Hail the hermit inside the hut in the southern part of South Karana. He will give you a quest to kill Linaya Sowlin in Western Karana. She drops "a human heart". Give this heart to the Hermit and he will give you the flute and/or the page needed for the Winds of Karana quest below. He also says our business is done, unless you are interested in joining the unkempt druids. If you tell him you wish to become an Unkempt Druid, or you wish to join the Unkempt Druids, he will say, "Excellent! Wait here, Master Jale Phlintoes will be here shortly".

Jale Phlintoes spawns nearby. You can track him down. What happens from here is not known.

Jale Phlintoes is the founder and leader of the Unkempt Druids (some background is available from Geneal Woodone in Surefall Glades by asking him "Who is Jale Phlintoes?" He mentions a "high bounty as a reward" for his head.

Jale is a druid guildmaster, and highly resistant to magical attacks. Twice he's been reported killed, but no head has dropped.

Hailing the hermit does not get this quest. This is actually a triggered part of the winds of karana quest.

Could you explain what you mean by this? While hailing the Hermit doesn't start any quest, the winds of Karana doesn't start an 'unkempt druids' quest either. How I understand it, you have to say to the Hermit, "I want to join the unkempt druids", which spawns Jale.

Is this not what is menat by the "Unkempt Druids" quest?

Yes I have gone through all that many times looking for some catch to an unkemp druids off shoot quest and found none. I have EQ Dev confirmation that Jale has no quests or dialog.

So what is it that I should be seeing?

I think the point was it's a side quest that branches off the other one. You get the dialog for the keywords after doing most of the other quest. At least that's how I'm reading it.

Although, you can just say the trigger phrase at anytime, to find them, originally, you need to do all the other parts.

Seems to be just a slight misunderstanding on both parts. Fcoty, in that he used the word trigger, but it was meant for the hail, not the key phrase. And Yeph in taking that, that meant it was not a separate quest.

I could be wrong on both parts, but it is how I'm reading everything going on.

Yther Ore.

I have no argument there. But my original post is saying, there is no quest "Unkempt Druids". Unless you want to count the spawning of Jale a quest. Jale is not a quest NPC. You can't do anything but spawn him, train with him since he is a druid trainer, or I guess kill him.
Unkempt Druids Quest
# Dec 23 2009 at 8:08 AM Rating: Default
After much effort looking into Jale Phlintoes and an Unkempt Druids quest I have found that Jale is not involved in any quest or quest items. Nor has he any dialog. So this has been laid to rest. This has been confirmed by a Dev.

Unkempt Druids

So for the fun of it I thought I'd try to see what was what for this quest.

I say to the Hermit, "i want to join the unkempt druids" and waited on Jale. No response so I killed him.

Tried it a second time. Jale attacked me asap. So I thought I'd go get unkempt druid faction. But now the Hermit atacks me on site - even though there are no faction hits when you kill the Hermit. So no idea what faction he is on. But he no longer responds to a hail or the "i want to join the unkempt druids" line.

I went to see the hermit today. I told him I want to become an unkempt druid and he said to wait outside for Jale Phlintoes. I looked on tracking and he was there. I went outside and he came running up from the east to just outside the hermit's gate. (I took a screen shot) I tried to hail him, but he said nothing. I right clicked on him and he seemed to be a Druid guildmaster, and conned red to a 56 druid. I trained 2hb with him, as I had a few extra points. He despawned in about 45 seconds. I went back in and told the hermit the same thing, and Jale came running back to the hut. I am not sure where this goes now.

Further note on spawning Jale Phlintoes:

I am able to spawn him with my druid, who is amiable to the hermit. I cannot spawn him with my magician, who is dubious to the hermit. My mage is allied with the JPF people.

Geneal Woodone still says there is a bounty for Jale's head, so I'll be getting a group together to whack Jale today.

I was able to whack Jale twice so far. He dropped a Great staff (twice) and Human Blood, but no head so far.

He runs below 10% and is very very resistant to magic. My druid's epic dot landed each time, and the mage in my group got a few spells to land as well. He hit for a max of 380, but the warrior in the group was never really in any danger.

There was a huge faction hit on Unkempt druids; my druid went from amiable to dubious after the 1st kill and to KOS after second kill (but who cares about Unkempt Druid faction?)

The Hermit Disappears
# Jul 16 2003 at 7:58 PM Rating: Decent
Today was the first time I camped the Hermit. I found that I had to make sure He was rooted. Twice He got away on me through the fence and He just disappears. I still had him on my target but He was no where to be found. He spawned again after a while. Tried to Hail him but no response, not sure how quest works.
Inside A Hermit's hut
# Jun 26 2003 at 10:40 PM Rating: Excellent
I've camped the Hermit with almost all of my characters in their late teens or early 20's. It was no different tonight when I brought my newly dinged 19 year old druid there. I killed him once in a rather sloppy fight on my part. He spawned the second time, I targetted him through the crack in the door and casted away. He pops through his door but it never actually opens, never, ever. Towards the end of the second fight my snare and root both fade just as he got to the point where he turns tail and tries to run. But instead of walking into the corner and being beaten to death in the back he goe3s the other way and then he pops away. I can't find him anywhere and I shout for folks to look on track but no one sees him. Hmmm. I figured I would just wait it out, he would respawn, or someone would eventually kill him and then he would re-pop on his normal 6 minute timer. After about 10 minutes I'm bored to tears and no sign of the hermit, so I figure I'll try, for the millionth time, to get into the hut. I try all the usual tactics but none work, of course, they never do. But then as I rammed myself into the corner of the chimney the wall looks different, it's slipping past me ever so slowly. I continue running hard against the bricks when all of a sudden, POP. I did it! I'm inside the Hermits hut. It's actually a nice place. Big four poster bed, with one sitting chair to the west. Gray and Green tiled floor, very nice. What looks like a handmade wooden dresser, with 4 drawers I think, along the west wall. This is cool, but what will he do if he finds me here?? I better try and get back out. Hmmm, there seems to be a problem. The wall by the chimney is not letting me slip past. The door won't open of course, and there's no visible windows from the inside. I even tried the fireplace thinking I could make like Santa and head up the chimney but its one of those false fireplaces and doesn't have a real opening. I'm stuck inside now with no way to get out. Finally I had to resort to gating out probaly never to get back in again. But at least I can say I was in A Hermits Hut one time.

