Following the procedure for the other bugged quests in this line, I "Removed" the quest then used /say to manually tell the NPC the correct words. It gave me the 3rd quest and I was able to finish it this time.
What made me nervous was that I had officially finished the other quests in the line, but not this one.
I went down to the entrance to the valley to help the big trees down there in the fight rather than waiting up top.

It can be done easily since treants/dyrads/willows are all aggressive to the incoming treekillers.
Just get the task, go down to entrance to trigger the treekillers to come, then sit close to the tree, afk.
Back after 10 mins and task is done, get the reward from Hanook. :)

Task updates when you move to the exit from the plateau, while still up top - but staying there doesn't help you much. Waited... waited... waited... apparently all 3 waves had gotten bunched up and were killing each nymph-faction mob on the path up to the top of the plateau. Even L44 mobs... 9 of 'em bunched up hitting the same target makes this a bit rough.
Hadn't moved all the way down to the base of the path, since I wasn't sure if they spawned at the bottom or somewhere along the path... but it looks like moving all the way down to the bottom is the way to do it. Heaven only knows why the task updates at the top... *grin*
