It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

I just did mq with someone. The person who was to get the boots gave too much gp by accident. Never got boots. He went back to the bank, got more gp 3250 and gave it to him shortly after we'd already given ring and rapier, and it worked. He got boots. I think if someone else had come along and did quest, it would have blown it, but i kept hailing Hasten so no one would. Good idea to bind at rathe before going to bank.

Having just received my boots, here are answers to some questions:

(1) YES, this can still be multi-quested as of October 27, 2002. The person who hands in the last item will receive the boots. My friend (thanks Welfe) handed in the ring, then I handed in the cash and weapon.

(2) The AC spawn is not so hard if you bring along some friends. Druids are probably the best class to do this with. In my case, I was camping the AC solo in OOT at the same time my friends were killing everything that moved in SRo. The AC spawned in SRo after about 3 hours.

In OOT, the camp is very simple, just sit there and wait every 7 minutes for a PH or the AC to spawn. I used the downtime to practice Fishing. Some of the cyclopses were blue to me at 55, and gave a fair amount of exp.

In SRo, just kill everything that moves in the desert area. Bring two 40+ friends and make it a killfest. Loot the spiders, snakes, and undead for tradeskill supplies (tailoring, baking, pottery, and poison making).

After a while, you will notice certain patterns, most of which have already been discussed here. I can say from personal observation that the theory about killing the "named" mobs seems to be pretty accurate; There are mobs that look just like any other mob except that their name is slightly different. For example, there is a mob called "a madman", who looks like just like any "a desert madman" wandering about. Killing a named mob seems to trigger another named mob to spawn. I would venture to guess that killing these named mobs will eventually trigger an AC spawn.

The AC has always spawned (for me) in the area between the DE vendors and the Dervs to the East.

(3) Killing shadowed men is a piece of cake. The rapier is very common. We hunted in WC and got it in under 5 minutes. The warrior class shadow-men usually dual-wield, and you can see what weapons the mob wields before having to kill them.

(4) I paid Hasten in GP. Many people say you can use PP (which I believe to be true, but I didn't want to risk it). Hasten runs very quickly, so hail him early and often. It doesn't help that you have to carry such heavy coin while trying to catch a fast mob, so bring some friends with SoW to help you.

(5) JBoots rock! The effect does not last very long, but who cares.

Another fine camp is the one located on the west wall of South Karana, between the gnolls and the aviak nests. There are often people camping Quillimane in this area, and could provide some assistance helping you if you are a bit short on the level.

I got mine in west commons. there is a nice sized camp of shadowed men in the SW corner of the zone.

Was a very short time before it dropped. Plus, if you don't have a port class helping you, there are both types or port locations in zone, making travel easier.

odds are that he did accept them and the ring had not been turned in.

upon mq, the player with the ring gives it (if you are mq for alt on your acct you give ring then log off and log on alt, give person hailing hasten for you *that you trust* your rapier and gives to your alt), then give rapier and coin to hasten. he says something to the effect of "I dont want this crap" with each turn in till done and you will haev boots.

This is the way it happened for me anyhow. I do hope they did not remove the mq ability

October 5, around 4pm (est)successful to MQ the quest.

we were very worry as some people said that MQ quest might changed.

what we did: my friend handed in 3250 gold (it was try to make sure will the npc accept the quest things), then I handed in boot, then my friend handed in the last rapier and he got the boots.

I hope this info will help everyone. maybe many people complained, so VI fix it.

Did VI change the quest? (or at least the MQable part of it?)

I was helping someone with an MQ and Hasten ate the ring.

I got some language from Hasten saying something like: "No Trade for you until I have the ring, rapier and gold in my hand"

I have helped MQ the ring before and never had this happen. Also my faction is warmly.

A little piece of advice: Camp the AC early in the morning. I camped the AC for 3 early mornings, before work, and had the whole zone to myself. My camps were only about a half hour - 45 minutes each time.

Just something to keep in mind for those having a difficult time with over crowding/KS'ing. Go to bed a little early and get up an hour or so earlier than usual. :)

alot of info and misinfo. can only say that u should have person with ring hand it in first then have person getting boots hand in rapier and money which can be 325 pp. no need for gold. reason for this is if ring is given with either one of other two components ring bearer might get boots cuz other component is already there from blown quest. granted if rapier and money there and ring is given? well then wait till fresh spawn of hasten which is advisable anyway. also people will help and let them know ur doing it so they dont kill him. this really not that hard just needs to be planned. J BOOTS rock so good luck

I decided one day that my monk could do with some boots, not really that much of a suprise... a level 31 at the time Monk could quite easy do this quest really.... although one thing stood in the way... KS'ers and people who aren't willing to respect camps. Well... I decided that a level 31 Melee type wouldn't stand a chance... after all... you have to do 1/2 damage to ensure the kill is yours... and would take a while for the Monk to do this and may be very touch and go as to death... so long story short. I decided to MQ it with my Shaman who was Lvl 50.

