After turnin of the strategic map of kithicor off the Ghoul Messenger to Morin Shadowbane and being rewarded with the Short Sword of Morin.

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Excellent work, ______! It is obvious that you are a highly skilled tracker and warrior. Accept this reward, my personal sword which has served me well in countless battles. Perhaps you are willing to perform [another service] on our behalf?'

You say, 'another service'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Very well then. Your help will bring us closer to solving the mystery of Kithicor! Find Bryn Fynndel in the Lesser Faydark and tell him Morin sent you. His band of elven warriors are observing the activities of the Crushbone orcs and Mistmoore dark elves. Perhaps you can help them shed some light on our plight.'

You have entered Lesser Faydark.

Bryn Fynndel is far southern part of the zone located at the Ranger Outpost /loc -280, -1260

You say, 'Hail, Bryn Fynndel'

You say, 'Morin sent me'

Bryn Fynndel says, 'Morin Shadowbane, the great ranger, sent you to assist us? A strong ranger you must be if he has sent you personally. There is a great evil stalking the land, and it has spread its tendrils into Kithicor Forest. We believe the [shadowed men] are involved with this, somehow.'

You say, 'shadowed men'

Bryn Fynndel says, 'The shadowed men have recently begun to appear, with vile purposes unknown to us. Their leader wanders these woods with a contingent of guards. Bring us his code book, and we may learn more of their plans.'

A single 'a shadowed man' (PH for Shadowman Leader) will roam East to West, or West to East at the Northern part of the zone. Kill it until Shadowman Leader spawns.

You begin tracking Shadowman Leader.
You have slain Shadowman Leader

Turn in the Shadow Code Book to Bryn

Bryn Fynndel says, 'Excellent work, _______! According to these codes, it seems the ghoul boss has been alerted to our probes now that his messenger is missing. We have a scout, Glidara Myllar, who may be in danger. Give her this note as soon as you can, she is in grave danger!'

You begin tracking Glidara Myllar.

Turn in the Warning to Glidara to Glidara Myllar

Glidara Myllar says, 'So the ghoul boss knows of our inquiries? I fear that villain not! In fact, we must find out how much information he has received. Invade the undead ruins nearby and retrieve his log. Take this ring... it will protect you from his spells. Return my ring with his log book and we will hopefully crack the mystery of Kithicor.'

One of my favorite quests (Morin's sword and Orc Impaler), and anyone who still does this quest is probably on a TLP server, and knows it like the back of their hand. But this quest deserves the attention, and in case someone wants the dialogue to reminiscence. The strats first listed above is the best way to do this quest, but the dialouge is listed in order.

no one told me when you turn in the "sealed ghoul boss book" to Morin Shadowbane that a Teir'Dal Reaver spawns. It was red to level 40 and preceeds to turn you to mush...LOL. Thank goodness the pathing is bad in kith or I would have died.

HP on ghoul boss:

I used my friends druid to kill him, 6 cast of firestrike and he was totally toast. So I guess he has max 1700 hp.

Kill the skeletons at the Undead Marker and he will spawn sooner or later...

I'm doing this quest. Long ago some kind druid let me loot the shadowed code book, I think I was level 8. It's been sitting in my locker ever since. So, I'm going to geta partner and go after the Ghoul boss. Unless anyone thinks I could handle him at level 29. Much good information in these posts. Thank you all.
WHY TO DO THIS QUEST
# Oct 18 2001 at 8:26 AM Rating: Excellent
30 posts
Why to do this quest? Range slot 3 str 4 wis. Can you think of any other quest you can solo / partner at this level that gives any stats approprate to a ranger in range item slots? I cannot.

Also While people are talking about this..

My hunting tactics are :

xp : is easy kill animals.. - snare - panic animal (from surefal gale druid guild 22nd level spell)- melie - repeat as needed till kitty/bear/puma/wolf is dead. Avoid root proc weapons as it makes the animal stop running.

items and non animals: put a root proc weapon in hand, lead with snare, melie till root procs and sticks. Back out of melie range and drop arrows at close range till root pops, just keep putting arrows in. Throw spells as desired(DOTs, NOT DDs as they like to pop the root). when root pops engage in melie again until proc pops. then fall back and heal (with Stoneskin, not your heal. More manna efficent) as needed. (yes this works in dungens too but you do need a little space)

Hope it helps

Shadow Leader
# Oct 05 2001 at 4:26 PM Rating: Decent
I just finished getting the Shadowed Codebook. Took me 4 1/2 hours to get the Shadow Leader to spawn. The Shadowman cleric placeholder is on a 22 minute timer. He always spawns at 1800, -400 as does the leader.

