This solo task starts in Icefall Glacier with an NPC named Malgen, who is located in the caves closest to the port in area.

You say, 'Hail, Malgen'

Malgen says, 'Me say hail you. Me not [talk good] at you. but me try.'

You say, 'Talk good'

Malgen says, 'Me need to talk so you do things for mer. Me need you to go kill orc wolves. You [do that]?'

You say, 'I will do that'

You have been assigned the task, Thinning the Pack.

  • 1. Locate the haven of the Dire Wolf Elders

  • 2. Locate the haven of the Dire Wolves

  • 3. Kill 3 Elder Dire Wolves

  • 4. Kill 5 Dire Wolves

  • 5. Kill 2 Coldeye wolf tenders

  • 6. Speak with Malgen

The Dire Wolf Elders and the Dire wolves havens are both up near the
Valdeholm zone. Invised, you can run around and trigger the first 2 parts.
The wolves don't summon; nor do the wolf tenders. Kill them and return to
Malgen for your reward which is a familiar that looks like a shaman pet.

Your task 'Thinning the Pack' has been updated.

The loss of these wolves will put a damper on the orcish raids. The Kobold
livestock should be much safer with the dismantling of the pack.

    You gain experience!

    no reason to faction grind

    Don't bother faction grinding:
run up as a 70 rogue goblin shroud (better yet, get a fellowship fire down beforehand in the right place if TBS+ - or a port - but running is perfectly safe if slow)
    get behind rock
keep sneak on but drop hide
    get quest
hit the return home shroud power
    zip back
    murder all the things
hail him at end to get the familiar - no need shroud for handin

Obviously if your race/class has sneak, well even easier, skip all the shroud bits :)

On Ragefire TLP in 2019 in TSS era for a max gear/AA level 75 raid shaman:

Solo'd from start to finish with one death when I tried to manage/kill a ten pull instead of just zoning to clear aggro.

Everything was root rottable. The only mobs that summoned were the named and you don't have to kill those, but you can anyway since they're at least somewhat interesting to kill compared to the trash you'll be dealing with the rest of the time.

First It was a few hours of faction grind, killing Coldeyes and incidental wolves in the area south of the Valdehom zone in. After the umpteenth kill, I was Dubious to Nightmoon Kobolds. Yay! They should be dubious towards me. I'll ******* murder them.

Then it took a few extra minutes to find Malgen cuz he's underground and the Brewells map doesn't show where you enter his underground area or how to navigate the rooms to get to him. It's not terribad, it's just a few rooms with small openings to navigate while invis'd. You can enter Malgen's stupid underground lair on the west side of the impassable hills which jut down on the left just below the Valdehom entrance. There's a little cubby type indent where you go in. Don't make me MS Paint a ****** map for you, you can do this!

I dropped invis positioned behind Malgen between some of his person-sized rocks. He likes to hang out between rocks which conveniently make you non-LOS to his pals, who, I don't know if they're violent, but they're ******* kobolds so be ready to teach them the meaning of being light blue if that's what they're after.

Do his dumb dialogue, re-invis, run around just south of Valdehom where there's bunches of dire wolves to tag the two spots you have to run through. When I did this some ******* mob saw through my invis so I made a train of wolves running in circles til I got the first two quest dings, then zoned to clear aggro.

Then kill all the things. It's all right there, just south of Valdehom, until you get all the quest dings. It won't take long. You've been killing these mobs all day anyway for faction, and are now an expert at their efficient deletion.

Re-invis and run back to Malgen, un-invis behind him between his rocks (heheh, Beavis, I'm between his "rocks") and hail to get your reward. Then G(ate)TFO

You now have a dope familiar buff with stacking mana regen of 6 per tick, and +20% to Dodge which appears to go to a different slot than the +40% to Dodge that I get from my Dodge IV item, so, ****, you are a ******* winner!

    I just completed this 8/2009

I killed coldeye guys at the start of the snow on the cliff mostly
at 238 kills I was still threatingly
    at 268 I was dubious

so my guess is 250 kills?

The wolf pet DOES NOT stack with the wizard's green improved familiar, but it DOES stack with the other three focus-familiars. And you can click the wolfie off and keep the buff as usual.

Level 70 Shroud Gobbie Rogue DOES work.

You need to hide/sneak in, and behind him, and drop hide (but keep sneak active), and /say I will do that

and hide again and sneak out, unshroud and go kill the mobs...

Once you finish task, Re-shroud Rogue, and go back in and hail... REMEMBER to BANK the Direwolf Totem of Spirit before you take off shroud the second time... and then grab it from bank and use it.

Just finished on my Cleric, will try on druid and monk.

