This is the third task in a series of four (the end result being your 69th level spell/tome). It begins with Brovil Pallivineg in Corathus Creep (southeastern part of the zone: location -750, +375).

Speak with him once you've completed the previous two tasks:

You say, 'Hail, Brovil Pallivineg'

Brovil Pallivineg says '_____! You're back just in time. I've been studying Cicero's notes more closely and the section on the cocoons the shiliskin were trapped in has been particularly interesting. Guessing from his writings and with other information we've gathered since, I believe his disappearance was the work of the [drachnids]. If you'd like to [search] for Cicero's notebook or the fauna samples again let me know.'

You say, 'What drachnids?'

Brovil Pallivineg says 'If he was attacked by the group of drachnids that captured the shiliskin he wrote about, he himself may have become trapped in one of those cocoons. Since most of the drachnids live in that vile hive it stands to reason he would have been taken there if he were captured and kept alive in one of those cocoons. Of course there is always the chance they just captured and ate him. We'll never know unless we [go] find out!'

You say, 'Let's go.'

Brovil Pallivineg says 'When I said we, I meant you of course. You wouldn't find me anywhere near that place. Since you've been so helpful I do hate to put more of the burden on you. But, since you're offering to go, I can at least give you a place to [start] the search.'

You say, 'Where should I start?'

You have been assigned the task 'The Search for Clues'.

Search the hatchery for any information on Cicero. If he was there you should be able to find some trace of him.

Find a way into the hatchery chambers in the Hive 0/1 (The Hive)

The instance is located deep within the regular Hive zone. To get there, go to the third cocoon and enter the tunnel extending out from it. The entrance is in the first large opening (it is also marked on your compass).

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered The Hatchery.

(Note: "Living Larder" and "The Hatchery" are the same zone. Their names are used interchangeably.)

Search the chambers for any sign of Cicero 0/1 (Living Larder)

In a room to the southwest you find a drachnid named Wicyl, the Watcher.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'So, you've come after the gnome have you? Foolish adventurers, there is nothing here for you except your own demise!'

He's a shadowknight, quads for ~1,100, casts Harm Touch and Fear as well as Web of Hooks. At 50% health, he becomes invulnerable.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'I don't have the time to deal with pests like you. My assistants will see to it that you meet the same fate as that gnome you've been looking for. Enjoy the remainder of your short pathetic lives.'

He summons a few adds called "a drachnid broodtender" (also shadowknights) and teleports away, updating this task step.

Task Window Says: This drachnid appears to know something of Cicero! Destroy it and then search the room for any further clues.

Wicyl is now found in a room to the northwest.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'You survived my assistants? Impressive, I will have to take care of you myself then!'

You have slain Wicyl, the Watcher!
Your faction standing with Scions of Dreadspire got worse.
Your faction standing with Shiliskin Empire got better.
Your faction standing with Free Traders of Malgrinnor got better.

It sounds like Wicyl may have known something about Cicero. Search their corpse and see if you can find any additional clues.

At this point, everyone in the task receives a loot reward:

Lower-level Rewards
Melee: ? ? ?
Caster: Drachnid Collective Bowl

Normal Rewards
Melee: Hivegrime Stone of Deflecting
Caster: Hivegrime Stone of Warding

Hard Rewards
Melee: Drachnid Bone Mantle
Caster: Bloody Drachnid Collarbone

Loot from Wicyl (1 per task)

Hardened Chitin Arms (lower-level)
Molted Drachnid Chitin Gloves (lower-level)

Crystalline Webbing of Deflecting (normal)
Crystalline Webbing of Warding (normal)
Drachnid Cane (normal)
Molted Drachnid Chitin Vest (normal)
Official Expedition 328 Britches (normal)
Tempered Drachnid Breastplate (normal)

Blood Fire Wand (hard)
Blood Rage Pauldrons (hard)
Cocoon Skin Gloves (hard)
Dark Web Bowl (hard)
Soiled Plate Arms (hard)
Succumbed Victim Skull (hard)

Random Rare Zonewide Drops
Drachnid Ritual Mask (hard)
Fang of Bloodlust (normal)

(Optional) Loot 1 Hasily Written Note 0/1 (Living Larder)

(Optional) Return to Brovil with the note from Wicyl 0/1 (Corathus Creep)

Task Window Says: Bring the note back to Brovil. This bodes well for his hunch on Cicero's fate.