These are my findings:

South Ro & the 'An Anchient Cyclops'.
*****************************************
Camped on day from 6pm-1am SRo with nothing spawning but more spiders, SG's and Sandgiant Hasam (and Armanan Dumfrey or some stupid named madman, but thats a diff story).
Then came back the next day at 6pm (this is GMT time btw) and hunted again... but at about 10pm I decided to try something I heard rumour of... to kill a specific mob at a specific time of the day (EQ time) and then get ready for the AC to spawn...

Mob: various undead in a tower just south east of the western most Derv camp in the desert area.
Time to kill: About 7pm EQ time (/time)
AC Spawn: About 9pm EQ time...

Now this seemed to work for me and with my heart pounding watching around for that lvl 60 Wiz I zapped away as fast as my little Poison DOT could take me.... and WOOO!! It dropped and there when I looted a 'Ring of the Anchients' (looks like a bracer IMHO) and a few other bits... didn't care much for them.... And off I went to the Shadowmen,

Shadowmen Camping
*********************************
Three camps I can think of off the top of my head. West Commons, Lavastorm and Innothule Swamp (closest but least known about). So I went there.
Killed a round of Shadowmen. Now this wasn't hard as such, but it's much hard that I percieved. I /pet attack'd the first one I saw then had to control the flow of them all as they were doing serious damage to my pet over time and he risked dying on a few occasions... Anyway... about the 2nd run through them I got a 'Shadowed Rapier'... so Off I run to Rathe Mountains singing a happy song.

Hasten in Rathe Mountains
*****************************************
Run into the zone and cheer with delight... then find out Hasten isn't up... so I go .. 'Oh'. The I go about finding why. Well, my luck was in as the Brother Z-something isn't up so I'm very cheerie about that... and I spot the 'a Drake' flapping around (VERY fast!) and eventually overtake him and cast a quick spell to agro him and then root and zapp to death... about 800hp I guess he had.... not hard to kill once caught... then 10 minutes later about, Hasten flys past me like a bat out of hell and my heart misses a beat and I jump up smacking the 'H' key with him targetted... and he stops quite soon (to my smiley face).. i hailed him once every 10 secs to make sure he didn't do a runna... Then I MQ'd to my Monk...

Ring Bearer & Rapier
Hail Hasten
Say 'What Journeyman Boots?'
then follow the conversation to find out what trade he wants to make...
Then GIVE him the Ring and Rapier.

Next is the money bearer (and reciever of boots!)
Hail him
Say 'What Journeyman Boots?'
then follow conversation as before..
Then GIVE him the 3250 GOLD pieces...

Whether the above stages can be shortened with less words or by using PP not gold... was not for me to decide.... I WANTED them boots and was not messing up! Lol!

Hope this guide is of a small us at least :)
Safe travels everyone!!

FYI the SRo AC is uncampable. Random spawns cannot be camped and the SRo AC is a random spawn.

Well you are thinking in terms of "Im camoing this you cant fight it."

A camp can also consist of staying int he zone for long periods of time in hopes of getting something to spawn. In this situation 'camping' south ro and destroying everything you can to gett he AC to spawn. The only difference is you can not hold to saying "You can not kill this, I have been here camping it."

Its all about how ya look at it ^_~
Only one question

You have to give Hasten the items once each time, or u can give him the three at the same time?

3250 gp?!
# Aug 29 2002 at 3:22 PM Rating: Decent
just give him 325 plat, as with all quests that require currency. eq just stores all currency needs in copper units, so he can't tell the difference between plat or gold. i've MQed this quest 3 times using 325 plat each times. if you really wanted you could give him 324 plat, 9 gold, 9 silver, and 10 copper =)

MQ the jboots
# Aug 25 2002 at 7:56 AM Rating: Default
The items can be handed to Hasten in any order however the person that turns in the last piece of the three items needed will get the jboots. Always works best with a fresh spawn of Hasten because if he has been running around a while and someone botched up a turn in then the next people trying to MQ could have the wrong person getting the jboots.

The AC can be the most frustrating part of this but most of the time he can be spawned in about 2 hours by killing every thing wandering or static in the desert. Hasten has place holders in Rathe Mountians as well. All spawn on or near the backside of hill giant hill. If Hasten is not up look for a drake, Maldyn the unkept druid or Brother Zephyl. If Brother Z is up then unless you have a very strong fighting force you might as well give it up for the day. Any of the others can be killed and Hasten has a chance to spawn in a few minutes.

that happened to me.. my buddy has 2 jboots LOL

what I recommend is having the person with the ac ring hand that in only; have the person who is to receive the jboots hand in the rapier and money. The way we did it was he'd hand in the ring and rapier and I'd hand in the money. Apparently someone previously handed Hasten the money.

