This is a non-progression task. It is a group mission (3-6 players) that begins with Kanetheus Forestwalker (click for map image) in the Norrath's Keepers camp of the Lavastorm Mountains.

Pre-requisites for requesting:
- Minimum level 59
- Minimum "apprehensive" faction with Norrath's Keepers

Hail him to get a quest selection window pop-up.

You have been assigned the task 'Tracking the Kirin'.

There is but one kirin who knows the full history of Stillmoon Temple. Finding the elusive creature has proved difficult however. We would like you to try your hand at finding him and return any knowledge of the Stillmoon Temple that you may be able to obtain. To accomplish this you will have to cause a commotion of some sort that may bring him out of hiding. Once you've killed enough of the guards, the kirin is likely to be wandering about unseen. Look for a sign that he's lurking around and track him back to his lair. Then bring back the tome we seek.

Note: This group mission scales to your group's level. The highest is 68+, outlined here.

Touch the portal to Stillmoon Temple 0/1 (The Broodlands)

The entrance will be marked on your compass (entered in the north-central part of the Broodlands, near the non-instanced entrance to Stillmoon Temple).

Kill 10 Iron warders 0/10 (Stillmoon Temple)

Kill 1 Elusive Kirin 0/1 (Stillmoon Temple)

Loot 1 Book of Knowledge from the Elusive Kirin 0/1 (Stillmoon Temple)

Kill 10x "an iron warder", and then seek out "Elusive Kirin". To do this, you'll have to run around and get emote updates before it spawns.

First, head east down the long hallway full of iron warders until you come to the doorway to the sand area in the northeastern part of the zone. When you open this door, you get the first emote (in plain text):

Unusual footprints can be seen on the ground before you. Perhaps if you keep searching, you will find more.

Copy the following map points into one of your "stillmoona.txt" map files. The update locations don't appear to vary, and the points below should be pretty accurate.

Upon the 27th update, the Elusive Kirin spawns and you see:

So you have found me. Too bad for you that I did not want to be found!

The Elusive Kirin hits for a max ~900; has ~80,000 hitpoints; AE rampages; and casts a knockback. It does not see invisibility. Kill it, and loot the Book of Knowledge from its corpse.

Deliver 1 Book of Knowledge to Kanetheus Forestwalker 0/1 (Lavastorm Mountains)

Very nice work. We hope the reward was worth the effort. Thank you for helping us.

This quest is horrible, don't do it! I spent hour and half after clearing the zone looking for this "elusive kirin". It's not elusive it just doesnt' exist and I sure as hell won't bother doing this one again. Thanks!

the mission is a pain.

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=17768

after killing the zone you must walk (no lev) around looking for speifice spots to get messages.
Their is a pet trick that link you can try to find the spots.

its very weird mission.

Good luck.

I have never done a mission quite like this one before. Smiley: waycool
It was a challenge to complete.
Guess others did not like the uniqueness of this mission. Smiley: confused
As for us, we thought it was a blast!!! Smiley: clapSmiley: clapSmiley: clap

Heres how we did it....
Group was 1-81 Shaman w/tank merc, 1-75 Druid w/ tank merc and 1-71 Warrior w/cleric merc.

It was easy to clear the zone. Even when 5-8 mobs attacked at once we killed them all. Dru drained of mana and clr merc drained of mana, but doable.

If you follow the plan below, this can be done in under 2 hours.

I strongly suggest you have at least one pet class with you. This is a must to complete this mission!! If you dont bring a pet class with you, you will spend hours looking for Kirin or giving up all together.

If you use the /guard comand on pet you can find the footprints of Kirin. A message will appear indicating you have found a footprint.

How to use your pet....
Once you have cleared the zone of all mobs put the pet in /guard and observe the direction it faces. Now walk in that direction while looking for the message.
-Once you get the message stop and set pet to /follow, allowing pet to come to you. Again set pet to /guard, walk in the direction it faces, look for the message. Repeat this each time you receive the message.
-This will take you around the zone till you reach the upstairs room with the dragon statue. Keep repeating /guard/, /follow, /guard all around the room till you trigger Kirin to spawn.
-Kirin spawns in this upstairs room with the dragon statue. Kirin will attack soon as he spawns. Kill Kirin, loot and return to Lavastorm for the turn-in.

Review...
1] Kill all mobs in zone
2] Set pet to /guard
3] Walk in direction pet faces till you receive a "footprint" message
4] Stop & set pet to /follow allowing pet to come to you
5] Set pet to /guard
6] Walk in direction pet faces till you receive message again
7] Repeating this alot eventually takes you to a room upstairs with dragon statue
8] Repeat steps 1-6 till you trigger Kirin to spawn
9] Kill Kirin
10] Loot
11]Return to Lavastorm for turn-in and complete the mission.
12] Celebrate a job well done!!! Smiley: yippee Smiley: boozing

Next time we do this I will log the mission for details and post. Smiley: wink2

Don't even bother. Worthelss task, exept for maybe the experience of clearing every mob in the zone, and then spending an hour our two wandering around looking for basically nothing.
'Elusive' is about equivilant to "Doesn't Exist".

