This is the quest for the First Paladin Holy Sword. It is technically not a quest, but a drop. Nonetheless, I'm including the instructions on how best to get it here. There is also a quest you can do to get the sword.

Location: Shin Lord Room (also called the bar room by some). It is in Upper Guk, but on second level of Guk.

Party: You should probably have a party of 6 level 28 to 30 level characters as a minimum. You could use a variety of classes but a cleric is a must. Also a Bard is a great aid due to the Mana and healing songs. One of the rooms in the area (the one directly next to the Shin Lord Room) has a small slow spawn. Take this room and pull all surrounding rooms to it one at a time. You should also clear the spawns in the surrounding rooms to prevent trains. I imagine you could go directly into the Shin Lords room and camp there but without constantly clearing all the surrounding rooms you're asking for trouble. If anything gets away from you ... ANYTHING... it will pull the whole freaking place and that will mean death and valuable lost time in the form of Corpse recovery.

Time: I have heard that the time to successfuly recover GB Ranges from 7-24 hours ... wow ... We were there start to finish for 7 hours. XP was awesome!! and loot was ok. We pulled each room as it spawned and this kept everyone in XP for the whole camp. I am not exagerating when I say downtime between fights was on average 8-15 seconds ... for 7 hours.

Tactics:

1: If you have a good group (friends or guild members work best) I reccommend making sure they all have a copy of your map and routes out and in. Also mark escape routes and number the rooms !! This will allow you to manage attack plans much better. It is much easier to say "pull from #2" than say "get the shaman room." There is no, I repeat, NO room for error down here.

2: If you're somewhat ok in the money department, I suggest everyone spend 26p and buy (2) invis potions. They can save your life and work very well. I know you're going to say "I can cast invis why do i need a potion". Well if you're fighting and are low or out of mana and it becomes apparent that you missed a spawn and you're about to be overrun ... well I think that a sure fire Invis just might come in handy.

3: Running ... I must admit that when we camped the Shin lord room I had never been there before, so running meant an opportunity to spend a fair amount of time trying to find a corpse...not much fun. So here is my point, if you and your whole group has gone over the maps and your convinced you won't get lost if your running then go ahead. For me I just decided to die where i stand, possibly keeping some of the mobs from running after my party as they tried to escape. Hopefully you won't need to run.

General:

1: When you arrive on site, insure that you announce that the room is camped. This will prevent others arriving on scene and getting in the way or accidentaly training you.

2: When you're done announce that you're done! This lets any other groups know that the room is free. It is also nice to let people know because if they get there quick enough the spawns will not have reset and this will be a big help to them.

3: If you're the paladin who is going to get GB I reccommend you take NO loot. I mean the sword is worth what.. a few thousand at least, dont get greedy. Your group will appreciate this.... Yes even if you dont get GB in one session and have to go back.

I just completed the "Sword of Nobility" quest for Ghoulbane on Phinigal and everything went as what I have read here. High Keep goblin drop was the longest camp for me at about 8 hours total beating up gobbies followed by the BB camp at about 3 hours total time. Honestly I think it is mostly luck but didn"t seem like it besides I gained 6 levels doing the quest so really was totally worth the frustration I might have felt and besides I completed the dang quest!.

What happened to the actual quest for the ghoulbane? This is just telling how and where to go and farm for it. When i did my sk's epic there was a quest you could do to make the ghoulbane. Only way to get it now is to camp the mob in Guk?

Could anyone post the proper current progression for the paladin epic(s)? I'm confused as to what is really needed and are these older steps obsolete?

I just wanted to add that SK's can do this quest, I did it back in the day to get my ghoulbane for my epic. Not sure if race played a part in this, but I'm a human sk that worships innoruuk. I don't recall having any issues.

