This is the third task in a series of four (the end result being your 69th level spell/tome). It begins with Brovil Pallivineg in Corathus Creep (southeastern part of the zone: location -750, +375).

Speak with him once you've completed the previous two tasks:

You say, 'Hail, Brovil Pallivineg'

Brovil Pallivineg says '_____! You're back just in time. I've been studying Cicero's notes more closely and the section on the cocoons the shiliskin were trapped in has been particularly interesting. Guessing from his writings and with other information we've gathered since, I believe his disappearance was the work of the [drachnids]. If you'd like to [search] for Cicero's notebook or the fauna samples again let me know.'

You say, 'What drachnids?'

Brovil Pallivineg says 'If he was attacked by the group of drachnids that captured the shiliskin he wrote about, he himself may have become trapped in one of those cocoons. Since most of the drachnids live in that vile hive it stands to reason he would have been taken there if he were captured and kept alive in one of those cocoons. Of course there is always the chance they just captured and ate him. We'll never know unless we [go] find out!'

You say, 'Let's go.'

Brovil Pallivineg says 'When I said we, I meant you of course. You wouldn't find me anywhere near that place. Since you've been so helpful I do hate to put more of the burden on you. But, since you're offering to go, I can at least give you a place to [start] the search.'

You say, 'Where should I start?'

You have been assigned the task 'The Search for Clues'.

Search the hatchery for any information on Cicero. If he was there you should be able to find some trace of him.

Find a way into the hatchery chambers in the Hive 0/1 (The Hive)

The instance is located deep within the regular Hive zone. To get there, go to the third cocoon and enter the tunnel extending out from it. The entrance is in the first large opening (it is also marked on your compass).

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered The Hatchery.

(Note: "Living Larder" and "The Hatchery" are the same zone. Their names are used interchangeably.)

Search the chambers for any sign of Cicero 0/1 (Living Larder)

In a room to the southwest you find a drachnid named Wicyl, the Watcher.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'So, you've come after the gnome have you? Foolish adventurers, there is nothing here for you except your own demise!'

He's a shadowknight, quads for ~1,100, casts Harm Touch and Fear as well as Web of Hooks. At 50% health, he becomes invulnerable.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'I don't have the time to deal with pests like you. My assistants will see to it that you meet the same fate as that gnome you've been looking for. Enjoy the remainder of your short pathetic lives.'

He summons a few adds called "a drachnid broodtender" (also shadowknights) and teleports away, updating this task step.

Task Window Says: This drachnid appears to know something of Cicero! Destroy it and then search the room for any further clues.

Wicyl is now found in a room to the northwest.

Wicyl, the Watcher says 'You survived my assistants? Impressive, I will have to take care of you myself then!'

You have slain Wicyl, the Watcher!
Your faction standing with Scions of Dreadspire got worse.
Your faction standing with Shiliskin Empire got better.
Your faction standing with Free Traders of Malgrinnor got better.

It sounds like Wicyl may have known something about Cicero. Search their corpse and see if you can find any additional clues.

At this point, everyone in the task receives a loot reward:

Lower-level Rewards
Melee: ? ? ?
Caster: Drachnid Collective Bowl

Normal Rewards
Melee: Hivegrime Stone of Deflecting
Caster: Hivegrime Stone of Warding

Hard Rewards
Melee: Drachnid Bone Mantle
Caster: Bloody Drachnid Collarbone

Loot from Wicyl (1 per task)

Hardened Chitin Arms (lower-level)
Molted Drachnid Chitin Gloves (lower-level)

Blood Fire Wand (normal)
Crystalline Webbing of Deflecting (normal)
Crystalline Webbing of Warding (normal)
Drachnid Cane (normal)
Molted Drachnid Chitin Vest (normal)
Official Expedition 328 Britches (normal)
Tempered Drachnid Breastplate (normal)

Blood Fire Wand (hard)
Blood Rage Pauldrons (hard)
Cocoon Skin Gloves (hard)
Dark Web Bowl (hard)
Soiled Plate Arms (hard)
Succumbed Victim Skull (hard)

Random Rare Zonewide Drops
Drachnid Ritual Mask (hard)
Fang of Bloodlust (normal)

(Optional) Loot 1 Hasily Written Note 0/1 (Living Larder)

(Optional) Return to Brovil with the note from Wicyl 0/1 (Corathus Creep)

Task Window Says: Bring the note back to Brovil. This bodes well for his hunch on Cicero's fate.

