This quest begins with Capt Linarius in North Karana (on the bridge to South Karana).

You say, 'Hail, Capt Linarius'

Capt Linarius says 'Hail, traveler! You are free to rest within this keep or within any of my towers along the roads to Qeynos. My guards shall keep watch over you. While you tread upon the roads, be warned that there are [local dangers] as well as rumors of [corrupt guards].'

You say, 'What local dangers?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards report daily to me of dangers in the plains. Lately, they've been telling me of rumors of [Lord Grimrot].'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards have heard rumors of this Lord Grimrot. It is said that he is a powerful shadowknight who is raising an army of undead. Such things should be reported to the Temple of Life. Journey to Qeynos and speak with Camlend Serbold. Tell him of Lord Grimrot.'

Do as Linarius says, and journey to Qeynos. Camlend is inside the priest guild in North Qeynos.

You say, 'Hail, Camlend Serbold'

Camlend Serbold says 'I say, good to meet you, Sephira! I am Camlend Serbold. Some call me Serbold the Great. I am the leader of the righteous order of paladins which serves the Temple of Life. Together with the clerics of this temple, we defend the will of the great [Rodcet Nife] and smite all who dare to oppose us.'

You say, 'I like Rodcet Nife, he's a nice guy'

Camlend Serbold says 'Do you feel your heart beating within your chest!!? It is Rodcet Nife, the Prime Healer, whose breath keeps it in perfect rhythm. If you do not pray to His glory then I assure you, someday when your heart begins to slow, you shall be crying out loud to Rodcet Nife.'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Camlend Serbold says 'You have heard of Lord Grimrot? He is a shadowknight working with the Bloodsabers. We have word he is trying to build an army of undead. Only a powerful knight can rid the lands of Grimrot. So, did you come here to [defend life]?'

You say, 'I came here to defend life.'

Camlend Serbold says 'Then go to the Plains of Karana. Somewhere there, Lord Grimrot is hatching his little plan for the Bloodsabers. Bring me his evil scythe and his heart. It is said that upon his death, his soul will be absorbed into this weapon of darkness. Do this and be rewarded.'

Camlend Serbold says 'We must have both Lord Grimrot's scythe, Pestilence, and his misshapen heart.'

Go to South Karana. Not far from the end of the bridge is an undead camp. Lord Grimrot's placeholder is the only putrid skeleton that is standing. It always carries a cute little rusty bastard sword. Respawn is approximately 180-220 minutes.

The live version only spawns during the day, and drops two Pestilence Scythes. The one with the proc is the one you need to turn-in.

The undead version only spawns at night, and drops the Decaying Heart.

Slaying the undead version of Lord Grimrot gives you the following faction hits,

Bloodsabers -200
Guards of Qeynos +30
Opal Dark Briar - 20
Priests of Life +50
Corrupt Qeynos Guards -10

Turn in both these items:

Camlend Serbold says 'We thank you for your service. With Lord Grimrot's evil soul trapped in this scythe, all but the truly evil shadowknights would be able to wield it. I would like to present you with this as a token of our appreciation. Your devotion to life is supreme. Go now, and serve life.'

after killin putrids for some time, your faction with corrupted guards are not gonna be so good. if your going to turn in bonechips to lashun, there is an especially nasty guard by him soo WATCH OUT!! i accidently wandered in and met my doom. i am a 55 cleric and he conned dark blue to me, he first snared me and before i even knew i was getting attacked, he quadded me for 350-400 and basically that was the end of me :(. You can however invis and pass him to the platform where lashun is standing and he won't agroo you, but if you ask me, it's not worth it.

3 easy ways to fix KOS with corrupt guards:

1) goblin ear quest in highkeep
2) orc scalp quest in highpass hold
3) gnoll scalp quest in highpass hold.

Auction to buy them from the people camping the zones. You should be able to get scalps for 1pp and ears for 2pp each. Dump about 500pp into these quests, and you won't be KOS anymore. You'll also be ally in Highkeep, and higher faction with the freeport militia.

Nice part is, no factions go down, so theoretically, you could end up ally to regular and corrupt guards.
Faction fixing
# Sep 22 2002 at 11:05 AM Rating: Excellent
Being an iksar who likes to travel without everyone trying to stab me in the back, I can tell you the Highpass quests are not the fastest way to fix corrupt qeynos guard faction.

