Ulan Meadowgreen is located (119, -2192) in the centaur encampment in South Karana.

You say, 'Hail, Ulan Meadowgreen'

Ulan Meadowgreen says 'Greetings. I am Ulan Meadowgreen of the family Meadowgreen. My brother and I are the best armorers in all of Norrath. We craft [armor] for the bravest warriors in the land. If you are a warrior of renown, and are interested in our armor, I have some mighty [labors] you might wish to attempt for me.'

You say, 'What labors?'

Ulan Meadowgreen says 'Only those who can prove themselves mighty warriors deserve to wear our crafted armor. While my brother prefers trophies, I seek instead tasks which will help my craft and my people.'

You say, 'What armor?'

Ulan Meadowgreen says 'I smith [bracers], [greaves], [pauldrons] and [breastplates]. My brother Shakrn smiths helms, gauntlets, boots and vambraces.'

You say, 'What bracers?'

Ulan Meadowgreen says 'The fine sheen you see on our crafted armor is produced by a mixture of river berries and juice squeezed from the optic nerves of an evil eye. We are always in need of more optic nerves for our armor. Bring me a handful of optic nerves and a [sapphire], and I will give you a crafted bracer for your trouble.'

Sapphires may be purchased from several merchants. A Bunch of Optic Nerves drops from Evil Eyes in the Gorge of King Xorbb and other newer zones.

Upon handing in a sapphire and a Bunch of Optic Nerves:

Ulan Meadowgreen says 'Wait, ______, are you not forgetting something?'
Ulan Meadowgreen says 'Very good. I am always in need of more optic nerves. Take this crafted bracer with my thanks.'
You gain experience!!

Doh! Sapphires sell for more than the bracer does! Buy the bracer in bazaar and don't bother doing the quest. Better still, find yourself a Ry'Gorr or Crusty bracer instead.

I don't know about your servers but at least on tholuxe the bracer is MUCH cheaper than the quest, so if u want the bracer just buy it. Also, if you don't mind the cha loss, then crusty bracers are also far superior to these and only about 10-20pp different. Also, the crusty are cheaper than the saphires alone, so at least on tholuxe this quest I'd say is pretty useless. However, if u have a saphire and have nothing else to do with I suppose this quest might be a good idea. I wouldn't go out of my way to get these tho. Just my 2cp

Getting these bracers are easier than the gauntlets. You don't even have to hunt Evil Eyes. As long as you can survive the trip from your favorite jeweler for the sapphire to the merchants in NK outside Beholder's Maze (not sure of loc) to the centaurs in SK, you're good. You can almost ALWAYS find a bundle of optic nerves on the merchants from people hunting the eyes for gems and Polished Bone Bracers and selling everything else they loot. Each bunch is around a plat or two which is pretty insignificant considering you're buying the gems anyway.

These and the gauntlets are the easiest pieces to get considering no killing is really necessary for either. The gauntlets require Aviak Charm which is a no drop loot from Aviak Avocets from SK. These are commonly left on the corpse by people hunting them at the birdhouse. Just run by and pick one up, buy 2 star rubies, and you have the gauntlets.

#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 18 2002 at 2:23 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I do this quest ALL the time, all I do is farm the eyes, and get about a stack, then, I use a Cha buff on myself, Benev the merchant, and I can get the gem for 50p. I have given about 20 away

Wow, a stack of the eyestalks? They don't stack. And you get sapphires for 50pp. BS. 105 is the LOWEST you can get them for, even with ally faction and max charisma. Nice try though.

What I want to know, is what possible reason you would have to make this up.

No they do not stack. It is the eye stalks that stack. What you want for this quest is the "bunch of optic nerves"

Feeling a bit lazy, so I bought two sets of nerves at the NK druid ring after checking all the merchants in EK on the Sol Ro server. 2.5 plat each.

Charisma can really save you money on the gems. Created a bard to buy gems for my friend's Ivy etched quests and so far it has saved us at least 100 pp.

