A little girl named Lucie Elron has gone missing. Her father Guard Elron, in Qeynos North, wants someone to look for her. He has already hired some citizens to search for her. It turns out she was eaten by a small gelatinous cube named Cuburt in the Qeynos Aqueducts. All now that remains of her is 'a small tattered dress'. If you find this, you may return it to either Guard Elron himself, or one of his hired men, Zamel or Endric (both found in Qeynos South).

This quest can start with any of those three people. The quest dialogue of each of the three:

Guard Elron (Qeynos North)

You say, 'Hail, Guard Elron'

Guard Elron says 'Greetings. I am sorry but I can't concentrate on my post and talk to you at the same time. Especially when I should be out searching for [Lucie].. Please excuse me.'

You say, 'Who is Lucie?'

Guard Elron says 'Lucie is my only daughter. Her mother was killed by gnolls a little over a year ago. Now Lucie is missing. Ton Firepride said he saw her playing in the south pond. I have told her a million times to stay out of the aqueducts.. She never listens.. Now I spend every free moment searching for my little girl.. If only I could find some clue to her fate.. Well, I need to get back to work. Fare well, Arctura.'

Handing in the 'a small tattered dress' to Guard Elron shows this:

Guard Elron says 'Oh dear.. no.. no.. I warned her about the aqueducts.. I warned her.. I coudn't watch her every minute of the day, could I? Oh Lucie.. Why didn't you listen to me? Here, take this. It belonged to her mother. She always said that in times of need, it gave her courage to go on.. Thank you so much for your efforts.'

Zamel (Qeynos South) (requires apprehensive Guards of Qeynos faction)

Zamel says 'Clean the [aqueducts] they tell me! Peh. I don't care how much they pay me, I am not climbing into that filth.'

You say, 'Hail, Zamel'

Zamel says 'Greetings. My name is Zamel and I have the much coveted duty of pulling sludge up out of the pools and [aqueducts] of Qeynos..'

You say, 'What aqueducts?'

Zamel says 'Aye, the aqueducts are a horrible place. I have heard rumors of horrible [beasts] who live under the city in the water and just the other day, a child playing in the water just up and disappeared!'

You say, 'What beasts?'

Zamel says 'I know nothing of what or where they may be, just rumors, friend. However, should you foolishly choose to enter the waters to brave the possibilities and return with some evidence of the [child's] fate, I would be most appreciative.'

You say, 'What child?'

Zamel says 'The daughter of one of our own guardsmen is missing. He has offered me a reward for any information about her disappearance. So, if you find out anything, let me know and I will cut you in on the reward.'

Handing in the 'a small tattered dress' to Zamel shows this:

Zamel says 'Yes. I do believe this was the child's dress. Here, take this as your share of the reward. Her father will be heartbroken...'

(No response from Endric)

Here's the dirt on this quest, for those of you looking to try it out for the first time. First, the background. I play on the Mithaniel Marr server. Eniarch started this quest as a fifth level Erudite Magician, worshipping Quellious, who had done only a little faction work in Qeynos. (Killed gnoll pups and scouts, brass ring for Wenbie's muffins, gnoll fangs a couple of times from Fippy, Unser's Glory quest for Order of Three faction.) Zamel conned Amiable to me when I turned in the dress. I'm not completely sure what happens if you're indifferent or the like, so do a bit of faction work if you want to be sure.

The entrances into the Catacombs near the mage guild, the harbor and near Zamel himself were ALL bugged. (I used /bug to report them as such, and ask that everyone else do likewise!) You could swim into them, but they did NOT zone you into the catacombs. Doing this with a low swimming skill may get you a trip back to the soulbinder if you can't swim back out before you drown. Be cautious of swimming into these holes if you have little skill. You can raise it by swimming around in the harbor near the shoreline. I had 16 in swimming when I got my first ear stud, and only 9 when I started. Be careful. I entered from the tunnel at the bottom of the pond near the monk guild in North Qeynos.

