Help me Repair my Watch! (Level 50)

Find James the Watchmaker in the Plane of Knowledge next to the Halas stone.
He offers a task for each one of the hotzones introduced in the April 18, 2007 patch (listed here for reference). You say, 'Hail, James the Watchmaker' James the Watchmaker says, 'Hello there _____! Do you happen to have the [time]?' You say, 'The time?' James the Watchmaker says, 'Yes, the time of day. You see I usually keep a number of watches with me at all times so I always know what time it is but I recently [lost], well, all of them.' You say, 'How were they lost?' James the Watchmaker says, 'I lost them when I was travelling last week. I wanted to visit some of the places in Norrath that were special to me but I seemed to run into trouble everywhere I visited! And wouldn't you know it but everytime I stopped for a bit I managed to lose one of my [watches]!' You say, 'Watches?' James the Watchmaker says, 'That's what I said, watches! Are you hard of hearing? I don't suppose you would like to [look] for my watches? I hate not knowing what time it is! I'm sure I could find something in my backpack to interest you if you found one of my watches!' You say, 'I will look for them' This brings up a quest selector with several quests: One for each hotzone ranging from 20 to 65. Each has a very original name of: "Help me repair my watch! (Level X)", where X is between 20 and 65, in multiples of 5. The task for 50th level: Deliver 1 Copper Etched Gear #1 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Copper Etched Reinforced Rod to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Copper Etched Gear #2 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge Deliver 1 Copper Etched Gear #3 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge These gears are dropped randomly in Dranik's Scar. They may be looted prior to retrieving the task. Turn them in and choose from different hands-slot items. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Just pulling the trash mobs @ near the zone in (dragorns, noks , rats, heartpiercers) I found a total of 3 gear #1 in roughly 1 hr. Previously I had been in the same spot for about 2 hours and collected gear #2 & gear #3. So just killing as you AA/XP seems to get the parts.
Yeah, my Mage spent about 90 minutes soloing in the caves near the port from PoK, and got four AAs and all the drops for this quest killing greens and light blues. EQ is certainly running in 'easy mode' these days :).
There is different level rewards. 20 - hands reward, 25 -back reward, 30- reward for head, 35 - hand reward, 40- back reward... Not high enought to do more. The rewards go to the hot zone you found them in. You can not mix and match zones.

I talked to him with my level 52 chanter. I only got tasks upto level 40. Anyone know why??
Can you turn in the gears without accepting the task?

I just turned in the pieces and got my cloaks without having the quest beforehand
I tried to do this on the DS one- did not work.

Got the Gear 1-2 and Rod to drop everywhere.
Gear 3 only seemed to drop from the kyvs upstairs near NL zonelin

These can drop off any mob in the zone. Just depends on luck.
The Copper Etched items seem to be zone-wide drops from no particular mobs. I killed 20 to 30 mobs and got the rod, gear #1 and gear #2 (two times). Items dropped for me off of dragorns as well as rats and bats in the caves.

I have seen the drops as well on different types of mobs, the gear #1 though seems to be a bit harder to find, at least it dropped less often then the others did.
