This task begins with the Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born, found in Arcstone near the two portals to Relic.

You say, 'Hail, Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born'

Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born says 'Greetings, traveler. I am Ao, the Fourth Born of the [scrykin lineage].'

    You say, 'Scrykin lineage?'

Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born says 'We scrykin mark the attempts of Druzzil Ro to create organic life from magic. We are living creatures, just like you, but we are each born with a terrible [flaw].'

    You say, 'What flaw?'

Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born says 'We absorb ambient energy from the Plane of Magic. This makes us more powerful as we age, but also more hideous, more unpredictable, even more dangerous. All but the youngest of scrykin have become twisted monsters, creatures consumed by paranoia and delusion. I alone avoided this degeneration by abandoning my physical body and becoming a spirit. This was not an easy process, but it was the only way I could fulfill my promise to Druzzil. She has commanded me to help you and your [group] find the lost chime of Ayonae, the goddess of music.'

    You say, 'My group?'

Spirit of Ao the Fourth Born says 'Good luck, ______. Once you find your way into Skylance Tower, speak with my student, Arkahn. He is waiting for you there.'

Skrykin, flawed though they may be, are golems created with such complexity and skill that they are technically alive. The manual which Druzzil Ro authored during the creation of the scrykin race is known as the Codex Artifice. It lies hidden, locked away within the Library of Skylance. This book likely contains information on Ayonae's chime, an artifact created by the goddess of music herself.

Enter Skylance Tower and find the Codex Artifice. You will need the manual if Ao is to help you further.

    Enter Skylance Tower 0/1 (Arcstone)

Enter the Skylance Library 0/1 (Skylance)

If you're not sure where to go, you can hail Arkahn in the Skylance lobby. His familiar will lead you to the library portal.

    You say, 'Hail, Arkahn'

Arkahn says "Greetings, ____. I am Arkahn the Gatekeeper of Skylance. Ao has instructed me to wait here for your arrival. I cannot help you overtly, but I will serve as your guide while you remain in this tower. Tell me, where are you headed? The [oubliette]? The [library]? The [laboratory]? Or perhaps [Daosheen's study]? I can direct you to all these chambers.

Once you port into the library, you'll find four wandering "a scrykin historian". You will most likely aggro two as soon as you enter the Library. These mobs respawn.

Speak to a sympathetic student 0/1 (Skylance)

Student Joban can be found at the bottom of the library.

    You say, 'Hail, Student Joban'

Student Joban says 'Greetings seeker of knowledge. Though scrykin ye not be, I can tell that the quest the for deep knowledge burns within thee.No doubt you seek the [Codex].'

    You say, 'What codex?'

Student Joban says 'Knowing the the power contained betwixt its dusty covers was enough to create life itself, the Magus in his wisdom has decreed that only one who manages to bring [both halves] of the Skylance symbol will be granted the Codex Artifice.'

    You say, 'Both halves?'

Student Joban says 'Aye, split in twain the symbol was. Each half bestowed upon one of his assistants. You must defeat both if you are ever to gaze upon the pages of the Codex and glean its secrets.'

Get Gareth's Half of the Token 0/1 (Skylance)

Kill "Assistant Gareth" on the platform on the right. He is rooted and will spawn a number of "a possessed book" during the fight.

Gareth commands one of the books nearby him to attack you!

Get Venorin's Half of the Token 0/1 (Skylance)

Kill "Assistant Venorin" on the platform on the left. He is rooted and will spawn a number of "a Skylance bookworm" during the fight.

From between the covers of dusty tomes appears a strange looking creature.

Turn in the Tokens to the Head Librarian 0/1 (Skylance

The Head Librarian is located on the platform at the rear.

Return the Codex to Ao 0/1 (Arcstone

    You gained party experience!
Your faction standing with Fledgling Scrykin got better.

A chest spawns in front of the spirit. Among the items it may contain:

    Clasp of the Fledgling Scrykin
    Mantle of the Spirit Warrior
    Mask of the Blessed
    Spirit Claw

    Possible trash drops:

    Eye of Ice
    Invisible Man Spirit Dust
    Vial of the Escaped Genie

Library... Mob is "Student Joban", not "a sympathetic student"

    You say, 'Hail, Student Joban'

Student Joban says 'Greetings seeker of knowledge. Though scrykin ye not be, I can tell that the quest the for deep knowledge burns within thee.No doubt you seek the [Codex].'