The fastest way to fix most corrupt city factions, including Qeynos and Freeport among others, is the inert potion quest in the Erudin Palace. Odd as it may sound, this is true even if you have to raise faction to do the inert potion quest.

The highpass quests are entirely dependent on drop rate of various scalps or ears, which simply dont drop fast enough for the amount you need to raise faction. The inert potion quest and any prior faction work needed to do the quest is based purely on how fast you can kill low level mobs or how fast you can move an item from one npc to another. Once you have done the faction work to do the inert potion quest, potion quest itself can take you from kos to ally with corrupt guards in 2 to 3 hours.

Well, yeah, if you actually kill the orcs/gnolls/goblins yourself.

however, if you just park a char in the zone, and log it every now and then, and auction WTB scalps/ears, you'll fill 2 backpacks up in short order.
camped for over 8hrs and still got crap!!!

You can check to see if you have enough faction to do the quest. Go to Camlend and ask him about [Lord Grimrot]. He'll ask you if you can to [defend life]. Talk to him about this and he will tell you if he trusts you with the quest or not.

I finally got my AOL and I only had to camp for 3 days to it. There are no focus effects on it one charge of Sup heal. I heard you could get it recharged would apprecitate any info on this if anyone knows. I was camping Grimrot and the live version popped right before the servers went down next morning logged into the camp and within 10 min had the skelly version and was on my way 8) I could not be happier about it even if I did just happen to luck into my Grimrots LOL

Gonna post this here because anon posting has been turned off on the page for the Aegis of Life item itself. Tryllium does some math but comes to the wrong conclusion because his facts are wrong. 1 EQ day does not equal 90 real time minutes. It equals 72 minutes (1 EQ hour = 3 minutes). If we assume that it's going to take 3 hours and 10 minutes to spawn next PH and you kill current PH at 5PM EQ time, the next PH will spawn at about 8AM EQ time.

I'm of the opinion that those who say they didn't notice that killing PH's at a specific time mattered don't quite understand what people mean when they sugget that method. They simply caught the cycle of PH spawns at the right time for both live and undead grimrot. If you were to continuously kill PHs at EXACTLY the same time, I do not think you'd see BOTH the live and undead Grimrot. You'd get one but not the other. At some point, a PH would have to be allowed to stay put until Norrath time switches from AM to PM or vice versa.

the scythe on the undead grimrot is not the one you need the one you need is nodrop it is on the live grimrot. you have to kill both of them to do this quest. by the way it took me 2 months of off and on camping to get the undead grimrot to pop. he went down fast 2 nukes and he was gone

If you kill putrids while you there, you're faction will probably be maxed before you get the two piece. This camp is way too long.

Go to BlackBurrow and kill gnoll for their fangs. Give them to Captain Tillin in the arena. And finally, give the moonstone the captain just give you to Mcneal Jocub in the Fish's Ale.

If that results in a net increas in faction at all, it will be very slow. When you turn in the gnoll fangs, you get a negative faction hit to priests of life, then a positive from the moonstone quest. Perhaps one is larger, but its still gonna take a LOT of fangs.

I started with indifferent faction to Priests of Life. Tried the gold pieces, bone chips, and wasted a LOT of time/money to get faction up to amiable.

Form there, since I couldn't yet get the quest, I went to SK, and started killing putrid skellies, while waiting for the Grimrot placeholder. I killed about 40 placeholder putrids, and wiped the rest of the camp out once or twice per pop, for the faction. You're already there, and if you can take out Grimrot, you should be able to just target them one at a time, undead nuke them, then move to the next. I could do all the putrids without getting OOM. Then med up for the next round.

I would usually camp out at this point, and come back for grimrot's next PH pop. Figure I probably killed around 200 non placeholder putrids, as well as 4 live grimrots, and one undead. I am ally to the priests of life now. That was plenty of faction to get the quest, and turn in the items for the Aegis.

BTW, I didn't need to use it, but the fastest way to get faction otherwise is the deal with the fish in qeynos. Instead of messing with making a mule, and logging on/off to loot the fish, get a friend with an open slot to make the mule, and loot his kills.

