This is another of the multiple part quests. When heading into Southern Karana, from Northern Karana mind you, there is a tower just before the bridge. Just outside the tower doors are four very large horn like structures. Standing beside one is a female bard. If you talk to her, and ask if there is anything you can do for her, she relays a sad story of a hermit who stole her flute.

Now, head into Southern Karana. Head straight south, making sure to give a wide berth to the Grave Yard of Lord Grimrot. About half way through the zone is a fountain, with Vhalen standing there. Vhalen, who is also the object of the broken Lute quest for bards, has an offer for you. He will complete his latest masterpiece for you. Of course, he needs something for this. Two sheets of a song. Pages 1 and 2 of the Winds of Karana. He tells you of a man who has stolen these pages. A vile man of a Hermit. Sound familiar eh?

Now, head southeast till you see a cottage. It has a hexagonal wall of stone surrounding it, so it's not hard to find. Inside the walls is "a hermit." A very unfriendly sort. The door to the hermits house is either locked, or broken and won't open. So it's hard to get to him. The easiest way to get him out is to stand behind the hut and say "I'm here to kill you" He will run out and attack you. You can also try to target him and attack him. After he is dead, his body will contain the Flute, Page 1 of the Winds of Karana or just one or the other. At this point, some factions will go up, down and you will no doubt gain some good experience. I estimate him to be around level 20.

Now, head back into Northern Karana, and hand the flute over to the bard sitting against the pillar. She, as thanks, will give you Page 2 of the winds of Karana, some experience, faction and occasionally a small cash reward.

You are almost complete. Head back into Southern Karana and hand both the pages to Vhalen at the same time. You will gain Faction, a small amount of money, and a Bard song. This song appears to be random, and usually low level.

[ Cannot be done at dubious - I expect amiable is needed much like his other quest. ]

The listed quest reward does need to be revamped.

The song Jaxan's Jig o' Vigor does no longer seem to be rewarded.

Today I received:
Song: Chant of Battle

Another player received this song in 2014:
Song: Chords of Dissonance

You could kill the hermit. Or, you could get him to talk about the flute and see if he'll give it to you.

You say, 'Do you have the Winds of Karana?'

a hermit says, 'So you seek the two song sheets? If you truly want them, you will help the cause of the Unkempt Druids. Otherwiset[sic], you would have to fight me for it. So, which will it be? Will you help the Unkempt Druids or will you fight me?

(this is why telling him you'll fight or kill causes him to attack)

You say, 'I will help the Unkempt Druids'

a hermit says, 'The Unkempt Druids are the voices of the trees and animals. We fight for the hunted prey and the vanishing forests. We are the true druids and rangers who fight for preservation of nature. If humanoid lives must be sacrificed to meet this goal, then so be it!'

You say, 'I will help'

a hermit says, 'Wise decision. I ask you then, to go to the western plains of Karana. Seek a farmer named Linaya Sowlin. Bring me her heart. A heart for a song sheet. Fitting, don't you think?

You have slain Linaya Sowlin!

<receive page 2. Find Cordelia in North Karana>

You say, 'Hail, Cordelia Minster'

Cordelia Minster says, 'Greetings! I am Cordelia, a traveling piper. I cannot play a tune for you, however, as my [flute] is gone.

You say, 'What flute?'

Cordelia Minster says, I traded my flute to a hermit in the southern plains of Karana. I had a spare flute, but was taken from my by some bandits. If you could find this hermit and ask him for my flute back, I would be most appreciative.'

<back to the hermit>

You say, 'Do you have the flute?'

a hermit says, 'A flute, eh? I do have a flute from a bard named Cordelia. You can have it back if you do me a favor.'

You say, 'What sort of favor?'

a hermit says, 'Oh! Will you? Well then, go into the Plains of Karana and search for a man named Talym Shoontar. He is a murderer of Norrath's creatures. He must be stopped! Bring me his head and you shall have your flute.'

Took some doing but I figured it out on the bard.