    You say, 'what codex'

Student Joban says 'Knowing the the power contained betwixt its dusty covers was enough to create life itself, the Magus in his wisdom has decreed that only one who manages to bring [both halves] of the Skylance symbol will be granted the Codex Artifice.'

    You say, 'both halves'

Student Joban says 'Aye, split in twain the symbol was. Each half bestowed upon one of his assistants. You must defeat both if you are ever to gaze upon the pages of the Codex and glean its secrets.'

Soloed. 85 Warrior. Merc and Bot outside instance. Ran up, killed 2 historians. Sat until ooc to full health, ran up, burned down first named with books. Looted first yellow coin thing. Ran back down, sat until ooc to full health. Ran up to second named with bookworms, killed him with furious followed by Mighty Strike. Looted and ran out to downstairs and zoned back to Arcstone. Merc healed me, zoned back in, killed 4 bookworms which were blocking way to Head Magus, ran up, couple bookworms aggroed but did turn-in, ran back out, zoned to Arcstone. Done.

Jan 2009. We just attempted this mission. All mobs are flagged raid and no mercs can zone in, but it's not a raid instance. When we attempted to kill venron, he summons a bookworm guy every tick or so, which is fine. The problem is that he ports you away and you can't get back without running through the 30 mobs he has spawned.

    We failed... /sigh.

I just did this mission last night. Was hard at the end, we wiped just as we killed and looted venorin.

Our group was 80war, 80dru, 80clr. about 700 aa for war and dru, 1k aa for clr. Gear was mostly SoF groupable ( scratched hide/warped steel, no steam cores ).

The cleric tanked the worms, using her ds/self heal proc to keep herself up. The war dru took down venorin. Used karanas to heal war, and fernspike for dps. War has about 20khp/3.4kac buffed.

And by the end of the fight, the damm worms were about 30, running around the upper part of the zone. Cleric went down when there were about 6 or 7 worms on her, that was her limit. I fast burned down venorin, looted, and wiped.

Then we came back, after summoning our bodies in GL and rezzing,( druid port helped speed this up) and ran back in. Druid trained a bunch out of way, and evaced, then war charged to top, with defensive disc up and heal pots clicked, and did turn in, before charging out at 40% health.

pain in the a$$ mission. My advice: load up on dps, especially wizzies/necros/mages, and burn burn burn the venorin down fast! Maybe even use a monk or someone to train worms away if you can get that to work.

This HAS to be bugged, every time we engage the named we get, and I mean literally, 15-20 bookworms instantly. We are a full group of anguish/demi geared folks and there are just to many for us... Anyone else having these problems?

My group was able to do this (Skylance: The Library) successfully yesterday, May 28th. All we did was burn down Assistant Venorin as fast as possible to minimize the adds, then we all ran thru the portal to the familiar who guides you up the ramp. <Hint: you can drag corpses thru and rez. You will still be in combat if you had aggro, but mobs will not follow.> We then put a DI on our tank who had been our looter. He ran back thru and did the turn in and cannonballed back down and back to the group. My advice is to let the person in the group who has highest AC/HP loot, provided they are a faster class and as our looter put it, has "skillz." A druid, ranger or shammy in group will help, as they can cast shrew (not sure if run 5 is faster). BTW, none of the bookworms aided Venorin during the fight, but they will make it a PITA to run back out. Hope this helps.

As of March 21'st, this mission is still bugged. Once you engage Assistant Venorin, he will summon his book worms on every tic. Every 6 seconds he summoned another helper. This is my first time doing this mission and no one has related the information that he has a huge nockback gravity flux spell, that will launch you across the zone. With in 30 seconds there were 5 adds and I found myself stuck on a ledge at the top of the tower. This is no fun at all.

This is indeed an instanced zone (if you are waiting at the zone in and try to enter too soon after being assigned the mission, you get a message about it being too dangerous to enter, which just means that the instance hasn't finished loading yet). When you zone in, you are greeted with this message:

    "You have entered Skylance."

