Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth and company can be found outside the entrance to Solusek's Eye in the Lavastorm Mountains.

In this monster mission, you play clockworks attempting to rescue some gnome hostages from the Goblins of Fire Peak. You will have one hour to complete the mission.

You say, 'Hail, Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth'

Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth says '_____, thank the gods you're here! We can really use your [help]!'

You say, 'Help?'

Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth says 'We're the rescue team from the Solusek Mining Company. The members of Expedition 991 dug into some goblin tunnels and were taken hostage in Solusek's Eye. The goblins say they will begin executions in one hour unless we pay impossible ransom. Negotiations have failed! Our only choice is a desperate [rescue mission]. '

You say, 'Rescue mission?'

Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth says 'We commissioned these clockwork war machines to infiltrate the goblin's lair. Unfortunately our best clockwork pilots were with that captured expedition. Any chance you could gather a [group] and suit up?'

You say, 'I have a group'

Clockwork Commander Widgetsworth says 'Great! Speak with my Engineer Cogswain and he'll get your mind fitted into a Fibblebrap Gem and installed in one of these machines. Don't worry, the soldering process only hurts at first. I'll be in contact with your team via the clockworks' communication geodes. '

You have been assigned the task 'War Machines'.

You have three templates to choose from (all optional): Clockwork Infantry (level 25 warrior); Clockwork Bombadier (level 23 rogue); Clockwork Juggernaut (level 27 warrior).

Speak with Engineer Cogswain and he'll get you suited up in a clockwork war machine. Once inside, find and rescue the survivors of the Solusek Mining Company. Be careful. The goblins have overrun the caverns, even the areas that previously belonged to the gnomes.

You have one hour before the goblins execute the gnomish hostages. Be careful with the clockwork machines too; the Solusek Mining Co only has a limited number in stock.

Speak with Clockwork Commander Cogswain 0/1 (Lavastorm Mountains)

Hail the nearby Clockwork Commander Cogswain to enter the instance.

You say, 'Hail, Clockwork Commander Cogswain'

Clockwork Commander Cogswain says ''Here's what we have in commission. Careful with that Juggernaut model. It wasn't really designed to handle narrow mining tunnels.''

You are ported into an instanced version of Solusek Eye.

You'll see Clockwork Commander Cogswain at the zone-in who will teleport you out of the instance if you ask him to do so.

You say, 'Hail, Clockwork Commander Cogswain'

Clockwork Commander Cogswain says 'I'll set up here and cover your six. You're point man on Alpha team, which means you're going behind enemy lines to find those hostages. Let me know if you need an [evac].'

Kill 40 goblins 0/40 (Solusek's Eye)

Goblins litter the caverns.

Free the Gnomish Hostages 0/10 (Solusek's Eye)

Rhino's Guide To 3Boxing MMs: Clockwork Chapter
# Dec 08 2009 at 11:35 PM Rating: Decent
17 posts
General Notes:
1st off... definitely try out the /dance command while in this MM. It is... awesome to say the least.

For 3 boxing use Clockwork Infantry (Warrior) for all 3. The rogues HP is too low and the Juggernaut is too slow and big to maneuver in well in the tunnels.

There are 3 objectives and a one hour time limit:
Kill 40 Goblins
Free 10 Gnome Hostages
Loot The Chest That Appears At The Entrance After Completing The Above Two

You'll have plenty of time to free the hostages following this guide. Your only concern for losing will be dieing too many times. 8 total deaths within the group will end the task. To avoid this: DON'T FALL IN THE LAVA AT THE START, for some reason any time I do this with other people at least one of them falls in and dies repeatedly. Also kill wizards first, then other casters, then rogues, then warriors. Finally, if a goblin is fighting by himself or if he's the last one alive then he might run at 20%. Watch all goblins when they approach 20% to make sure they don't run. If they do use a net launcher (clicky snare). If your out of snares then at 25-30% have 2-3 toons cast a nuke so that it goes straight from 25-30 to 0% without giving it a chance to run. The infantry have a clicky slow on their offhand weapon, a repair kit (clicky heal, use it lots as it recharges fairly fast) 3 clicky snares, as well as some click nukes and heat sinks (clicky haste, run speed increase and fire resist.) Save the heat sinks for when there are 3+ mobs or you towards the end of the mission. I recommend putting your heal and snares on your potion belt.

