Anniversary events tend to run from mid-March to mid-April (sometimes to mid-May) each year. They are not available during the "off season".

For an overview and list of EverQuest Anniversary events, see this quest entry.

This is a raid expedition that made its debut with EverQuest's 11th anniversary. It is expected to only remain available during the anniversary/fabled period.

The difficulty level of this raid is along the lines of Discord Tower.

The expedition is given by a dwarf named Karl Kranigan in the Plane of Knowledge. He's found at -245, 525, -90 (at the southern staircase entrance to the library).

    You say, 'Hail, Karl Kranigan'

Karl Kranigan says 'Hmm. I don't suppose you're [interested] in a bit of a challenge? You and a whole pile of your friends.'

You say, 'Of course I'm interested'

Karl Kranigan says 'Well then, I might have one for you. I've been building some powerful devices for the last eleven years, and I need someone to test them out. You'll need a large number of allies to even stand a chance, and I won't bother bringing you along if you don't. If you want something simple to do, seek out my [apprentices]. I hear they are looking for someone to help them with some waste of time task. If you have more guts than that, just let me know and I'll take you to my [workshop] and you can get the snot beat out of ya.'

    You say, 'Apprentices?'

Karl Kranigan says 'Aye, apprentices. I've had several over the years. Look for little gnomes with a last name of something-flinger. They're all over the place... you'll have to find 'em on your own. I have no idea what they are lookin' for, nor do I much care. I've even heard that one of my failed apprentices is poking about here in Plane of Knowledge. If you see him, make sure he knows how worthless he is.'

You say, 'What about your workshop?'

Karl Kranigan says 'Ah, yes. I've been hiding my work from any competitors. But you can be among the first to see it, if you also promise to help me test them. [Up to it]?'

You say, 'I'm up to it'

Karl Kranigan says 'Fine, then let's get to it, shall we? Just let me know when yer [ready] to go.'

    You say, 'Ready'

Karl Kranigan says 'If you say so.'

You have entered Steel Behemoth Testing Grounds.

Make your way through the tunnel and into the battleground (takes place in the "dragonscalea" map, the same as the I.R.A. and Big Bynn raids).

The event is triggered through dialogue with Karl Kranigan.

    You say, 'Hail, Karl Kranigan'

Karl Kranigan says 'Well, it seems that you were brave enough to take on my challenge after all. I guess we've proven that fools come in all shapes and sizes. If you really want to get killed, I'm happy to oblige, but I have some [rules]. If they prove too much for ya, you can always [leave].'

    You say, 'What rules?'

Karl Kranigan says 'Just a few simple ones, wouldn't want to strain yer mind too much. First, if you die, lose a limb, get terribly scarred or just wet yourself during this battle I take no responsibility. You volunteered for this, after all. Second, I'll allow that your meager flesh can't go on without rest forever. So I shall allow you one break. One. Come to me and tell me that you want a [break] and I will give you a rest, but only after you defeat the behemoth you are currently engaged with. Not that I expect you to need it, since I don't suppose you'll get past even my [oldest model]. Third, don't leave the immediate area. I have servants around here that won't take kindly to you poking around. Lastly, I suppose I'll have to offer you a reward if you manage to defeat all of my behemoths. Without it you'd probably just give up. So I will give you something if you win.'

    You say, 'Your oldest model?'

Karl Kranigan says 'I'll bring them out in order of creation. I've been at this for more than a decade, so I have several models for you to test. No doubt you will find the newer models much more interesting. If you're ready, and if you agree to my conditions, then just tell me to [start] the slaughter and I will.'

    You say, 'Ready to start!'

Karl Kranigan says 'Ah, wonderful. I suppose I'll need one of my apprentices to come along soon to mop up the blood and dispose of the mangled remains...'

Steel Behemoth shouts 'Engaging travel size mode.'

You'll have to kill 11 clockworks in total, one at a time. Each time you kill one, you'll see:

Karl Kranigan shouts 'Not bad. But wait until you see what's next!'

    ...And the next one spawns.

Karl Kranigan will give you a break (seven minutes) if you request one:

You say, 'We need a break!'

Karl Kranigan says 'So soon? Fine. Once this behemoth is done with you... er... once you defeat it, I shall allow you a short break.'

The first 10 mobs hit for a max ~11,000-13,000 or so. AE rampage (for those that have it) is mitigated to about ~5,500. The final named hits a little harder and has more hitpoints than the rest.

Amalgamated Steel Behemoth has been slain by _____!

