This is a sub-task to be completed in conjunction with its grand task, "The Grand Illusion". It begins with Phara Dar in the Field of Scale.

Upon receiving task "The Grand Illusion":

Phara Dar says 'We shall see ______. We shall see. In order to make a convincing illusion, I will need a [ribcage], a [foot], a [hand], and finally a [skull]. Once I have all 4 pieces of this skeletal puzzle, not even Ganak himself will be able to see through your disguise.'

You say, 'What about the hand?'

Phara Dar says 'The hand of a powerful necromancer will best serve this illusion. The Iksar necromancers are feared even within their own ranks. Most of Ganak's guards will not think twice about crossing you or questioning your intent with this power on your side.'

You have been assigned the task 'Idle Hands'.

Search for an Iksar Necromancer of great power 0/1 (Field of Scale)

This Necromancer is Deathwhisper Tharoff. His shade can be found in the building north east of the Cablis zone line and south west of Kurns Tower. Location: -1000, 2230. You will need to clear the mobs around him to safely hail.

You say, 'Hail, Shade of Tharoff'

Shade of Tharoff peers through you and whispers in a breathless voice, "Whom are you to disturb my [imprisonment], mortal?"

You say, 'What is the cause of your imprisonment?'

Shade of Tharoff says 'I was the greatest necromancer of my age. Legions of undead arose at my command, but it was not enough. My thirst for more power was unquenchable, leading me to the ceremony of undeath, where I could shed my mortal form. In my foolish pursuit, I lost control of the dark magic, and succumbed to the power I so desperately wanted to wield and I perished. For most this would have been the end, but those who served under me sought to control my powers even in death. And so I reside here, trapped in between realms while they hold my [earthly remains] captive.'

You say, 'Who has your earthly remains?'

Your task 'Idle Hands' has been updated.

Shade of Tharoff says 'My body, or what still remains of it, is held somewhere nearby, though I do not know where exactly. Were you able to free me from my captivity, you could do what you wish with my remains, as I will have left this plane and moved on.'

Free Deathwhisper Tharoff from his enslavement 0/1 (Field of Scale)

Head to the southeast around Kaesora and in the long building just east of Emperor Ganak's throne room. In there you will find "Tharoff's bones". Kill the guards, /open it, and /loot a skeletal hand. Take this back to Phara Dar to complete the task.

Deliver the skeletal hand of Tharoff to Phara Dal 0/1 (Field of scale)

Phara Dar says 'Well done, _____. Tharoff was truly a necromancer of great prowess. Though of Iksar blood, I am relieved that his soul is now at peace, no longer suffering his deathless imprisonment.'

Each character you are doing this quest on has to open the bone pile themselves. You can't just open it with one person and hand out the bones in adv loot or you won't get credit for freeing it.

Confirmed: NOT bugged, but you must do this...

I just completed the entire quest today and received the mask. This part of the quest is not bugged. I had my pet up and my merc up and was still able to open Tharoff's bones and here is how I did it.

    1) Got task from Phara Dar (Goes without saying!)
    2) I went to the room where Tharoff's bones are at rest and I cleared the entire room of all mobs and the guards outside the doors.
    3) Double checked to makes sure everything was dead, like a good Necro should!
    4) I targeted Tharoff's bones in the middle of the room and then typed the following in my chat window... /open (and then pressed the enter key).

Again, I typed /open after I targeted the bones.

The skull then slowly opened its jaws and I was able to loot.

    Happy hunting!

Its possible to train the mobs out and loot the hand.
But some of mobs have bad pathing, they get stucked on the wall and wouldn't get out of the house.
The puller FD and most of mobs went back to the location, except the ones sticked on the wall.
We killed those and had our puller train the mobs again, this time no more trouble and the hand get looted well.
But count on the time we wasted, if you have enough firepower just clean the room.. It prolly takes less time than doing this.

The room with the hand has had some changes done recently. No longer can anyone without the quest, open the bones. You cannot train the mobs out of the room either. They hang in the walls and will not leave. You are pretty much required to kill them all now...

You still do not have to kill the mobs in the room to loot the Skeletal Hand of Necropsy from the container. I ran the mobs out, dropped aggro, looted, and gated.

. . . and dont forget to hail the shade BEFORE you clear the room and loot the bones.

If you try to hand them in, even after hailing the shade, Phara Dar gives them back to you and no update. So off we go again to re-clear and re-loot the bones again.

Quest has to be done EXACTLY as scripted.

Found out the hard way. Thanks SoE /rude

I can agree and confirm with you Aronos has to be done in order, all quests for the mask must be done, no preloots, and tried to hand into merc and give back trick but doesn;t work so you *MUST* do it in order no skipping steps or pre-looting for any of the 5 quests.