You say, 'Hail, Vhalen Nostrolo'

Vhalen Nostrolo says 'Nice to meet you. Do not the plains of Karana abound with life? This land is truly blessed by the gods. Would you like to hear a tune or will you pass up the opportunity??'

You say, 'I would like to hear a tune'

Vhalen Nostrolo says 'Inside this heart, I am trapped with the sight of beautiful colors, all memories of your love. They attack me with full might. You left me here in this garden of grey Never to see the true colors of the happiness of day Here in my heart I sit and I cry. You have left me alone and my colors have all died.... What do you think? Is it a happy tune or a sad tune?'

You say, 'Sad tune'

Vhalen Nostrolo says 'It takes a broken heart to truly appreciate that tune. I'm glad you enjoyed it. My dear Metala left me one year ago. The wound has healed, but the scar remains. I am presently trying to complete a new composition. Maybe that will turn me around.'

You say, 'What new composition?'

Vhalen Nostrolo says 'I have come here to create my greatest composition. I call it 'The Winds of Karana'. Alas, the song sheets have been taken from me. While I, ahem, attended to some personal business, a hermit came and stole two song sheets from my pack. It would be grand if, in your journeys, you were to come upon this hermit of the plains and return my song sheets to me. I would pay dearly. Now, I must get back to my thoughts. Please excuse me.'

You say, 'Hail, a hermit'

a hermit says 'Huh!!? Leave now before my pets devour you!!'

You say, 'I am here for the sheets of music'

a hermit says 'So you seek the two song sheets? If you truly want them, you will help the cause of the Unkempt Druids. Otherwiset, you would have to fight me for it. So, which will it be? Will you help the Unkempt Druids or will you fight me?'

You say, 'I will help the unkempt druids'

a hermit says 'Wise decision. I ask you then, to go to the western plains of Karana. Seek a farmer called Linaya Sowlin. Bring me her heart. A heart for a song sheet. Fitting, don't you think?'

The Hermit and the continued quest
# Jul 30 2005 at 6:09 PM Rating: Decent
I recently decided to check out the quest because I was bored. The Winds of Karana, Well I got the heart off of Linaya, delivered it, got the phrase to go talk to Cordelia for the other sheet for the winds quest. I spoke with her and she sent me back to the hermit for the broken flute. Now you ask the Hermit for the Cordelia's Flute and he tells you he needs you to do a favor for him before he will give it to you. You need to go kill Talym Shoontar and bring him his head. I forewent that process and Killed him in his little hut. The door to the gate surrounding his little hovel does open and he does stand outside near two wolf cubs. I am a Level 36 Ranger and I am not too worried about a faction hit with the Unkempt Druids. Feed them Prickly Pears and you will be fine. If anyone knows anything else about the quest after doing the Talym Shoontar contract, feel free to Post it.

Gnolls

Ok the thing about the gnolls and the hermit... he does NOT spawn gnolls. If the spires are totally left alone, one lone gnoll will wander away from the spires and walk right to the hermit's hut. The hermit was camped when the gnoll I was following got to it so I don't know if the gnoll kills him or if there's dialogue or whatever. I did follow the gnoll to the hut from the spires though.
ok at 16 for mage

Started camping him last nite with my 16 mage - he never killed me, but had a red Tesch Mas gnoll toast me and my pet right after taking him down once - so maybe he does spawn gnolls, not sure. He cons red to me, and earth pet doesn't ever hit him for damage, just the fire shield damage. Also, earth pet tends to root the guy in the house, which makes looting hard. After fight I'm oom and pet has maybe a bubb of life let - sometimes I lose the pet everytime - still looking for the best method of getting him. Am going to try him again with a water pet, but was camped this morning when I checked it out.

I just did this quest. First, a bit of background. I'm a level 35 Paladin, so the quest was trivial for me. I'll note below when I did and didn't get experience.