Brovil Pallivineg says 'I can't believe Cicero could still be alive. From the looks of this note he is in one of the drachnid's main cocoons. I would hate to throw you back into danger, but if you're up for it I'd like to [continue] our efforts to find Cicero.'

This leads into the final task in the series, "Rescue Cicero".

Wicyl, the Watcher no longer teleports to the other room. He slowly walks up there. He's unattackable until he gets to his spot and regens a bit. Don't think it was to full health, but they were above 80% when I was finally able to attack again.

The lower level [65] cursor loot reward for melee is Hive Sentinel Mantle.

A lower level [65] loot from Wicyl is Healthy Cocoon Silk.

Twice, in the same day, we encountered a bug in this mission (on easy). We'd clear to Wicyl, engage him, and beat him down to the 50% mark. His adds would pop, we'd kill them, but Wicyl would stay right there. We got our rest timers, but Wicyl was unattackable - we tried AEs, hails, sending the pet on him, etc etc. We eventually gave up and restarted the mission (again on easy) and again the same bug occurred.

Again, after trying various different things to fix it, our druid suggested we all zone out and come back in. So all 6 of us zoned outside the mission, and once all were outside, we zoned back in. Sure enough, Wicyl had moved to his updated location! We killed him and won the mission :)

There's an easier way to get to this. Get on the living bridge and go in middle hive and up the first ramp. Then go through the tunnel on the far side and you're in the room with the exp zone in. It's on the right hand side.

To get on the living bridge, is a simple trick. Have lev/invis and climb the outside wall of the first tower by zone. Get on the platform at the top. Then run and hug the wall around and land on it.

Decided to go back and do these quests on an Alt. For those who don't know (like me) this post is very helpful. The only thing left out is what "middle one" because there are 4. When looking at map it is the 2nd one. So if you use the invis/lev trick, it would be the 3rd one you come to (i.e. The closest one to the ZI would be 4, the next one would be 3, 2 {the one you want}, and finally 1 {the one furthest from the zone in})

P.S.

If you have a bard like I do, i had my enchanter outside the group when pulling this way i didnt have to turn off invis song, and worry about aggro. I forgot once and luckily only got one on the bard.

Also try to remember to stand near the zone out with caster so when you get rooted, if you do before the mobs get to you you get rooted there and can still click out.

So I boxed this one today with my main and 5 alts.

Paladin Tank, Bard, Cleric, Shaman, Necro, Enchanter

First off I wasted 3 hours trying to find the stupid entrance between deaths/afks etc.

So here is how you get here.

Get the task go to UnderShore. Go to where the Spider City is(left of zone in). Just like 68.x instances you can see the swirling spiral "upward" sorta staircase going up in the center of that area. Take it and zone into The Hive.

Enter the Hive, INVIS, Head to the first tower: Now here is where you need to be careful.

Soon as you enter the first tower you go to the right like 5 feet turn left, on your left you will see an opening, take that opening down. Once you get down turn right so your facing foward again. About 10 feet in front of you you see another opening going down.

*****IMPORTANT on this level there is a see invis mob that comes out of the tunnel right in front of you when you first go down. NOT in the downward tunnel where you are going*********

But if you are not careful you WILL aggro it and die. So just watch for it and go down. Soon as you go down that little ramp, you will see a tunnel directly in front of you.

Go into it, there is a spider but does not see invis, he is DB at 70 and you can kill him in tunnel without aggroing and you WANT TOO. After you kill him, have your tank walk up slowly to the top of the tunnel and you see a spider web, just stand in it, it's a trap and will drop your invis.

