Cartographer Slipgear may be found at -285, +200.

You say, 'Hail, Cartographer Slipgear'

Cartographer Slipgear says 'Bzzt! Well hello there! It's always nice to see a new face! I get so tired of all the same faces and places, don't you? Unfortunately my left leg is jammed and all I can do right now is walk in little circles! Bzzt! This has made it pretty hard for me to finish up the maps I have started of the surrounding areas. Would you like to [help]?'

You say, 'I would like to help.'

Cartographer Slipgear says 'Great! What I need is really pretty simple. I've managed to overhear some of the new arrivals talking about some of the surrounding areas and they sure do sound really exciting! Bzzt! Since I can't go there myself right now I was hoping you could visit each one and then come back and describe them to me so I can add them to my maps. Do you [accept the mission]?'

You say, 'I accept the mission.'

You are presented with a task window with several options. Select "Brave the Ruins of Illsalin."

You have been assigned the task 'Brave the Ruins of Illsalin'.

Cartographer Slipgear has asked you to visit some of the locations he has been hearing so much about lately. Visit each location and return to him with notes on what you have found and he has promised to reward you for your efforts.

Gallowglass Arena

Gallowglass, the Arena of Illsalin, once housed the greatest games in Darkhollow. Since the city's destruction however, the area has been flooded with putrid water and overgrown by jagged coral.

Battlemaster's Conclave

Here, the city's elite warriors gather to pay homage to the Battlemaster, the senior warrior of the Illsalin Legion.

Infested Water Caves

These tunnels once marked the underwater retreat of the shiliskin nobles. Now they are crawling with squirming witheran.

Statue of the Deep Ray

According to legend, there is a statue of an ancient ray creature that went extinct long before the Shiliskin Empire was formed. It is held somewhere in the fortress on the center isle of the Ruins on Illsalin.

Imperial Audience Chamber

The Emperor's Throne, flanked by the smaller thrones of his advisers, rises up from the floor of a flooded room.

Wallwatcher's Citadel

Wallwatcher's Citadel is the fortified area built into the Walls of Illsalin. These tunnels mark the site where the drachnid invaders first poured into Illsalin during the city's fall.

Reward(s):
100 platinum,
You gain experience!!

The locations are approximately as follows:

Gallowglass Arena: -1375, -60.
Battlemaster's Conclave: -1935, +295.
Infested Water Caves: -405, +330.
Statue of the Deep Ray: -925, -540.
Imperial Audience Chamber: -2265, -465.
Wallwatcher's Citadel: -200, -640.

When you have scouted them all:

Corathus Creep: Return to Cartographer Slipgear

You say, 'Hail, Cartographer Slipgear'

Your task 'Brave the Ruins of Illsalin' has been updated.

Cartographer Slipgear says 'Wow this is fantastic! You captured a lot of details here! This will really help me flesh out my maps. Here is a little something for your troubles, friend, and I think you will find that the item I gave you before has grown slightly in power during your travels! A truly marvelous item! Bzzt!'

Your faction standing with Expedition 328 got better.
Your faction standing with Creep Reapers got worse.
You receive 100 platinum .

IVU, not invis in this zone

This is by far the easier one between this and the Hive.

First off, people need to stop saying something "sees through invis", when that creature is actually undead. A mob that sees through invis sees through whatever type of invis would otherwise affect that mob. It's as silly as someone saying "that mob sees through IVU!!!". Well duh.

Understanding this, the only mobs that actually see through invis are the water creatures in the various tunnels. This means that the only way to get two the two locations up in the back area (Conclave and Audience Chamber) is to use levitation. Just make sure you've got one ready and it's a piece of cake.

Best way to do this is to hit the "outside" ones first. Using normal invis, swim down to just outside the Infested water cave to get that one (you don't have to enter or come within agro range of anything). Ditto for the Arena, although keep an eye out of occasional undead that'll pop out just on the outside of the wall. You just need to get right near the wall at the right spot to trigger the task stage. I say do this with invis because there are some non-undead mobs swimming around in the water.

The statue and Citadel are super easy. Just swim out of the water near the taskgiver guy (should be out of agro of everything there). Use IVU. Run up the hill to one of the tower entrances (I entered at the West side where the broken bridge is). Drop down and go inside. Every single mob in there is undead. Coming from the west, you go into the main chamber, hang a right. Go up the ramp. Walk in a short distance and get statue stage. Turn around and go back down ramp. Go straight north through the door and across the bridge to the citadel. Enter, hang a right, go up a ramp. Citadel done. Reverse direction and come back out.

For the last two simply Cast levitate and head directly across to the wall to the right of the broken bridge. As described elsewhere, with levitate you can work your way up that wall and then to the left and drop onto the end of the bridge. Stay to the left side as you travel around since there are some deep orcs in the tunnel entrance (where you would have come in if you'd gone through the infested cave). Cast another IVU and head in. Once again, all mobs are undead. They don't "see invis". They are undead. Use the correct invisibility and it's trivial. Just avoid the named mobs and it's a piece of cake. The instructions a couple posts below this are perfect.