Why bother?
# Feb 08 2006 at 2:37 PM Rating: Decent
Camping this dude is pointless. If u have a lvl 60+ toon u kill Joren nobleheart easy with 1 more person to help u or u jsut get soem uba buffs.
(see my post on: http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=5228 )

he is cake to kill. Soloed him on my lvl 62 Sk with wunshi, kei, conv. i duoed him unbuffed with a lvl 55 pally friend for him. I soloed on my Sk then logged out and went on my paladin and looted on him. his corpse has 30 mins on it and the only NPC that will aggro is 1 guard that wanders nearby and hes an easy kill. Took me a total of 30 minutes from preparing to looting on my pally.

So i say why bother with the quest or camping this guy?

I beg ALL paladins NOT to kill the shin lord. i killed him at level 30 and am now level 58... i am currently doing TONS of faction for the Crown of the Deceit quest all because i killed the lord for ghoulbane. by the time he spawns your faction will be totally messed up. instead of spending maybe one night of AE'ing in lguk i now have to spend a week of AE'ing in lguk... good luck to all who do decide to do it this way, as yes it is an easy way - but a costly reward.

Got a question, before this quest how was the GB obtained? You kill the Shin Lord, now...all the bleeding heart liberal's jump on a quest bandwagon because their afraid of dying in Uguk. Shame on the Holy Warriors suppossedly immune to fear, death before dishonor and that sort of thing. Kill or be killed. Clerics impose thier bliefs through preaching and healing, Paladins impose their beliefs by beating the daylights out of heratics. We live and die by the sword, you want a quest go find the Holy Grail.

Since you wanted to do it the easy way, now you can spend 20 hours fixing your faction when you need to do a quest involving the opposing factions.

The Shin Lord is a Paladin of Marr, those of us who try to roleplay found it a bit repugnant to kill a Light Of Marr just to remove the sword from his cold dead flippers. When VI/SOE created the quest it was a step forward for roleplaying.

I agree, what point is there of a Paladin of Marr killing a Light of Marr? Kind of an oxymoron isn't it?

Finally completed this quest, and would like to offer my experience on this. Started in bb and was killing the crazed gobbies there. Spent about 2 weeks on and off, and never saw the nobility drop. Then one morning, real early, about 6 am. I went there, and 3 dropped in a row. Next, went to estate, killing crazed ghouls. Again on and off for about 2 weeks. Decided to try logging in early one morn, again about 6 am. After the third ghoul in the towers, I got my heart. I went to high keep, again early in the morning, but couldnt get one to drop off the crazed gobbies there. So, being bored, I started killing other things. No one was around so i decided to look for some dark blues to kill. Thats when a gobling theif decided to get dumb...he attacked. Took him down and low and behold...there was my scroll. Finally, I went to najena, after falling in some traps, and killing about 15 skelis, I got the hilt. The key thing I want to stress here is, every time I found the parts...it was early in the morning. I have heard that off times is when things drop the most frequent...this seems to me to truthful. Take this for what it is worth..and good luck. The dismiss undead, with instrument of nife, when they hit...is awesome.
Post both versions of obtaining the Ghoulbane
# Mar 19 2003 at 5:46 AM Rating: Default
He's right you know. Doesn't seem proper to tell Paladins to kill another paladin. I could see if it was an evil corrupted paladin and you needed to get the Ghoulbane back to make the world safe for the powers of good. But it's not the case here.

So post both versions.

As a Shadow Knight I feel it my responsibility to kill his goody-two-shoes frog butt and get the Ghoulbane so it can be properly corrupted for my epic.

:D

Go there, or click the link on related quests Sword of Nobility up above. I believe at one time the only way to get this was to kill the Shin Lord then they made it into a quest as well for paladins. At least thats what my guild leader tells me. Evidently he got his before it could be quested. ;P

Yeah, I'm gonna dis Allakhazam for substituting a "kill-and-loot" solution! As someone wrote on another website outlining the QUEST for the Ghoulbane, "if you kill another Paladin because you covet his sword, you're not worth the metal you're wrapped in." C'mon folks, we're not Shadowknights after all!

I'd just ding'd 30 and headed to Unrest to try out my new Instrument of Nife spell, when I stumbled upon a ghoul, killed him and looted his heart. (Lucky me!) That's when I decided to go back and investigate the quest.