Brovil Pallivineg says 'I can't believe Cicero could still be alive. From the looks of this note he is in one of the drachnid's main cocoons. I would hate to throw you back into danger, but if you're up for it I'd like to [continue] our efforts to find Cicero.'

This leads into the final task in the series, "Rescue Cicero".

We had the same problem today 02/24/06 that nepeanx had. After named gated, we killed two spawns then after rezzing a couple and medding, we went to kill named and we could not attack...no melee, no spells, no pets, thinging hit him.

It has either been nerfed or is bugged.

Just completed this mission on hard & Wicyl dropped Blood Rage Pauldrons. Considering the melee reward for the hard version is a shoulder item (and in my opinion, better shoulders) I don't see why this is even on his loot table. Oh well, my cleric will get the plate arms one of these days.

Edit: Oops, I see someone listed the loot a few days ago. Sorry for the repost :)

last mission for 69 spell
# Feb 15 2006 at 10:00 AM Rating: Decent
I just want to get this thing done so that I can start using my L69 spell since I already have my L70 one. I am reading alot about pulling with pet to zoneline and then zoning back in to actually kill the mob. I can see this working the first time, but when the named gets to 50% and pops 2 adds, once adds are dead and he has poofed to NW room will he not still have aggro on the entire group? If I just want to get the mission done for spell purposes would I be better off just clearing to named and killing him to 50% then invising to NW room (or killing any see invis along the way) and killing him the rest of the way in there?

Wicyl Loses Aggro on your group when he gates its scripted for him to run. Belive me you dont want to fight all the way down to him you wont have the time to do it. Use the pet pull method you will save your self a lot of troubel in the long run.

Ok, the chest loot that dropped on your hard was worse than the curser loot?

Curser loot has 3 more AC and spell shielding but loses only 5 Hps?
6 Grouped with Mage 66 Air pet as Tank
# Feb 08 2006 at 4:44 PM Rating: Decent
My group and I did this with 66 Airpet as Tank. We did the Normal Version.
70 mage 70 cleric (2)70 Shammies 70 Druid 66 BeastLord

Wicyl, the Watcher was not slowable for us. we cleared the first 5 mobs at entrance of the Zone.

The we sent druid down with pet with cammo on us and herself and she set up pet to attck wicyl and run him to zone.

We pulled him to zone just a bit to the left of the entance under a hanging coocoon so on rezoneing of druid from losing aggro she would not aggro wicyl.

The zone in drops you over top a green cocoon in about about 75 ft away from the zone out door in the instance.
So make sure you get wicyl far enough away incase you have to zone back in and rezz everyone trust me we know this from experince.

Once we had him in place we went to buffing. Mage Air pet had all AAs maxed with pet affinity and had pet teir 2 Aug strength. The DON misson one.

We buffed pet with Cleric symbol Bailkor, Druid Steel Oak Skin and shammie buffs. Mage Ds and every other buff you could stick to him.

Mage used Suspened minion for a back up pet just incase their was a problem. Trust me its good to have.

With Both Air pets buffed and shammie pets and Beastlord pet We engaged Wicyl.

Everyone healed Airpet chained casting heals along with mage heals and mage doted and nuked carefully not to get aggro.

Shammies doted as well as crippled.

Wicyl hits hard and fast a couple times the Airpet was at 2% hps before getting a heal landed.

We burned wicly down to his 49% and popped the 2 broodtenders.

The shammies had root and the druid had snare ready and rooted and snared the 2 adds.

The Airpet and all other pets went to finish them off.

Once those were done we buffed up and got mana back up and readied to repeat the pull of wicyl to Zone in.

We finished this with Np and mage didnt have to bring up the suspended minion on that fight.

we ended up getting our augs and one of the shammies won the Blood Fire Wand.

It was fun we did it in 3 hours using no tank.

Hopefully this helps anyone who cant find a tank a lot of the times.

I can verify RottnBlackheart post -- excellent idea.

We did this mission with all lvl 70's. At first we tried to do it the traditional way, clear to named, attack there, evac with wiz. But after 2 wipes and wasting 4 hours, decided to keep main party at zone in & just pull Wicyl there. Died twice doing this but was able to pull him both times (2nd time after he warped) and killed him pretty easily.