Be careful when you enter. Several times I came across "a large pirahna" meandering down the channels. He wasn't happy to see me, and he was both potentially lethal and very hard to avoid when swimming. Those of you who aren't bad guys should be wary about the shrine to Bertoxxulous in this area as well, though the Cubert spawn itself is not near it. (On your way to the spawn point, stop by the spawns for the bloated alligator, injured rat, undead knight and nesting rat. You might as well kill them for their drops, as some of them are quite good for this level. The nesting rat drops an +2 AC, +3 CHA Golden Locket, the injured rat drops a +5 hp Alligator Tooth Earring to tide you over until you've earned a golden ear stud, there's an undead knight near the injured rat who drops a +5 hp Limestone Ring and the bloated alligator drops meat and an alligator egg of unknown use. When you're done, give a newbie the alligator tooth earrings if he's not twinked. He'll thank you, and you'll gain a useful friend for later.)

Use the EQAtlas map to locate the spawn point for Cubert. Once you've successfully navigated to that point, look around, and I'll describe the layout and pathing.

North of where the Cubert spawn is called out on the map you'll see a dead end that leads into the water near the callout for exit F. This is the spot where pets get lost on occasion. It never happened to me, but be wary of this watery hole. Fleeing and injured monsters will flee down this tunnel far faster than you can swim. They'll eventually come back, if you let them run, but we don't want to lose our precious friend Cubert in there, do we?

East of the dead end, there's a bridge which crosses the water pool, and then turns north to end in a "sort of" square area. This makes a good spot to retreat to if you need a break from killing the Cubert spawns or placeholders, or in case things go ill and leave you with few hitpoints. Cubert's pathing, which I will get to in a moment, does take him through this area. Be careful, as this isn't a completely safe point to rest. Mangy rats (one of the Cubert placeholders) and Cubert himself are both agressive, and WILL attack you while you rest here. Aside from those, you're safe to rest here. The approximate location of this area, according to EQAtlas, is 250, -200.

Now for pathing. When a placeholder spawns, they will move north to the dead end and watery tunnel, then south back to the bridge, then east across the bridge out to our "safe point" area. (I believe if you let them pass, they head back to the dead-end, drop in, and swim off until they despawn, but I never tested this.) Attack them when they cross the bridge, and they have to flee farther to reach the drop-off into the water. With an earth pet it should be no trouble, though I used a water pet, myself.

Placeholders for our new best friend Cubert are the following monsters. NO placeholder carries the dress.

"gelatinous cubes" - These appear as large gel cubes and make squishy noises when they move. They did not attack unless provoked. They are limited to physical attacks, but also occasionally add a root-like effect when they hit you. These drop "trash loot", ranging from bone chips and rat whiskers to copper rings. They are larger than Cubert, but look just like him, otherwise. They are approximately levels 3 to 5 in this area of the catacombs.

"sewer rats" - Small rats, even smaller than most, and certainly smaller than the giant sewer rats wandering randomly in this area. They are also non-agressive. They're fast, and slightly more dangerous than their size might indicate, but not a real threat to a level 5 character and pet. Like the cubes, these attack physically. They drop standard rat loot, which can include valuable plague rat tails, worth one platinum from a vendor! Approximate level is 2 or 3?

"mangy rats" - Small rats, but you can pretty much let these live. They'll be killed by EVERYTHING nearby, as they attack anything and everything on sight. They're insanely agressive, and can cause disease with a bite, but the giant sewer rats and other mobs usually kill them for you, which allows you more time to rest and wait for the next placeholder. I never got time to even consider one of these before it picked a fight with a giant rat and got itself eaten.

Everything else is just fluff. Kill it if you're bored, but it won't affect the spawn of Cubert, because it's not a placeholder. (Not placeholders: Spiders, Giant Rats, Beetles, Beggars)

Now for The Man himself, our new best friend Cubert. He follows the same pathing as the placeholders, and does flee when badly wounded. This poses a problem, if you get rooted, so watch that. He attacks like a gelatinous cube, and is smaller in size than most cubes. (He's like the Mini-Me of Cubeville.) He drops "trash loot" like the cubes do, and the dress, if you get lucky. He is approximately level 3 to 5.

