This task begins with Tinmyn Cogsloose near the zone-in in Fortress Mechanotus, at +25, -1320. It will take you 1-4 hours.

    You say, 'Hail, Tinmyn Cogsloose'

Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'Mmph! Mmmmph! [Oil] Can... Errrmph!'

    You say, 'Oil?'

    Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'Oil [can]!'

    You say, 'Can!'

Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'Need... oil... talk to Sparks... Diggle... knob... mmmph... need more... oil... grrr-rrr-mmmph!'

You have been assigned the task 'Oil Cans'.

    Talk to Sparks Diggleknob

Sparks is outside a small tent not far from the quest givers, at +380, -1575. Simply hail him to get the task update.

    You say, 'Hail, Sparks Diggleknob'

Sparks Diggleknob says 'Ah yes, poor Tinmyn. He's certainly seen better days. If you want to look for oil to try to help him out, I'd suggest not straying too far from the Albatross, at least at first. See if there's any oil on the locals out in the courtyard; it's your safest chance.'

Loot Dirty Oil from Steamwork Menders (0/1)

Can of Dirty Oil drops from a steamwork mender in the zone. Give this item to Sparks.

Deliver Dirty Oil to Sparks (0/1)

Sparks Diggleknob says 'This stuff might be fine for one of Meldrath's Shaky steamworks, but it won't do for a true clockwork. Perhaps you will find what you seek from one of the steamwork troopers. Surely they supply their troopers with better oil than their menders!'

Loot Warm Oil from Steamwork Troopers (0/1)

Can of Warm Oil drops from a steamwork trooper in the zone. Give this item to Sparks.

Deliver Warm Oil to Sparks (0/1)

Sparks Diggleknob says 'Oh my, this is nasty stuff. How in the world do they work with this stuff? It seems fair to assume that most of their oil is going to be sub-par. There's one other possibility. You could check their oil rig, see if you can find any oil that they haven't ruined yet.'

Search the Oil Yards for Oil Oozes

This updates at -1575, -255, directly south of the runway that leads to the elevators in the center of the zone.

Loot three cans of Unrefined Oil from the Oil Oozes (0/3)
Kill a Wretched Oil Ooze (0/1)
Kill a Murky Oil Ooze (0/1)
Kill a Sticky Oil Ooze (0/1)

Can of Unrefined Oil drops from any of the above ooze mobs. You need three of these. When all four of the above tasks are updated, give them to Sparks unstacked.

Deliver three cans of Unrefined Oil to Sparks (0/3)
    Talk to Sparks Diggleknob.

Sparks Diggleknob says 'What's this? You've found three cans of unrefined oil, maybe I can refine this into something Tinmyn can use. There, that's good. Now I've refined some high quality oil for Tinmyn. Give it to him at once, so he can finish crafting the parts I need!'

You receive Can of High Quality Oil. Give this to Tinmyn.

Give High Quality Oil to Tinmyn (0/1)

Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'Thank you for giving me a new lease on life, friend! Now I must prepare the tools that I promised I would give to Sparks. I will need power to be able to create these tools... please bring me some Power Crystals, of the kind the Cog Marauders use as a source of energy. When you have done this, I will grant you the boons that Sparks requires.'

Loot two Cog Marauder Power Storage Crystals (0/2)

Cog Marauder Power Storage Crystals drop from a Cog Marauder to the west side of the zone. Be careful, these mobs pop two ooze adds when they're damaged below 50% health. Loot two of these crystals and give them to Tinmyn.

The Cog Marauders are level 80 and hit for a max ~3,175, single-target rampage, enrage spawn 2x "an oily ooze" at 50% health. They also have a large pool of health.

Deliver Cog Marauder Power Storage Crystals to Tinmyn (0/2)

Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'You have found some Cog Marauder Power Storage Crystals, and as I promised, I can now create the Metal Cutting Blade you will need to take back to Sparks Diggleknob. Give him this blade, and he will use it to finish repairing the Oil-Powered Gear Saw that I need!'

You receive Metal Cutting Blade. Give it to Sparks.