Re-invis your tank and yourself. Then head up and through the door to your right. Then go straight/veer/left. Go to the second tower, head to the right and go through the door, down the tunnel.

Now you come to a door. DONT go past it, get everyone there. Pretty much straight across from that door there is a Doorway that is full of rocks. That is the zoneline, but there IS a see invis mob or 2(at times) so make sure you run fast ).

Zone in is safe:

I used the pet pull method, but I was a newbie to this method so it took me a while and several deaths to get the named there. I even wiped on the named once cause i was being stupid but i smartly faded bard/zoned cleric.

Rezzed and beat him. LOL, immediately this huge train came and i couldnt zone all 6 of my guys at once cause it was too fast. I rezzed and buffed again.

I then pulled him again, without any deaths, and killed him easily.

Couple of things.

1. Using pet method works great but you better make sure your far enough away not to get hit by his AE :-)

2. Make sure you are invised when you zone out(if you can) or the roamer in Hive might get you

3. I could not track him many times. Actually when I first tried to pet pull him and got him REALLY close but not close enough, he like poofed. I couldn't see/track him, as I ran by though he re-appeared and killed me. :-)

I had cleric on Chain Ch, I was healing myself once in a while and I had my shaman chlorobasting me until OOM. other then that, bard playing regen, chanter nuking, 3 pets and necro dotting/Life Burn.

but WTF, as others have said, i got shoulders and then he dropped shoulders FEK THAT lol, so i gave them to my cleric.

I gated everyone out, ran everyone back to cor and turned in item with about 25mins to go.

GL :-)

Heh, a bard, shaman, AND an enchanter? Little overlap there=). Regardless, yes, this is a good guide to the mission, but I would personally recommend going down through the second tower. I went through today, ran the whole way, not a single see invis.

Also, that web trap didn't hit me. Never lost invis, did see the wanderer though.

What you DON'T wanna do is levi to living bridges and go through the third (from south to north) hive cylinder. Rest of the group died that way (a couple times).

Did this last night and found an easy strategy - pet pull the named and zone out any aggro. Wicyl never leaves and will remain where you left him. Both Wicyl fights can be done near zone in.

If you pull Wicyl to the zone-in he does NOT gate, he turns and runs slowly. His attendants spawn at HIS spawn point and bring the entire zone to you.

Best pet is pull Wicyl to zone-in, fight him and zone when he runs. Return back in, pull second Wicyl and beat him at door.

guess it can be random for some reason.
For most, it's repopping in the NW room.

Cleared zone-in, pet pulled him single to zone in. He warped to NW room and left 2 adds, kinda on a delay. They might have repopped there, or back at his first spot and warped trhough the wall to us. Killed them easily. The pet pulled him from the NW room to zone-in and killed him.
At 3k ac, highest hit I can remember was about 1100 max.

We did this today on normal with 70 pal, 70 dru, 70 enc, 70 bst, 70 rng, 67 rng. We cleared just enough mobs to move the group into the SW room and fight Wicyl where he stood. One drachnid added early in the fight, I kept it mezzed. At 50%, Wicyl TL'd to the NW room and 2 DB adds spawned where he had been in SW room. They both came for us, I mezzed them, and we succor'd out. Wic was unslowable and hit for 1272 max.

After we succor'd, we invis'd to the NW room, sat on the ramp, and started clearing NW room until the path was clear to pull Wicyl to doorway. Pulled and killed Wicyl. He was still unslowable, hit for 1272 max, and the 67 rng was AFK. When he died, we got our cursor loot, hurried to divvy corpse loot, and succor'd out again.

Mobs were half and half yellow and white (to 70), none of the white cons I tried placating were affected by it, but none of the mobs resisted mez even without tash.

69.3 bugged?
# May 01 2006 at 2:25 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all!

My wife and i tried this on normal yesterday with a boxed group of lvl 70ies. Had trouble finding the entrance to the instance, but found it eventually and learnt that you can COH up to the entrance, just time the wanderer that passes.