The dropped dress is "a small tattered dress". If you have the Identify spell (Which you probably won't at this level.) the dress will give you more information when Identified. (If you get a dress from Cubert, it's the right one.) When you get the dress, you should note that it is LORE. This means you cannot own more than one at a time. (Even in the bank!) When you get the dress therefore, your camping has ended. Use the exit marked F on the EQAtlas map, and return to Zamel in South Qeynos. Hand him the dress and make prayers to Quellious before you click "give". If you're lucky, you get the ear stud. If you're not, you get a hematite. (The hematite sells for 1gp to a vendor.) If your faction is bad, you may get jack, so con Zamel first! If your faction is REALLY bad (That is, you are Kill-On-Sight) you get severely ganked by any good guys nearby, so be careful if you're a necromancer or shadowknight trying to complete this quest!

That's it. There's an alternative quest using the dress, called Elron's Daughter but the reward is far better for this quest. Go smack that cube, and lift a Bog Juice for me while you're celebrating with your new Golden Ear Stud! (You DID buy bog juice with the money from the hematites, right?)

for those poor swimmers. 'rub' the wall facing slightly upwards. I guess oh dear god its a swimming exploit! but in a real life sense you push off the wall maybe? and or if the mob gets away run along the top where the path is.... dont swim too far out.

and technically you can own 2 lore items now. one in shared bank space. but you would have to pass the guy for turn in, to go to the bank, so its pointless. :)

anyone every tried to give the locket to the mother? or the dress and the locket? just curious.

also is there ANY +3 wis earing a low lvl can do? or just int casters?

As of 12/10/02 The quest is bugged on Sullon Zek AND it is not possible to zone in TO the sewers from South Qeynos (but it is possible to zone out to South Qeynos). Both problems have been /bugged and confirmed by guides as bugs.

I took my 5th level human Magician, PappyZ, down to hunt for the dress. I had to get a good map as those aquaducts are really complicated.

Once I located the spot I had to start killing a few things. It was the sewer rat that got the ball rolling. After the sewer rat spawned a few times a Gelatinous cube spawned. After a few G. Cubes some mangy rats spawned. Then cubert spawned.

The first time I killed cubert I got the dress. I gave it to Zamel and got a couple of silver and XP and faction. I went back down and after killing cubert about 5 more times got the dress again. This time Zamel gave me the golden stud earing.

I will plan on getting a second one as soon as I have time. My Mage went from level 5 to level 7 while I was on this quest. The nastiest mob was the giant Pirahna. He seems to make it his goal to keep PCs from getting to the Cubert spawn with all of their backside intact.

I would highly recommend printing out the maps of the aquaduct system from EQAtlas. I am not saying you could not find your way around but I will say I wondered into lots of places and got no way near the Cubert spawn spot before I had a map to reference.

I would rate this quest a 5 out of 5. Good loot, good XP, and a nice storyline.

Davidoz 36 lvl DE Mage. AKA,
PappyZ 7 lvl Human Mage
Trublok 12 lvl Barb. Warrior
Eavalaye 13 lvl DE Necro.

Did this quest yesterday on the Luclin server. I am normally on Terris thule. This quest rocks. The only thing I am dissapointed about is that I did it at level 10 and had a FEW turquoise conned Gel cubes. (so SOME xp) I am an ENCHANTER. I was seeing a weird pattern and some glitchy stuff with the place holders. Like i could kill one and one would spawn and de-spawn really quick, or poof out. or like 3 cubers in a row.

I would get *Sewer rat,sewer rat,gel cube,gel cube,mangy rat,cubert* it seemed to have the mangy rat very seldom, and it would churn out the same spawn several times in a row. The large spider AND fire beatle also seem to kind of go the same path. Another thing is the Begger would fight the mangy rat, and take it out.