Karl shouts, 'Well, you've defeated them all. That's a bit depressing. I've spent more than a decade designing those things. I guess I'll have to get back to the drawing board. If any of your companions are currently dead, have them speak to me when they are no longer dead and I'll offer them their [reward].'

Once the Amalgamated Steel Behemoth is killed, a reward window pops up on your screen offering many different rewards.

    You say, 'Where's my reward?'

    Hello,

So I grouped up all my alts(left most in the GH) and I had my group of 115s.

I went inside and found him, in the big room, up on the right side of the platforms. The platforms sort of meet in the middle where a low spot hits the ground. He is at the top right next to some machines.

After hailing him, and going through his messages, and saying "Start", the first mob came and then they came back to back soon as they died. The came out of the closet Tunnel to him and always the same tunnel. The mobs were not hard but they kept having more and more HP, so it was simply more damage to kill them. Although they did have some moves, they never really hurt me except #11, which did some single target thing that did in fact do about 10% damage to whatever 115 they had hit and I was fully buffered with everything except beast buff.

    Mob 1 Level 86
    Mob 2 87
    Mob 3 87
    Mob 4 87
    Mob 5 87 (had a knock back)
    Mob 6 88
Mob 7 88 (pulled people to him)
    Mob 8 88
Mob 9 88 (had a reverse ds on him)
    Mob 10 88
Mob 11 89 (did some single target thing that did some small damage to the target)

Many of them went into the air and come down. I am assuming it would have done damage to me if I wasn't 115 and geared. Super easy, took about 12-15 minutes tops.

Faction amount from Steel Behemoths rewards is +300 faction with Crusaders of Veeshan. Also +300 with Bert's Chosen. So there's a good chance the others are +300 too, but I can't say for sure.

Insanely fast raid/easy loot if you're in a guild that is handling VoA progression. Great chance to get a couple of nice augs for returning players/new members, though. The rest of the gear will most likely be rot for the guilds that can blow through this, and even for guilds that struggle a bit with it, unless you're dragging alts along for the fun.

We pulled the mobs into the north tunnel to help protect healers. This worked well, but you have to be careful. If you pull the mobs to far into the tunnel, it will leash back to the middle of the cavern and, for us the one time we let it leash, you get a crystal attendant as an add.

Key for us was having all stay in 2 tight groups Casters and melee. Stationed paladins with each group to constantly cast Splash to cure the living lava since most would miss the fact that it was on them. That and having beasts keep MGB paragon going for the heal component along with other AE/MGB heals. We also put rangers in nearly every group to hit their damage reduction spire which helps alot on the 30K AEs.

Last mob has about 18 million hit points based on us taking 2 mins to kill him and hitting 151K DPS.

Last 2 mobs do cast Phantasmal Transformation although did not have time to see what effect it was having.

If you are one of the lucky ones who dies during the final encounter. Don't forget to say "Reward" to Karl while STILL in the instance.

The Karl in Plane of Knowledge knows nothing about any rewards and once you zone out you are royally screwed out of your reward.

SOE Customer Support while not honour the reward which is just bad mojo Sony. Bad. Atleast make Karl in PoKnowledge dispense the rewards the same as the Automated Amalgamater. No more deleting your aug when you change armour, this one you have to pay to remove.
    Reward vs Death.

BTW - as long as instance is up - you can zone back in and say "reward" to Karl. Only if you let instance drop are you screwed out of the reward at all.

The event is almost a joke, until you get to the Amalgamated mob.

The most dangerous thing to watch out for is when the mob casts "Living Lava" dot spell upon someone. When you get this dot, get the heck away from the rest of the raid because it's viral.

Save yourself (well, mostly your raid) the trouble and make this audio trigger:

"Living lava flows over your body, looking for others to engulf."

When you get this emote, run your *** off in a secluded little corner.

Or you can ask your paladins to use their splash AE heal, which has a cure component. Just make sure that everyone is in range when it is cast (hint hint).

Another emote to watch out for is "Lightning Lance" (HUGE targetted AE). Make the following audio trigger:

"Lightning Steel Behemoth sends a charge of static electricity to land on YOURNAMEHERE."

Best way to avoid it is go into the zone-in tunnel.

Karl Kranigan says 'So soon? Fine. Once this behemoth is done with you... er... once you defeat it, I shall allow you a short break.'

    # Note: You say break while you are fighting the mob you want the break after, and you will get it after it is dead. The break Last 7 Minutes

    # On Win

Karl shouts, 'Well, you've defeated them all. That's a bit depressing. I've spent more than a decade designing those things. I guess I'll have to get back to the drawing board. If any of your companions are currently dead, have them speak to me when they are no longer dead and I'll offer them their [reward].'