Hasten hits pretty hard for his level. My monk buddy and I had to kill him to get BroZ to spawn. The little gnome punches harder some Iksar monks I know )

2. Char hands Hasten both the ring and rapier the press OK button.
3. Other char hails Hasten.
4. Other char give 3250 gps to Hasten then press OK button.

Other char get experience and Jboots...

Running through SRo
# Aug 22 2002 at 12:45 PM Rating: Default
My boyfriend just happened to be running through SRo to meet up with guildies who were taking out Faydedar for a druid epic, when he checked track and just happened to see AC on track. He immediately tracked it and started killing it then told me to get there quickly. Unfortunately I could only port to NRo, so while trying to get to SRo he had killed it and decided to just loot it and we could multi quest it later today when he got home from work.

We seem to have had very good luck in the past week on Sullen Zek. We dropped Phinny once for the heck of it and now have the Blue Crystal Staff to multi quest for me when I am ready to finish my epic since the corpse timer is only 6 mins and I was not actually in KK for the kill.

Good luck everybody.
We Got 6 in 3 days in SRo in around 20 hours total
# Aug 19 2002 at 3:15 AM Rating: Excellent
Ok....we got 6 rings in SRo, and we even got KSed once so that makes a total of 7 AC spawns, and we only camped about 20 hours total over 3 days. Here is how:

Day 1 - camped over 12 hours with 6 peeps from the guild. We followed all the advice listed in these posts, but we only got 1 spawn. 2 druids and a ranger constantly checking track because we had competition, so we are sure we didnt miss one. It just never spawned after that first time. After a while we got borred and stopped killing every undead we saw, and just took down the named mobs when they popped (this was after 8 hours)...when we stopped killing the undead the SGs stopped spawning...so we are pretty sure contrary to popular belief that the undead, and only the undead are the PHs for the SGs.

Day 2 - We were very frustrated from the day before so our group this day consisted of myself and 2 other stubborn die hards. After trying the same strategy as the day before for an hour and only getting SG spawns we decided to try a little different strategy and only kill the undead in the tower instead of all the undead that roam. We concentrated on the spider spawns and the named mobs (Terrorantula, Scrounge, Husam, Sand Mummy, a mummy (not shrivled or crypt), a madman (not a desert madman), and anything else that looked like it didnt belong). When we stopped killing the undead we again stopped seeing the SG spawns, but the named spawns were still comming at about the same rate. After 2 hours the AC spawned, and we killed it. Then 2 hours later another spawned. I had won the roll the day before, and hadnt finished the quest yet, so with 3 peeps we were at our limit for the day.

Day 3 - I was just messing around this day solo in the morning. I was borred so I decided to head to SRo and give it another shot. I was planning a drunken n00b race for the guild and I thought it would be cool to have JBoots as the prize. I got there and since I was alone I limited myself again to just the spiders and the named mobs. After an hour without seeing a single SG I got an AC to pop. Took him down looted the ring. At that time a friend of mine who wanted some JBoots logged on...and I was alone in the zone besides a few lvl 10-15 that were killing orcs, so we decided to stay. We did the same thing...killed the spiders and the named mobs and 2 hours later an AC popped. We looted the ring and left because again we were at our limit to hold them. By this time my guild had heard of 5 ACs in the last 2 days, so everybody was all excited about it, so I answered questions and everything, and some more peeps went out later that day. I was asked along for my tracking. SRo was quite crowded this time, so we got ourselves into position and started doing our thing and again we got an AC to spawn in about 1 and a half hours. There were several other peeps looking for the AC so to be courtious we took our one ring that night and left.

So there we go...the story of 6 rings in 3 days...now to the point....what should you take from all this...here are a few things:

1. We dont believe there is a trigger. There are definitly PHs, but there seems to be just a random chance that the AC will spawn when one of the PHs is killed.

2. The tower undead definitly had something to do with the spawn of spiders and named mobs. Everytime we took down the tower spawn a bunch of spiders or a named mob spawned. We believe the claims that killing the tower at certain times of the day makes the AC spawn faster to be bunk and unfounded.

3. If you are looking to kill time by fighting SGs then by all means kill undead to get them to spawn, but it is not in any way necessary for the AC to spawn, because we got half of our rings without ever seeing an SG.

4. The AC and all other named mobs in this zone (terrorantula, scrounge, husam, sand mummy, a mummy, a madman, and anything else that looks out of place) seem to be tied to the spider spawns. The more spiders we killed the more named mobs spawned, and the faster the AC spawned.