I did all of the Slipgear tasks using nothing but cloudy potions and IVU. There is no need for shrouds if you don't feel like it.

Wallwatcher's Citadel is difficult to do by suicide run since the mobs stun and they're packed tight in the rooms right before the update room. Easiest way to do this, once you're up on the bridge, is to have a friend aggro the mobs behind the sliding door. (Quester can either wait on the bridge or stay on the hillside to stay completely out of aggro range.) He should run them to the broken spot on the bridge and then jump off. The mobs will run back and forth frantically on the bridge for a few seconds. Usually they then warp into the water to follow the puller. Best to wait for them to do that. But even if you don't, they will usually not aggro onto a second party while they still have the puller at the top of their hate list. So the quester can now make the run past the sliding door, turn right go up the ramp, run straight ahead bearing slightly left to get the update. The mobs in the update room have a slight delay on aggroing so the quester, if he doesn't have any kind of instant evac or gate ability, might be able to turn around, reverse direction, go back out the door and run helter skelter to the zone.

Failing this, he can die and summon his corpse. ;)

PS It's rather surprising how much of this can be done just using regular sneak (as a halfling) and IVU potions. I've managed to sneak through rooms packed with mobs just making sure to sneak past in such a way that I don't approach any mob from the front quarter. It's nerve-wracking but a load of fun.

Completed the Illsalin part of the slipgear quest this morning(12-3-2006). It is very easy to do actually. Using the 70 rogue shroud, I did all of the points except Conclave & Audience Chamber by running to the locs on the map. Not going to say how to get to those as it's pretty straightforward.

To do the Conclave & Audience Chamber, you dont have to go anywhere near the witherans in the underwater tunnel. With levitation on, run to neg 710, pos 155(anywhere near that loc is fine).

This will put you at the bottom of a steep hillside below the broken walkway. Face west, look up, and move side to side & forward. this will take some practice, but eventually you will get up to a spot where you can face south, and float onto the broken walkway. Follow the walkway a few steps south & turn west, you'll be going thru that doorway to the Conclave spot. Turn on Hide/sneak. The guards outside the door shouldnt see you, but always double check. Note: I believe their aggro radius is very small anyways, as I check it with my cleric with invis on, and actually walked past them into the door without aggro. Anyways sos should be fine.

Go west past those guards into the room. Drachnids will be in there but shouldnt see you. You will be taking a left into the only other passage in there. Follow that passage up to the next room, where Illsalins are. They shouldnt see you either. Go straight thru to the next passage. Follow that passage to the next room.

In the next room, take the second left, which will put you outside in the arena area. Once outside, take a right & follow the edge to the next right back into the next room & the update spot(I believe you get the update before you even enter the room, cant remember). Once update, back up back out to the arena, and go left(east) & take the last right back into the same room. On the left wall is the secret door(should be marked on your map hopefully). Secret door loc is neg 2015, pos 40.

Follow that passage east to the next room. Once you go thru that door, hang a right and follow the wall south. Loc of that update is approx neg 2270, neg 450.

Nothing saw thru my sos in this zone for the update spots needed, but as always double check any mobs you are near. Good luck!

I did this without a rogue shroud and just IVU potions. Thanks for the directions, they worked great.

I can verify, my wiz did it with lev and invis to undead and this worked perfectly. You go up that slope easily and from then it's just watching your ivu for when it fades and mine did a couple times but not where I couldn't recast.

For the Statue of the Deep Ray and Wallwatcher's Citadel a level 70 rogue shroud worked.

For Gallowglass and Infested Water Caves, just normal invis and swimming did the trick.

Finally have knocked this out and The Hive and maxed my Slipgear Gem.

Yes it would seem this quest was nerfed. I have done it several times in the past and never had any trouble. I have died 3 times now because of so many mobs seeing past rogue invis. HAd one catch me in undershore and the other 3 times was in the ruins zone. I don't see any possible way to get through the underwater cave now. I tried 3 times and there is just too many see invis mobs to sneak past. They don't see SNEAK but they do see through the hide. I have tried different routes but its just too tight of an area.

So anyways SOE can take this quest and stick it! I guess now that this is a older expansion they feel the need to nerf it.