Alright, so I did this last night with a pick up group. There was a 75 war tank (I think he said 14.9k hp/ 2900ac), 75 necro (me), 75 druid on heals, 75 (I think) Shaman on slows, and a 70 monk for pulls.

I ran down into the pit and talked to Student what's-his-face, then we came back up and cleared to Gareth.

From the descriptions I thought this was going to be difficult or something, but it was actually pretty easy. When we did Gareth. Everyone switched DPS to books as they became active. and he went down relatively quick.

On Venorlin, we only got 1 add. I don't know if it was bugged or what, because we saw the "From between the covers of dusty tomes appears a strange looking creature" message at least 3-5 times. Either way, we torn through him like wet paper. After the fight, the single add showed up from lower on the ramp.

From on Veno's ramp, I jumped to the Head Librarian's ramp, then ran up and did the turn-in. From the top of the Librarian's platform, I jumped to the top of Veno's platform, then down to the ledge where the portal is and ran out before I got agro. Ran to Arcstone and turned in the Codex. A chest spawn with the Melee necklace, and it rotted because no one wanted/needed it.

Gareth is indeed easy if you just hit him once, back off, kill book, DPS down to 80%, back off, kill book, then rinse and repeat every 20%.

We did not wait for the historians to respawn before engaging Venorin, even though we waited for OOC regen in order to med to full.

Venorin is easy if you have the DPS to burn him down fast. We had a Shaman (me), a Ranger, 2 x SK, and 2 x Mage (all level 75). The time from engage to his death was 43 seconds (based on my log file).

Venorin's adds spawn on the ramp, so when you burn him down that fast, none of them make it up to the top to assist him. We didn't encounter any skrykin bookworms until we headed back down the ramp and ran into 3. One SK kited 2 and a mage pet tanked the 3rd while the other SK did the turnin. I think it's safe to say that he spawns one bookworm on engage and then one every 20 seconds.

The historians had not respawned by the time we finished, so I'm thinking that their respawn is around 20 minutes.

Even after the nerf it's still very easy and MUCH more balanced than it was before.

The assistant on the right spawns 5 books... always did even before the nerf. You need to mez them or offtank or a combination of the two.

The assistant on the left continues to spawn adds after he's aggro'd until he's killed so you just need to burn him down as fast as possible. With max resists you should resist the knockback every time. In three runs (with Bard resists) we never had a single person get knocked back.

Near as I could tell the nerf didn't affect Mission 2 much (if at all). And mission 3 is just absolutely retarded but even easier than before.

We just did this mission last night...and we had no bard so we thought we would pop infusion to kick resists up and make the knockback a nonissue.

With full resists we were still getting hit with the knock back often...I was hit twice, since i didnt get agro from any adds I ran back up just in time to get knocked back a second time. Once I stopped going back the monk then started getting knocked back. It *may* be resistable but we were certainly getting hit with it hard and often.

Still took him down, but only the monk survived the looting process, heh.

Really hard now. Cannot pull the Named as are rooted. One has several books, that seem to come alive at each 25%, but killed him and 2 books. But as soon as second assistant aggroed he pops a TON of mobs all over, no way can you handle them. They are like the historians. More and more pop. New start needed to beat that now as it is VERY hard.

Ever since the March 15 patch, the 2 named are permarooted to the platform. This small change makes it significanly harder. Here was our experience:

First attempt pretty left the books to the chanter. The books become active a while one-by-one after named is engaged. Also books have high enough MR to resist mezz around 50% of the time. After 3 became active there were too many resists so the books ate the chanter, then the clr, which resulted in a quick wipe. After lobby rezzes, we returned and noticed that the books still had aggro. When we entered the library all 4 books and the wanderers (which had by now popped) all immediately aggroed. We dropped the mission and got it again.

On the 2nd attempt against the first named, we concentrated on the books. As the books became active, we targetted & killed them. This seemed to work well as we quickly ended up killing all 4 books while only losing the wizard. But around 1 minute after the 4th book died, a 5th one came out of no where. I think it was a pop since I had only counted 4 books when we engaged the named. If this was indeed a pop (1min pop rate?), that makes this mission significantly harder. Makes me question whether a single chest with somewhat mediocre loot (other than the augs) is really worth it.
    RE: Nerfed?
    # May 22 2006 at 10:08 AM Rating: Decent
Well, It might be mediocre loot, as u put it, but if you are doing this mission, you are not doing the mission for the loot. This mission is a requirement for ToB access and that should be the main reason you do the mission for. So if you are not interested in going to ToB then yes it might not be worth it. But if you want to unlock more of the game and see more, then its every bit worth the effort to complete the mission. Just my 2cent.