I would have to agree with everything you said also. On the Rathe Server, i am known for being a pro when it comes to camping the AC. People everywhere all the time ask me to get them Jboots. In one week i even saw him 7 times (and just like with you, i got all the Rings but one. One of the 7 ACs i had was KSed from me by a little guy named Cast), but anyway... I would have to say that the AC is just a very random spawn, even though he does have Placeholders like those named mobs and the mobs that seem like they dont belong. Anyway, good luck all.

RE: We Got 6 in 3 days in SRo in around 20 hours total
# Aug 22 2002 at 7:17 AM Rating: Decent
I am in total agreement with all of this. I sat solo for 3 days on Karana server. I killed everything for hours and hours with no spawn. I got my ring today when there was only a lvl3 and a level8 in the zone and I had killed only one thing in the zone in one hour prior to the spawn and i mean right before the spawn. A zombie.

I was just sittin on a hill when I saw a zombie from quite a distance making a B-line for me. i got up and moved so i would not have to kill it this zombie came straight at me so i took off runnin and sure enough it came right for me so i killed it. I turn around and there is the AC.

What was so odd about the zombie is that when i saw it and moved i was well out of aggro range yet it still aggroed on me. don't be reading anything into this as i have determined that it makes no difference what you kill. i don't even think it makes a difference if you kill anything at all.

i turned in my ring and rapier and cash to Haste and got my boots. I had little trouble finding him i just ran a perimiter and encountered him at 985 -1545 I bound myself there and decided that I would just camp there and wait till he came back. I had to run to the bank to get the 3250gp. When i got back I encountered him again within 5 minutes at same Locale. total time to bank etc could not have been more than 20 minutes.

What a relief that was I was determined to set up a camp and wait however long it took. After camping the AC for as long as i did sittin waitin for haste was not going to be a problem. So if your looking For the little guy try here.

A further observation on SG's if you want to make them pop kill all the mummies in the zone. a couple of them are place holders for the SG's. No doubt about that. I think that as there are 2 groups of mummies one from each group is an SG place holder. That would be one of the crypt Mummies is a PH as is one of the shriveled. i have never seen more than 2 SG at a time and the only time i saw 2 were when both sets of mummies had been killed.

For the record there were 4 pops of AC in the 3 days. and i spent at least 14 hours campin each day.

Good Luck and if you can kill an SG the AC is a breeze The SG's resist more (the AC I killed resisted nothing) and the AC has quite a few less HP

This is all really great info, thanks to everyone who took the time to post thoughtful, well-informed information. I personally had trouble with the AC resisting Evocation-based DoT (Immolate) and DD (Combust) spells; especially the DD, which I probably cast 20 times and only got 2 hits, for 10-20 pts each time rather than the full 182 I usually get w/ other mobs. I ended up killing him almost entirely with Conjuration-based DoT (Drones of Doom).

got 3 yesterday
# Aug 08 2002 at 11:08 AM Rating: Default
last night me and 3 buddies of mine hunted and killed three of the AC's. the first one only took close to 1hour the second took about 1.5-2hours and the 3rd was taking a real long time. i have been told that killing the undead in the temple will reset the spawn but on the third kill it had been sooooo long that we decided to give up when some one came along and killed the undead in the temple. As soon as we were about to camp an AC poped up by the DE camp we killed it and went home with 3rings.

im not sure how the reset thing works, but the undead that was in the temple was named "A" dry bone skeleton and not just "dry bone skeleton" which i have been told is one of the many PHs for this quest. among other PHs are the roaming "dervish cutthroat" a "named jackel" (the name i dont know because i never saw one nor did the rest of the party, someone told me that the name is something like scrounge) and id say that killing the named SG hafagta (something like that) is about a 1 in 2 chance. The last PH i would imagin would be the 5 spider spawn. this is just my guess because if you kill the 5 bixie spawn in EC the a griff will spawn so why not an AC with 5 spider, im yet to hear a better idea about the spiders???

Then we killed in 2 shifts over 85 Hours, but no AC spawns - GM´s told me that AC is absoulte random ? Any comments ?

I think it's all random. I've been able to get the AC to spawn three times within an hour, and several more times we've had to wait 3-5 hours. We've tried all the methods and the one that *seems* to work best is killing all the undead. The last two times I didn't mess with the tower spawn and the AC popped. I believe the tower spawn is more related to Obrytl than it is to the AC.

I just bagged the big fellow. Took around 1 hour or so. All I did was kill spiders and I killed the undead spawn in the deserted tower 1 time. Other than that I didnt kill any other mobs. There was only two of us after him so that made it easier. Well really just me..the other was a 49 paladin. JK =P