Sometimes to try and force the placeholders to cycle I would not loot the body all the way. Leaving a gel cube and a mangy rat, in hopes that would force cubert to spawn.

Some of the loot os OK, its not great. the ONLY loot thats worth it down there is the dress (of course) and the plagued rats tails which for me sold for 1.7 pp. thats a lot to a poor chanter.

Ummm I found all the spawns very easy, I would stand, root, chaotic feedback and fight for a bit. Now... about the pets. its not all true. I decided to summon a pet, he made it MUCH faster, and I was taking some decent damage at times without one. (the gel cubes have this amazing and exagerated reach for attack) The trick is ROOT the mob or kill it quick and then like the one guy said.... attack somehting else fast. You will not loose your pet.

Also the dress now is LORE. you can only have one at a time. Sometimes as a reward he gave Hematite, and that was a really crappy reward. he WAS apprehensive, and after ILLUSION HUMAN and ALLIANCE he was AIMIABLE. What else can i tell you all? I DID get 2 earrings off about 5-6 dresses. The earrings ALSO now have a FOCUS EFFECT something like EXTENDED AFLICTION (I) - it seems to make my root and some other spells last longer. I HEARD it will stack, so its like i have effect focus II. Thats very nice and it IS noticable. tht makes it worth it. +6 int and a focus.

OH yea and thanks to those who told the EXACT location (under bank bridge) and info on quest. And the pet info about attacking a mob right away to get pet back. You guys rock.

