This task begins in the Plane of Knowledge with Castlen Drewe, who can be found across from the Soulbinder at -97, -45. It is one of seven tasks introduced for players from level 10 to 20.

You say, 'Hail, Castlen Drewe'

Castlen Drewe says 'Greetings and welcome. I have been compiling reports from all over Norrath! There are many odd jobs to be done by someone like you. Would you be interested in such a [quest]?'

You say, 'I'm interested in a quest'

You have been assigned the task 'Within the Warrens'.

The Warrens is home to a tribe of kobolds know as Clan Kolbok. These kobolds in particular are rather advanced and very aggressive. They have recently slain a resident of New Tanaan who was attempting to travel to the Stonebrunt Mountains. We can only assume that it was they, for he was never seen again. We believe that some trinket may have been presented to their Prince Bragnar as evidence of this slaying. Take the portal to Paineel and explore the bridge area outside of the prince's throne room within the Warrens. Be careful!

Explore the bridged waterway near Prince Bragnar 0/1 (The Warrens)

Kill 5 kobold protectors 0/5 (The Warrens)

Loot 10 kobold hides 0/10 (The Warrens)

Loot 10 kobold meat 0/10 (The Warrens)

Speak with Castlen Drewe 0/1 (Plane of Knowledge)

You say, 'Hail, Castlen Drewe'

Very well done. One of our tailors has fashioned this mask for you, I do hope that you find it useful.

You gain experience!!

You have been given: Kobold-Hide Mask

I'd like to add a little extra "treat" found in this quest: there is usually a mob sitting fishing in a little bay at one side of the river. You need to swim to get to him but he will drop Fishing Bait, so if you do this every so often, wow, free fishing bait!

Oh, and the hides now do stack!

I found killing the four kobolds in the alcove before the room with the bridge and killing the kobolds in front of and on the bridge would spawn Protectors. The random place holders are Archers, Shamans, Sentries, Guards, and Rabids.

Just as a forewarning, you do not hand the items you collected into the NPC (Castlen) when you do this. You just hail him and get the reward.

But, the items do not disappear (i.e. Castlen doesn't 'take' them so they stay in your bags), so you can sell them for cuoins!!!! (coins ... /cough)

I found them spawning down by the river with the river rats next to the gate looking doorway. they spawn facing the river.
Disappointing

This quest was given to my level 15 Troll Warrior and it was a major dud. The reason why I call it a dud is because the Kobold Protectors were all conning a very low blue to me, and when I dinged 16 in the dungeon they started conning green. Plus you need to kill copious amounts of green placeholders to get the Protectors to spawn. It was a long camp, probably three hours. The good side is that a lot of mobs spawn with weapons (and booze!) so the selling of loot can be quite the moneymaker. Make sure you enter the dungeon with LOTS of backpack space - the Kobold Hides do not stack and if you want to keep them (I destroyed them after looting them) you'll need enough slots. I made my camp in the location neofit described on this page - there are a LOT of spawn points there, but since everything was green there was little worry of aggro.
Expansion maybe?

Greetings!
I can't get to the Warrens zone.
Some red message tells me not to.
Is it because I need the expansions?

You have two rooms with a river floating through them. The southern one is for the exploration stage update. Then go to the Northern room, the one right next to the Paineel zone, and kill all the gnolls standing at the walls around the river. A protector can spawn in any of the spots.

These Kobold Protectors are rare spawns by the looks of things. Been killing all Kobolds near the Prince (himself included) awaiting for a Protector to spawn but none as of yet. Will update IF I do get any to spawn near Prince.

Found Protectors spawning at loc 593, -670, -83; spawn rate was about every 7 minutes; the sequence I encountered was Protector-Protector-Rabid-Protector-Sentinel-Protector-Protector. Hope this helps...