There are two setups of gnomes that overlap. 6 gnomes that will always be there (denoted by **) and then 4 gnomes that will either be in the south setup (from here on SS) or the east setup (from here on ES). At about 20 minutes in a system message will tell you which setup you have but you will be able to tell before then by following this guide. So all set? Lets go.

Start off by following the path around and killing the goblins on the way. At the first intersection you come from the north and can go east, west, or to the south there is a drop down and a door. Drop down and you will find your first gnome <** loc -578, -545, 42>. Then go south through the next two doors. Your now in a room with a big metal gate that you can click to raise and 3 goblins

The goblin just to the right of the door will aggro the other two if he runs to you. Instead run right up to where he is and kill him where he's standing. Then leave you group just inside this room and pull the two behind the metal gate to you. Kill them. You will leave your group here for the next two pulls. If by accident you get a lot of adds (don't take on more than 4 goblins) it's better to let the puller die without engaging than have your whole party wiped.

Send your puller south through the metal gate then through the door to the west. There is a four way cross roads. To the north are some stairs. If there is a goblin up them pull him to the group and kill. Then send puller back through metal gate, back through west door and this time go south at the cross roads. In the room to the south pull the goblins to the group. Be careful of adds here as you can sometimes get unlucky and get as many as 4 adds for a total of 6. Once the goblins are dead. Take your whole group into the room you just pulled them from.

To the east is a door. Go through it. To the south is a large double door. If there is a gnome <SS loc -766, -528, 56> in this room when you come in you have the SS. If not you have the ES. If you have the SS free the gnome. Regardless of which go through the double door to the south. In this room there will be two goblins and a gnome <** loc -845, -523, 42>. Kill the goblins and free the gnome. Your path now splits depending on which setup you have.

Instructions for SS:

After freeing this gnome you can go further south into the room to see lava. To the west of the lava you can drop down and follow a tunnel west. Do so.
The tunnel will have an intersection going further west or turning east. Go east and you'll immediately come to your next gnome <SS loc -856, -475, 19>. Free the gnome and continue along the east tunnel. The tunnel will curve around go up some stairs and come to a door facing west. Inside the door is a gnome <SS loc -824, -442, 37>. You can kill the goblins inside or just open the door and hail the gnome from outside.

To the north are more stairs and then a turn west. Go up them and you'll come to another door to the west. Inside is yet another gnome <SS loc -787, -417, 56> and more goblins. Go inside and liberate the poor thing. Then go through the door to the south and kill the goblins in the next room. This room has an exit to the west. Take it. Your now in a room with 3 doors. The one you came through to the east of you, one to the north, and another one to the west.

The door to the north is a dead end two-section room with 3 goblins and a gnome <SS loc -775, -328, 59>. After inviting the goblins to lunc... err crunch, free the gnome. Then take the door to the west. The hallway your in now curves around north then east without any intersections. At the end is a walk through wall to the east. Go through it and keep going east until you come back to the room with the metal gate.

Instructions for ES / Last part of SS.

If your on the SS path you've just completed the above. Skip to the next paragraph and your in the room with the metal gate. If you have the ES path you just free the gnome and you can go back through the big double door to the north of you. Do so. In this room there are doors on the east and west side and two tunnels to the north that curve around into each other. Go into either tunnel and on the north side you'll see a big window. Jump out it and your back in the room with the metal gate.

Go north through the barred gate and there will be a door to the north that you originally came in and a second door to the east. Choose the east. Up the stairs and free the next gnome <** loc -579, -610, 54>. Behind the gnome is a walk through wall. It's a miracle! After the walk-through wall go east and kill the two goblins in the room at the end of the hall. From this room turn south and go down a few stone steps to your next gnome <** loc -615, -671, 48>.

