Ok started this quest 11-05-19 ..
Took literally less than 10min from start to finish ..
had bard speed on .. but left bard in pok
zoned into tox from Paineel stone
never crossed river just looked for toadstools while i was running got 8 of them before bard speed faded then got the last 2 within next minute maybe 2.. zoned back into pok
went to NPC Hermit turned in toadstools got Earring viola .. easy peasy ..

This solo task was introduced in October 2006 and is available every year around Halloween.
It begins with a wizened hermit near the main bank in the Plane of Knowledge. You say, 'Hail, a wizened hermit' a wizened hermit says 'I don't understand what all the fuss is about. This should be a day of [fear], not celebration!' You say, 'Fear?' a wizened hermit says 'Yes! All should be afraid! Er, well I can't think of anything in particular they should be scared of come to think of it. I just know that when the [masses] are fearful they stay home, and out of my hair!' You say, 'Masses?' a wizened hermit says 'Far too many people out and about today if you ask me. I have half a mind to turn them all into [toadstools].' You say, 'Toadstools?' a wizened hermit says 'It's a neat trick actually. Since it seems there won't be any peace for me today regardless, I suppose I could show it to you. Bring me back some toadstools from Toxxulia, if you dare!' You have been assigned the task 'Toadstool Surprise'. Doing this quest in 2019 the spawn points on the map don't help. They added another quest with scarecrows roaming toxx. The toadstools aggro the scarecrows and chase them. I was finding groups of 3 and 4 chasing "a pie flinger" and such. They are trackable tho.

This quest is still active for 2009. Be very careful of the Cliknar Invaders around the zone. Very tough mobs around level 70.

If you aren't lucky enough to have track (and the mushrooms are being camped like they were on my server), here are some locs to start searching around:

These aren't exact but should be close enough that you'll see them right away or know where to wait. They're on a 6 min timer. Good Luck!

The toadstools ARE trackable! Look for 'a Toxxulia toadstool'.

you DO NOT have to loot 11 - yes there is a bug where you don't get an update, but that can be fixed by looting the next shroom to your curser rather than right-clicking it directly to your inventory. the lack of update can happen more than once, but if you loot to your curser it will update your task to the actual number of shrooms you have (up to ten).
A Number of A Toxxulia Toadstool spawn every 5 minutes or less.
You /open them like a chest and loot Toxxulia Toadstool.
You have to loot 10 of the Toadstools.
Once you loot the 10th one, you mysteriously see that you have 11 of them?

I did this on 19 different toons and each and EVERY time, the second looted Toadstool did not yield a task update.
So it did require that I loot 11, though only 11 were needed for the task turn in.

I completed quest with 2 guys on seperate accounts both without serp expansion and recieved no earing.I got completion message but no item.
look in your bags. The item pops there, not on your cursor.
This DOES NOT stack with the Magician's Phantasmal Protection. Not sure what else it won't stack with. Turned out to be a waste of time.

there are spawns at other book too at Paineel PoK book area too.
i decided to test this today and only looted 9 shrooms and then when i zoned out to pok i got an extra mushroom and my task was completed, so i guess you only need to loot 9 shrooms until it is possibly fixed. Dont know if you can keep zoning in and out to get shrooms though. Anyone care to inform us if it works?

Hrm, I was wondering why I looted 10 shrooms and when I got to Knowledge I had 11 in my inventory. Weirdness!
There is a bug in the task when you loot shrooms. It seems that the 2nd shroom you loot doesn't update your task. So by the time you have looted 10, it will have only counted 9. When you zone, it updates the task to correctly show that you looted all 10. You can zone at any time to correct your count, however, if you zone, the 2nd shroom after you zone again won't be counted. So just loot all 10, your task will show 9, zone back to PoK, and you'll then show all 10 looted, and you can turn the 10 you have in to the quest NPC.
copy n paste this to your tox_2.txt file,in the map folder ,and voila !! i think they are all on the list.

I found out that the toadstools will spawn after killing and killing and killing. Anything and everything. I sat in one spot and in less than ten minutes I had all ten. Hope this helps.

I was able to have this buff up and a pet. I summoned my pet and then clicked the earring, I got a message saying I cannot have two pets, but I got the buff and the effect from the buff.

Same here... nice find. Now pet classes have a reason to do this quest!

no it doesn't. summon your pet, equip earring, click earring, get message you can't have two pets up at once, get buff.
just becareful about zoning, the buff stayed with me zoning from GH to GL, but zoning back from GL to GH, it wore off. no biggie really.
if you're just looking to have a little sporali following you about, suspend minion, equip earring, click get buff and familiar--however, buff and familiar will poof upon zoning.

Easy enough, loot 10 toxxulia toadstools. Ground spawn, trackable. I hit them to kill em to loot goodies, but was told can just /open them. Return to wizened hermit. get choice of loot, earring or nothing (new screen i haven't seen before). Toadstools seem to pop in same spots, just lots of spots. Marked them on my map, and kept coming back to same spots. i got about 10 spots marked just on north end of Tox.

It seems that it doesn't work even if you have any buffs up, never mind a pet.
I don't have my logs handy, but I did this last night soon after the events became available. Even so, there was quite a crowd in Toxx competing for the spawns.
Basically you have to find 10 "a Toxxulia toadstool", which spawn randomly around the zone. I never found any out on the Kerran side of the water, but they seemed to show up lots of places near both Erudin and Paineel, and maybe some inbetween. The toadstools are interactive objects, so you have to target one, then type /open (or use the Open button in your abilities window), then loot the opened toadstool. Do that ten times, return to PoK and give the loot to the hermit, and get the earring. (The stats on the earring are nice for low levels, plus it has a clicky Sporali Advisor spell which is nice at all levels, though pet users may have to be careful using it.)
The toadstools don't move, though they don't seem to respawn in the same places each time, so basically you're just running around looking for them, along with everybody else in the zone. :-) They look like patches of about a half dozen toadstools, and are maybe as tall as a gnome, so they're easy to spot. I couldn't tell whether killing other Toxx trash helped the toadstools spawn faster, but I did it anyway just in case.

As others have noted, the toadstools in fact have fixed spawn points; someone posted several at north end, there's lots of other places. Paineel PoK stone has at least 8 nearby (see map snippet below). Respawn time is just under 6 minutes, so if you just camp an area you can be in and out in less than 15 minutes. Killing other yard trash probably has no effect on toadstool spawns. Oh, and if you hit a toadstool with a wimpy enough attack they will run after you and try to beat on you; I haven't had one of them actually do damage, but they interrupted my wizard's attempt to mem a nuke.
Though my SK was able to get the clicky effect with his pet up as long as the pet was there first, I wasn't able to find any sequence that would let my wizard have both his familiar (or even just the familiar's effect) and the earring clicky. I haven't tried it yet with my druid's pet.

one caveat--for some reason, the task didn't update upon looting the 10th shroom, looted an 11th and task updated. but, that's just me--who knows what happened. so, don't give up if for some odd reason it doesn't update on 10th, just get another and it should work. didn't have to turn in 11 for task reward though, 10 worked just fine.
forgot to add, THANK YOU to USERNAMEALREADYEXITS for the locs--was a freakin' feedin' frenzy trying to get the shrooms near the paineel entrance. added your /locs to my map, ran up to Erudin entrance, badabing badaboo--was done in no time.