The ghoul boss is at the undead marker, he spawned for me on the upper ring. Between him and the skeleton or zombie placeholders it was about a 6 minute spawn, the GB was about the fifth spawn. The shadowed man leader is another story, I went to the location 1800, -400 and did find the PH, one cleric type shadowed man (look for a floating blue sceptre) but this is close to the pathing of brownie scouts so make sure you stay on the gfay zone side of that loc. Brownie scouts did assist the shadowed man when I was fighting him near one. Seems to be just over 20 minutes on the spawn, haven't seen the leader yet after 6 PHs. The post below is right, the shadowed man runs fast but he stops next to the little tree and buffs, not sure if the leader would since he should be a fighter type. I started by rotating from the GB PH then checking track for the shadow man PH who wanders the north zone line between the brownie camp and the gfay zone. I always got him on radar from the undead marker but now that I have the GB codebook I just sit at 1800 by -400 and wait on the shadowed man. BTW Bracken Underbrush, who is the lower level version of Thistle, did spawn for me once very close to the shadow man spawn point, he wasn't on the shadowed man spawn cycle though.
A little Help
# Jul 14 2001 at 7:33 PM Rating: Decent
The average time on this quest is short by about 3-4 hours for me. The problem was getting the ShadowMan leader to spawn. The technique I used was to hunt down the wandering cleric. and then sit near 1800, -400 and wait for the next pop. After about 10 hours of camping one day. I came back the next day and killed him and the shadowman leader popped up. The place where the guy pops is this little valley(somewhat) with a tree. I noticed he stops for a brief moment to cast a spell, and this is your time to get him before he runs off, because he moves FAST. On another note, it might make this easier if you rotate the spawns going from the undead marker to the spawn point for shadowman leader, makes it go ALOT faster. Good luck for all you rangers out there. At level 39, the ghoul lord posed a problem, but the shadowman leader was a cakewalk. Just have pacience, and the orc impalier will be yours.

I saw the Boss spawn and knew he was a semi rare spawn but didn't know it was for a RANGER ONLY quest. Needless to day I killed him last night and got the book for nothing :o( As a 35 Druid he was really tough, took me to OOM and melee'd him to finish with 3 bars of health. Liked to resist roots though.

I feel sorry for all of you rangers who have actually camped this when I got it for barely 1/2 hour camping a druid Quest.
Pretty easy, considering...
# Apr 30 2001 at 6:22 PM Rating: Excellent
Did this quest twice in one day (accidentally gave ring and ghoul book to bryn).

As mentioned, wandering shadowman who spawns at approx 1800, -400 is PH for the shadowman leader. PH is ALWAYS a cleric, lvl 24-25, and much harder than the leader if you're a ranger. Solo'd him and the leader fairly easily at lvl 36 (ranger).

Ghoul Boss spawns at the undead marker (approx 0, -2200), and was a litle tougher than the leader, but not as hard as the cleric PH imho. Again, easily solo'd at lvl 36. Just pull with swarm, melee until swarm wears off, root and reswarm, heal if needed, med until root wears off. There are 4 spawns at undead marker, two on the marked itself. Ghoul Boss spawned both times at the upper ring of the marker. The lower ring is a 15 minute spawn (seems to be PH for some inky necro, approx lvl 15). The three other spawns are 5-6 minutes each.

First time i did it, got the leader after two PH's (little less than an hour) and the boss after about 3 hours camp. Second time got the boss first, after maybe 30 minutes, and the leader was there waiting for me after medding up after Boss fight... lucky i guess.

This quest goes MUCH faster if you work both spawns at once, just kill three sets of Undead PH's, camo up and kill the shadow PH, camo again and heal up while killing more undead PH's... cake. Brownie scouts will NOT see through camo.

hope this helps...

i had a druid friend help with this....i told her to expect a long long camp for the shadowman leader. boy was i wrong we zoned in and i looked on track and BAM Shadowman Leader. We made very short work of him. As we where camping the Ghoul Boss I looked on track again (to see if I could find the woman with the ring) and sure enough... there he was again! Did we just get lucky? or did they change the spawn so that hes around more offten? I helped a ranger with this before and we spent 6 hours on the shadowed man! and about 1 on the boss. maybe the spawn times have been switched or something.

would be nice if they tweaked the weapon up to 9damage or so.. took me 10 hours to get it straight. i asked around to see if anyone had done it.. doesn't seem like many have. i'm just looking for a range slot item that adds stats, which this does pretty well.