For Skylance: Laboratory, you don't have to kill any of the spawns really, just the named. Just have group wait out in Arcstone, send in somebody (preferably with lots of hps) to click the 8 things. Won't be able to do them all at once (too many spawns), but can do 1 or 2, then zone out to Arcstone. Repeat until all 8 have been clicked and named spawns. Everybody zone in from Arcstone, kill named, get your 70 spell, a chime for theater of blood access, and the aug if you're lucky. Takes about 20 to 25 minutes to do it this way. Pretty easy to farm until you get the aug =) Probably get nerfed soon, get one now.

did it with a full group raidgeared, with no cc.

kill fast enough and you'll only get 2-3 adds, the final turnin can be done without clearing if you have decent hps.

    loot:
mobs: theresonatin screach AE is a pain - even with magic 450 I resisted max 50% and with atk-speed reduction of 30% your dps substantially reduces. Cure is nearly imossible as they recast fast - plan accordingly.
tactics: setup group infront of entry to library - scout where the historians are - if you get agro of too many mobs - just get out of library - they don't follow - clear agro by zoning/coth/evac
named on right platfrom is gareth - we messed it up by fighting him at his spot - killed him but were eaten by the books. Either pull him down or evac fast when looted.
named on left platform is venorin - pull him down into the pit - no prob with knockback. He spawned 12 bookworms - pulled them down to the pit. DO NOT use AE nukes - if you agro the students you will have problems - they are social!
Took us 3 h to complete - loot was crap compared to the effort

    The Oubliette:
slackermission - like 69.1 - go in smash the stonemites. Kill roamers. Kill egg - BUT single - till you find the one you are looking for - took us 30 mins.

Did this quest on the 1st night Ro went live. You absolutely need to have a Necro, monk, or bard to complete this. 1st pull the KoS mobs that are up on the ramps. Then pull 1st boss on the right and kill him at the door. (books will spawn on platform.) We killed books too just to be safe after 2 hrs of failing earlier. Pull second boss to the zone in and kill quickly. Faster you kill the less adds you get. Have the FD/fade class loot both pieces. Then have 1 person aggro the mobs that spawn as the 2nd boss dies and Kite them. Have FD class go to middle platform and turn in. 2nd time we tried this instance the FD'er didn't even get aggro. Then just flop out and return to quest giver. Chest loot is mainly 200/200 ish armor and weapons. Got shoulders once and a nice 23/20 1hb. (not sure of exact stats)

    Mission 1: "The Library"
run through the portal, hop down tot he bottom, and talk to Student Joban.

The key text for the mission update is "both halves"

Evac and prepare to really start the mission.

Clear to the right platform and kill named. Every 10% one of the books comes alive. Loot the symbol.

Clear to the left platerform from port in. kill named. This one knockbacks! (no lev in zone and it's a pretty nasty drop). loot symbol.

Clear to the back platform and turn the 2 symbols in to get the tome.

Turn the tome in to Ao the fourth and a chest will pop and you will recieve a character flag.

    ------------------------------------------------
    Mission 2: "The Oubliette"

Run around, kill mobs break eggs.

    Really it is that trivial.

the stonemites have almost no life. our tank pulled out a 2hs and disc'd them on each pull killing almost all of them instantly.

Kill one egg at a time as failures pop a mob. Eventually whoever is killing the eggs will break the right one and get an item given to them (inventory or mouse I don't remember)

turn in egg to Ao the 4th recieve character flag and a chest
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    Mission 3: "The laboratory"

I really wish there were more of these missions.. it was a blast... took us hours to figure out.

Bring a rougue or a monk I don't know if they see sos, but you'll want something.

the person who gets this quest is given an egg!
go to Skylance, head into the lab. go to the center table and place the egg on cursor and hit "U" (same as 7th hammer key)
This will pop an egg onto the table. Now you have 3 mobs pop and you get an emote in red text.