From this gnome turn around. To the north are two passages: to the north west the one you just came through. To the north east.... well go north east and out onto a rock ledge over lava. The rock ledge turns east and from it you can see and hail the next gnome <** loc -497, -747, 43>.

Follow the rock ledge east and keep going east until the tunnel curves south. Follow it south and then it comes out in front of some lava with a narrow path going north-east. Follow the path north east to some more goblins and a gnome <** loc -542, -931, 41>. If you have the SS then this is your last gnome. Free it, finish your 40 goblin kills if you need and return to the entrance to loot the chest.

Last part of the ES:

If you have the ES then just free the gnome and the path ends to the east of you with lava and land on the other side. There is a gnome <ES loc -518, -1001, 43> on the other side. Swim across the lava and free him. From here there are two bridges you can click to lower. One going north, the other east. Lower the east one. The following tunnel you can follow north without an intersection for a while. Kill the goblins along the way.

When the tunnel finally turns west you'll immediately see another gnome <ES loc -225, -1185, 49> right at an intersection. The intersection goes back around the corner to the east where you just came from, continues west, or turns south and goes down an incline to a door. Free the gnome and continue west a short bit to a door on the south wall. Go in the door.

Your now at about the last part of the mission for the ES. Your standing just inside the door on the second level of what looks like a stone fort. You wan't to kill the goblins in here to the left of where you came in and you will find a door on the east side of the fort to go in. Once your inside you can kill the goblins. From here you should have more than reached your 40 kill count. The remaining two gnomes can be reached by a suicide run.

After going inside the fort turn around. Your facing the door you just came in to the east and right next to it is a path leading out on to the ledge of the fort. The runner will jump down and turn around. The next gnome <ES loc -306, -1115, 35> is directly beneath the ledge. Free the gnome and then run like crazy to the west and through the tunnel. This tunnel will have no more intersections before reaching the final gnome <ES loc -277, -1004, 45>. The gnome is just across a short stone bridge over some lava. Once free the runner can die and respawn at the entrance.

Once your group at the fort has confirmed the runner free'd the gnomes (rarely the runner can get rooted and killed before reaching the last one) then everyone returns to the entrance to loot the chest.

Congrats you've just successfully completed the clockwork mm.

did this mission successfully w/4box on first try. had 2minutes left at the end but pulled it off!

i used to map listings given here but towards the end i quickly noticed i was comming up 1 gnome short in the South spawn locations, i hit all the "gnomes" and the S_Gnome" spots listed but only had 9 gnomes?! i did two suicide runs (totally for 10 deaths due to two wipes from runner trains) and barely found her on my last death!

the final south gnome for me was at
-783.41, -396.60, 56.68

sorry as im not sure how to convert that loc into a map notation but there she be! for directions, face into the hall way outside the goblin merchants room (merchs door would be first on your left), go down the hall and there will be a door on both right and left sides. go in the door on the right and thats the Loc for the final gnome!

another thing, i ran my characters back to the entrance and looted the chest with the first one i got back there (as time was short!), before i could run all characters back to the chest we were booted from the dungeon, so only two managed to get their shards of wisdom. be careful of the timer and make sure everyone gets their looty!

hope this helps somone out there, good hunting! =)

/edit update! went and did this mm again after checking my sola 2 map file to see if i did somthing wrong with the gnome locations. and i had them all there as listed. i looked at the in-game map again and i finnaly found the 4th Gnome_S on it. the map point shows it to be waay behind the Gnome_E positions many caves back. now i dont know if this gnome is actually there or not but again tonight i can 100% confirm there IS a another unlisted gnome at the loc and under the directions previously given. sooo ether that last gnome_s map point is wrong or theres more than 10 gnomes actually in the dungeon after the E or S gnomes pop. anyhow, this time around wiped once from a runner and sucided a run just to save some time and grab a couple of the close to each other gnomes in the gnome_s area (gob castle area). finished this time with an easy 10mins to spare and got a clockwork commanders hammer and everyone got their shard this go around. really is a fun mission! highly suggest it. =)

Yeah that other gnome_s that is way out there is weird. It seemed like it shouldn't have been there, but when I was left with 1 gnome to go and couldn't find anymore south, I just started goin kamikaze all over the place and found it there. I even verified it in multiple missions during that time. Stupid place for it, I agree, but was (still is?) there nonetheless.