First off, I couldn't get Cordelia Minster to talk to me at all, even though she conned amiable. I was able to initiate the quest by asking her if I can help her; I forget the exact phrase that worked for me.

Next, some more info on our friend the hermit.

Hailing him and talking to him is a chore. The door won't open; I'm convinced this is for story reasons. After all, he's a hermit, so he doesn't want people wandering into his house. It's meant to be like this, and it's also obvious that the "crack" between the door edge and the wall is intentionally there for you to peek through. The trick to talk to him is to select him through the door, go around to the back of his house, then hail him from there. Be careful, he can and will clobber you through the walls.

When you hail him, he says, "Huh!!? Get out of my house before I have my pets devour you!!" I couldn't get any more info on the pets, but my guess is they are the gnolls that people kept seeing. Despite killing him twice (more on that later), I never saw any gnolls in his vicinity. However, there are some "an escaped Split Paw gnoll" that wander the zone, so maybe it was one of them that the earlier posters encountered?

If you ask the hermit about the "song sheets" or the "Winds of Karana", he'll respond and give you a choice: aid the Unkempt Druids, or fight him. He won't respond to anything I could think of regarding the "flute".

You can ask him about the Unkempt Druids ("what unkempt druids?") and he'll reply that they're basically a radical animal-rights group who'd rather kill people than animals.

If you say you'll aid the Unkempt Druids, he'll ask you to fetch him the heart of Linaya Sowlin, a farmer in Western Karana. Being a paladin, I refused and chose to fight him, though it may be interesting to see if this leads anywhere.

If you fight him and kill him, he says, "Your act of murder will not go unnoticed by the Unkempt Druids or nature itself." However, you don't get any faction messages.

The first time I killed him, I got some cash, a Fine Steel weapon, and Winds of Karana page 1, but no flute. I hung around, and sure enough, two minutes later, he respawned. I go through the dialog again, kill him again, and this time get some cash, another Winds of Karana page 1, and "a cracked flute". No FS weapon the second time. At level 35, he conned green / apprehensive to me both times, and I didn't get exp for his kills.

Upon returning to NK and handing the flute back to Cordelia, and upon returning the sheets to Vhalen, I did get experience (though not noticeable at my level) and the following faction hits:

+ League of Antonican Bards
+ Knights of Truth
+ Guards of Qeynos
- Ring of Scale
- Mayong Mistmoore

Note that it's two hits of each: once for the flute, and once for the sheets.

My reward for turning in the sheets was Selo's Acelerando. No clue what level it is.

One odd note. When I first arrived at the hermit's hut, there was an NPC named Theodore Exanthem standing right outside the gate to the hermit's hut. He didn't respond to hails, and when I right-clicked on him, he turned out to be a merchant with no items in stock. When I got out after killing the hermit, he was nowhere to be found.

Hope this helps you out.

Quick follow-up. Theodore Exantherm has nothing to do with this quest. Rather, he's part of another quest that happens at the same hut. It's called the Interrogator's Badge quest, the second in a series of quests out of Qeynos. Full details here:

Killing the hermit spawns Tsch Mal gnolls (sp?)
# Aug 13 2002 at 12:56 PM Rating: Decent
Killing the hermit cause 1-2 of the Tsch Mas gnolls to spawn and come around to the hermits house. You have enough time to kill the hermit and then leave usually, but if you stick around to kill him again right away, you may get the gnolls. I killed him, saw the gnolls on track, split about 100 yds away, camoed and hid. The gnolls came and poked around. When they were completely off track, I went back and pulled the hermit again..suprise, suprise, before I had finished killing him, the 2 gnolls were hitting on me. I killed him before they killed me, but they got me anyway. 2 out of 3 times they got me..not as 'safe' a camp as some people say...Slappig, WERanger 20