Re-shrouding for the hail/completion was not necessary. I was able to complete it by standing between the rocks (out of LoS of the 2 nearby mobs), drop invis, hail, and then reinvis.

Our Duid tried to get this for group (with Sneaking). But the task was not Shared Task.
    And It's not timed.

Then our Cleric and Enchanter went back PoK to be ROG Shroud to get task for themselves.

I began this last night, shrouded up, got a soe, and some invis potions and headed to Icefall. I met a druid friend there who gave me a no drop invis and I headed into the cave. I got behind Malgen and dropped the invis and the hide, and stayed in sneak mode. What I found out then is that Malgen HAD to be facing with his back to me or all I would get is insults. When my druid friend got his attention and he turned away from me, I was able to get the mission.
    it's not really very complex

    1) the FT on the item is a buff, so other clicky mana regen buffs from items will overwrite this if it has more FT on the clicky buff. (like the one from the MPG group trial)

    2) this quest requires at least indifferent faction (maybe dubious, not sure). To raise the kobold Icefall faction you would have to kill a lot of the orcs. The reason people use the shroud is because you can Change your faction with any NPC to indifferent with the sneak ability; it has nothing to do with 'goblin illusion'.

notice i said sneak, and not sneak+hide . when you sneak you aren't actually invisible, but when you stand behind an NPC (with sneak on) they don't notice you.. they change their faction levels to indifferent. If you use sneak+hide then you are invis and the npc won't talk to you. Lots of times if you hail an npc they will turn around so the best thing to do is just say the last phrase to them , the phrase which actually brings up the quest.

I hope you all understand how sneak works and why players use it to get this quest quickly, instead of doing faction work first.

SURELY they can't have designed this stuff so you have to shroud up.

Cleared Malgen's 2 buddies, he won't talk to anyone in my crew....invis or not.

ALSO very curious if this FT6 counts as a buff?

    Or as item FT?

You can't even get Malgen to give you the bad faction message? I mean, he won't even tell you that you "are a talking lump of coal and won't talk to the likes of you" etc? If you can't get that message, then you have a very different result than I did a couple of weeks ago. I agree with you that going invis doesn't work. I think that the people posting that shrouding up as a goblin works possibly have the benefit of the goblin illusion. In the past, having a proper illusion could bump your faction up or down depending on whether the illusion was one liked enough by the race. So perhaps a way to get this quest maybe to get a goblin illusion somehow and trying to get the quest this way.

Hm, I just remember, the Santa Claugg missions I believe had a way to get a goblin illusion, one charge.

EDIT: Got this to work finally. Invis doesn't work, goblin illusion isn't necessarily the fix, but SNEAK is what it's all about. Like Kuryakenn says a few posts above, if you use plain ole sneak and manage to keep Malgen's back to you, you can get this quest. The way I did it was just sneak up behind him while remaining out of the line of sight of the 2 guards, dropped hide, and then said "I will do that."

    Current Confirmation =)
    # Jan 07 2007 at 5:26 PM Rating: Decent
Ellos folks...as of 8th Jan 2007 I can confirm the following becuase I have actually done it =)

You "can" obtain this task as a goblin rogue shroud, (I was lvl 70) just do it exactly as described; sneak & hide your way into the cave, have required txt already typed out, stand behind the tent, unhide but stay in sneak mode, hit return, hit hide. Run away to gate, or atleats I did =P

You "can" obtain this task "SOLO," you do not need to be in a group to get the task, & if you have the means, eg: you can kill IG mobs solo, then you can also complete the task solo, & I got the reward speaking to Malgen invised =)

That's really it folks I'm just adding my own little bit of info there to let you know it works goblinised & pretty much most of the info here is accurate, those of you unfortunatly who couldn't do it with shroud just try again =)

    Goodluck

Edit: I got my first two updates at following /Loc's
    Step 1 > 1755.41, -504.20, 496.64
    Step 2 > 1972.65, -896.08, 605.09

I only noticed one see invis mob while I ran round just as a point of note =)

Have fun & Take it easy

    Two notes:

    1) This is not a group task. I don't know if it was in the past. It is quite soloable by those who can kite.

    2) Goblin rogue works as described. As noted farther down, however, invis works just as well for those who have a version of the spell or AA that does not drop at inconvenient times. Whichever way you sneak into the caves, the key is not to be in the line of sight of Malgen or either of his guards when you target him and say "I will do that." The spot behind the small tent behind Malgen worked for me.

    This isn't working anymore.

EDIT: I meant to say that the invis trick to bypass faction doesn't seem to be working anymore. I did try this solo, so it's possible that being in a group could help. However, the quest giver, Malgen, acknowledged that I tried to get the quest and simply responded that he wouldn't talk to a talking lump like me, etc.