It's at the exit guy, right in front of him. At least it was always there for me, but I haven't tried the mission in a few months, so they may have effed with it.

First, a big thank you to Queenkingfoo and Quadrophenia. The information they posted really helped.

First made an attempt with two others. Timer ran out on us before we could reach the last gnome. Did it again a few minutes later with five and scored a ring for our rogue. Only used the warriors and had very few problems. Great mission and a lot more fun than doing Dain1.

40 kills is easy,
10 gnomes should be easy,
Unfortunately the layout of the gnomes seems to have changed from a few months ago and they can even seem sort of random. I have been able to finish it since the change, but not at a great rate. Sometimes I come up short on gnomes. Anyhoo, imo the nerf wasn't adding 40 gobby kills; that's nothin really. The nerf was changing the gnome spawns.

Does anyone still do this one? I mean come on be reasonalbe about it, yeah make it a bit more diffacult for the gear, but 40 kill with in an hour and 10 death limit. Hardly worth the effort anymore. Nice going SoE, you killed a big chunck of you expantion.

Well, for those that have done this mission in the past: It has been nerfed/fixed along with some of the other missions.
1) Find 10 gnomes.
2) Limited to 10 deaths
3) Must kill 40 goblins (new)
4) 1 hour time limit
RE: Updated
# Mar 22 2006 at 2:36 PM Rating: Decent
I did this 3 days ago and it took us 3 times to get it done. We had 10min. to spare. You do have to kill 40 goblins and find 10 gnomes. Limit of 10 deaths. The XP i got was, I was at 39% when i went in, came out with 79%. (Double XP weekend) I was Lvl. 31 mage at the time.

Seems I could have grouped and gone off and gotten more XP, but it was still a nice change.

Don't fall in the lava, and use the heal packs.

I can confirm this is a rough mission now. Like many others, I wanted to do this for the ring. But after two tries we gave up. We managed to get the 40 kills...but finding the hostages was nigh impossible. Anyone know if they're still in static locations?

Yes you can. My monk is dual-wielding the sceptres and has two rings. As long as they transmute to something different than what you already have, you're gtg.

I can't speak directly to the War Machines drops but my warrior does have the Ornate Shortsword and Dark Whisperer from the Queen Nok Nok's Tomb mission at the same time.

