming here and getting the wrong info, and while I get the wrong info I get spammed with useless ads.

Set up camp a small but safe distance from the goblins.
Cast the trap so that it will sit between you and any goblins you pull.
Pull `em, get them to path over the trap, they are instantly destroyed.