Supposedly, you don't need ally faction to get the Aegis, but if you kill enough of the putrids, you won't have to find out.
RE: Faction work

Last I checked the faction you get from gnoll fangs is:

Factions Raised:
Antonius Bayle
Guards of Qeynos
Merchants of Qeynos

Factions Lowered:
Circle of Unseen Hands
Corrupt Qeynos Guards

I could be wrong but I dont see a negative hit to Priests of Life

Quest has not changed. You have the wrong scythe. Both grimrots have always dropped the junk scythe, along with one of the no drop quest items.

You have to kill both. You got real lucky to find Undead grimrot. You should be able to get live grimrot pretty easily. I got several live grimrots and only one dead out of the 40 or so spawns I camped. Got the shield, finally.

I just happened to go by, when I noticed the undead version up with a skelly pet. I am lvl 35 pally and was buffed to 1600 hp. I killed both and didn't even have to use LH. Lol, Was close tho.
He was nice enough to drop both the Scythe and the heart. Lucky me.

In all the times I have went by there or camped him, I have never seen the live version.

Odd putrid skeleton, and more notes on this camp

I have been camping old grimrot for so long, I have started looking for odd things and patterns to see if any might have an effect on the spawn. Here are a few things I have noticed:

First, the obvious. The placeholder is the only standing PUTRID skeleton. Second, he ALWAYS drops a rusty ******* sword. Third, he is the only putrid skeleton who doesn't announce his name when he attacks you.The placeholder for ghanex drah also drops a rusty ******* sword every time. None of the other skeletons have ever dropped a rusty ******* sword (this might helpt to figure out if someone else has killed the ph, if they leave the corpse). Grimrot or placeholder spawns toward the middle of the camp, under the little tower thing without the hatlike thing on top. His target area overlaps two other putrids, so you often may kill the wrong one if you try to target and nuke. The ghanex ph spawns on the northeast side of the camp, between a tree and a fallen tower thing. A dwarf skeleton spawns on the other side of the fallen tower from ghanex, and frequently despawns immediately. Occasionally, a putrid skeleton spawns at that point, and is short like the dwarf skeleton, and drops dwarf bones. The dwarf skeleton has never dropped dwarf bones for me.

Now, for the odd one, there is one putrid skeleton that is different from the rest. He is the farthest one over, on the southwest side of the camp (opposite ghanex). My character is lvl 44, so none of the other putrid's aggro him, including Grimrot's PH. This one particular putrid, however, will always attack me if I walk too close to it. I am not sure this has any significance, but also not sure it doesn't.

Also, the spawn times for the Grimrot placeholder vary. The longest I have seen is 3hours 45minutes. The shortest was 2 hours 57 minutes. Most of the time it is around 3 hours 10 minutes. Twice, the server has gone down, for a very short period of time, less than 10 minutes. This COMPLETELY screws up the spawn time.

I have seen 3 live Grimrots and no dead, over about a 7 day period. I have not been at every spawn, since I have to work, but have killed over 30 ph, and all 3 live grimrots. I also wiped out the putrid skeletons a few times, to see if that had any effect on spawns. As far as I can see, it doesn't. Live grimrot double hits for 82max. He uses steal strength, and a lifetap. He is somewhat magic resistant. I cast retribution on him (496dd, at my level). Highest hit out of 12 times (over 3 spawns), was 412hp damage. Lowest hit was 5hp. He only completely resisted the spell once. Most of them hit for around 200-300 pts, with a few higher or lower. He harmtouches for just over 300 hp. The figure I saw before about Grimmy having 1800 hp, seems about right.

I tried soloing him once with a lvl 44 cleric. No dice, but not hard to escape. He doesn't outrun SOW, and will chase instead of sitting back and casting. I pulled him to the bridge for easy escape, and tried to root (failed), nuke (hit a couple times, for part damage), and melee. He peeled 1000hp off me (without harmtouch, he had wasted it on a passing animal, before I attacked him) before I could get him down more than 1/4 of the way, so I had to zone (I had buffed ac of 730, 1698 hp and was meleeing with a centi warhammer). He returns to the camp when you zone (which I did) or die (which I did not). With help (35 sk one time, group of 3 high 20 somethings another, and a pair of 30 somethings the third) he is very beatable.

About 1 out of every 10 spawns seems about right. got him the first time after 12 spawns, again after a similar number, and then he showed up again 5 spawns later.