Well it sounded kinda tough and none of my regular buddies were online, but being a brave Paladin I decided to press on as best I could. I had to camp the crazed gobbies in Butcher for 3 hrs before the Blade of Nobility dropped. Killed skellies in Najena and got the Nobleman's Hilt in less than an hour. Amstaf's Scroll was the hardest party, simply because Highhold Keep was ultra-camped. So I sat in the basement healing and buffing a wizzy and taking overpulls off him till the scroll dropped and he let me loot it.

So I came very close to soloing the whole thing, and have to say it was major fun and quite challenging! I don't mind killing evil monsters for xp, loot and cash, but IMHO this is the only way to get the Paladin Ghoulbane and still measure up to the high standards of our class.

On a side note, it's a schweet wep! With DEX 124, I average over 2 procs of it and Instrument of Nife per fight when in Unrest. Couple that with a cast of Expulse Undead to pull, and it's now wonder Paladins are sought-after for grouping there!

Hey Folks,
Here is my 2cp on this sword and quest. I decided to quest it, because I thought the quest would break up my routine of "get somewhere and kill everything in sight to gain levels" routine. This it definitely did. The quest was my first major multi-zone quest, and I found it to be a lot of fun and adventure. As a note, I was level 26 when I started. I may have gotten lucky as well. All of the NPCs were up when I got to them, and all were easy to find. I did not talk to all of them first, though, and then get the items. Basically, there are four NPCs to talk to, and four items to get for the bag. The items are very close to the NPCs, if you map it all out, so I just got the item that was near the NPC when I talked to them. Here is my take on each item: The ghouls heart-I got lucky here as well. Got into Unrest, went up stairs while ITU, to the location mentioned in other threads. He was up, so I hit him. Ran downstairs and outside. Fought him for a while, was a tough fight, and got the heart on the first drop. Luckily, the zone was crowded, so I got no adds as I went downstairs. Blade of Nobility-another easy one. I hung out near the crazed gobs, while some higher levels killed them. I asked politely, and they let me loot (these gobs are still tough to me now at 29). Amstaf's scroll-drops on any non-pickclaw gob, and this was the hardest part. These are too tough to solo at the level I was, and the zone was crowded. Finally got into a group after a couple of sessions, and got the scroll after several hours of camping. The hilt of nobility-Got to Najena, it was empty (empty quite often on my server). I found a skel (plain and simple name, as noted previously) in a hallway off the room that is right before the main big room with the Najena sign. I killed him quite a few times and he finally dropped the hilt. One note, this skel is very tough for his con, and took me near death several times. I liked the exp so much in Najena, that I stayed there until 29, especially since I had my GB now. I kept soloing the "a skeleton" and his friends over and over, along with tentacle terrors. At 28, I was still gaining I full blue for every kill, along with around 4pp and an item worth 2pp. The GB doesn't proc as much as I like, but it helps. My dex was 96, and I was getting 1 proc per fight, with one time 2 procs in one fight. I have since brought my dex up to 106, and I just arrived in Unrest. I hope I can squeeze out the occasional 2 proc fight more often. Well, that is about it. A good 1hs for my level, as long as I stick to Undead. Anything else, I go to 2hs and my BABS. BTW, some of the best parts of the adventure were running through zones I had never been to before (as a dwarf I had never left Faydwer this much) and trying not to get aggroed or killed (especially in Nektulos and East Karana).
the quest for Ghoulbane
# Aug 15 2002 at 6:58 AM Rating: Default
found this at EQ Stratics forum:

"starts in W.Karana. Then to Butcherblock, then to highkeep, then to najena. you need 4 items, a crazed ghouls heart (unrest), a sword of nobility (Butcherblock), a noblemans hilt (highkeep?) and a scroll of Amstaff (LavaStorm?). Anyway you combine all those after you get a combine box from NPC in Najena (or Lavastorm?). Then it says you have made something new, and that you are holding a ghoulbane."

i wouldnt know if it holds true or not, tho. Hope it helps! :)

There are Two ways to get Ghoulbane.

1) Camp it (Which this site calls Ghoulbane quest).