RE: Do you have to complete the SSoM quest or not? <nt>
# Feb 25 2001 at 9:45 AM Rating: Default
No I do not believe that you have to complete the SSoM quest 1st. I just completed this quest and it was worth it. The Ghoul Boss is the longest spawn and I was lucky because he is on a random spawn table and I only had to wait 2 days for him. I did it the short cut way and took him 1st. I was LvL 35 and he coned yellow to me and hit hard. I had to end up snareing him and God Bless the new SoW kite him. As it turned out we accually both killed each other but since I was bound on the other side of the zone I was ablr to loot the body and get the book. As Long as you stand near the Undead Marker brownie scouts will leave you alone I did not see one while I camped. While I ran around the zone kiteing him however I was in danger of them. I had mistakenly heard that if you kill a bunch of shadow men at the temple the Shadowman Leader will spawn. Don't do that I wasted 1 day doing that. There is a wandering Shadowman that spawns near the GF zone kill him and then in 25 min he or the Leader will appear. I got lucky and the Leader poped on the 2nd spawn Be very careful of brownie scouts going after him I was in a goup of just me and a 45th warrior friend and while tracking the leader 2 scouts hit us and wiped us out in no time...little bastards...but when we rezoned and looted the Shadow man leader was still there this time a easy kill and the rest of the quest is easy...Great Weapon but make sure you Pierceing Skill is good mine sucks....hehe

there should be only one sman and hes a wuss for my level 30 cleric to solo for some exp. i think you are at the big sman camp by the huge statue this is NOT where ya wanna be. the sman you want is along the right wall comming from gfay (he spawns then wonders so use track) the leader spawns on the path to gfay most of the time =) he conned yellow to my 30 cleric when doing this quest with a ranger friend of mine =)

well...as a lvl 23 ranger...I hid while two lvl 30's kited the ghoul boss...I feel lvl 20's would be lucky to get the ghoul boss log. It has a tenacious root, thus he can get to you.

# Oct 17 2000 at 11:58 PM Rating: Decent
I grouped up with a druid for extra tracking coverage and a key to tan easy camp: wolf form. With wolf form the brownie scouts pass right past you. The ghoul boss spawns at the undead marker. I cleared it out and he spawned with the next group. The shadowed man leader was a lot tougher. I had to kill 6 placeholders before the leader showed up. After that, it was a piece of cake (we also killed the Underthistle Brownie a few times and picked up a set of Ivy cords). I turned in the items, ported to WC to run to Kithicor and ported back to get my spear. My piercing skill needs some work, but once it's up to par I'll keep the spear in my range slot when I'm not using my bow.

I think I can speak for everyone on this topic. Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.
Where exactly does Boss spawn?
# Sep 25 2000 at 6:21 PM Rating: Decent
I am a 40th level ranger on Eci. I tried looking around this zone for the Ghoul Boss for his book. I had gotten the shadowleader code book a while back and was told it was for a ranger only weapon quest, but I had no details until recently. Anyway while looking for the Ghoul Boss I got ran out of Lfay once by the DE encampment near MM and once by a brownie scout. The brownie scout was blue formidible to me and it kick my ***** I barely made Gfay with half a bar and didnt even hurt him. Good thing I got snare on him before turning tail. Really brings it home how lame my character is at 40th level when you cant take any blues solo I have encountered lately.
RE: Where exactly does Boss spawn?
# Nov 30 2000 at 9:58 AM Rating: Default
You cannt solo anything because your not using the right tatics. Rember that Grasping Roots spell you got way back when at level 15? This is your absoulte best friend when soloing. Go find a nice big open zone, find a blue critter. ROOT it! Cast Stinging Swarm, and BACK UP! Back up to out of spell range. YOU THE HIDE SKILL!!!!!! Cann't stress this enough, big time helps against adds that wander near were you medding. It is much more realible then Camo in this situation, also has an unlimited duration to my knowlege. Then plop your butt on the ground and med. Have your mouse hovering over the done button and your fingers on the SS hot key or Alt-** (spell slot number) for GR, whichever you prefer. I chose the Alt-** method. The instant GR breacks stand up and recast it. Also recast SS as it has a tendincy of wearing soon after GR does. When it gets to about running health, stand up and Snare him then walk up and simply wack him to death. You should be close to full health and over half mana if everything goes well.
RE: Where exactly does Boss spawn?
# Dec 05 2000 at 11:49 AM Rating: Default
Are you joking?? Stinging Swarm does a max of 80hp. Assuming it stays on. What are you gonna do root it and SS it for 5 hrs? Please. And when you choose a melee class you sould know you can't solo ever. And when that rare occasion happens when you can its not worth it.