Perk : SWIMMING SKILL and

~~~~~~~~~~~ PREVIOUS POST ---------
I see all these posts about pets dying. As for an enchanter I could see that. But I think in part the game conciders water another level of sorts. but as far as Necro I would not be so quick to loose my pet.
/pet back off
Makes your per Heel, (come to you) and stay there, and stop running about like an idiot.
/pet as you were
Clears all the pets previous commands. Making him usually stay. And the absolute worst case, I guess I would reclaim energy. At least get my mana back. Also like one post said here, attack something, and the game usually resets your pet.
OK. I killed cubert about 30-35 times today. Dident drop a single tattered dress. I was so frustrated. I play on the Firiona vie server. My question is Did this quest change? Or am i doing something wrong? Faction? I was camping him at LOC. 135 , -61. Does anyone know about this? Please respond if you have any idea.
I am a high elf wizard 17th season of tunare.
Zamel and earing
I did this quest today without much difficulty. I am a lvl 22 chanter and one blast of Sanity Warp would take most of them down. The entry point to the sewers on the maps on this site are wrong. I went in by the magic guilds (tag 9)and entered at point G (tag: water in bay near docks) tag on the map. After spending 15 minutes trying to figure out where I was, I found Cubert pretty easily.
Got a dress on the 6th try and the 8th try. Cubert seems to spawn about every 4th placeholder (sewer rat, mangy rat, gelataneous cube, Cubert). I did illusion human and benevolence on Zamel to raise my faction to amiable and got an earring both times. I was wearing the first one when he gave me the second.
Shortest way to Cubert is to go in by Zamel, go down the tube and immediately back up the one about a body length away. The placeholders spawn very close to there, and path there first. I like waiting at 175, -155 as I can see them coming from a reasonable distance and have time to stand.
On re-reading your post, you say you camped the docks, do u mean the docks in qeynos? if so you in the wrong zone bud - you need to be in the catacombs - read all the posts.
Trivial Loot Code
I too did the quest for 3 hours on FV server. I am a lvl 12 wiz. I got the usual stuff and kill the q 10 times or more but no dress. It was then a lvl 6-8 came along and reminded me that the TLC (Trivial Loot Code)! you will not get any magic lore or no drop items from the creature you kill unless you get exp. So he helped me get a dress. Just thought you guys should know, if your are too high in lvl, you might need to get help from a lower lvl.
TLC is not active on this monster. Did this last night at level 31 with my beastlord. Spawn time for that spot is FAST. Cubert pops about once every minute and half (approx) as long as I was killing off the other spawns...most of them 3 hit fights. Punch, kick, mob on the floor. Got the dress twice and got earrings both times for a newbie friend.
I'd estimate that I killed 8 or so Cuberts for the 2 dresses I got. They are lore so once you get one you have to zone and turn it in before going back down for another.
On Firiona Vie server the TLC is server wide. It affects all creatures in all zones. So, if the dress is an item that would be covered by the TLC then they would indeed have a problem getting it on FV server.
Losing Pets
# Apr 01 2002 at 8:54 AM Rating: Default
I have been hunting Cubert with my lvl 8 magician. I have killed him about 15 times and got 4 dresses - turned in for 2 studs, 2 hematites.
I always summon an earth elemental pet before I start fighting because of his root, but I still had a problem with my pet running off into the water after the root wears off. So, one day, while hunting down there, my pet disappears into the water, and i thought maybe he will come back if I start attacking another creature. So I turn around and start attacking a rat and then my pet jumps back out of the water and starts helping me. From then on, whenever my pet runs into the water I begin attacking something else and he always appears back next to me.
I hope this will help some people who have problems with there pets dying in the water!
Camping Info
Ok I just got done gettting my two golden ear studs and to help the time go by I kept stats. I started at 11:50 and stopped at 1:34 (not full time camping because I had to get a mule to turn in the dresses. I guess he does not want help from Erudite Necros even though most of Qeynos is Amiable ot better to me). I personally found camping at Pos 175.20 Neg 155.49 the best for me, you loose 1-2 secs before you can kill but I liked location. Your spawn was 24 sec and 26 sec per mob. In the 1 hour and 44 mins I camped I killed 98 mobs 32 Gelatinous Cubes, 35 Sewer Rats, 11 Mangy Rats and 20 Cuberts. Seems to me you get one of three spawn types evenly. 1 Sewer Rat or 2 Gel Cube or 3 Cuburt(66%)/Mangy Rat(33%). I got 6 A Small Tattered Dress(30%). I got 2 Golden Ear Studs(33%) and 4 Hemite and Snake Egg(66%) rewards. A level 2 char gets 3 yellow bubs per dress and a level 3 gets 4 blue bubs. Kinda info overload but I thought I would share.
If you are camping for cubert:
I camped this lots of times and what others say about spawning is not quite true. There are four creatures that spawn randomly, cubert; sewer rat; mangy rat and gelo cube. You only have to kill whichever one is around to force a new spawn (max 30 sec). You do not need to worry about any other creatures - no matter what others say - i dun this a lot trust me. Have fun.