    Still works
    # Nov 17 2006 at 7:31 AM Rating: Decent
I just finished this quest yesterday as a 70 goblin rogue. Sneak and hide into cave was hard though because there were two regular guards and one named guard right at the main entrance that could see through rogue sneak/hide.

Once past them I was able to get into the cave behind Malgen and hail him to complete task. One thing I learned thoguh was if he turns toward you the sneak will no longer work and he will treat you like an enemy. So only hail or talk to him while in sneak mode with his back turned.
    Since faction nerf?
    # Nov 16 2006 at 6:45 AM Rating: Decent
Has anyone tried this goblin rogue shroud technique since the recent faction nerf? I have cleared the room (with help)of all mobs except Malgen, and then /said the required text. All I got in response was the typical responses mobs give when you are kos, dubious, glowering etc (e.g. "did something die in here or is that your breath" or whatever). I am told that it is because there was a recent nerf that now makes faction with Nightmoon Clan a requirement.

So does the gobbo rogue shroud still work?
    Hot trick.
    # Oct 11 2006 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
    Heres a semi bug.

If you haven't read the posts this isn't really that good unless you don't have a regen.

Ok heres the trick, If you can suspend your pets this will work.

First make sure you have "no" pet up or suspended. use Direwolf totem of spirit, get pet up, suspend the pet. Now summon your normal pet and buff up or toy up. So you get a clicky AND have your normal pet.

    Note:
When you zone and you have your normal pet the clicky dies.

    Hot trick.
    # Dec 11 2006 at 4:16 PM Rating: Decent
Works better the other way around. Summon your pet, then, while your pet is out, cast the familiar. You get the message "you can only have one pet out at a time", but the buff still casts. If the buff is dispelled in any way (such as by zoning), your pet will die, buf if you have persistent minion you can suspend him and just unsuspend him after you zone.
    Hot trick.
    # Sep 18 2007 at 11:11 PM Rating: Default
    Actually, you're half right.

You can summon your pet, then click for warder, and you'll get the "you cannot have more than one pet at a time" message. You get the buff icon, and the effect.

However, the only way the warder-given buff icon can be removed is if a) you click to remove it, b) you zone, or c) it's in your last buff slot and it gets overwritten.

This will only kill your pet if (a) or (c) happens. Zoning will strip the buff, but will not kill your pet. I've done this multiple hundreds of times.

    I did this last night.

    1. Shroud up as at least 60 goblin rogue. Below 60 he wont give you the quest.
    2. Sneak/invis up behind Malgen and his to close for comfort KOS guards.
    3. Prepare /say I will do that in chat window.
    4. Quick as a bat out of hell
    a, drop invis
b, hit enter to trigger prepare text (3.)
c, hit invis with shaking hands.
Presto quest started and his guards was not fast enough to aggro on you.

Sneak and being behind quest mob is the key. Not invis when you say the phrase.

Notes of interest. No mobs see invis on the way in. I dropped invis to check cons. I conned indiff to some among one a mob standing at the opposite wall of Malgen. Some conned KOS for instance both Malgens mates. I was really apprehensive dropping invis behind Malgen since the two guards actually where closer to me than I was to Malgen.

The method works, I was taught yesterday and this morning I taught a friend. At least four people I know off have pulled this off without deaths.

When all the tasks are done just invis up and swagger in and hail Malgen. :)

I did this also with the shroud trick, it works great. I just got behind him were the barrels and stuff are , dropped HIDE only keeping sneak on and went through text. I also dropped both hide and sneak after I got quest and got no aggro form guards , your safe as long as you stay back in that little spot behind him. I even casted the return to shroud NPC spell and no aggro . Now I have a cute little puppy by my side.

If you don't have the updated map, you'll have a hard time finding this place. I went in just about every cave i had on my map and still didn't find him. Had a tracker finally show me where this mob was and surely wasn't on my map.

Alot of people keep asking in zone where he is at. So I'll provide a easy way to find him. If you zone in from the south - run north - zone splits in 2. Left and right sides. Left side has the working spires - right side has Vald ZL and spire ruins(spires look blown up). Malg is on the left side of zone. Run to the spires and face south - run south along the left hand side and you'll see a cave thats not on map. That cave forks also - take the left fork and he's in there. You have to get the task while uninvised, so you'll need some help - however, you can do final hail while invised.

Some other tidbits about the totem.

1.) The familiar lasts for a long time - thought i saw 500+ on timer when i moused over it.

2.) You lose familiar if you zone, camp, succor etc

3.) It doesn't attack mob - just kinda hangs out and provides stats like wizzy familiar.
