It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

You receive: Journeyman's Boots

can a lvl16 nec do this quest?
# Jan 30 2004 at 4:04 AM Rating: Default
Just wonder if a lvl16 nec turn in stuff to hasten, can he get the boots. it's said minimum lvl is 35, so i guess a lvl16 nec can not get the boots even he has all quest items. need confirmation.

this quest can be done by any level, you just may need a higher level to kill the mobs
Easy if you know how

I'm posting this so that all our classes that do not have access to SOWS all the time can have some type of speed to get away from mobs that want a piece of thier **** :).

1. Kill any type of skeleton that spawns inside the undead tower at exactly 10pm GAME TIME.

2. Kill Sand mobs that spawn on the edge of the grass area at exactly 11pm GAME TIME, sand mobs ie. tarantulas, scarabs and such that normall are only found in the desert area.

3. By 12am the AC should spawn for you.

at least thats what I was told and I did it exactly and AC popped first time, key thing is make sure the mob inside the undead tower is a form of skeleton, I have tried a ghoul and a zombie and no luck.
I didn't get a chance to try it anymore than 3 times with 2 being the previous mobs I mentioned because its News Years eve and time to party, but believe me , all day new years day I will be going for more :D

Ok, here is the best way to get the Ancient Cyclops to spawn in Southern Ro. This method I have had him spawn 2 times with in 1 hour. First you must track and kill all undead creatures (find some one to help if you can not track). Loot all these creatures. They include Ghouls, Mummies, Dry Bones and Skelletons. Killing the Necromancer by the temple helps too. When you do this a Sand Giant usually appears. Kill him too. After he is dead wait a few minutes untill a few more undead creatures spawn. Kill them. Ancient Cyclops will soon spawn. Kill him and Viola!! There's your ring!!

Sorry Edimusrex I am about to contradict you. After alot of investigation I finally found a post from someone on Rallos Zek server who MQ's this quest all the time. I cannot find it again or I would quote them, but if you look hard enough you can find it. He speaks of sitting on top of the AC hill in South RO (does not give a location but I have since found it to be just south of the DE merchants there). He says you can see the whole of desert there... he is correct. I do disagree with his post though to the extent that the AC only spawn on even hours between 10 pm and 7 am game time. First of all he is not gonna spawn at 7 if he spawns on even hours second of all he spawned for me at 8pm.

He is correct there is no placeholder. The AC spawned totally randomly for me. I killed nothing (this was his post that stated that you can sit on the hill and wait and he will appear makes no difference what you kill). Although he is entirely random.

I went to get my shadowed rapier and found that I camped the rapier for about 2 hours with no drop and then bam! 3 of them dropped in the same camp spawn. again must be totally random again.

Hardest part was Hasten. I found all the posts and decided that the best place to find him was running past you through the two southern valleys in Rathe. (look for the posts there are plenty of places to find him along his path). After many hours I found that Brother Zephyl was up and if he is up you will not get Hasten.

I put out a call to my guild and they came en masse (Kudo's and Thanks to Heavens Fire of Ayonae Ro) to kill Brother Z. After he took out an entire group (partly because of an error on our part, although he hits for 300+ and moves at sow speed with double attack), He conned white to our 61st level rogue, We made a second attempt and took him out. It was 20 minutes later that Hasten showed and I got my J boots.

Hope this helps all of you out there.

Thanks to the MQ person on Rallos Zek I would have had a much harder time had you not posted.

Jboots, not a whole lot to talk about
# Dec 10 2003 at 10:21 PM Rating: Default
Hello all,
well I just want to say that Jboots are not worth your wild. They are not as fast as you would like to imagine. In fact I don't even think they are as fast as SOW. I was very dissapointed with the results. The only real advantage I can think of is the instant cast. These boots are good for a noob character, but after awhile they aren't anything special.

#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 11 2003 at 3:03 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This quest sucks and is probably broken in OOT. I have just finished camping the spawn spot in OOT for over ten hours over three days. I killed the PH repeatedly ( cyclops, aqua gob, pirate, Boog ) and the AC never spawned. Sony can take their J-Boots and their player-******** random generator and shove them up their output port.

The quest is not broken, but it is very random over a long period of time. I've spent all weekend camping it, and I've seen the AC spawn 3 times in one evening. Similarly I camped Lord Bergurgle off and on for two weeks before I caught him and then he popped again half an hour later. That's what random means.

Patience, grasshopper.

There is allways some theory about this quest being broken, but its all about luck, at the AC is a Random spawn, First time I tryied to get my boots, I camped in 3 night in a Row, first night 7 hours 2nd 17 hours, 3rd 5 hours, then I went to Ro and found him after 1 hour, after my first drop I have them dropped after 9 and 2 kills in OOT, so its all about luck. I know its hard but you just have to keep the spirit up or contack a GM and ask if it broken.

Jboots, are great, unless you have another instant click item, The main use for Jbbots (unless lower lvl) are the instant click thing, that is Great vs debuffing mobs, so you dont loose all your other buffs, so imo Jboots are Great
Hasten Stop Location
# Dec 05 2003 at 5:58 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all,
I just completed this quest, and wanted to add that the location that Hasten stopped running is within the valley just East of the Hill Giant valley, at location -385, -1680. He runs on a SE path to the point from HG valley. I was running with him for awhile mapping the path, and this is where he finally stopped when I hailed him, to make the trade. FYI and good luck!

