Guard Degada has a katana slung to his back. If you say, 'What is a katana?' he unsheaths the katana and holds it before your eyes. What light there is glints off the blade. It is made of fine craftsmanship, far beyond any you have ever seen. It is surely enchanted. He tells you "When you can walk upon the searing ground and taunt death, then perhaps you also may claim one." I am told that at least some of the following are common responses from any guard, so they may not apply here: You say, 'what death' Guard Degada says 'The Goblins which inhabit the mountain ranges of Kunark are called the [Mountain Death Clan] and of all the known Goblin tribes within Kunark, they are the most organized. A few adventurers have returned to Firiona Vie with tales of a great mine in the [Frontier Mountains]. This mine is said to be the home of these gobs. They call it [Droga] or [Nurga]. You say, 'what frontier mountains' Guard Degada says 'To the Northwest, beyond swamplands, can be found the Frontier Mountain range. Many Dwarven prospectors have ventured to Kunark in search of it legendary mines and an ancient magic mining pick named Spelunker. All they shall find are the [Mountain Death Clan] and death. You say, 'what droga' Guard Degada says 'Prospectors have claimed to discover a great mine within the cliffs of the [Frontier Mountains]. It is said to be the named Droga or Nurga. Accounts vary on it's actual name. One thing all prospectors agreed upon was that it was inhabited by a blood thirsty tribe of Goblins calling themselves the [Mountain Death Clan]. Furthermore, when asked "What blood" he replys with: "It is rumored that there is a race of aqua Goblins named the Blood Gills. Adventurers have reported encountering them within a lake near the swamplands." I don't know where this goes from here.

Has anyone even tried to say "What is the Mountain Death Clan" to this guy? I have read and reread teh text above and it seems that that was the only question not asked. I'll try it if I can find him in FV. Antsy parties don't like to stop.

Folks, this is a mostly contained Kunark quest, look in the Dreadlands for the burning ground part.
"quest" solved
# Apr 15 2002 at 9:29 AM Rating: Decent
"searing ground" is a reference to burning wood.

He doesn't say he'll give you one, he says maybe you can claim on.

Chardok is reached through BW.

There are Katana's that drop in Chardok.

Isn't there a place in the basement of the Estate of Unrest -- this far into this zone is "taunting" death, no? -- where you have to walk across the lava -- that could be the searing ground part -- no? Could the Katana be a drop of some MOB past that point?
RE: death & searing ground
# Feb 25 2002 at 12:32 PM Rating: Decent
nah, the pool you are thinking of in the estate of unrest isnt lava, its blood. you can swim in it all day and not take any damage.

I was thinking he meant something in skyfire or burning woods...any ideas??

Across the searing ground and taunt death? Hmmm...Searing ground. Sounds like a desert. Ive been to the Oasis of Marr and if you ask me those Spectures sure look like DEATH to me. Has anyone thought that maybe that weapon they have might be a good sign that you TAUNTED death and lived? Not to point out the some what obvious but that sounds like a good place to start. And that Island with a Tower they hang out on seems like a very good place to check out for something, I have no idea what for, I have never been High enough to go there and live to check it out.

Happy hunting

"When you can walk upon the searing ground and taunt death, then perhaps you also may claim one."

I don't see anything here telling you he will *reward* you with one if you bring him something. What he says is, when you able to go *there* and taunt (kill) *that* you can claim it (loot it?). Means he was *there* and taunted (killed) *that* to get his. Finding out where the hell he has been might be the way. Maybe there is another NPC *there* (in same place you taunt death blah) that actually give you the quest to *claim* one. This is nuts but I don't think he will just give you one for bringing him something? He says nothing about giving one to you so :)

It's possible the quest is simply broken and people who clain they have one, found thiers on some rare spawn in area where most people won't ever get. I can say too that I have one, can anyone prove they do? :)
I have one

Not sure if this is a quest or not. Perhaps its just a hint on where to find a super cool Katana. Inside Veeshan's Peak you can find a Blued Flower Katana which is pretty nice. It's a drop off Silverwing. He says you have to walk accross searing ground (Skyfire mountains I'm assuming) Then taunt death (go into Veeshan's Peak) Veeshan's peak is one of the nastiest zones in Norrath. Here's verrant's official statement about VP.