2) "Sword of Nobility" quest, which Anung is describing.
(see sword of nobility quest description)

I chose option 2, and got the last piece just as I dinged 22. ( asked for and got lots of help) Its an awesome undead killer, especially if you are in low 20's when you get it. At 30 you can buy Instrument of Nife spell in Shawdow Haven, and get both the sword and spell procing.

and some added info:

Location of NPC's
Ryshon Hunsti is in West Karana! Dont listen to what others say. Dont ask for Rangers to help you either as I even had a lvl 41 try to track him and he couldnt track him. Saved me money too. I thought that Hunsti was by fishing camp... no he wasnt. If you go to the undead ruins next to spires like seconds from N.Karana zone... between river and ruins is Hunsti, in the shore.
Ogrebane is in ButcherBlock. On the pier swim close to shore and keep going right. You'll see your first NPC after swimming past the wall on your right. I thought my info was wrong... but i found ogrebane just seconds later after this NPC also on shore.
Llara is standing on top of the entrance to Unrest in Dagnors Cauldron. If not, she's near there somewhere.
The last NPC is Ruathey. Go to Lavastorm and stay to left when you first get to zone, and 10 seconds later you'll see her, she doesnt move like Hunsti or Ogrebane.

Location of quest items
- Ghouls Heart- I with a group of I could care less how many, hunted crazed ghouls. This item was the hardest to obtain for me. The only chance of pulling a crazed ghoul involved trains. So, during a train, I told my group to stand by "fountains" agains the wall where the trains dont run by. After looking at ghouls, specifically crazed ghouls, I targeted a Crazed Ghoul, and told the rest of my group (all paladin, I only one without Ghoulbane, and also only one who didn't buy it). We'll I didn't see anyone out of us proc with the Ghoulbane but they said I could loot, and there it was, the Ghouls Heart.
- Sword Of Nobility- Its somewhere near the guards to kaladim... look for a place with 5 stones. There will be some crazed goblins, and regular goblins. They spawn like every 5 minutes so dont bother healing so quickly. If you dont get it at first try, dont be sad when you only get a fine steel weapon or 8pp as loot, I wasnt, hehe, just dont sell the fine steel to a merchant! Sells lot more to others.
-Amstaff Scroll- This was the easiest. I went to Highhold Keep. Went downstairs, and joined a group. The first crazed goblin had the scroll! Only 1 minute and I got it!
-Noblemans hilt- I have yet to get this, it is my last item. I'm supposed to kill skeletons in najena. I keep killing all I see, (all skellies are green to me at lvl 22), but none have dropped it. But I only been there 5 minutes so, will keep trying. After I get it, I put it in my bag with the other 3 items and click combine, and I should be holding a ghoulbane...... we'll see very soon! Now, for some DEX items, as mine is only 79.

The "A Skeleton" is the mob that drops the hilt in Najena. There are several places that they spawn around the dungeon. If someone tells you they spawn where the Large and Greater Skeletons spawn are they are incorrect.

Here is a list of the ones that I have found so far in my hunting....

1) Hanging dwarf room next to the secret door room that least to the Ogre Officers and Captain.

2) Under the stairs just past the main gate that is guarded by a magician and elementals.

3) In the goblin area to the right of Najena's pool

4) In the corner of the large chamber to the left of Najena's pool

Those are the only "A Skeleton" spawns I've found up to this point. There may be more deeper in but the spawn rate kept me constantly killing those with time inbetween for a little meditation. Killing those four spawns with no competition from others yielded a hilt for me in about two hours or so.
Shin Lord
# Jul 21 2002 at 5:16 PM Rating: Default
The Shin Lord is an easy kill for a level 43 Sk, but I imagine he could be killed solo at a lower level. I was told that he was an SK but he isn't. He's actually a paladin, so he can use LH(basically a complete heal on himself) once during the fight. Camped him for about an hour and a half. Spawned once, didn't drop the sword, only the bracer. Spawn time seems to be about 13-17 or so minutes on the room, but I'm just guessing on that.