I suggest everyone do the mission this way. There is really no excuse for plowing to the named unless there are see invis mobs in the way. Of course the puller will probably die in the process so use a ranger. ;-)

A few notes from my experience.
1. We had no see invis mobs in the way other than one wanderer that didn't roam into our path.
2. Nothing other than Wicyl summoned.
3. The 2 adds that pop when fighting Wicyl the first time are mezzable but highly resistant (chanter had to mezz them each after tash).
4. Wicyl will cast a root-like dot thus he can't be kited.

Ok I box 6 toons on this mission and I have figured out how to do it in about 30 minutes. It was pain in the but at first but the trick to it is have a pet class invis and get close to wicyl .. have pet guard right there .. then walk away from pet far enough that he will still attack your target .. target wicyl pet attack .. and run to zone .. he will follow you with a huge train of mobs ... zone out to clear aggro and then zone back in. Wicyl stays where you pull him too .. just repeat until he is at the zone in single. Then all you have to do is kill till at 50 percent .. he warps away .. and you pull him back to zone the same way you did before. Viola I have killed him about 10 times this way now. All on hard setting. Btw he is immune to slow so have descent tank or cleric with good mana pool. Gluck hope it helps

Just a quick warning on this one. I have used the "snare and zone out" method to split mobs here lots of times with no problem, and then once got nailed by a see invis mob waiting for me in the Hive when I zoned out.

I'm not sure how many mobs path by the entrance to the instance, but if you want to be really carefuly then make sure these do not see invis before you use this technique.

Did normal task on this today. Wicyl didn't port away on us, just walked. For pet classes : pet won't stop attacking once invulnerable, so unless you call it back, expect a train heading your way.

These missions are rather easy. I've done all 3 of the first ones with 13.5k monk and his 8k hp/mana shaman box that has a slow stick. I play an 11k hp bard and box a level 69 cleric with 6k hp/mana + ft 16. We had no trouble at all, just take your time and they are easy.

For mission one, We just plowed the whole top level of the zone including the insides of the towers and got all 9 books.

For mission two, we cleared around the mushroom at the entrance, also clearing the treehouse somewhat, after we got about 7 shrooms we cleared to the south of that and got the rest before we got to the fork.

For mission three, we just invised to the entrance of the southwest room, killed the 2 roamers in that tunnel, then invised to the room with Wicyl, killing the add first, then pulling him to the SW edge of the room, at 52 %, all but to the monk invised to the zone in. After that we invised to the north west room, and basically killed the roamers, and the first mob to the left of the entrance of the room. We pulled him there and viola, we won.
RE: Info npz
# Dec 05 2005 at 5:03 AM Rating: Decent
That would have worked for us too, except that the roamers in the large room to the west included see invis mobs, so after a first attempt, we were forced to clear our way to Wicyl, and our Tank seemed to have a bit of a brain fart and attacked the rooted add rather than the one on the Cleric. Once the corpses were dragged to the ZI and CR'd, we cleared into the tunnel between the 2 big rooms, then to the mob just west of the northern tunnel -- pulled the roamer and 1 more from the NW room to there, then Wicyl.

All in all, a pretty tiring mission...

EDIT: Text from Brovil after the mission:

You say, 'Hail, Brovil Pallivineg'
Brovil Pallivineg says 'Cicero is alive YourNameHere! With that note you found I'm sure of it. Since it seems our efforts to find him have been discovered, finding your [way to him] will be considerably more difficult. If you would like to take [revisit] your previous findings let me know.'

On handing in the note:
Brovil Pallivineg says 'I can't believe Cicero could still be alive. From the looks of this note he is in one of the drachnid's main cocoons. I would hate to throw you back into danger, but if you're up for it I'd like to [continue] our efforts to find Cicero.'
Your task 'The Search for Clues' has been updated.

There were no faction hits from the mission itself, other than the usual faction hits you get when killing Drachnids (-Scions of Dreadspire,+Shiliskin Empire,+Free Traders of Malgrinnor).

There's some few who see invis, though it isn't a very big deal. Clearing in works well enough, if there's too many in the way.

Maybe it isn't so in the easy version, but there were like 3 see invis ones in the way.

little info
# Oct 31 2005 at 11:31 PM Rating: Decent
In this instance there is respawn. The cacoons are just traps that spawn mobs. Appears that only the named sees invis.

Wicyl intially spawns in the far end of the SW room. He respawns in the center of the NW room.
