Gardern is on a balcony at +425, -70, +19, near the spell vendors.

You say, 'Hail, Gardern'

Gardern says 'I am Gardern, listed among the chosen of Solusek Ro. I hold the [lore to the staff] of Temperate Flux and the [lore] to the Weeping [Wand] - items which are highly coveted by my wizardly brethren.'

You say, 'What lore to the staff?'

Gardern says 'The staff of Temperate Flux is a boon to those who dabble in the elemental arts, for it can increase the susceptibility of a creature to both fire and cold. Are you [interested] in the [staff]?'

You say, 'I am interested in the staff.'

Gardern says 'I will craft you a staff of Temperate Flux, but you must bring me the components I require to make it. I will need a heart of fire from an inferno goblin wizard in the caverns of Solusek, a heart of frost from a goblin wizard in the caverns of Permafrost, a rod of bone from a stone skeleton by the shores of Lake Rathe and a Staff of Ro. Bring me these items, and I will make you your staff.'

Gardern needs the following items:

Heart of Fire (from Inferno Goblin Wizard in Solusek's Eye)
Heart of Frost (from Goblin Wizard in Permafrost)
Rod of Bone (from Stone Skeleton by the shores of Lake Rathetear)
Darkwood Staff (obtained from Romar Sunto through a side quest)

Hand in the four items:

Gardern says 'Well done, ______ - here is the staff of Temperate Flux. Use it with the blessings of the Temple of Solusek Ro.'

You gain experience!!

grr...

It lowers the targeted mob's saves versus fire and cold. Not a lot, but noticeably (especially for a class that can do little *except* cast DD spells ... most of which are fire- or cold-based). If you want to know how much, go to http://www.graffe.com/, click on Quests, click on the link for the staff, and click on Spoilers.
Heart of Fire
# Dec 12 2000 at 9:57 AM Rating: Default
I've got the Rod of Bone and the Staff of Ro, as I can read here the Heart of Frost should be relatively easy. I spent two hours in Sol A yesterday, killed most of the zone with a Magician friend, but no luck finding the Heart of Fire, anyone have any clues or tips, how to get hold of it?

Thanks,

Okay, as someone who actually did this quest, and did it at 25, after getting the heart of ice, the rod of bone, and a lambent stone, go into SolA, and head down to where you can zone to SolB..around here there are a number of wizzies that will drop the heart of fire about 1/3 times per kill and the exp was killer at 25, though i would recommend to have either a 29+ cleric type for rev/rez, or a 29+ druid/wiz for port/evac, and lastly, a rogue for CR, as its a pain in the ***..when we went down, 5 people died, 1 made it, and he was escorted out by a 41 rogue, who also did all the CRs for us..(personal friend, and also very well tipped). Heart of fire is by far the hardest piece to get as SolA is under hunted..as for Permafrost, get a 50+ necro/shaman/mage friend, aka anyone with a killer (smart) pet, and you can solo most of the dungon..and get some descent drops in the King Room.

Liaisa, Erudite Wizard of 7Th Hammer

3 levels in 2 days? not bad? 32, 33, and 34, aint Tollbooth guards wonderful?

Only advice is don't kill most of the zone. :-) As the other (anonymous) person said, staying near the bar area seems to be the easiest way to get a wizard to spawn (unless you have a superb tracker and can just hunt them down). The hearts are only on the wizards.

(I guess that's because it's a wizard-centric quest since it's for a wizard-only, no-drop item. Then again, the stone skeletons are Magicians, not wizards, but who ever said this game lets a little inconsistency stand in the way?)

My group cleared the bar for over two hours until *one* wizard finally showed up ... without a heart. I was lucky enough to multiquest it, so I don't know how much longer I might've had to stay. My advice: pack a lunch when you go. You're liable to stay awhile.

This one was tough. Spent about 2 hours killing everything in sight with a 53 shaman helping me until we finally found one.

However, we only killed 3 inferno wizards in this time, and it was on the third.

My advice is to hunt near the bar. Inferno wizards pop all the time there. It was camped when I tried, or I bet I'd have had one in 20 minutes.

Heheh I did the same with a level 53 Magician, still no results though, very frustrating, any luck with the Heart of Frost?

I'll go back sometime soon anyway to try again, thanks!

I think it works from about level 25 and up (that's when I've seen it work), it's not a proc though, it's a right-clickable effect. So maybe it does work but not if you wait for it to happen by itself :))

Good Luck

WEll, despite the heeing and hawing over the value of the staff, either get it or don't get it, your choice. Lets get to some good information though. Where do i find this Romar Sunto ? This is the only mention as to where to get a Staff of ro and not specifics.

Druid Use
# Aug 10 2000 at 3:24 PM Rating: Default
I have the heart of frost and the wand now, will find out soon enough. I know we can't use the rod of insidious glamour, so I doubt we can use temperate flux. But hey if we can then hopefully those rhino's will stop resisting quite as many Firestrikes.