This guy has taken me from lvl 16 to 20 in about six or seven playing hours on my mage. Might have to do with the new adjustments to game that makes summoned pets the strongest possible instead of being in a five lvl range. In order to avoid the gnolls, I summon and buff water pet, park him in the trees outside of the compound and then med til full on top of the house. Gnolls have walked right up to compound walls while I am sitting and I haven't drawn agro. I target hermit through crack in door, go to front gate, lead off with cancel magic, and run for pet. Takes hermit about ten seconds to get clear of the house and compound and usually drops right on top of me when I'm by pet, but once i take a hit, pet takes agro while I nuke. averaged a blue and a half at lvl 16, and now almost a blue at 20 per kill. He is on a consistent three minute spawn. Not to mention now have several backpacks full of fine steel weapons. If you see a mage crawling through the Karanas because he's severely encumbered, help a brother out. All in all, good camp. Haven't died once in four levels.
Druid or ranger?
# Jul 11 2002 at 7:52 PM Rating: Default
This guy (a hermit) has really mean melee, I'd say he's stronger than a druid should be, plus he occasionally double attacks AND he kicks... I'd say he's a ranger but there seems to be a large amound of conflict on that. He no longer carries faction, so that's no indicator, besides, faction doesn't mean they're that class, it just means they're alligned with that faction. Hell, a necro could have bad faction with druids if they set him up to.

Great exp for lvl20-27 I've camped him two different times and only once did anybody come in to see if it was camped. About a half a blue bub each kill for me at lvl 22 (halfling druid)and I easily kill him Though I do have a great weapon to help melee so I only use stinging swarm snare and careless lightling. I also cast barbs on me before fight and keep firefist and other buffs up when needed. I usually have no probs with mana drain. Once a tesch marr did attack me I just ran to lake rathe zone, not far with sow which all druids should have on at all times. I also binded there so I could just gate back LOL!

Ummm how can you camp him at 20 when the mobs is 31 - your spells wont stick (100% resisted when mob is 10 levels above you)

# Jun 15 2002 at 11:41 PM Rating: Default
How about because the mob is only level 20ish. I camped him at 19 (halfling druid) and he conned yellow. Not only that but he was a fairly easy kill.

Kust use your DD/CoD/Hyme twist and dont press attack so you dont take extra damage from thistles. Solo at 19, very good ex, and you have enough time to heal before he popps. Stay near the house when fighting as your AoE song can aggro a gnoll that sometimes wanders near.
Get outside the walls
# Dec 16 2001 at 8:50 AM Rating: Decent
Get the hermit outside the walls to fight him it is much easier. I killed him 3 times by dragging him out, but seeing how easy it was I thought why run....... somehow he seems a little bit tougher when he is inside the main wall around the house. I can't prove it but it seems logical seeing that was the only time I have ever died fighting this guy.
err... Hermit

There's a really easy way to kill him, if ya have fear... you can fear him and all he'll do is run into the wall near there and you can just melee him to death... I dunno if you can get banned for abusing pathing errors.... but hey it's Great Exp, and i never lost more than 20 hps each battle

I am lvl 20 warrior and me and my lvl 22 druid friend kill this guy all the time. Great exp only got a pp split once. Lots of fine steel and he is even to me at 20. Tried soloing him, big mistake for a warrior, no healing spells.

Blue to me at 26. Easily killed, better with 2 or three as if (like me) you have long med times, you can effectively 'lose' a spawn. Spawns every 2(TWO) minutes. Almost always drops Karana & Cracked flute. Exp is very good. Often drops Plat as money. Occasional Fine Steel Weapon, and various 'Words of ...'.
Beware: A wandering Tesch Gnoll (yellow to me at 26) comes by occasionally and aggroes thru the walls (the only thing that really makes soloing hard). I estimate appx every 60-90 mintues. I believe if you wait(med) by the hut you are just out of its aggro range (not proven yet). I recommend this for anyone lvl21 up to around 28.
He has 2 main attack spells - Root (appx 10dmg) and a fire spell(9-15dmg) and a dmg shield (1dmg), he has never hit me for more than 20dmg, usually 4 or 5dmg.
I have never found him camped!