Deliver a Metal Cutting Blade to Sparks (0/1)

    Talk to Sparks Diggleknob

Sparks Diggleknob says 'Take this Oil-Powered Gear Saw to Tinmyn... and tell him to watch how much he uses it, it won't last long, and it will use up a lot of his oil!'

Receive Oil-Powered Gear Saw. Give it to Tinmyn.

Deliver Oil-Powered Gear Saw to Tinmyn (0/1)

Tinmyn Cogsloose says 'Thank you! This Gear Saw will help me craft new parts for the Albatross. With any luck the Albatross will be flying again soon!'

    Receive Tinmyn's Oil Can.

As only one post mentioned, the item says "Increases in power in threes based on the value of coin you are carrying." I equip this item and no stats. It's not worth trying to find out what I need to carry to get the stats listed, because as my merc gets paid, apparently you will lose the stats again.

The Marauders hit for much higher than 2100. My 79 chanter was hit for a max 3167, so don't under estimate them.
    Time consuming...but soloable

Easily soloable as an 80 Bard (13k 2.4 unbuffed) bazaar geared with 1k aa. The Oils CANNOT be prelooted, so make sure you havnt started yet. Also, bring up both of your DA songs for safe measure.

If you do this task at level 79, you can easily tell what mobs you can or cannot charm with Yowl of the Bloodmoon. For the Dirty and Warm Oil, all you have to do is charm a steamwork mob (da robotz), then send it into a bunch of his friends. When it gets low go invis, kite it, then fade and loot. Rinse and repeat. I personally did this with a group near Sootmane and Ironfoot, but it can be done the other way as well.

Next comes the oozes, which are guaranteed to be charmable. Mez one, run from the adds then swing back in to charm. Rinse and repeat for the last two. Be sure to loot these oozes as you need the No Drop items to turn in.

Now probably the most annoying part of the task is the Cog Marauders. With Cacophany 8 plus Critical Affliction 6, it took about 28 minutes to chant kite each one down with a percussion mod of 31. The way I did it was by tagging the Marauder you want to kill with Caco then chant kite it around in that area. Be careful though, the steamwork strikers that add will occasionally nuke you for 1100 damage. Use heal over time potions and whatnot to counter this (though I never dropped below 80%). Another warning, always have Selos up due to the Marauders fast run speed. Get caught and youll die or at least be near death. After you kite two (yes TWO) and loot the yellow circled power sources, you are finally done with the task (minus the turn ins for lore value).

    Congrats.

    Oil can quest for necros
    # Dec 04 2007 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
I did this whole quest solo on my necro. All the things prior to the Cog Marauders are simple to solo for a necro. The cog marauders are the only part which can cause difficulty. They can not be snared by us. But they can be pulled and outrun. Get SOE on you and your pet. There are marauders at the base of trees at the far end of the area where they spawn. One of these can be pulled solo. Get at max casting range and dot with your biggest spell. I started with Ashengate pyre. Run up the ramp of the platform which is just south at the edge of the camp and run to the far edge. As soon as cog is within range cast another dot. Then run around the edge of the platform and then down the ramp back down near the trees. When cog is in range dot him with something else. Send in the pet anytime after the first dot. Keep running up and down the ramp dotting at each end. At 50% 2 oozes spawn. Ignore them. Keep running and dotting the cog. The pet will probably be killed at this point Don't worry about it. Keep running til cog drops then FD. Takes about 10 minutes. You might pick up an extra mob or 2 while doing this. Kite them all around with the cog marauder but don't waste any mana on them. I have a mana pool of 10,400 and I would typically finish with about 10% left. I have done this 6 times with no deaths. If the platform is occupied you can run them out to the southwest of the big open space in front of the elevators. Higher chance of adds there but it will work too.

I attempted this a couple times. Some major observations.

    1. get to the tribute master and buy some Affliction Haste 6.
    2. you must have SoE
    3. get as close to raid buffed as you can.

The problem I had was the mob warping.

Ultimately I think that this would be much easier duo with a couple necros or a necro and a bard (selos)

We did majority of this from the pad for 10 people over the weekend. Take the West side of the pad. You can do the entire quest from here. Off and on we would have a mix of Warrior, Cleric, SK's, Druids, Chanter, Shammy and Necros. Some real people some bots. No Wizards to test the other snare strat.