Just a word of advice, If you have to buy the sappire, make sure you shop around. For example, two vendors in Freeport sell them. The first, on the path to North FP, gave me a PC of 125pp but the vendor in the bank gave me a PC of 160pp, for the same stone! I obviously got the cheaper of the two, but just take a look before you buy.)

Of course the answer to your question is entirely based on opinion, but my answer is yes. The optic nerves are very easy to obtain for a mid-level character to obtain and are a decent chance for experience for a lower level character. The end product has great AC and some decent stats for what little effort is involved. Granted, the gems are a bit spendy, but all in all I think these bracers are excellent.
trick for evil eyes
# Nov 18 2001 at 8:36 PM Rating: Default
Here is a little tip i learned while soloing Evil Eyes with my cleric, if you get charmed type /sit and it will break the charm, pressing the sit button will not fork so dont try it, this is not hearsay as i have done this myself, 100% guaranteed :) good luck
Trick doesn't work
# Dec 17 2001 at 2:15 AM Rating: Decent
Perhaps Verant read your post here or it was on a patch they put it out. But your trick doesn't work anymore. Was hunting the named eyes yesterday with a druid and they charmed me. Typed in /sit and nothing happened.
So all others who read this, don't rely on it, might get you killed. (I wasn't)
Cons blue to me at 21
# Nov 08 2001 at 12:27 AM Rating: Decent
Just a comment on the level of these guys. I am lvl 21 warrior only a little twinked and i can take one of these guys and his pet as long as he doesn't recast his charm which sucks. One time when i was the only one in the zone i attacked an evil eye hit it one time for 22dmg and it folded i thought that maybe it was already almost dead but nobody else was in the zone. Don't know what that is about but i have yet to get either a bunch or a bundle of optic nerves from them how rare is the drop? Oh yeah by the way they were conning blue to me at 21!
Eyes dying with one shot
# Dec 17 2001 at 2:20 AM Rating: Decent
To the fast-dying eyes I have also a comment. Have camped King Xorbb or Beholders for a week now trying to get the Polished Bone Bracers. Mostly camp on crossroads near entrance. Every one or two hours an eye passes by there. Sometimes (every 2 or 3 time) the eyes seem to be Illusions. One shot and they're dead and no loot on them. So watch out for eyes without pet wandering around. Before nuking it with your strongest blast try a small hit!
RE: Eyes dying with one shot
# Jan 30 2002 at 4:22 PM Rating: Excellent
i hunted the eyes for about 3 hours got 2 PBB's and tons of gems and optic nerves ok on the subject of the easy kill eyes ive had it happen to me 2x and i noticed a spell went off right before they died i think it was called infectious spores both times i resisted but havnt seen it on other eyes that i take to the limit maybe its an exploding disease spell that kills the eye just my 2cp

Low Charisma
# Aug 21 2001 at 6:52 AM Rating: Decent
I hate low charisma, i have a cleric and a warrior, BOTH dwarves, i was going to get the crafted for my warrior with my cleric, cause my cleric is higher level, but i found i didnt have the money, lol. So i made a high elf chanter, and added 25 points into CHA. I also gave him some charisma items. He had LOADS of charisma, and it was much easier, any dwarf, ogre, troll warriors with low CHA, try this tactic, works GREAT.

Can't stress how useful this tactic is. If you have an ugly fella and the means to do this, make a high-CHA mule. It will save you a TON of cash in the long run.

# Aug 14 2001 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
I bought a "A Sapphire" from a someone and then I bought "Sapphire" from a merchant. I then relized that the "Sapphire" was stackable and the "A Sapphire" was not stackable and was a Lore Item. Will they both work? Has anybody had this problem before?
Quest Items
# Aug 13 2001 at 7:24 AM Rating: Decent
I just completed this quest, i used "A Bunch of Optic Nerves" Which i got from evil eyes in the Gorge of King Xorbb. They had less than 721hp, and conned green to a lvl 29...

Anyway, i also tried handing in an evil eye eyestalk and he said "I'm...erm, not quite sure what to do with this, but... thanks, i guess." So, do NOT hand in eyestalks to try to do this quest.