I don't believe any of the MM drops are lore with the lower level versions.
Walkthrough
# Jan 29 2006 at 7:26 PM Rating: Excellent
Dawn of Rapture (Druzzil) has been doing this mission since early December and after close to 300 times through, I guess it is time to share. My wife and I are old time players (from spring 99) so we knew Sol A with our eyes closed. Descriptions will be the old room names. (Haven't checked the locs listed below) We spent 3 nights of repeated fails figuring out this MM.
There are 2 opening setups of gnomes in this instance, one we call the good one (easier) and the bad one (still pretty easy) The walkthrough will detail how to know which you have. At 35.5 minutes remaining, any unhailed gnomes will be moved to either the east or south, but with a little practice, you will never be in here that long.
Choose the warrior for all classes. Juggernaut is too big and therefore a pain in the tunnels and while the rogue dps is nice, the hp on the warrior make it up. After zoning in, equip your weapons and set your hotkeys for kick taunt etc. Your offhand has a clickable proc too. Careful of falling in the lava. Lava is the biggest problem with the zone until you learn it.
Kill the first 4 gobbies you see. 1)at zone in 2)at pendulum 3)in window room 4)on ledge above wagon. All gobbies are easy kills except wizzies. When possible, bomb the wizzies as a group before aggroing. Drop down the ledge beside the wagon and there is a gnome there. Hail and you have one down.
Through the door in front of you is another door and a portcullis. Pull the gobbie thru the second door and you will get the 2 beyond the portcullis too. Check for wizzies beyond the portcullis and bomb if there. You may get adds. Kill them all.
From here my wife and I do different things at the same time. She goes right after the portcullis, thru the door, go straight thru another door, straight through the secret wall, around the corner and down to a last door on the left. She pulls any gobbies on the way back to wagon for killing. When going thru this last door on the left, there is a door on the left with 3 gobbies and gnome just around the corner. The gnome sticks his tummy out sometimes and can be targetted and hailed without aggro. Run back to portcullis.
These 2 gnomes are always there.
Meanwhile I am finding which setup we have. Go left through the portcullis and up a few steps. Turn right and there are more steps with a door. Stand on the right side of the very first step and open the door. On the left side of that room, there may be a gnome. From the first step, he can be hailed without room aggro. If he is there, you have the good setup.
A) Good setup procedure
Two people run straight thru the setup check room, through the door and around the corner to the left. On the right is a door with a targetable gnome. Both continue through hall, down the stairs and through the last door on the right. Go thru the door on the left in that next room and split up. One goes right down the stairs and thru the door into the jail. The other goes across the hall, thru the door and hails the gnome on the lower level. Then they follow to the jail. There are 2 gnomes in the jail. Remember them, they are also part of the bad setup. Through the door on the right before the jail bars is a gnome across the crevice. The 2 clockworks making this run die where they stand. Ideally, you now have 8 of the 10 and 2 deaths.
Now we grab our other 2 clockworks back at the wagon (we each 2 box) and get back up on the ledge where we killed the 4th gobbie upon entering. From here are suicide runs. We run straight east the back way to the gnome castle. Do not turn left over the bridge toward kobold predator. There is only one way to go, so keep running through the gobbies and hope you don't get rooted. Run by another pendulum and you eventually get to a ledge with nowhere to go except lava. There is a gnome here on this ledge. After hailing him, swim across the lava and go through the right drawbridge style door. Again there is only one way to go, so keep running past the gobbies, into the castle. After you take a sharp 90 degree left, take a left immediately down the stairs. Click the button in the wall to open the door. Go through the next door after that and there are 2 gnomes in that room. We call these 2 the castle pair.
Mission completed

B) Bad setup procedure
You have 2 gnomes done and no gnome in the setup check room. One person runs through the check room and down to the jail, hails 2 gnomes and dies. Take 2 clockworks (or more) and run the back way to the gnome castle the same as before. Get the one before the lavaswim and the castle pair. Then continue through door beyond the castle pair. Follow the hall and through the small portcullis. There is a gnome just beyond. Keep running out away from the castle. There is only one way to go. (this is the front way to the castle) You will cross a bridge over more lava and there is a gnome just beyond. If you are lucky, you now have 9 gnomes and 4-5-6 deaths.
From here, take 2 clockworks and make the Kindle run. From the ledge above the wagon, run east toward the gnome castle but take your first left across the bridge. Turn right in that next room and on your left is a secret wall. Go thru the secret wall. Go left, right, left, right down the stairs, left and right through another secret wall (I think, lol). You should be in a square room with gobbies, close to one of the Sol B entrances. Go through the door opposite the secret wall toward the Kindle spawn area.
Take the first right and around the corner, we split up. One goes up the stairs, thru the first door on the left and thru the next door on the left. In there is a gnome. The other goes into the tunnel under the ledge toward the Kindle spawn point. Only one way to go and just beyond the falling block is another gnome.
Mission done.
A couple goals for you to shoot for. Our best time is 7 minutes with just the 2 of us. I also get up early on weekends and solo it after making our group of 4 until my wife gets up. (The bad setup is very difficult however)
We loved this mission. It brought us back to a place that we spent months xping when xp was hard. We felt like we were getting a reward for learning the zone so well. Best of all, the suicide runs have made this mission always a challenge.
Good luck!

Could some one explain this (particularly) the locations to someone who doesn't know sol very well this is a nice thing giving a strategy but i just can't follow what your saying for ****. Example I can't even find the 2 your saying in the jail. I find one in the jail (the room right before the room with jail bars in it). There are also several other random gnomes. So far i've located 7static gnomes and will hopefully post there coordinates in the near future but dont see how to follow the strategy above if I dont even see the gnomes hes talking about.