Doesn't that blow! I was a 47th level Chanter and tried to solo one in OOT. He went through 4 pets and ALL my mana (I even had KEI). I had to root and med just to be able to gate out...

Had him down to 21%.

I'll probably wait until 49th level and come back. With the higher pet, the better haste and a nice Berzerker Spirit on my pet, he should be a breeze...

Funny thing is, I don't even want the J Boots that much...

How Giyan got her boots
# Nov 26 2003 at 4:53 AM Rating: Excellent
Hi !
I want to tell you how I (lvl 53 cleric) got my Journeyman's boots:

1.) How I got the 'ring of the ancients':
- Used Kaladim PoK portal.
- Run to Buckerblock Mountain habour dock and asked "Translokator Fithop" (loc +1349/+3245) to teleport me to Ocean of Tear by saying "I want to travel to Ocean of Tears" to her.
- Swam to the next isle in the west (the one with the tower in which u can find spell vendor "Elesseryl". I went to loc +1220/-8000. If u look from this place to the south, u can see the only spawn spot in the isle, its loc is +1009/-8021. There, the ancient cyclops spawns.
- I killed its placeholders (aqua gobs, pirate, an ogre and a cyclops). The ancient cyclops spawned after about 3 hours. Killed em. Got the 'ring of the ancients'.

2.) How I got the shadowed rapier (warning: no-rent item):
- Used Freeport PoK portal
- walked N/W to cross through illusion wall.
- zoned to East Commonlands
- zoned to West COmmonlands
- Ran to S/W corner of zone, loc -739/+3730 (if u look S, u see the shadowed men)
- kill the Shadowed Men until u get shadowed rapier (Warning: Dont kill the ones with the book and the skeleton pet [necros], as they have negative beta neutal faction hit). I could single-pull em using cleric dd spell without pacify.
- go back to a bank and get 3250 GOLD pieces.

3.) How I found Hasten Bootstrutter
- I went to the Rathe Mountains (via Feerrot) and to loc -842/+482 facing north.
- I waited at this spot for Hasten for about 4 hours. Brother Zephyl and Maldyn the unkempt run by several times (his placeholders ?).
- I spoted him, waited until he was near and then pressen 'h' multiple time to get sure he heared me.
- I gave him the 'ring of the ancients', the 'shadowed rapier' and 3250 GOLD pieces at once (in one trade window). I got the boots from him.

I spent a good deal of time waiting for Hasten Bootstrutter to appear so I could turn in the quest items. I sat at n842 p482 (as was recommended) and watched the placeholders run by, such as Brother Zephyl. Knowing I could not defeat him, I just kept him targeted so that I would know when he despawned. He didn't take terribly long to despawn (I'm guessing between 20 minutes and an hour but this may be random). When he disappeared from my target, I'd face the north to watch for Hasten to come running toward me along Brother Zephyl's same pathing.

Eventually, Hasten came but I missed him with my "hail" spamming, and he ran right past me. However, I stayed in place and faced the south, and Hasten looped back around. This time my "hail" spamming got him to stop and allow me to turn in the items. I gave him the rapier, the ring, and 3250 gold all at the same time, and he gave me the boots.

Just wanted to acknowledge Sharkua Dirtybuzzard and Nyckole D'Ajea of Rodcet Nife for helping my chanter get her new pair of boots. They were kind enough to engage Mr. Bootstrutter in small talk while I was logging on (yes, I cheated :P ). They asked for nothing at all in return for their good deed, so to you two, thanks a million and I'm so glad there's still so many good people like you playing the game!
Are J-boots still highly desired & am I just lucky?
# Oct 31 2003 at 9:39 AM Rating: Decent
I have a question. Are J-boots still highly desired? I have been away from the game for 2 years. When I used to play I camped the AC for many many hours. I come back and have been playing for a couple months now. 2 nights in a row I was able to kill the AC and no one was camping him. I wasn't even looking for the AC I just happen to be in Southern Row the last 2 nights and I saw him running around. I managed to hook my other account and my friend up with the beginnings of J-boots. Am I just luck or is this spawn increased?

Tallon Zek here. I'm one of those lucky ******'s that just lucked into the AC in SRo one day. My apologies to all of you who actually worked to get him.

I came here to find info on Hasten and didn't find nearly as much as I'd found on the AC, so I'll offer up what I know about Hasten.

Entering Rathe, I turned left/south. At the first hill in the middle of the chasm there's a lizard man camp to the left. I went to the southern end of that hill. There I watched the narrow chasm to the south. I'd seen Hasten pause at this spot before when I wasn't on the quest. Eventually "a drake" showed up, which I read on this board is the placeholder for Hasten. Killed it. About 10 minutes later, another one showed up. Killed it. About 10 minutes later, etc. I did this about 7 or 8 times, then Hasten showed up. I hailed him repeatedly as I ran to him, but he just zoomed right past me. I ran to the Feerott entrance, but he wasn't there. I ran back to my original spot near the lizard man camp. Sure enough he zoomed up again, and I hailed him again, but he just kept zooming... then he suddenly stopped at that spot next to the southern end of the hill, on the lizard man camp side. I ran up and hailed him as I filled the Give window with the 3250 gold, the ring, and the rapier. Ta-da! Boots acquirred.