How do I get into secret door for imperial chamber
# Jul 10 2006 at 10:58 AM Rating: Decent
I didn't use the secret door to get into chamber, you can get there by going up wall at the two northern entrances. It's tricky, but if you follow the wall from the broken bridge around, you will be high enough to get the "sweet spot" that allows you to climb above the entrances, so that you have to actually drop down to get into chamber. Saw your question in guildchat, Z, but you had already camped. I did this chamber before doing the battlemasters room, and just followed the map down to the secret door to access that room.
Getting to the Imperial Audience Chamber?
# May 02 2006 at 6:50 PM Rating: Decent
Getting to the Imperial Audience Chamber is a major pain in the a$$. I have tried to float over but fall short with a Farrie shroud and being a necro as well. Necro seems to be able to get me down through the hole and under because the invis to the undead spell. But when I come up I got to pass thru the big room and to the secret entrance and there is a see invis there. He and his 4 buddies make short order me and my whimppy pet when I pass. Any ideas?

Edited, Tue May 2 19:52:14 2006

Tried the Goblin shourd but the see invis mobs beat me down. The way I got past was to send the pet on the see invis guy ,then run past to a safe spot and FD. Then stand up make a new pet and invis. Used it twice. It works!

Started and finished this quest today. Devler's post was a great help. Another helpful thing was the map points listed with the depth (the third set of numbers on some of the posts, that lets you know if something is above or below you). It took me a bit to find one of the underwater tunnels until I had that.

The citdel took three times to get it done. I did the run up the wall and lev to the bridge thing which went fine all three times. In fairy form I then attempted to enter the open slow moving door and died instantly. There was a mob on both sides of the door. I went back and noted which they were and looked them up. The one to the right could see invis, and the one to the left was undead, which also see invis. Here is what I did. I shrouded into Goblin form and got a lev ring to get there. I want to note that in this form with sneak and hide, I could get pretty close to the mobs without being seen. With the sneak and hide on, I walked to the door careful to be closer to the side that the undead mob was on. I clicked the door to open it and strolled the the point that I needed. (Before I went out there to try the goblin shroud on that task, I took it to gunthak and tested it on the undead. I stood there, jumped around, and hailed the mobs with the sneak hide on, and none saw me, I then dropped the hide and sneak and they were on me that same instant) I did the rest of the points in goblin form without trouble.

Sneak / Hide is a skill and as such it can work on some mobs and no on others.. If you see a mob before it slaughters you, you can back up, unhide / sneak then rehide and sneak and try again.

I did this in a lvl 65 goblin shroud.

Would be interested to know if you lose less experience with death in a lower shroud. (Or any at all considering you were a 5) I did this in lvl 60 shroud and can confirm the loss of exp.

# Jan 18 2006 at 6:55 AM Rating: Decent
Did this on my 70 sk. Took me about 4 hrs and I died from a wicked dot from drachnid in Illisal. (sp). Had no outside buffs and very little experience in any of these zones so I am sure others can do it as well.

If you have insta-click invis and aa fd no need to shroud. Alot of times you can just run past the danger and fd. saves time from conning everything.
My way to reach Conclave and Audience Rooms
# Dec 13 2005 at 10:31 PM Rating: Decent
I used a stoopid Fairy Shroud with Invisi and Flight (float).

From zone-in I'd run straight ahed past mission NPC up next to Watcher, then run up the incline next to watcher to get some altitude the run to center bridge span directly South, then run the ledge to my left to enter Imperial Chamber. I'd then bum rush the Throne to get quest task done. Die...
Again, very carefully get past zombies in arena and find the hole just like the others did. If you hang next to the back wall while the zombies are running around in front of you you will see where they fall in the hole (enterance to tunnel) then pop up again.

Rest of zone is a cake walk.

Haul butt back to GH for multi rezzes/summons to get exp back.

Good luck.

there is an underwater tunnel in the gallowglass arena that will lead you to the battlemaster's conclave. there is a fake wall in the battlemaster's conclave area that will lead you to the imperial audience chamber. as i understand it from a guildmate. the fake wall looks very smooth.

sorry i don't remember the location of the underwater tunnel. kind of just stumbled onto it.

haven't actually gotten to the audience chamber yet. my sneak dropped and i got killed just as i found out about it.

I want to thank you sooo much. I tried this today, and the locations were where you said they would be. This is now complete.

On a side note, only 1 mob saw invis during this, an illisian guard. He was just before the Battlemaster's Conclave. For me, this wasn't an issue, at first. For my wife it was. Her top level gobby was 55. He nailed her a few times before we got it right and got her through. I had to attack and then die for her to get through. When I went back, I hugged the right wall, but this time, he saw me right away. I had RS 4 built up, so I ran for it anyways. I made the final point (Imperial Audience Chamber) and stopped. I had enough time to turn around and discover 15-20 mobs running at me, all red. I just about fell off my chair, I wasn't prepared to see that, but funny. I might go do it again and try to screen cap it.

RE: How to survive?

There may be some things there that see invis, but I completed this stage the other night using the 65th Goblin shroud and nothing saw me. I got very lost a few times and wandered all over the zone too - I didn't see any nameds so perhaps it is only those that see through invis?
