This is one of 10 tasks to be completed in order to attain the Blessed Celestine Faycite augmentation.
This is the final task in a series of five and starts with Grom of Camp Valor in the Hills of Shade. It follows the previous task, 'The Spark of Life'. You say, 'Hail, Grom' Grom says _____! You've done it. These little sprouts are alive and well. Well, [for now] at least.' You say, 'For now?' Grom says 'Yes, for now. But you see that's what this whole thing as been about! These plants can only survive with the nourishment of the undead essence. Normally when we slay undead, their essence seeps back into the earth only to rise again. This plant actually consumes the essence to supplement its growth. A [new era] has begun, _____.' You say, 'New era?' Grom says 'You have the power to change the tide of this battle, _____. Are you ready to [do your part]?' You say, 'I will do my part' Grom says 'You must use the Undead Essence Extractor to collect enough essence to feed the plants. But beware; the essence is only attainable when the undead are in the throes of death. Now go do your best. Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid.' You have been assigned the task 'Carrion My Wayward Sprout'. At this point Grom will attempt to hand you an Undead Essence Extractor. Undead Essence Extractor LORE ITEM NO TRADE QUEST ITEM EXPENDABLE Charges: 10 Effect: Extract Undead Essence (Any Slot, Casting Time: 2.0) Recast Delay: 60 seconds, Recast Type: -1 WT: 0.8 Size: TINY Class: ALL Race: ALL Extract the essence of 10 Undead in the Hills of Shade 0/10 (Hills of Shade) In order to capture the essence you must right click the device on the undead at 4% within melee range. You cannot kill them. The following may be affected: a risen ancestor, a frenzied ancestor, a crypt guardian, a crypt ghoul, a slithering shade, (anything else?). You begin casting Extract Undead Essence. Your Undead Essence Extractor begins to glow. Your task 'Carrion My Wayward Sprout' has been updated. ______ hit a risen ancestor for 10005 points of non-melee damage. Your faction standing with Ancestors of the Crypt could not possibly get any worse. Your faction standing with Camp Valor got better. You gain party experience!! a risen ancestor's corpse utters a guttural moan as it collapses. A risen ancestor is struck by a green glow. You have slain a risen ancestor! The issue is fixed of this last February patch. The essence extractor works as outlined.
Aradune Server:

I've tried everything and cannot get essence to extract. I get the message "Your target does not meet the spell requirements. The essence whirs but does not light up." I have tried all mobs listed above (except crypt ghoul) and I get this message every time. I am literally on top of the mob at 4% or less so well within melee range but nothing works. Any ideas are welcome!

Every time I've used it on any undead with 10% or less hps, it tells me this:

Try it at 4% or less.

1. How close do you need to be to use the Extractor?
2. Does it only work at 4% or as the item states "less then 10%" ??

Within melee range is required.
Also the device states that it works on undead under 10% health, I have found however, that it works only when they are at 5% or fewer hitpoints, and only then when that is a low 5% (i.e. the game is rounding up to 5%).
Not accidentally killing them is the hard part here.

you need to be melee range to use extractor

You have to be fairly close (as in the mob's hitting distance). If you're soloing, it's hard to get the extractor off since these mobs don't run at low health.

once you finish groms last task you can bring up a quest window with all of his tasks and do any you like over again

any undead mob in the crypt should work. and the graveyard. dunno about elves/blackwaters