Anyway, we cleared a couple of spiders at zi. Then we sent druid with a pet to pull Wicyl. A see invis wanderer made it kinda tricky, but finally Wicyl came, with the rest of the zone :) Druid zoned out, rest of the group stood in the corner right of zi. Druid zoned back, warrior tagged Wycyl who was standing at the same spot as when the druid zoned out. We got him to 50%, then he said something and vanished, but spawned two spiders. We zoned out then, had 2 chars die, but zoned in again and rezzed up. Then we went to pull Wicyl again, but to our great dismay he wasnt up anymore. We waited an hour or more, but he didnt show up. We did what others have decribed they did, but seems something is wrong. We tried to pull the two adds to zi, thought maybe they had to be killed after all, they were standing in Wicyls spot. They seemed impossible to pull though, they would either warp on the pullers head, or just not come to zi, all the other mobs would :) So, did we do anything wrong or is this a possible bug (again)

I pet pulled him last night. On the first pull he was in the West room. When I took off running, Wicyl warped to the main room as I was crossing the moat headed for the zone out. Rest of the group was invised up on the right side of the zone. I zoned and they started beating on Wicyl when the adds left. Got him to 50% and the adds spawned. We did now even bother killing the two spawns. We just zoned when they popped so they would go back to where ever. He gated to the North West room. That pull was a bit more involved. Had to pull him a couple times because the other mobs around him run a lot faster than he does. After about 3 pulls I finally got him to the entrance and we wore him out. Good thing he stays put and does not wander back.

I never got hit with his snare on the pulls. I tried to keep far enough ahead of him where I was out of range or around a corner.

Hope this helps.

at 50% he will gate and spawn 2 adds when he gates hes none arrgo able but just kill the 2 adds nothing speical about them just reg mobs u can either mezz or root if u cant take both at once... (never tried without killin adds so maybe u do not sure tho) kill them then go look on map he was in SW room first now hes in NW room do the same pull cuz he doesnt move back but other mobs do this time he wont do nothing spiecal he will just fight and then u kill him and gratz!

Thanks for answers. We should be able to track him i guess, he was never on track after we got him to 50% and zoned. He was trackable when he was in sw room, and far as i can remember there were only 3 "rooms", the zi room, the sw and the nw, and we did do a couple of runs in the nw room and he was not on track or visible.

Havent had the time to go and try again, but we will. Still not sure if its bugged or not, will kill the 2 adds next time then just to be sure, though other have used the zone out tactic with luck,

There are actually 5 rooms.

#1 The main zone in/out room.
#2 The unused room to the north of the zone in.
#3 The pull through room to the west of the zone in room.
#4 The room to the south from the western pull through room where Wicyl initially spawns.
#5 The room to the north from the western pull through room where Wicyl warps after taken down to 50%.

Fixed & Working
# Mar 05 2006 at 12:22 PM Rating: Decent
As of March 3 & 4, 2006 this is fixed and working again. Completed it 6 times on those 2 days, both normal and hard settings.

No significant problems with warping. Using pets to pull works very well. Wicyl casts an unresistable root/dd (1k) every 90 seconds (Web of Hooks), so this causes some problems for the puller, but usually no more than 1 or 2 evacs or deaths and he can be pulled to the zone-in.

We completed this mission without killing a single mob besided Wicyl all 5 times.

When Wicyl hits 50% and the adds spawn, they do auto-aggro 1 member of the group (not everyone). Just zone out, wait ~30 seconds for them to path away, then zone back in and they will be gone.

Be SURE to carry a good size stack of insta-cast merchant-sold invis potions (merchant in PoK has them as do some others) and keep them on your potion belt. You definitely want to be invis before you zone out of this instance, since there is a roamer in The Hive who paths right up onto the instance entrance and will social-aggro 2-3 other spiders if you get aggro. Just always tap an invis potion before zoning out (or even better, use fixed duration invis spells, if you have the time to cast them).

Happy hunting!