I've run through this a few times and located 10 static spawn gnomes. There are additional gnomes that appear in different spots, depending on the mission. Below are the locations of one such set-up. The locations are in a format that can be pasted into the soldunga_1 map. There are a couple rooms that have two prisoners together and are noted as Prisoner x2. Good luck.

P 787.4956, 21.3488, 43.9707, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner
P 635.7454, 887.2667, 53.9707, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner
P 623.2054, 757.3483, 54.1791, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner
P 1111.6234, 265.5820, 33.0020, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner_x2
P 932.9991, 547.8712, 39.1049, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner
P 516.1022, 976.6647, 36.0300, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner_x2
P 344.5061, 768.3818, 57.0386, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner
P 544.8225, 576.8163, 40.3265, 0, 240, 0, 2, Prisoner

[edit] Originally, I posted that this set of gnomes never moves. As mentioned above, there are really two basic set-ups for the gnomes. The locations I have posted here are what Quadrophenia terms the "good setup" (which I totally agree with). I will post the locations for both setups sometime in the near future.

Forgive me this question, but I was under the impression that all locs in the zone were negative. That is how the hard copy map from EQ Atlas lists it, and it is how /loc reports locations within the zone. Are these locations on some different coordinate system?

You are correct in that they would be negative in game. The format for the cartography system is different. It's upside down and backwords, so to speak (negatives are positive and the north-south vs east-west coordinates are in reverse order).
The way I posted them would be so you can go into the Everquest/maps folder, open the text document soldunga_1 and paste that text at the bottom. Save it and when you go in game, there will be labels in the map for the prisoners.

Does anyone have locations of the gnome hostages for the mission? I've only been able to find 8 of the 10. 7 in the citadel and 1 in the tunnels. Any help is appreciated
How many options?

I’ve tried this mission a number of times with the same group of friends and we have yet to finish it.

There seem to be two variations and you’re given a clue to which you have when the gnome leading the expedition says the hostages are either in the southern or eastern tunnels. Are there more subtle variations beyond this, meaning more options for southern or eastern?

We have located five hostages that seem to be static regardless of which variation you get. Our problem is that we cannot get beyond eight or nine hostages. We have experimented and searched and still never get beyond the eight or nine before we die too many times and the task is terminated.

Does anyone have any clues or hints as to how a group should proceed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Alrighty, since I first posted we've finished it three times in a row now. We finally figured out where the hostages are. I can say with some certainty there are only two variations. We found five "constant" hostages, meaning they are always in the same place regardless of which version you get, southern or eastern, the rest will move based on version.

I will find a way to mark a map or maybe I'll simply post with the loc of the hostages we have found. Hopefully I can mark a map and make it available.

Best of luck.

How many gnomes are their?? and where are they located?
Very easy mission

This is by far the easiest MM for exp gained. I 2box alot and have a friend who also 2 box we can rotate 5-6 sets of toons an hour which with 2x exp this weekend is 40-48 aa's an hour.

Helpful hint is that you only need to kill 3-4 mobs tops....suicide runs for the win!

I also 2box with a friend a lot and whenever we try to do suicide runs we run out of clockwork models (aka we fail) is there a secret to it?

I love this mission, it is fun and the graphics are awesome. Thing is I haven't found anyone who has completed it successfully, though rumor has it some have. It is very tough with only 10 deaths allowed to the group...so it is not uncommon that the mission is over in 10 minutes lol. Ah, well the day is coming that I find a group that can conquer this!!

Btw don't mark your maps where the hostages are....they move. :)

I wish you a heartfelt "Goodluck" trying to complete this mission now.
Since the patch of this mission it is imossible to complete.
I have attempted this mission 14x's with 9 different groups with many attempted repeats only to end in failure.
This mm was 'fixed' beyond being fun anymore.
A challenge is one thing an impossibility is another.
SO glad I got the commanders ring before they 'fixed' it.