RE: MQ
# Oct 01 2003 at 6:14 PM Rating: Decent
basically the person with the ring would hand it in, then you hand in the no rent rapier and 3250 gold.

The MQ can also work if your char is on the same account as the ringbearer, just need someone to spam "hail" hasten after you turn in the ring and log your alt.

Hasten has at least one spot where he stops. if you are looking at the LoY map, it's on the right hand side not far from feerot zone near a lizard camp. (not where the hill giants are, but in the lower lvl area)
My experience.
# Sep 24 2003 at 10:01 AM Rating: Decent
About two days of off and on camping of the AC.

AC finally pops, heart skips a beat. After he pops, I head to Rathe to find a drake. Killed it, only to find...yep, the monk. Considering my options, I logged for the night.

Logged on just now, went to Nek to get a rapier, zoned to Rathe expecting a long camp only to see a IFP(Identified Flying Peck) racing past me.

Quick turn in later, and I'm a happy leezard.

Camped him for 10 hours sunday with no luck and we tried all differnt strategies from the net. Left that night wonderin if he really did spawn in the hot southern desert of Ro. Came back monday morning after class and decided to log on druid to peep the Ro and at first nothin...Moldrin is up w/ pet, terrorantula is up, few dry bones, some other undead and then I refreshed my tracking and BAM there he is....old ancient himself...I killed him with two casts of Ice (650 hp damage) each I believe and logged in my camped level 18 necro Xarmin to loot. Got the ring no prob and after a short wait for hasten got my boots.....so after 10 hours of trying theories from the net I got nowhere but after minutes of nothin I got everywhere.....kinda wierd but awesome. Good luck to everyone investing their time and sanity into this quest.

This quest must start somewhere else because when you hail Hasten he never says anything about journeyman boots. That means you have to know about the boots in order to ask about them. I have heard that the quest really starts by talking to someone in freeport, not sure which part, and he tells you to ask Hasten about journeyman boots. Any ideas?

It starts in Najena. Way back in the mists of time ('99 ish) the J-boots were tradeable and dropped from one of the named dark elves in there. This created some of the worst rows over loot and kill stealing complaints ever so VI created the J-boots quest. If you kill the person who used to have a rare drop of boots she now has an uncommon of a letter from Hasten taunting her about how he stole her boots while she was sleeping. Thus you can go and find Hasten and ask him what boots and carry on the quest
Worth it for a Ranger
# Aug 15 2003 at 4:02 PM Rating: Default
I have a question. Are the boots worth getting for a Ranger with SoW? In other words, for a Ranger is it worth all the camping that is required to get the ring? How much faster is it going to make me.

I do have the ring, rapier and cash to get them just wondering if it is better to MQ it to someone and pocket the cash.

As far as camping stories, I spent 16 straight hours in OOT camping AC. People were respectful of my camp although I was nervous. About crapped on myself when he finally did pop. tried to notice a pattern to this but there did not appear to be one. From my experience he is totally random as i killed all PH and tried a combination of not looting and looting PHs' (someone told me that would help). Was 8 pm RL when he popped, can't remember game time. Someone suggested a 1/255 chance of him popping and I would have to agree on that percentage. I must have killed about 255 of the PHs'. I camped SRo about 3 hours one night and tried killing all things on desert to get him to spawn and that did not seem to work. A word on shadowed men, to lvl 50 ranger they con green but they are under conned. I didn't draw agro from others but taking out two of them took me down to about 67% then when i pulled the third I guess they were a little pissed and started knocking the crap out of me. Had to root them and run to heal. Point is, don't take them to lightly which is easy to do after you have camped the AC for hours and think everything else is a walk in the park.

Don't bother. The effect isn't as fast as SOW. For example the rhinos in OT will catch you if you use jboots but you can easily outrun them with SOW. Stick with SOW. Sell the the MQ rights to someone else.

Shadowed men are totally ridiculous. They run faster than sow and can fear you. Two of them almost killed my 57 shaman when they surprised me. Barely made it to the zone.

I found out that the boots don't stack with sow and the boots are slower than sow. It is as fast as a lvl 14 casted sow. At least now I know.

Hey all!

Just got my Ring today, did it in 2 and a half hours. Here's the story. I was wandering around in South Ro alone when a pally and druid entered the zone and started killing stuff. I figured with them there I wouldn't be able to kill the AC,even if he did pop,so I joined up with them to help. After about an hour and a half, the AC popped and they pulled it. We smacked him and I waited for the pally to loot the ring. Suddenly, the druid told me to loot it. I did so,and I was a happy lil' pally :) Whoever said this quest can bring out the best in some people, you're completely correct =D Well,I'm off to gather the cash, get a rapier and then head off to catch Hasten =P

Good luck all =)