Also an easy way to clear room if don't have the dps or what not, have one person train em out and Mage CoH you, or have somebody FD, Fade, whatever it takes if can't clear room, and person who needs it rushes in to loot as train gets pulled out, altho sometimes they will pop instantly back in room so would wait for bones to be looted b4 you do whatever it is to lose train =)

If you can get a druid with shared camo aa and a cleric with group invis to undead it makes things really easy. Cast group invis to undead first and then hit group up with camo. The camo is instant which will invis everyone and then a little later invis to undead will hit everyone in group as well. There may be other ways to reg invis and invis to undead at the same time but its easy this way when you box a druid/cleric. You can then easily talk to the shade of tharoff without worry of harassment.

As a paladin... I trained all of the mobs in the building (not including ones outside doors) and the rogue in group managed to /open and loot this item first try. We took advice from the comment below that said no mounts, familiars, etc etc. Didn't have to kill one mob!

As of 04Feb2009 this quest is still bugged. BUT....I know the problem! You cannot open Tharoff's Bones IF you have an Aura, Familiar, Pet etc active. CLICK THEM OFF and you can open/loot no prob. After MANY clearings and much forum-diving, i found this bug mentioned in an old bug report from 2008.

As always, SoE re-introduces so many old bugs when the "fix" stuff, and this is no exception. Get your hand bones now before they "fix" it again and then it will be many more months until someone re-figures it out again...

    -edit-
it is possible the bug is specific to having the Sokokor familar around, that is the only familiar that I use and i always have the model dismissed via the /pet get lost command

I'd add horses to the list of things that can bug this quest. No pets and no familiars was still bugged. Person with mount moved away, someone else was able to loot.

No pets, familiars or horses and did this successfully four times back to back.

Confirmed bugged 2/1. We cleared out the entire building, after fighting it for a while my cleric was able to open it (dont ask me how), but my SK was SOL.

    This needs to be fixed.

As of January 29th, 2009, this task seems very buggy. We cleared the entire room, including the 4 mobs guarding the front and back door. When we went to open the bones, we got the message "Cannot open bones when guards are nearby". The room was totally cleared though. It seems buggy, because sometimes we can loot the hand without any problems, but other times we clear the room 2-3 times before it will let us loot the hand. Very frustrating task, I hope Sony fixes this bug soon. Petitioned Gm today, and he told us that they were aware of the issue, and he assured me that it would be fixed. I would recommend staying away from this task in the meantime.

To the topic here, what is the result or reward for completing the quest used for? Anything in the progression or do we know? Would hate to destroy the hand bones after completing the illusion quest but I'm sure we all are running a bit low on bank space lol.

I couldn't figure out why I couldn't /open either of these piles of bones even when all the mobs had been trained away. It still said something about not being able to open while guards were near. Scouring the forums on EQplayers, I saw that people are saying that you have to /open BEFORE you get the task for the hand or the foot, run back to Phara to get the task, and THEN you can /loot. Or, if there's a kindly soul nearby without the task, you could ask them to /open it for you and allow you to loot.

The foot part is especially easy as the guard standing there don't aggro at all when you loot it. The mobs near the hand will aggro when they see you, and there is usually a see invis bonecaster wandering around in the building where the skeletal hand is found, so that one is a little harder. Still, I was able to run in without the task, /open it, got killed. Then ran back, got the task, completed the part with the Shade of Tharoff, looted the hand, got killed again. But then I just used vet rez, turned in both parts & got something like 280 chronobines at turn in. Total time for these two parts was maybe 30 minutes at the most, and that was because I had to die and run back to Field of Scale twice. If you had a cleric in group that could rez you right away, you could do the two in less than 10 minutes.

I knew there was no way I could get rid of all those bonemasters so I thought I'd take a chance with IVU & hope Preincarnation kicked in if IVU failed. It worked great! Go in the door on the north side. There was at least one non-undead mob by the west door - I saw her go in as I was scoping it out, so I guess she's not there all the time. She was staying by that door so I was far enough to be out of her aggro range. The Shade moves around - just go in the north door with IVU on and wait for him to path near enough for you to hail. Heck, you may even be able to do it without IVU from that door, as there aren't mobs right there.

This task gives 140 chronobines. I've done it with a couple of toons, and friends have done it, and it's always been that much. Same for each other part of The Grand Illusion quest, as well as the Grand Illusion itself.

Then head to the SE around Kaesora and find Tharoff's bones(they inside a building). Kill the guards, /open it, and /loot a skeletal hand. Take this back to Phara Dar to complete the task.

NOTE:: You can No longer Train the mobs away tried it many times with FD classes, Rogues nothing worked MUST kill…
