Captain Gul is a giant who can be found just south of the western end of the tunnel that links the Giant and Gnoll sections of The Steppes.

You say, 'Hail, Captain Gul'

Captain Gul glances in your direction, looking you up and down, 'A brave one you are. You don't seem to know why you are here. If you are aching for adventure, I have recently been rather distraught over a most unfortunate series of events that transpired just a few nights ago. I had sent a small exploratory force further down into the Mines to search the area that lies beyond the old giant ruins near the rock quarry. We are desperately seeking new residency to evade the governing claw of Dyn`leth, but rumors of an [ancient creature] surfacing once again deep within the mines has deterred us from considering that as a possibility until recently.'

You say, 'What ancient creature?'

You have been assigned the task 'Lost Souls I'.

Captain Gul says 'The ancient creature had been referred to as Skullrend in ancient transcripts found within the mines. If you should happen to uncover anything as to the creature's whereabouts, slay the beast. Return to me only when the deed is done. Until then, be gone from my sight.'

Search the area that lies beyond the old giant ruins near the quarry of jagged rocks. Rumors of an ancient creature are surfacing once again deep within the mines. If you should happen to uncover anything as to its wherabouts, you may find yourself rewarded for your findings.

Enter the Vergalid Mines - Vergalid Mines

Find the Ancient Ruins Deep Within - Vergalid Mines

Loc 583, -2010. This is in the keyed area of Vergalid.

Slay Skullrend, the Bone Shadow Terror - Vergalid Mines

Reported location 450, -2100, -570. Possibles PH's are Bone Grafter or Clattering Servant. PH Loc is 270, -1831, -583.

Give Klazag's Amulet to Captain Gul - The Steppes

Your task 'Lost Souls I' has been updated.

Ah, a truly sad day indeed. This was not the news I was hoping for, but I will accept the fate of the unfortunate crew. I take it you found the creature? This is most certainly the amulet worn by a true friend and comrade, Klazag Clodfist, the leader of our exploratory force sent down into the mines.

You gain experience!!

This gives you access to the task "Lost Souls II".

Blocked Entrance to Deep Mines

Give people a chance and they will fail and give you all kinds of unnecessary info.
When you enter mines, kill ALL kickpick and skullcrush mobs.
Make damn sure you loot.
When you get an "Arid Indicotte Shard" that is used to get the key!!!
Then, head to the locked passage, blocked passage, where you will find large BLUE rocks, stones, whatever.
Stand on them and RIGHT Click the Shard.
This will give you a "Flawless Indicotte Shard, THE KEY, now when you click statue, it teleport you into passage.
Follow passage to you get to SKULLREND, and kill and loot Amulet !!!
To get out head back thru passage the way you came and click wall/doorway/etc.
You will be ported out of passage.
Forget ALL the other crap people say.
It's TOTAL WORTHLESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After about a week of going back to the mines to find Skullrend, I ended up clearing both the pools area and the ramp a number of times. He finally popped in the second pool to the West of the Granite Sentinel. Assuming that a Bone Grafter or Clattering Servant is PH. Loc is 270, -1831, -583.

Ok, I finally got this done with my 3 toons, and he pops all over the place(From what I seen, in that first watered area, but, if you keep clearing everything in that area, and he does not pop in over an hour, may want to check the spiral path going down the pit of doom, just past the first area, where the water is at, but, as long as he popped, and you first killed him, just keep killing everything in the area, and in due time, he should repop!), in the first area, where you come out of the first tunnel, in the "Ancient" area, he has now popped at the base of that tunnel(In the water, just outside the first tunnel.), then he popped to the left of the tunnel, on the other side of the hill area, where the mushroom is at, and first, he popped to the right, if you follow the wall along the right, just past the alcove area, in the water area, just on the other side of the small hill area, where normally Vu`Ryn the Stone Guardian and Velosk tends to pop at, just past them, and while I boxed 3 toons, I set them at the bottom of that first tunnel, and used my Ranger to pull everything to there, and you can root or slow him down, with the Ranger spell, so, it made it really easy to take him out, with my mercs, of a healer, a tank, and a DPS caster, and did not even need my other toons, at all, not even my Ranger, once I got him over to the mercs, and my toons were all level 77, and they killed it, like a hot knife through butter!

Ok, been doin this with 3 level 77 toons, and started at level 76, and he has popped 1 time so far, if you enter the ancient area, follow the tunnel down, until you enter the first room, and he popped t the right, near where Vy'run pops at, normally, just on the other side of the wall, right before the 2nd set of steps that you come across, while following the right-hand wall, there are usually 2 separate bone guys that pop in that area, and only 1 has popped so far, and if any others in any other areas do, I will reply and alert where they are at!

After the hand in he wants you to return to the mines and fight yer way down into the void towards the fake Vergalid and return to him with proof of your accomplishment. What he is looking for is a "void etched symbol" which can fall from any drakkin in that area. U turn it in and the quest series does not continue /sigh

No, his only con is his name. There is no faction with him. Same as the priest for the 700 HP clicky item (cleric spell so will not stack with cleric hp buff)

SkullRend is behind the keyed statue in Vergalid. He spawns right on the first shore by the water to the left of the tunnel. From what i've seen being down there and hunting he's not rare as many of the named in the mines pop pretty frequently. Killed him with a group and got the amulet.
faction needed/hurt?

If you camp the giants around him, will it affect your faction with getting this quest from him?
