Ciodaru and Kathryn #10: Protect Kathryn Some More

This task is the 10th in a series of 12. AAt the end of the previous task, Ciodaru said this:
Ciodaru says 'This is lovely. Thank you very much! I have added the scent to it. Please keep it for now as I will have you make a box of gifts to give to her. I have horrible news though, I have heard yet another rumor of an attack on Kathryn. Please [promise] to stop this attack also!' You say, 'I promise....' Ciodaru says 'You must Hurry. Go!' You have been assigned the task 'Protect Kathryn Some More'. Go to Kathryn as quickly as you can Go to Kathryn 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa) This step updates as you step close to Kathryn, so prepare for battle before approaching her. Your task 'Protect Kathryn Some More' has been updated. a Tuffein thug says 'If it's a fight you want, I'll give it to you!' Kathryn says 'You shall pay for your insolence.' These four attacks come in approximately 2 minute 30 second waves, one Tuffein at a time. Each fight gives standard faction hits for killing a tuffein. Kill 1 Tuffein Thug 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa) Kill 1 Tuffein Grabber 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa) Kill 1 Tuffein Thug 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa) Kill 1 Tuffein Grabber 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa) Your faction standing with Tuffein got worse. Your faction standing with Tuffein Leadership got worse. Your faction standing with Minohten got better. Your faction standing with Nymphs of the Windwillow got better. 2 Thugs, 1 Grabber, 1 Young Griffon spawned instead of the needed 2nd Grabber.

If you are boxing 3, you need to do 3 times, one toon at a time.

If you're a pet class, please make sure your pet isn't out. 5 times I had my pet out and 5 times it caused Kathryn to die because I was on her hate list. This quest did not progress normally if she died in the process of me killing her. However, once I dismissed my pet and killed tuffein's without it, Kathryn stayed alive. This in turn allowed me to progress into the quest normally.

There seems to be a 2 min 30 second delay between each wave. If you position yourself between Kathryn and the path leading up facing down the path you should be able to grab the mobs as they spawn preventing the other NPC's from killing the mobs.

Thanks, changed waves to 2 minute 30 seconds from 90 seconds.

The most annoying part of this years old quest: the NPC's will keep on kill-stealing your tuffeins after they spawn. Can't complete the quest if even one spawn is kill-stole by the guards or kathryn.
Ok, if you are boxing or in a grp to do this task together, do NOT try to do them at the same time, because the last grabber drops 1 "evidence", and there are no more, that come running by, after that second grabber that drops the "evidence", so, I suggest each person/character do 1 of this task in the group at a time, and can do them 1 right after the other, so, it is not that big of a deal, and the tuffiens pop right around the corner from Kathryn, as well, so, if you keep your eye on the corner area, you will see it pop, and they are pretty fast, so, keep that in mind, and they pop roughly around 2-3minutes apart, so, its not hard to kill each one individually....

during the fight i received a nasty ae dot called lifesprout from kathryn. 385 damage per tick. i actually died on the 3rd mob because i didn't have enough time to heal from the dot from the 2nd fight and the dot from the 3rd fight got me.
Barbs sprout from your skin, making you bleed. you have taken 366 points of damage.
you have taken 385 damage from lifesprout by kathryn (x5).
the barbs dissapear.
So i stood at loc -317, -76 and intercepted them before they got near kathryn and had no probs. they flee at low health, approx 20% so pull them about 10-15 feet down the path. they seemed to spawn at about loc -301, -125. i didnt get the evidence till the last mob.

Did this solo as a level 51 bard. Took a number of tries to get it right. The hardest part was aggroing the tuffeins before they aggroed Kathryn. I tried staying near their spawn point and playing AE slow, but they are often fast enough to get out of range before it goes off. I could out DPS Kathryn, but if a mob or two assisted, I had trouble then.
What I finally ended up doing was logging on my main, a 70 necro. I killed anything around Kathryn that would assist her. This included the mobs down the trail in case I needed to kite at any point. I then pulled Kathryn across the clearing and rooted her with Petrifying Earth (3min root) and camped over to the bard. This gave me the room to aggro the first couple mobs, and I didn't have to worry about being KSed.
What I finally ended up doing was logging on my main, a 70 necro. I killed anything around Kathryn that would assist her. This included the mobs down the trail in case I needed to kite at any point. I then pulled Kathryn across the clearing and rooted her with Petrifying Earth (3min root) and camped over to the bard. This gave me the room to aggro the first couple mobs, and I didn't have to worry about being KSed.
The 4 mobs seemed to spawn around 2 minutes and 12 seconds (22 ticks) after the previous one's death. I killed each one very quickly though, so it is possible those figures are from the point they spawn; which would mean it possible to have to fight more than one at once. Each spawn behind Kathryn, a few yards away at the top of the spiral walkway.

The spawn times are not based on death of the previous mob. As a 51 bard, I had a grabber that started to chain heal itself. My DPS was not sufficient to burn it down before the thug spawned.
I'd also like to note that unless you hard aggro the tuffeins, they will completely ignore you and make a beeline for Kathryn. When the thug spawned as I was fighting the grabber, he did not assist.

I completed this last night with my 55 necro after several failed attempts. Here's what I learned:
1. If you are a pet class, keep your pet out of this fight. The dryads cast AE spells that will land on your pet and cause it to attack the dryads. I tried several times with the pet and it always turned out badly.
2. Speaking of the dryads AE spells, you'll need to stand well back if any of the dryad windweavers get caught up in this fight. They have a ~375 hp per tick dot that killed me at least once. So, it's best to keep your distance and nuke/dot from afar.
3. But don't get too far back! I successfully landed the kill shot a few times on the failed attempts and the quest text wasn't updated. I'm not 100% sure of the reason, but I suspect that I was too far away because I was trying to stay out of dryad AE range. On later attempts I got a bit closer and never had this problem.
As noted above, these guys spawn about 1 every 2-3 minutes. The thugs are fairly easy to bring down, but the grabbers are healers and can be tougher. Ultimately it came down to timing my nukes well enough to be able to land the killshot, which is something I wasn't used to doing as a necro.

No Mercs either. I had a tank set to assist me, but before I could target the tuffins I got hit with the AOE, the dryad came on my target list and merc went to town. If you are not receiving credit, you may not be doing enough damage to the mob. Not sure the percentage but I had the same problem with the Spiders in the cave in Blackfeather Roost. If you don't do enough damage, the bear gets credit for the kill, and you get no loot. I ended up murdering so many bears. It was a massacre.