Every time you successfully answer the emote's directions, another lab attendant will spawn. These mobs are kos and wander the upper area where the equipment controls are.

Every time you fail, a zombie mob pops out of the egg and attacks. Also if you fail, you have to start from the begining.

There are 8 emotes and all 8 need to be done correctly and in order.... IE the emotes are given randomly, but all 8 will be given to you and you must complete all 8 with no failures.

once the 8th emote is handled, a named will pop. redcon to 70, about 1.5-2k hitter.. like all the others that look like him was weak to nukes/dots. beat him down and win!

His loot for us was an aug:
    Slot 7/8

We had some problems with this tonight, but we figured out some things that might help you finish this easier. first off once you get in the library, the thing you need to be aware of is, the agro range on these aren't huge, but larger then normal, and they can agro you from the ramps even when they are above you.. there to start off there are 4 librarians, lvl 70-71/72 i would guess. there are 2 on each of the Assistant pedestal ramps, and they respawn (didnt check timer but probably standard 20 minutes or so. what we did is started the library portion, I hit da, jumped into the pit, and went through the text Hail/Codex/two halves.. or something like that. then we cleared both ramps, and pulled the guy with all the white/yellow con books first (they are static and wont agro until he calls them), we pulled him right of his ramp and fought him on the main level and did not get any book agro though he did activate them they did not come down to help him. then we tried the same with the other assistant. he wasnt so easily fooled, it seems like the bookworm mobs spawn all over the place (or maybe just from all the books) needless to say we got to many and wiped. when we came back and got set up, all the bookworms were still up, and the historians had respawned, so we cleared them very carefully, moving counterclockwise around the main level as we got more room. once all historians and bookworms were dead, we rushed the named up on his pedestal and killed him there (we only got 2 up on the pedestal but we had about 15 spawn all over the room but they didnt agro us up there. we went all out on the assistant, killed, looted, and then tried to kill our 2, but we got some agro and wiped, i just ran off the pedestal, faded, ran around and did the turn in once everyone was up. the librarian doesnt agro he just combines the 2 pieces and gives you the codex. Also, on a side note, the mobs wont follow you through the portal back into the main part of skylance, but will maintain agro, so just get out of the library, rezone and reset if you get in trouble. I know this was wordy, sorry. I am not entirely convinced that the bookworms will come agro you if they dont see you, so you might be able to pull the named guys over to the librarian pedestal and kill them there, as we saw no bookworm's path up there.

The trash mobs suck. They hit our rog for 1300, but me for way less as I am a warrior. They proc a slow and another debuff, not sure what the second one does, and take forever to kill. You have to talk to a student at the bottom of the ramp, then kill the two named guys at the top of the ramp. The two named can be pulled down to the level with the door to the rest of the tower, and I highly recomend it. The first named orders books to attack you, but if you pulled him down you don't have to worry about him. The second spawns adds, no way to avoid them that I saw. A chanter is a must. We ended up wiping twice and got ran over by tons of mobs and gave up.

The attendant's -AE- a slow about the same rate as a bard song(60 seconds, but x2+ mobs makes it not worth even curing) and it is nearly un resistable Resonating Screech

They also cast a debuff that lowers damage mitigation Deafening Gibberish

All mob types of this model will cast both of these throughout the 3 missions.

The script spawns adds (bookworms)after the second portion of the medallion is looted to make it toughter to get to the librarian for turn in, we did have some losses and had to evac, this did not spawn any additional mobs for us except basic respawns and the bookworms. trick is to have Team in the pit area before medallion is looted, and then pull trash down untill it is clear, there are also a few kos books by the librarian that need killing or mezzing.
    bugged atm?

we ran through this mission tonight, and what we noticed is if you do not make it through in 2 attempts, its almost impossible to finish it..after the first wipe, my group all 70's.. druid, cleric, pally, sk, chanter and wizzy tried to go back in library we noticed more mobs up then were there before, if you cant get it back under control on second attempt, youll eventually see over 50 mobs walking up and down the ramps. seems to either grow by the number of times you walk through the door to library, or grow just by time, but eventually we did see over 50 mobs pathing in that room, and they all agro at one time..