As of the 4th Feb patch, the text "I want to join the unkempt druids" causes Jala to spawn outside (after a short pause).

Red at 55, havent got any responses from him yet.
cracked flute
# Aug 20 2002 at 12:01 PM Rating: Decent
Cordelia Minster in North Karana wants the flute. When I camped the Hermit I got the flute three times. I can't remember what Cordelia gives you, some coin or a bard item. If she doesn't talk to you, she will still take the flute.

I have camped the hermit before and i can not ever remember a time when the door would open as some people have stated here.. maybe that was so before i started playing a year ago. however if, according to this guide, you are able to hail him and give him items, do you have to do it thru the crack of the door? or is there a way to get him outside with out engaging him in combat? i am just curious is all.

Faction
# Dec 18 2001 at 12:33 AM Rating: Default
I camped the hermit for a little bit. I was going to get food from the tower just inside the NK zone and Brother Nallin killed me. He has been threatening ever since. I have tried to get better faction with him, and Paladins, but have failed. I killed gnolls for the longest time, trying to get better faction, and it didnt work. I also tried doing quests, or turning in Putrid bear hides, only to find out I was KOS to the Paladins in the Temple of Life too. So, how do I get my faction back up with them?

Cordelia Minster, who is generally by the Wizard spires in North Karana, but who does wander between there and the gypsy camp, wants this flute. It was stolen from her. As a Wood Elf Druid, when I hailed her, she did not answer me, but giving her the flute started her talking, "Oh thank you" and all that. I can't remember what she gave me, either coin or some Bard item.

GM's have too much free time
# Aug 26 2001 at 8:55 PM Rating: Good
I was camping this guy on the Luclin server today, well, pretty much all day. Excellent exp and loot, but all of the sudden three guys (2 guys and a cute wood elf) with light-blue npc names came up and started harassing me. At first i thought they were regular guys (PC's with dark blue names) until they killed my pet. They claimed to be the "Unkempt Druids" (they were all druids) come to avenge the death of their brother. These guys were obviously GM's with too much time on their hands. I started talking to them, but they never stopped roleplaying saying that they were blessed by tunare to help nature... blah blah blah. they promised not to kill me if i promised not to kill the hermit anymore and to tell the people in the zone not to kill the hermit. i /shouted to tell the people as they wished, and then i shouted to the rest of the zone that there were gm's at the hermits house and a guild called the praetors started attacking them. they could have won but the gm's made it so that pc's couldnt attack them. everyone made up in the end and i made out with a few new friends and a few new nme's. because of my loyalty to teh unkempt druids, one of them even gave me their weapon, a 28/8 emblazed (or something) black mace (pretty nice, but i cant use). well, long story short, gm's have way too much time on their hands.

I find that rather funny as most people complain that there's never enough GM events. Here's this SK who was SINGLED OUT for an event & rewarded when he played along. Then he says "GM's have too much free time". Ain't no pleasing some people. LoL

If you want to target the hermit the easy way is
/target a_hermit
works at any short distance. Near the walls.
RE: targating
# Jan 08 2003 at 10:40 AM Rating: Decent
Another way is to walk behind the hermit's house, and to the left of the chimney. Now, try to run through the wall. You won't get through, but you will SEE through, and can target the hermit... BTW, don't attack him from here because he can hit you, but you can't hit him. Attack from in front of his front door. He'll come out to say hi 8)

Don't know if this will help anyone, but if you got to Geneal Woodone in Surefall and say "I will deliver a flask" he'll give you a flask of nitrates for Linaya Sowlin. You deliver the nitrates to Linaya, get a few copper and a druid from the Unkempt Druid guild spawns outside calling her out to kill her. She doesn't come out and if you hail him, he says something about not having a quarrel or something with you and to step aside. I killed him once and looted a torn cloth note indicating there was a price on the head of a druid in Surefall (sorry, can't remember the name). If you do nothing, he'll walk away and despawn fairly quickly.

I stumbled upon this place when coming back from necro BoB. A necro was camping it and there were corpses everywhere, I checked one and it had page and flute, checked a few more and all had page and flue. Seems they're both pretty common drops, and that guy is always camped.

The hermit is a very popular guy around South Karana - he's a 6 minute spawn, and ALWAYS 20th level. Shave a few minutes off the quest time by asking one of the brutes camping him if you can loot the page, flute. The page page drops nearly every time, the flute is uncommon.

Actually, he is a 3 minute spawn, which is why he is camped a lot of the times. At the right levels, that is steady, excellent xp. He can also load with Fine Steel weapons,. which at level 20, is >very< nice loot.

I was at the hermit house the other day dueling my friend near there. And I told my friend I am going to kill you. And the door opened!!!! So all you need to do is trigger him through the crack and it will open

HAHA I have hunted the hermit many times. One of the ways to get him to come out is to get near the house and say "kill you" (great if you are pulling him out to an open area to kill him easier).
