If none of the orcs respond to you, camp out & back in.
That reset them & the orc I had previously talked with who ignored me, now gave the text.

This task is the first step in the process of Demi-Plane of Blood flagging.
Melion Pell, Minor Functionary may be found at +3440, +30. You say, 'Hail, Melion Pell, Minor Functionary' Melion Pell, Minor Functionary says 'Oh mighty master, please spare me from needless intrusions. Did [they] send you to ask me some foolish question about where your quarters are or whose boot you need to lick to get access to a chamber pot?' You say, 'Who are they?' Melion Pell, Minor Functionary says 'Did they also send you to further their attempts to drive me completely mad? Me, Magnificent Melion, once master of Erudin in all but title, trapped here to tend to the needs of wet-behind-the-ears visitors.' Melion sighs. 'Fine. I will once again be forced to prove that my powers of deduction are still brilliant. You are certainly not a long-term visitor here or you would not be bothering me at all. You are not an invader because you have not tried to kill me. So you must be one of those that have been brought here to satisfy their desires to know everything about everything. It's been a long time since they've had any new information from the daylight and they must be hungry for it. That seems to be the reason people come here, they have some sort of [hunger].' You say, 'Hunger?' Melion Pell, Minor Functionary says 'They have it. I had it. The Master has it. I hungered for control. The Quartet hunger for knowledge, or what they think of as knowledge. The Master, well I won't claim to speak about him. I wasn't happy administering all of Erudin from behind the curtains, so when one of the Quartet came to me and offered me a chance to run the greatest library in the world with opportunity to run the daily activities of the greatest being to ever live, I accepted with greed. I knew that I would succeed. Of course I was a fool. I assumed that what the Quartet wanted was someone capable. It turns out that they just wanted a scribe and lackey. They wanted the best scribe and lackey on Norrath. Of course at first I thought I could supplant them once their superiors noticed my skill. After decades of trying to attain my rightful place here I have grown weary and they have assigned me the stupidest [tasks] they can find.' You say, 'What tasks?' Melion Pell, Minor Functionary says 'Hah!' Melion raises his voice in a single sharp syllable that bounces around the elegant hall. 'The things they make me do aren't worthy of me. They might be worthy of someone like you, but even you would refuse to do them.' You see Melion look you over with an evaluating glare. He continues his speech with his voice lowered nearly to a whisper. 'Perhaps I overestimate you. It lowers my station every time I am seen doing these menial tasks, but you have no station here at all. You could do these chores for me and I could give you some information that you might need. I have fallen far, perhaps, but I have not forgotten everything that I learned. Will you do menial work in exchange for knowledge? You appear to be the [purchasable] type.' You say, 'I am the purchasable type...' Melion Pell, Minor Functionary says 'Good to hear it. Some have made their way up the ladder in this place by simply pleasing those of higher station. You might be one of that type. If so this will be the first rung on that ladder for you. I warn you, though, that with my chores does not come my authority, such as it is. You will have to find your own way in this place and deal with the other occupants in whatever way you see fit. The only rule is that you must not tell them that I sent you. If you do, all reward will be lost to you.' You have been assigned the task 'Frustrated Functionary'. Melion Pell has given you a list of minor chores to accomplish. He's warned you that you have no authority in Dreadspire and those that guard the castle will not yield to your words. You have also been instructed not to tell anyone that you are working with Melion. Kill 8 bats 0/8 (Dreadspire Keep) Your first task is to clear out some of the annoying bat population in the spires. Yes, even the greatest administrator on Norrath has been told to kill bats and rats. Now he's telling you to do it. And don't waste your time on the little ones, he wants you to deal with the big ugly ones. Numerous grayfang bats are found on or near the large spiral ramp in the tower with Arturo, Trainer of Bats. Feed four hungry guests of the Dreadspire 0/4 (Dreadspire Keep) Find and deliver food to the guests in their rooms or in the dining hall. Good luck. You never know what they'll want or how hungry they are. Feed them until they are full. This is accomplished by giving any type of food (Iron Rations and various summoned foods works) to creatures in the Keep. Both "a dinner guest" as well as various Shadowmane creatures work, and likely several other creatures work. The creatures will say several things indicating whether they are full, whether they want more food, or whether what you give them fills them up (giving you credit). Examples: a dinner guest says 'That was tolerable, but not filling.' a dinner guest says 'I am satisfied. You may go now.' a dinner guest says 'I am not hungry. Run along now.' Apparently, you may occasionally encounter a dinner guest unimpressed with your offering. If you see this, zone/FD/whatever immediately, unless you can handle the attacking mob(s): A dinner guest throws the offered food back into your face. 'I've had enough of your foolishness! You insult me at every turn! I shall make you pay for your rude behavior!' After feeding four guests, you are asked to find a missing "necklace". Find the missing necklace 0/1 (Dreadspire Keep) One of the esteemed guests has lost a valuable necklace. Find out which of the orcs took it and insist that they give it back. They are always taking things, and Melion doesn't have time to keep them in line. You need to run around and ask orcs about a [necklace] until you find the right one (which orc it will be, is random): You say, 'What do you know about a necklace?' a chirurgeon says 'Necklace? Me orc, me not wear jewelry. Master not let us take shiny things from guests, so me not take. If me do and tell you, me dead.' You say, 'Shiny things?' a chirurgeon looks at you with sudden lust. 'You from da above ground place. You have round shiny tings dat have pretty pictures on dem? Dey look like very shiny sword but round wit da pictures on dem. You give me, um . . .' he begins to count on his fingers and toes, then stops in frustration. He thinks for a moment and again starts counting on fingers. Once he gets to what seems like the biggest number he can count to, he stops and says, 'You give me da thirty fingers of dem shiny tings for both hands.' He holds out both calloused hands and waves his thick fingers at you and repeats, 'thirty for da fingers of both of me hands, den me might know what dis necklace ting is you want. Give the orc 240 platinum. a chirurgeon says 'Dis good! Me likes da shiny tings! You no tell anyone you was here or you talk to me!' Receive Coral-Set Golden Necklace. Return the necklace to Melion 0/1 (Dreadspire Keep) Report to Melion that you have completed your tasks. Upon handing in the necklace: Melion leans over and speaks to you quietly. 'You have done as I instructed. Here is the information I promised. The first book that the Quartet wrote when they arrived here, and the one that they will never actually change, is called The Perils of Undeath.' You may now enter the area with The Quartet in the Dreadspire library. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