There are roaming sets of gnomes on the pad. We ran into them after a zone reset on our 2nd day. They will cause you problems. Kill them. Luckily they do not repop.

From the pad you will find mobs lined up along the giant sprockets and two groups of four on each side of the elevators. Menders and Troopers are random spawns from these groups. Drop rates are random. We had oils drop back to back on mobs but we would also go 6 or 7 before we saw another drop. Stick with it.

Once you get to the level to explore the oil fields, invis up and run south of the elevators and the part to kill the 3 oozes will trigger.

When you run south from the elevators you will see some thin straight towers. At the bottom of these the oozes spawn. I pulled these many times. The agro range is very short here. Wait for roamers to leave and pull the oozes back to the pad. We tanked some and I soloed some.

Note: When you kill one of each of the named oozes everyone in the group gets credit for the kill.

Once you are at the stage to loot unrefined oil you can loot the unrefined oil from any ooze and get credit. The oozes that spawn off the Cog Marauders also drop an unrefined oil that will count for this stage. This worked well for us as we were cycling people in and out of the group that were at various stages of this quest.

Just west of the west side of the pad on the other side of the giant sprockets are the Cog Marauders. There are two that can be pulled single. With our DPS and the quick respawns we just cycled through those two.

Depending upon who was around we found these two tactics worked great!

First Tactic: We started tanking the Marauder. The Necros and Shammy would dot load the Marauder. When the Marauder got down to 52% the tank would start kiting the Marauder. Two oozes popped at 50%. One of the SK's would snare and pickup agro on the oozes and kite them around. Once the oozes were kiting the tank brought the Marauder back to camp and we finished him off. We then picked off the oozes one by one.

Second Tactic: We lost our tank and had to kite everything. One of the SK's kited the Marauder and built up agro. The Necros dot loaded the Marauder and the other SK's and pets chased behind. WTD pets are not that effective because the Marauder cannot be snared and runs as fast as the pets. At 52% everyone (melee and DPS) backed off Marauder to let the dots wear it down to 50% to pop the oozes. Once one of the other SK's picked up the oozes and kited them everyone resumed DPS on the Marauder. Basically repeat of above. Our Shammy finally figured out after a few deaths that he could not cast on the Marauder until the oozes were pulled away by the SK.

This will be a nice upgrade to wear when I finally hit 80!

No one has mentioned the fact that once you get the charm item you have to keep a specific amount on plat on you or the charm doesn't have any stats. This is about as dumb of a thing as Sony has ever come up with.

Duo'd the cog marauders with a wizard in my guild. Cryomancy snares them, and after that, its just a matter of nuking them down. They have roughly 400k hps, they spawn 2 oozes at 50% life, the marauders can hit for close to 5k dmg and proc a DoT which can do just under 500 dmg a tick with 35% DoT shielding, the 2 oozes can hit for up to 2100. While the maurader is immune to regular snare, Atols can snare both oozes when they spawn... just snare them, and park them out of the way with ice block. If yr left with no mana to kill the oozes after dispatching the marauder, they will despawn about a minute after their master dies.

    killing the marauders
    # Nov 23 2007 at 9:53 AM Rating: Decent
We've killed at least 44 cog marauders for ourselves and guildies. Easiest method is have a wizard kite and use instants. There is a cryomancy bug that will snare them for maybe a minute. Rest of group needs to DPS til oozes spawn
( there are usually 2-3), kite or OT oozes til dead, then back to DPS on marauder til dead. One of the most effective groups I had was 2 wizards, 2 druids and a necro. Groups were all primarily Demi/TSS raid geared.
Sometimes oozes can also spawn at 25%. Marauders, with practice, can be pulled single around the south end of the big gears. They do rampage.

This is SUPER easy! Did this with a group and we all finished inside of 4 hours. The dirty cans and warm oils are the only ones that take time. The cogs suck because only 1 drops per mob. But this quest is only 2 camps, one for the oils and one for the cogs. Now I wanna see if there is an aug that goes in this thing!