We recommend that only the most advanced and organized players in the game even attempt to enter this zone. The customer service staff (GMs and Guides) will not assist players in any way in regards to this zone. This includes help for issues such as unrecoverable corpses (see your local Necromancer), or characters finding themselves stuck (see your local Magician), bugs, etc. The only assistance that will be offered by customer service reps in this zone are those covered by the Play Nice Policies.

Anyway, I think this guy is just telling you where to get a super cool katana but I could be wrong. Hope this helps.

Later,
Eck

well the quest is probably uber.. most kunark-based quests other than cab newbie quests are uber. there is a HUGE place in the center of the lake of ill omen.. might want to scour that zone.. try handing in one of the coins from the bloodgill, try going inside the bloodgill fortress.. may lead to something.. just hand in every lore item that you get from em.. if you can uncover anything, it's better than uncovering nothing.. i guess :)

Hi there, I spoke to these quest npcs mentioned above and it seamed to me like they where saying as much as an uber adventure that i thought I was, i haddent seen anything yet and was nothing compaired to them and the places they had been, they produced the blade and it seamed like they wanted me to prove myself to them to be able to attain one, or to go and get it myself if i thought I was some kinda fancy kunark explorer and could go anywhere. Meaning that I should go to a place of Fire, heat, or hot sand in Kunark and get one myself. You have to remember of course that these NPCs where ment to talk to high power and amature adventurers who dared enter Kunark when it first opened. This is why they speak of kunark and the zones around it in the way that they do... Also I dont think the death goblins have anything to do with it, These Two NPCs Being Avid and able explorers and adventures themselves act as information sources to learn about the zones and dangers of the land, which is why it's hard to learn the quest info from them. If you believe they hold unseen quest info, put yourself in the role of a player when Kunark just came out and thought you where all big stuff and wanted to go explore it then speak to them with the reactions you would feel, and see if they can give you more info. Asking about taunting Death only produces the random death goblin clan info. I'd have the say you either have to go get some quest items from a hot zone in Kunark and try handing them into the npc's or say you have proven yourself or something along those lines. "I have walked upon the searing ground" ect :) I dont think theres any katana like weapons that come from searing ground zones in kunark that i can think of, does anyone know If theres any quest magic, lore, type items from those hot zones which dont seam to have a quest found out yet? Also what if a notable NPC from those zones drops a weapon or armor, and this is what you have to turn in as proof? I dunno =) It's proably broken like the rest of the EQ quests LOL
Just a thought on "taunting death"
# Apr 16 2001 at 4:51 PM Rating: Default
There is a "quest" in OOT for the pally 2hs that is a harpoon-deepwater i believe- and it is gotten by asking a npc " what potion of marr" ( or something simmilar). after wich they run up the hill and attack the specteres that are there. you must protect the npc and after a few mins, she will drop the harpoon ( on the ground i beleieve) but most likely are the bloodgills. as i said, it's just a thought.
Just so you know

Hmm, walk across searing ground and taunt death... One possibility is in Oasis. The deserts leading to the tower with the spectres. What is in that tower? I have yet to find out. Otherwise, I think Skyfire.

Anybody tried the obvious and said "What Spelunker?"

Burning ground could be Burning Wood or Skyfire (blackened rock, lots o' volcanic seeming stuff.)

This one could be fun to try and solve...

DOH! 20/20 hindsight is broken right now, I dont know if I sold those Lava Stones or whatever they are that drop randomely in Skyfire mountains. I do know they are stackable, tradable, MAGIC, and only resell for 4 gold.

*crosses fingers* if I still got a few I'll hand them to him along with a Harpoon of the Depths see if either generate a response.

BTW anyone got a confermation on the Jagged Scimitar Quest? Heard ya gotta hand in the 4 foraged crystals in Skyfire to prompt the quest to handing in the 4 dragon sheilds (eep!)

you speak of lava rocks-dropped by skyash drakes in SF and Fire Giants in sol b.
the use for these is the Dwarven Enchanted Plate cultural smithing.

This isn't much of an idea, but...
# Sep 07 2000 at 12:31 AM Rating: Default
Why doesn't someone high-up kill the guard and post the stats of the Katana, if he drops it? If it ends up being a 2/50 that does nothing else, we can stop wasting our time looking for a solution.