Man the above must be a druid im guessin.. and never played a ranger with heart. One trick.. and some may laugh..(laugh all you want cause it works when these are the tools you have). is use flame lick then swarm. They stack in that order and do work ok together.. Im still soloing fine at 42 and will be soloing fine till around 45(not using this tactic for exp/ panic animal is a killer spell). then ill get back into the group thing. Example is the minotaur Hero.. If I walk up to him and melee him I dont make it(even with ice tooths/crystalized sword/800ac/skills maxed). If i snare/root/dot-dot/med a few repeat about 3-4 times, (mana at about 3 bubs now), He is at about 1/2 hp left... have to re-root when necessary. Then I skill up a bit with arrows and throw in a few lightnings when i feel like it(hit for 99 most of the time).. This only takes about 8-9 min for this ranger, and the last time i did this.. I only got hit once, and it was a reposte for 87 after he was done fighting.. This is only an example of a situation where this works for me.. The anon char above has a few good points also.. and please.. I know this isnt really the place for tactics for rangers so dont rant about it.. Or maybe it is a good place for ranger info you be the judge.

Soloing this mob as a Ranger
# Jan 12 2001 at 11:36 PM Rating: Default
Lol - thats too funny, You say a Ranger cant solo?
Way back when I was a lvl 10 Ranger I was told that I wouldnt be able to solo past my 20th season. I have to admit 20+ was tough to solo but it was doable. People swore that I wouldnt be able to solo past 30. They all believerd the only classes soloing Verdants in Burning wood at lvl 45 would be Druids. Well I was there at lvl 45 as well, Soloing arbors and verdants - some of which still con blue at lvl 51. Now I have to admit I am having a rough time soloing anywhere for much in the way of exp but it can be done!

Strategy for soloing as a Ranger:
1) Mem your heal snare root and dot
DO NOT USE A BLAST!
2) Pull with snare and get to an area you will be safe - when the mob gets there tank it till you get down to two bubbles of health at which point backup and root it.
3) Dot it with whatever dot you have (Stinging Swarm - or much later - Immolate) - This will not kill the mob and will actually barely hurt it... but it will keep it from regenerating
4) Stand back and heal yourself. When you are healed sit and med till A) root breaks and you have to tank more or B) The Dot wears at wich point you should resume Tanking.

********************GENERAL RULE*****************
Always keep a reserve of 20 mana for snares and emergency root. Run and med if you run out of mana

why bother?

Lemme ask this, if the min level is about 30 or so, WHY cant the same ranger get a group and do Lguk for Ebony Blades?

From the camp horror stories I hear its quicker to get duely Ebonies which IMO are far better.

7/23 and some stat boosts (which really dont mean much) OR
7/24 awsome proc. Druid roots got fixed, EBlades stick now and due to their natural high proc rate they can dish out more then Yaks (although I never did it with less then a 150 dex).

I'm not saying that this is a bad weapon, but for whats involved to get it... unless they put the Ivy Etched Machete back on test and port it to live.

Well fellow Rangers, please heed my advice. EBlades instead.

Two words: ranged slot (stat bonuses are sweet)
also.....

Also:

Its piercing, some people like that.
Root isn't always a good proc, considering it will override a snare, and breaks much more frequently, it can result in runners causing collasal trains. I'll never use an eblade in guk, solusek, perma, or other such places unless its an emergency.

Gives me a warm fuzzie feeling knowing I have done my part to help out Ranger kind by killing the evil Shadowmen. Besides its cool running around with two Ranger only questable weapons, not many classes can do that at this level.
Also GR is a very very undesired proc. Besides if you have 150+dex the yak and eblade would still proc at the same RATIO meaning yak would still out damage it.
Yak has a base damg/deley ratio of: 0.304
Eblades is: 0.292
Orc Impaler: 0.304

You are saying a slower weapon that procs Root is better than this faster weapon without the Root proc? Root procs are generally a BAD thing, and most of the time you should not take an otherwise inferior (in this case, slower) weapon simply because of the proc, even if it's a good proc.

Well, as of the new patch, root doesn't over-write snare anymore, so that makes the root proc more desireable again.... I am not quite ready to do this quest, but I probably will, just to have the weapon, not that bad, and nice to say you did it.