At the top of this forum it says you need a bundle of optic nerves... but on the LEFT SIDE, under quest items: it shows "A Bunch of Optic Nerves". The top of the forum is WRONG, the left side is CORRECT.

Good hunting.
Evil Eyestalks
# Jul 22 2001 at 7:57 AM Rating: Decent
I have been told by a few people that you can use Evil Eyestalks instead of optic nerves, does anyone know if this is true or not? I would rather find out before dropping 100+PP for a sapphire. ;) thank you.
Quest Information
# Jun 19 2001 at 7:20 AM Rating: Default
The sapphire can be purchased in High Hold Keep and the bundle of optic nerves from Evil Eyes in the Gorge.

Warriors, bring magic companions, as at 25th I was getting charmed and killing my party.

As a Barbarian Warrior with 55 Charisma, my cost on the Sapphire was 197pps, but I had a guildmate purchase which he did for 102pps.

These bracers are very much better than the Banded and well worth the quest.

Good luck.

You might be able to kill the eyes, but i tried when I was in my low 20s and the Eyes just charmed me and killed me.. Watch out, they are not nice, and are decievingly low lvl. If you dont have a group then i would wait till at least lvl 25. So either get a high lvl partner or a big group. Also get someone to give you magic resist.
bunch or bundle

I too have done this quest. Ulan gave me nothing in return,Its frustrating when you spend all your money buying a sapphire. Can i get an answer if it is multiple, bunch, or bundle. Thanks in advance
RE: bunch or bundle
# May 15 2001 at 11:01 AM Rating: Good
The same thing happened to me and I have found out why. I have seen hints on other message boards and was able to verify it myself.

WARNING: This problem occurs with all the crafted quests that deal with Ulan (half of the crafted armor quests).

Slightly to the left and in front of Ulan is another centaur, a centaur foal I believe. The first time I tried this quest, I received nothing. When I tried the second time, I made note of EVERYTHING that happened. I went past the "other centaur" and up to Ulan. I hailed Ulan and made him give details on the crafted bracers. I clicked on the bunch of optic nerves that I had and gave them to Ulan. The trade window popped up BUT NOT THE TRADE WINDOW FOR ULAN! The trade window for the "other centaur" came up! It would appear that Ulan and this "other centaur" are so close that there is some overlap of their "trade window radius". I canceled this trade and re-positioned myself. Tried to give the optic nerves to Ulan and this time Ulan's trade window appeared. I added the gem and received my bracers. :)

So, to re-cap. A bunch of optic nerves is correct (never seen a bundle and believe they do not exist). When the trade window comes up, make certain it is Ulan's trade window (this is true for all quests that deal with Ulan).

This also explains why I've seen higher lvl characters camping here. They are going after the "other centaur" in order to acquire the gems given to it.

Hope this helps! :)

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME! I lost an expensive sapphire AND my optic nerves. I was so ticked. Beware of that overlap folks... I ended up giving away my loot to the centaur foal next to Ulan. Could I kill him and loot his corpse to get it back? ...didn't think so.

Yeah you could kill him and loot the stuff back as long as it's not No Drop. No Drop stuff disappears as soon as you give to an NPC for obvious reasons.
RE: bunch or bundle

I've also camped one of the quest centaurs for the gems that people give. One's a merchant one's a regular mob. I've looted as many as 2 rubies, a star ruby and a sapphire on one kill. Pretty lucrative camp. Never thought about killin the little one.

The nerves i got from a vendor in east karana right by beholders maze zone. EE in beholders maze and East Karana also drop them. And they all drop a bundle of optic nerves, even though it may seem that you have to get more then one. Then i simply got a nice person with good carisma to buy the saphire, and handed both to ulan medowgreen in South karana. The result was a 12ac, 2 dex, 2 int bracer. The bracer is not lore or no drop either (ie=you can get two or more)

My Barbarian Warrior with indifferent Karana Resident faction (for the merchant in EK near The Gorge) and 55 CHA paid just under 3pp for the optic nerves. At 17, he received about 1/2 bub of experience along with the bracer.