Great quest for me. Went down to Qeynos Aqueducts right beside the bank. When you come out you are right beside where Cuburt spawns. So i did the right things. Summoned a Earth pet and let him kill everything. I am only lvl 7 so i ofcourse had to help my pet. Cuburt never got a chance to run because of the pet's snare spell. Took me less than 2 hours to get a few dresses. After turning in 5 dresses I got my second earing! I am so happy that this is a lower level quest. I have even heard that some lvl 15 still use these earings. Ofcourse once i get something bette the earings are going to the first Newbie Int caster i see :)
Faction
# Jan 27 2002 at 9:03 AM Rating: Default
Faction seems to make a difference with the success of the dress hand in. I was on high amiable faction with Zamel (incidentally he is on Guards of Qeynos faction) and was mostly successful with getting the earring. I then killed a couple of puny guards, went down to indifferent and got given a piece of hematite from the hand-in, several times over. I quested my guard faction back up to kindly, then warmly, (which is not so easy without angering corrupt guards) and since then have had no probs with getting the earring.
Did this easily with my lvl 10 wizard.
Cubert was there when I first came down.
Attacked him but he ran into water, all
the placeholders do suicide runs into
the water. The key thing, and I think
this is why all you other people were
taking so long to find Cubert, you have
to go kill the placeholder, not just let
it go, because in my hour of doing this
quest, if you let the placeholder go,
you have to kill like 4 more until Q
will spawn, but if you kill 2-3
placeholders in a row, he will spawn
and attack you. Pretty good quest, I
hope this helps.
Recap
All this is pretty well covered if you read all the posts here and under the Golden Ear Stud reward item, but here's everything you need to know, in one place.
Getting there:
Enter the catacombs from the pool with a bridge over it, the one which you must cross to get to the bank.
I think you always zone in pointed the same way. Swim down without turning around. There's a fork at the bottom. If you didn't turn, one's almost forward and one's behind. Go forward. Swim up and out to the right. You should be on a little spur, off a longer walkway. Turn right onto the walkway and take the first left about 10 feet away. There's a dark spot ahead of you on the floor. That's the Cuburt spawn point.
I believe the loc in the quest description is correct if that's easier. :)
Spawning Cuburt:
Cuburt or a placeholder spawns rapidly (30 sec) after the last one is killed, always at this spot.
Placeholders are: sewer rats, mangy rats, gel cubes. Ignore all the other stuff wandering the area: beggars, beetles, spiders, large and giant rats, and gel cubes that didn't spawn there.
If you dispatch them quickly the spawn rate is all the faster. I wouldn't pull them down to the far end of the walkway as one person suggested. Even at level 6 (with a good pet), I was able to hover on top of the spawn point, and still prevent anything from fleeing into the water, with an occasional break after consecutive gel cubes (retreat down the walkway to the platform at the far end). This way's much faster.
At level 8 with a pet you can own the spawn point and save a lot of time. Kill, med for 2-3 ticks, then hop up and stare fixedly at the spawn point like a bird dog, ready to attack instantly. It's fast-paced and more fun than most camps...not that I'm a camp-a-holic: this is one of the few I've done much, because I tend to hate them in general.
Completing the quest:
When Cuburt gets a dress, swim (or gate) out and hand it to Zamel by the pool where you entered. That's it! Be aware the quest reward seems very erratic. Once recently I levelled from barely 4 to nearly 8, entirely on Cuburt spawn, and never got an earring! Then I got two in a row in 15 minutes. Our family record is 5 earrings in an hour, with some very long dry spells too.
Notes:
If a mob flees into the water, you'll most likely lose your pet...they get hung up down there somewhere and poof. For me, mobs always flee on the same route, retracing your entry route into the water and past the straight-up tunnel where you came in, and stopping at the far end underwater. Sometimes you can recover the pet by swimming straight away in the other direction after the kill...away from the zone, down to the end of the platform which connects to the walkway. Sorry, don't know directions down there...usually it's a low level guy with crappy sense heading. :) But parallel the walkway to the far-end platform.
If the spawn doesn't seem to be happening, check the flee route, and then just wait a few minutes. The mangy rat attacks everything on sight. Sometimes he spawns and chases off after something. Eventually he'll die, he's kinda wimpy.
(Containing the mangy rat is another good reason to camp the spawn point very close.)
Oh: for mages the earth pet is recommended and very nice, keeping anything from even coming close to fleeing into the water.
The earrings are down from 25-30pp at first, to around 15pp on Brell...still excellent money for a young caster, to pay for his level 8 spells (after he's got a couple earrings for himself of course!) Hike to EC to sell them, you won't get that much around Qeynos most likely.
Enjoy!
I'm on FV too, and it works fine. I don't know if it has anything to do with faction, but I highly doubt it. With a wood elf druid I leveled from 5 - 7 in the sewers, snaring, healing, etc.
I have killed Cuburt more times than I can count. He dropped the dress exactly 15 of those times. I left the sewers with 7 earrings in total - I gave one to a friend, traded 2 for some wis rings, then sold the last 4 for 45pp a pair at GFay so I could buy some Wis earrings and such.
Then again, I wanted to get a pair of these to sell as a beastlord and I killed Cuburt at least 20 times and he dropped the dress twice, both times resulting in a hematite from Zamel.