Between grimrot and his placeholders, I went from amiable to ally (your faction cannot get any higher...) with priests of life, and my bloodsaber faction is now as low as possible. Iam not KOS to corrupt Qeynos yet, but dubious, and probably will be KOS by the time I finish. I did however, go to highpass, and fed the guard captains 2 stacks of orc scalps, and 2 stacks of goblin ears (inside the keep, for ears). The bone chips/2gp thing sucks. I went through over 1000gp, and 5 stacks of bone chips, to go from indifferent ot amiable. Don't waste your time doing this, unless you already have both items. Killing grimrot and Putrid skeletons seems to do the trick quite well. Once you get both items, if faction is still too low, just wipe out all the putrids for an hour or two, and you should be fine.

I am happy to say, that after 2 weeks of camping as many spawns as I can, I have finally completed this quest. Over that time, I killed 39 placeholders, 4 live grimrots, and 1 undead grimrot. I didn't kill the placeholder prior to his spawn, so I cannot verify the timed killing theory, but undead grimrot did pop at night (2am). However, one of the 4 live grimrots also popped at night. The other 3 were day pops.

Had ally faction by this time, from killing the putrids, and all the live grimrots. However, faction was not maxxed. Graphic in inventory is the same as the shiny brass shield (has hoping for something unique), and the worn graphic is similar to shiny brass as well, except with a reddish tint (not that it really matters, because it is now on my cleric's back).

Very pleased with the Aegis, but it sure seems like they should un-nerf the undead grimrot spawn rate. That was brutal.

Well, thats helpful. Someone asks, what is item A for. You reply: item B, from a different zone, is for a monk quest.

I have not found the purpose of the lore, no drop bone chips yet, however, I did discover that there is more than one type. Each of the putrid skeletons drops them, and you can have one from EACH skeleton at the same time.

Now, the bones from the dwarf putrid skeleton are for a quest in Kaladim. But they are labelled dwarf bones. I plan to get the other bones all identified (i suspect they will say _______'s bones, the name the skeleton gives you when he attacks, eg. barger, gandil the great, etc.) There is a gnome by the bridge to SK, in North Karana who asks about bone chips, but I'm not sure if they are these bone chips, becasue my faction was too low to get him to talk. I overheard him ask another pc about bone chips.

If it,s not him, maybe they correspond to the different priest or pally guilds somehow. The dwarf ones go to a guy in the Cleric guild in kaladim.

And on the 5th fish, Tunare said, let Akip be able to do the quest! Despite all this ally faction BS, after offering him the age old statement, "I came here to defend life.", he finally told me where to go, before I told HIM where to go, if ya know what I mean. Sadly, I still need to get the real scythe now. ah well, I'm not gonna camp it. I didn't camp the heart, and i only spent 4 hours on the faction max. I refuse to go insane over this quest. Of course, handing in fish corpses at 5:15am is probably insane enough already....sigh.

WOW. That's all I can say. I have heard of THE best way to improve faction, hands down, no need to go any further, this person should win a nobel prize, hehe. Here's what to do:

Make a human wiz, I don't know why a wiz, but I did, and it's easy to kill the fishies with one. Goto the temple with this guy, and kill the fish in the water. DO NOT KILL THE FISH WITH YOUR CLERIC/PALY. you have been warned. Four kills of fish by this mule made him go from indiff to KOS. Luckily, the opposite is true, too =) Simple kill the 2 fish, see if they have the scales, if so, switch back to your AoL guy (who should be at the pool) and loot the scale, now give it to . he will give you some xp, some nice gold (3-15, woot =), and most of all, the best faction changes you'll ever see in this quest. 3 fish turn ins made me go from barely warmly to kindly. This is after turning in about 100 bone chips and 200gp into Lashun to go from whatever faction is less then indiff (im tired and its late) to amiable, and then about 2000gp to get to kindly.

anyway, someone has mentioned this all before, but this is vital. save your money, they say you can't do this till yer at least amiable, probably so, but good luck to ya no matter what.

Why doesn't paladin use this shield?

Everyone who said finsiehd quest are Vicar or cleric.

I think it has great Disease resist + AC for backslot item

Since I hvae Dire wolf cloak for backslot item, I'm gonna try with my Paladin

However, I'm Warmly with High Elves for the silent watch shield.

Is this quest really worth a doing it?

I don't need two shields since I'm using Natures Defender atm (can bash with it :P)

Anyways, can anyone write detail guide about this quetion eq.castersrealm.com/pon paldin site? This quest guide in PON is really poor and can't understand a thing.