Druids cannot use this item's effect. In a main inventory slot, I get a "Your race/class/diety cannot use this item. Oh well :)

-This quest is pretty hard to complete. At lvl 29 I have all the pieces except the Heart of Fire which drops off the Inferno Wizard(Not Warlock). SolA is a pain in the butt to navigate through. Goblin Wizards amd Shaman can see through invis and the Gnomes in the castle wont help you when your in trouble. Heart of Ice from Permafrost was easy(Invis look for thier casting message find one alone and RootBomb), Lambent Stone for the the Staff was a sinch(Hehe, just got to Rathe mountains and buy it from a merchant), I had to enlist the help of a group to kill the Stone skellis and Died here a couple times:( but I got it. I am told that the staff can be used from your inventory slot like JBoots. Every little bit helps in the fight against resists, it also give you something to do before dropping the Target that your tanks are fighting, too bad you gotta stop to cast it now.

One point: When you cast an effect on a PC or yourself, the effect is reduced by one third. So the staff actually reduces the resistance by 10. My favorite part is that it procs from an inventory slot, so you can keep wielding the Staff of the Wheel.
Staff of Flux
# Jul 09 2000 at 10:11 PM Rating: Decent
This staff is excellent. many people complain that the 6 point de-buff doesnt do anything, but they are dead wrong. at level 35+, i noticed that without the staff i was getting MANY more resists than if i used the staff. pre-35 the effect wasn't QUITE as noticeable, but was still definately present. Also, the staff is great for a range checker and pulling device, not uses to be discounted.

This staff not only gives us a little extra umph in being able to stick our spells, if you're the kiting/soloing type (which I'm not), it's even better. Using in combination with bonds of force, just keep using the Lower Elements as you flee from a monster and when it says 'out of range', you know you can wait til he is in range to get the maximum distance between you and the target for nuking without risking giants clobbering you and the like. Awesome item.
Just an opinion :)
# Jul 04 2000 at 5:10 AM Rating: Decent
I can see where Zaul is coming from as to the Staff being something of a "suck" type of an item but i will have to agree with Yaldin in that it is something that we Wizards didnt have before much like the Harvester spell and any added item or spell to help us in any way possiable is always worth it even if the stats arent that great or the spell seems to lower the SV cold and fire by about only 6 points its still a debuff that may help the MOB to take a spell for a bit more damage or to even just TAKE the spell at all, if you want a great debuff group with an Enchanter,Shaman or even a Magician but as a stand-alone the Staff is a nice little itme to have vie a farely simple quest. Take care and may Solusek Ro keep you safe :)

I'd say the quest is difficult, but the result is worth it. The heart of frost took awhile, finally a lone wizard spawned in the priest room where only 3 priests surrounded it, relatively low compared to the wizard, so a lvl 40ish or so enchanter took it out for me no questions asked while I held his spot on the archeoligist. The heart of fire took several hours though, the goblin wizards are often not alone and are very difficult I had to wait till a high lvl group finally pulled one out to the top floor of Sol A before I even stood a chance of looting it. The rod of bone and staff of ro were pretty easy to get though. The result is a staff that will forever lower your enemies defenses to the 2 most common types of wiz spells, ice and fire, so in the end I'd say the effort is worth it since the staff does have unlimited charges of a instantly cast spell that we wouldn't otherwise get.
The staff of Ro
# Jul 01 2000 at 3:59 PM Rating: Excellent
It isn't clear where the Staff of Ro comes from, so I thought I'd say that it is attained by giving Romar Sunto a Lambent Stone.

Is the Darkwood Staff the same as staff or Ro then? Because Romar is the guy you give Lambent stones to to get darkwood staff....

This quest, at least for me, took FOREVER, and the result is the Staff of the Temperate Suck, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It does have uses, but no good ones.

Can I have some of what you're smoking Zaul? This thing is great. Even though it's crap for actual debuff, it has VERY good uses. Anybody that's (quad) kiting will love these so they can check range. It's great for when you're grouping and need to remove the MoB from the cleric...just go click click click, instant aggro, mana free. It stacks with several different debuffs, and is quite nice for helping those newbies getting beat by large rats, hehe.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 11 2000 at 2:12 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you suck, it rocks! ya baby ya! groovy.
Watch for stone skeleton
# Mar 29 2001 at 2:19 PM Rating: Good
If already done that quest but just to inform people The STONE SKELETON is the hardest item to get for the quest. They are 2 lvl 25 mag that hang out together and btw if you try like I did to run and blast forget about it they dispell you and boom no more SOW at this moment your dead hehe;). So get yourself a high lvl to help you or just pull them single, the rest of the quest isnt hard and the effect on staff is quite useful!=)