I'd rate this quest as 0, somewhat akin to the many other tasks that the Sony folk dreamed up on some wild acid trip.

not worth it

did this one,and omg.. compared to the amount of crystals you get for it,i say its not worth it.

the running around looking for footprints was the most frustrating part. it sounded so easy when picking the mission ; kill 10 bla bla, find the kirin. yeah,right...

*why didnt we pick the infected puma mission*

How to do this Mission
# Jan 01 2006 at 8:53 PM Rating: Decent
First and Foremost, you NEED to have atleast 1 pet class that can "guard" their pet to have this mission complete as easy as possible

Secondly, we had to kill more guards then the previous posts, but this really doesnt matter due to the fact to Complete This Mission you MUST kill all the mobs to correctly "touch" all the footprints.

OK, after clearing the full zone of any and all mobs, you will get a message refering to the footprints. These "footprints" are invisible (atleast they were for me, then again now that i think of it, i didnt have See Invis on).

k, this works best if you are the pet class, or the pet class person is next to you. Mobs are now dead, guard the pet and he will point in the direction of the first footprint, all you have to do to "activate" them is to walk over them and you will get a message that states you found the footprint and more are leading off. Ive found that most of the footprints do follow a trail or path and circle around most of the zone. once you "activate" the first one, look at the guarded pet and it should be pointing to the next one. There were a total of about 25 to 30 of these messages/footprints that we touched.

You will know you are touching the final footprints when you are in the far room with a dragon wrapping around a pole type statue and footprints you touch in here will circle around the circular room until you have walked over the last one and the Kirin will give a message such as "So, you have found me." (someone in the group said they clicked the statue after the last footprint, but i dont believe that is what triggered the Kirin, but then again, you might want to try it) then almost instantly he will pop and begin attacking. He was a fairly easy kill, he did do a stun type attack that is similar to the druid stuns that lift the mob in the air.

One last thing, the room that he spawns in is the one after the first room with the spiral staircase. After leaving the Ent/Zoneline, which i call the courtyard, the first room is the one with the staircase then you just go forward from that door to the circular room.
HAVE FUN! and i hope that this helps someone out there.

Once you've found where all the footprints are, you no longer need a pet class (provided you marked them on your map). You do not need to kill any of the mobs to trigger the footprints or to trigger the elusive kirin. But you do need to kill 10 of the sentry guys as part of the task.

If your group average is less than 68 (i think), none of the mobs in the zone see through SoS (hint hint). If you're average is above 68 (again, i'm not positive about the cut off), there are some mobs that do see through SoS, so be careful.
Do NOT attempt this quest

I have done this quest before. Spawning the Elusive Kirin is a pain in the...

If, however, you did start this quest, here are some rough guidelines:

First, mobs fortunately don't respawn in this zone. If they did, it would be flat out impossible. You have to kill *EVERY* mob in the zone before you can spawn the kirin. You could theoretically do it with an FD'er, but it's just easier, faster, and more exp to kill everything.

Second, once you complete the first step where you have to kill 4 (I believe it's 4) of the statues, you will start receiving the footprint marks as you run around. This is where the, errm, annoying part starts. You must trigger *every* footprint spawn point, in a very particular order. I personally triggered close to 20, and my group mates were triggering many of their own. There's a trick to triggering these footprints though (if there weren't, you could literally run around for close to 2 hours randomly trying to find all of the triggers.)

For those of you who ever spawned the kromriff death guard from Velious, you may remember the pet point trick. What you do here is this: After clearing the zone, you have everybody who can summon a pet, then use /pet guard here. The pet will point to the nearest creature or trigger. If there are still mobs around, they will most likely point to the nearest mob. Follow where the pet is pointing, and you will find a footprint mark. Once you do that, run around the room where you found that footprint a bit (since you'll find multiple footprints in one room sometimes) then do it again... park the pet, then follow where it points.

Eventually, the pet will point to the room with the dragon statue that you can get to by going up the stairs then forward for a little bit. Once the pet does this, gather the group together and get ready, this is where the Elusive Kirin spawns. Send your tank in to run around and trigger 3 or 4 footprints in that room, then aggro the Kirin when it pops. Have levitation cast on everybody, since the Kirin casts a gravity flux spell that knocks everybody back, and can make it tough for your tank to keep taunt. Also, there is a zone-out in that room, and I think he bounced one of our group members onto it and out of the zone during the fight, so be warned. Besides that, the mob is no more difficult than any other mob you've fought so far in the mission. Loot the head, head back to camp, and get your crystals.

I would really only recommend doing this if you only want a break from doing whatever other mission you've been doing, such as the creator or whatnot. You can easily do the creator twice in the time it takes to do this mission once, and this mission barely offers any more crystals than the creator. Even if you are tiring of doing another mission, I would recommend trying out one besides this one.

This method does work - just used it. No one knew what to do here, so we cleared all mobs, then ran around commenting on the emotes. I came here, read this, then followed my skelly pet around till I started circling the dragon room, then waited for the group to come up. Easy as pie.

My group and I finished this task the other day, but it took a very long time. First I recomend clearing the zone of all mobs. Then you have to walk around until you get a message about footprints. Keep moving slowly so that you keep getting messages then follow those messages and the Kirin will pop. The Kirin is not trackable, since he only spawns when you follow his footprints. He is very easy to take down, but he is only partailly slowable and summons. You might also want to have the looter bind in the camp, since you have to return his head to the taskmaster.
